Total Hours Worked (SP15):114 (this semester)

Detail of Duties: Now as more of a veteran intern at Whitman-Walker Health, I have more natural responsibilities. There is a schedule of work ingrained in my mind. For example, as we just entered April, I was responsible for entering this months calendar events to our website. Additionally, as these events approach, I will be drafting images and copy to promote them on social media. In other exciting news, our new building is having its soft opening in May. Its a state-of-the-art medical center with seven floors. I got to take a tour of the facility as Im doing a weekly blog post that gives our publics a sneak peek at the new building. Were working our way from the ground up to the seventh floor. So far, I unveiled our dental suite and pharmacy. Im looking forward to showing the view from our patio!Updating the calendar mostly consists of free HIV testing events, but allows me to further develop my skills in WordPress. This constant social media posting teaches me to be concise, but strong in my statements. Ive had a lot of creative opportunities to use Photoshop, Canva, and InDesign. A few of my website sliders are featured on the company site! Also, Ive had a lot of editing practice. I recently had to overview all of our soon-to-be published departmental brochures.

Professional Value:Professionally, Im growing in my ability to multitask, prioritize and sharpen my skills. Specifically, my editing eye is becoming keen, my creative touch is evolving in exploration and Im learning more resourceful workplace tools. Before interning, I was unfamiliar with Uber Conference, Constant Connections, and HighTail. Now, I encounter them weekly.

Personal Value:Personally, Im learning to enjoy my work. Normally when I feel stressed, I take up an arts and crafts project. I find that same comfort in making social media images. I think its important for people to find some satisfaction in the work they do. Whether its the impact or freedom. Interning at WWH has facilitated this realization.

Major Connection:As a larger community health organization, WWH is an influential entity in its region. We set the tone for information we put out from our organization. In that way, my interning experience relates to GateKeeping Theory. As an organization with a news analytic provider, we receive 20+ hits every day regarding HIV, LGBT, and WWH news. We filter out what we share and dont share with our audience. For example, we may post an article about the health benefits of marriage for LGBT individuals and not post one that mentions HIV as secondary information. Were gatekeeping.
