It is with deep regret that we report the death of well known transport and heritage identity Ken Butt on 28 January 2013 after a long illness. Kenneth Alfred Butt was well known and respected in transport industry and heritage circles over a long period. Ken was active in many heritage movements and was a Director of 3801 Limited.

At a memorial service at Macquarie Park on Monday 4 February a large number of family and friends remembered Ken. Long term friend and colleaugue Spencer Ross delivered the eulogy from which we share some extracts.

“My association with Ken commenced when I was introduced to him on my first visit to an Australian Railway Historical Society meeting in 1959.

Ken’s working life began as a lad selling newspapers in the City. He became an apprentice tiler, learning this trade from his father.

He became highly respected and well known professionally in the public transport sector for his long involvement with the Private Bus Industry. This all began as a young bus conductor at Punchbowl Bus Company. His career progressed to driver and other positions with Punchbowl before accepting an offer to manage Hunters Hill Bus Company which he subsequently purchased and later formed North and Western Bus Lines. North and Western was regularly called in to assist when calamities or breakdowns occurred on Sydney’s Suburban Rail system. His organisational skills were well known and his capacities to get things moving were exemplary.

Being a great family man, having his family involved in the business was always a joy and an asset he always greatly appreciated. He was respected by his staff and operated his services with a high degree of efficiency.

Ken was involved with Council traffic committees and Industry Associations holding Executive positions with the Bus and Coach Association of NSW and its local branches. One of his great achievements was the organising of the transport arrangements for the first official visit by the Pope to Australia at Randwick Racecourse in 1970. He enjoyed attending State, National and International conferences held by the Australian Road Transport Federation, the NSW Bus and Coach Association, Australian Bus and Coach Association and UITP, The International Transport Association.

Ken’s keen interests covered many groups involved in Heritage Transport. This included The Sydney Tramway Museum at Loftus where he was a driver and had held executive and operational positions.

Ken’s other involvements with transport and heritiage organisations included;

• Fellow of The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. • Chairman for the inaugural meeting of the formation of the NSW Rail Transport Museum.• Foundation member of the Lachlan Valley Railway Society• Formed the 12 wheelers club to continue rail tours by attaching passenger cars to interstate freight express trains. • Board member of 3801 Ltd with additional involvement on the risk and safety committee.• Valued member of The Rail Motor Society at Paterson.• Member of the Dorrigo Steam Railway and Museum.• Long term Member of Australian Model Railway Association with his love of O gauge model railways. And of course his own

great layout he was able to acquire and build when he moved to his home at Hunters Hill. • Member of the Historic Commercial Vehicle Association and the Sydney Bus and Truck Museum.

He was also a member of OBB (Old Bus Bastards), a group formed in honour of the late Geoff Johnson when he retired as Editor of Truck and Bus magazine, to meet quarterly and enable many former Bus Industry people to keep in contact with each other.

Ken has been a great benefactor to many of these organizations.

Ken supported and sponsored five Variety Club Bash events and drove on two occasions in his Holden entry.

He also supported the Royal Flying Doctor Service.”

The Board, Staff and the whole of the 3801 Limited Community extend to Ken’s wife Judith and Family sincere condolences.

BackgroundL516 was originally built in July 1937 as Sleeping Car TAM502, and was converted to a crew van in July 1978 for use on the Lithgow Break Down train and re-coded L516. During the conversion five sleeping compartments at the conductor’s compartment end were removed to create an open kitchen lounge area for crew use. The modifications were functional but of poor quality using plywood and laminates.

Following the closure of Lithgow Loco Depot the carriage was allocated to 3801 Limited for use as a crew van on the Bicentennial and Flying Scotsman Trains from 1988. L516 was later used as the 3801 Limited’s crew facility at Port Kembla Loco Depot supporting the Cockatoo Run during the period it operated out of Port Kembla. The carriage was by then in poor condition and when the Cockatoo Run commenced operating from Sydney L516 was placed into storage at Goulburn.

Restoration Of L516 – Ken Butt Club LoungeIn 2008 we commenced the restoration of L516 to operating condition as a flexible use lounge sitting car using available staff and volunteers. Currently the sleeping compartments are being refurbished to be used as either sitting or sleeping accommodation as required. The lounge/sitting area is to be rebuilt to a high standard similar to the interior of CPJ924 but with timber panelling to match the original TAM fit out. A small kitchenette will be incorporated to enable the preparation and serving of light refreshments. The carriage will also incorporate a sealed retention toilet system, an underfloor diesel generator system, PA system and a sound/video entertainment system.

The following work has now been completed in the Large Erecting Shop:-• Body completely re sheeted in marine plywood and sealed against water ingress.• Roof timber replaced and new roofing cover installed and painted. • Body paint in progress.• New windows being installed.• Bogies overhauled.• Drawgear and couplings repaired and replaced.• New NiCad batteries fitted.• Electrical upgrade in progress.• Kitchen lounge area stripped out ready for re building in panelled timber to match original TAM style.• Refurbishment of sleeping compartments has commenced.

In recognition of the tremendous support provided to 3801 Limited and the broader heritage community by the late Ken Butt, the 3801 Limited Board has resolved to accelerate the restoration of L516, and to dedicate the carriage to Ken by re coding it to KCB502 with the name KEN BUTT CLUB LOUNGE. A suitable acknowledgment panel will be installed in the car detailing Ken’s contribution to rail heritage.

We expect the cost to complete the restoration of the carriage to be in the region of $70,000 and are asking the heritage community for their financial support to help achieve this goal in honour of Ken Butt. To date we have raised $5,000 towards the completion of the restoration, and are seeking further corporate and private sponsorships and donations. We invite you to support this worthwhile project by becoming a Platinum ($5,000), Gold ($2,000), Silver ($1,000) or Bronze ($500) Sponsor. All sponsors will be acknowledged, and sponsorship payments can be made by instalments. We are also grateful for any donations, so please help us by giving us your most generous contribution of $50, $100, $250 or more today.

Visit from an Old FriendOctober 2012 saw the arrival of former 3801 Limited volunteer Hang Zhou for a three week visit from his home in China. During his recent four year residency in Australia Hang became a regular volunteer Passenger Attendant on the Cockatoo Run. Hang managed to fit in a lot during his brief stay here visiting friends and taking in the tourist things in Adelaide, Melbourne and Cairns as well as filling in on several occasions in his former role on the Cockatoo Run.

Operational heritage rail in NSW has been in continuous decline over the last 10 years and is now in a dangerously perilous state. Urgent action is required if we are to preserve our rich rail heritage for future generations to experience and enjoy.

You are invited to visit the online petition organised to bring to the attention of the Premier, Barry O’Farrell, and the NSW Minister for Transport, Gladys Berejiklian, the concerns of the rail heritage sector over the future of rail heritage and steam operations in this state.

3016 from GoulburnAn arrangement with Australian Railway Historical Society (ACT) has enabled 3801 Limited to operate vintage steam locomotive 3016 in the Sydney area during the summer season. On Sunday 25 November a tour was organised to facilitate the transfer of the locomotive to Sydney. The diesel-hauled train departed Central Station early in the morning arriving in Goulburn in time for lunch. Having travelled from Canberra to Goulburn the day before, 3016 then hauled the tour train back to Sydney to commence its season.

The old locomotive performed admirably on the run back to Sydney much to the delight of enthusiastic enthusiasts and is scheduled to operate a number of excursions with 3801 Limited before returning to Canberra in mid March. 3016 worked the steam train to the Special Childrens Christmas Party at Rosehill on Wednesday 1 December 2012. Details of the upcoming Steam to the Suburbs tours appear on page 4 of this Newsletter. Another tour has been arranged to Goulburn to return 3016 to its home in Canberra on Saturday 16 March. See the website for details.

The Kandos MountaineerSaturday 20 October 2012 saw veteran Alco Diesel Electric locomotive 4501 lead a return tour to the popular destination of Kandos. Following the closure of the Kandos Cement works, the line from Charbon Loop to Kandos was closed for traffic. However in conjunction with ARHS (ACT) and the Rail Motor Society we were given the opportunity by John Holland to open the line from Charbon to Kandos to run another train to Kandos Station.

The occasion also celebrated 50 years of service of 4501 reached on 2 June 2012. 4501 attached to 4833 and another 44 Class hauled the special heritage train for the nostalgic trip to Kandos on the truncated Mudgee line. Highlights of the day were the magnificent scenery of the Blue Mountains and the Capertee Valley with a photo stop at the popular Brogans Creek.

Sydney Special Children’s Christmas Party – Wednesday 12 December 2012Each year since the mid-nineties a group of major sponsors have provided this special event for children with special needs – those challenged by a physical or intellectual disability, a serious illness or an extreme circumstance. For several years 3801 Limited has been a participant in this special event by providing a steam train to convey children from Central Station to the venue at Rosehill Gardens.

This year, with the cooperation of ARHS (ACT), steam locomotive 3016 hauled the special train of ten cars with over 450 special children and carers aboard to Rosehill Station adjacent to the venue. Here a huge number of amusements awaited the special guests including rides and jumping castles, hands-on displays by Police, Fire and Ambulance services, concerts, face painting and farm animals to touch.

3801 Staff and Volunteer Christmas Party – Sunday 16 December 2012Approximately ninety 3801 Limited staff and volunteers and their partners or guests joined the last Cockatoo Run of 2012 as passengers and travelled to Robertson for an end of year Christmas lunch. They joined with volunteers of the Robertson Heritage Railway Station who prepared and catered a sumptuous lunch which was held in St John’s Robertson Anglican Church Hall. Many thanks go to the Robertson volunteers for their superb organising of the event.

Special guest at the function was Robyn Phillpot, wife of the late Allan Phillpot whom regular travellers with 3801 Limited over the years will recall was a Volunteer Train Manager on many of our trips. Robyn was invited to join us at the luncheon by the Board of 3801 Limited who thought it fitting at this time, close to the second anniversary of Allan’s passing, to unveil a display case of souvenir tie bars, badges and mementos which Allan had collected over the years as part of his favourite hobby of trains.

Chairman and General Manager John Glastonbury reminded those present of Allan’s contribution to 3801 Limited and then introduced Robyn and invited her to unveil the display case. Robyn in reply said that 3801 Limited had always played a big part in her and Allan’s lives and that she would always maintain an interest in 3801 Limited and its operations. The display case will now be mounted in one of our carriages for all to admire, and as a fitting tribute to Allan.
