Unity of Time.

According to this unity, a play should complete within a day. But, Shakespeare breaks the law.• In Othello, we see the

setting and raising of the sun for many a times. It means, that the play was not completed within a day.

• The beginning scene of the play is at night and the ending scene of the play is also the night.

Unity of Place

• According to this unity, the play should take place at a single place. The setting of the place can not be changed.

• In Hamlet, we see him ones at Denmark then we also see him travelling to England...

Unity of Action• According to this

unity, the play should have one main action and it should not have any sub plots.

• In Othello, we see the sub plot of Casio and Bianca, Iago and Emilia and many more sub plots are added.

Mingling of Mirth in serious play of Tragedy

• According to Greek Tragedy, there can not be a mingling of comedy in a serious play. Otherwise, it won’t be a pure tragedy.

• We see comic scenes as a comic relief in most of the Shakespeare’s Tragedy. In Hamlet, we see Hamlet having a comic discussion with Polonius regarding his daughter.

Ben Jonson• Most learned and judicious writer.• Severe Judge of himself and others.• Frugal of Wit.• Seldom find him making love in any

of the scenes.• Humour was his proper sphere.• Robbed very openly by invading

authors like Monarch.• He weav’d the language too closely

and laboriously.• He did not take pains to Romanize

the tongue.• Submitted all his writings to the

Censure ( Fletcher) to see if any of the unities are cannons of Ancients were violated by him.
