Puron refrigerant also protectshomeowners against the future cost ofservice from the potentially increasedcost of servicing units using R-22 as itis phased out.

Compressor — The 38EYX features ascroll compressor. These compressorsare specially designed for Puronapplications, with it’s thicker shell andan anti-reverse rotation device in scrollcompressors for superior reliability andquiet operation. In addition, eachcompressor is mounted on rubberisolators for additional sound reduction. For improved serviceability, all modelsare equipped with a compressorterminal plug. Continuous operation isapproved down to 34°C in the heatingmode and down to 13°C in the coolingmode.

    Built-in-Reliability Components —Includes a suction-tube accumulator

that reduces the amount of liquidrefrigerant that reaches thecompressor; high pressure switch toprevent excessive pressure build-up;low-pressure switch to stop thecompressor if refrigerant charge islost; crankcase heater on 036-060 unitsto keep compressor oil warm and freeof refrigerant for maximum lubricity;internal compressor relief valve forhigh-pressure protection.

3-Phase Monitor Board — Controlboard that monitors the electrical

phase and prevents compressoroperation if wired incorrectly.

Discharge Silencer — Minimizes lowfrequency sound and pressurepulsation generated by compressordischarge gas.

    Defrost Control Board

—Incorporates a defrost relay, defrosttimer, and low-voltage terminations. The defrost control is a time andtemperature initiation/terminationcontrol which includes 4 field-selectable (DIP switch) time periods of30, 60, 90, and 120 minutes. Thecontrol includes built-in 5-minutecompressor delay for short cycleprotection. This control also includes afield-selectable (DIP switch) QuietShift mode, which if selected, maintainsquiet operation during defrost.

    Weather-Protective Cabinet — The

cabinet is constructed with galvanized, prepainted steel, providing each unitwith a finish that will last for manyyears.

All screws on cabinet exterior arecoated for a long-lasting rust-resistant,quality appearance.

    Unit Design

    — All units are equippedwith totally enclosed fan motors forgreater reliability under adverseweather conditions. The large, wraparound coil uses copper tube andepoxy coated, enhanced aluminum fin

and is designed for optimum heattransfer and corrosion protection. Thevertical air discharge carries the soundand air up and away from adjacentpatio areas and foliage. Coils can becleaned with a common garden hose.

    External Service Valves

Sensible heat capacity (kw)1. Gross capacities shown do not include a deduction for evaporator fan motor heat.2. Contact Carrier for cooling capacities at conditions other than shown in table.3. Direct interpolation is permissible. Do not extrapolate.

    4. SHC is based on 26.7˚C temperature of air entering the indoor unit. At any other temperature, correct the SHC read from the table of coolingcapacities as follows:

    Corrected SHC

    KW

    = SHC + [1.23 x 10

     –3

x (1-BF) x (Cdb-26.7) x L/s]Observe the rule of signs. Above 26.7˚C, SHC correction will be positive; add it to SHC. Below 26.7˚C, SHC correction will be negative; subtract it

    from SHC.5. Formula:

    Cldb = Cedb –

Leaving wet bulb = wet bulb temperature corresponding to enthalpy of air leaving coil (hlwb).

    hlwb = hewb –

Where hewb is enthalpy of air entering evaporator coil (kJ/kg).

    Carrier accessories

    * Factory authorized and listed, field installed.

Accessory Kits Description Suggested and Required Use

    1. Disconnect Kit

The kit is used to disconnect electrical power to the fan coil so service or maintenance may be performed safely.SUGGESTED USE: All (Consult local code).

    2. Downflow Base Kit

This kit is designed to provide a 1-in. minimum clearance between unit discharge plenum, ductwork, and combustible materials. It also provides a gap freeseal with the floor.

REQUIRED USE: This kit can be used whenever fan coils are used in downflow applications and local code requires a metal base for the unit.

    3. Downflow Conversion Kit

Fan coils are shipped from the factory for upflow or horizontal-left applications. Downflow conversion kits provide proper condensate water drainage andsupport for the coil when used in downflow applications. Separate kits are available for slope coils and A-coils.

REQUIRED USE: This kit must be used whenever fan coils are used in downflow applications.

    4. Fan Coil Filter

The kit consists of 12 fan coil f ramed filters. These filters collect large dust particles from the return air entering the fan coil and prevents them fromcollecting on the coil. This process helps to keep the coil clean, which increases heat transfer and in turn the efficiency of the system.

SUGGESTED USE: To replace filters in FX4C fan coils.

    5. Condensate Drain Trap Kit

This kit consists of 50 PVC condensate traps. Each trap is pre-formed and ready for field installation. This deep trap helps the system make and holdproper condensate flow even during blower initiation.

SUGGESTED USE: All FX4C fan coils.

    6. Downflow/Horizontal Conversion Gasket KitThis kit provides the proper gasketing of units when applied in either a Downflow or Horizontal application.

ESTIMATED SOUND POWER LEVEL FOR FX4C FAN COILS*

METHOD: Estimated Fan Sound Power (in decibels 10E-12 watts) is calculated in accordance with procedure described in ASHRAE 1987HVAC ‘‘Systems and Applications Handbook,’’  Chapter 52, ‘‘Sound and Vibration Control,’’ using the ‘‘Specific Sound PowerLevel’’ approach.

ACCURACY: This is a prediction method, based on an accepted method which has demonstrated satisfactory results in field applications. However, field test results may generate sound pressure values which differ from these predicted values, as the current stateof the art in determining sound power varies in accuracy from 0.2 db in mid-range (250 to 4000 Hz bands) to 3 to 4 db in 125and 8000 Hz bands and up to 6 to 8 db in 63 Hz band.

MINOR CHANGES: Use for estimating sound power at other conditions of airflow and external static pressure.
