Place at curb prior to 6 a.m. on your regular collection day or no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before. Do not use cardboard boxes to contain refuse. HOMEOWNER DISPOSAL AREA The Sanitation Department's Homeowner Disposal Area, located at 1600 Merrick Road, Merrick, is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., except on Town of Hempstead observed holidays. All residents will be asked to provide proof of residency, such as a driver's license or a tax bill. The Homeowner Disposal Area is available to residents of unincorporated areas (except resi- dents of Sanitation District 1) of the town. It is not available to residents of incorporated villages (except Hempstead and Freeport Villages). Materials must be brought in non-commercial vehicles. All vehicles towing trailers of any size will be required to pay commercial disposal rates. Pickup trucks must adhere to the follow- ing: must have a cap or be stacked no higher than the height and depth of the truck bed, and cannot have a tool box mounted to the truck bed. Vans must adhere to the following: must have a backseat installed, side door with windows, no top racks, no interior doors separating driver area from cargo area, no shelving, mounted corkboards, etc. Waste acceptable for disposal includes ap- pliances, batteries, metal, tires, furniture, dried-out latex paint (see S.T.O.P. Program for oil-based paints), recyclables and nonburnable items. Stone material: cement, concrete, bricks (no dirt will be accepted) and other masonry material are limited to two (2) 32-gallon buckets per trip. Compost: leaves, trees, grass, shrubs, etc. are limited to three (3) bags or two (2) 32-gallon buckets per trip. No medical waste or hazardous waste allowed. For all questions and concerns regarding our Homeowner Disposal Area, please call (516) 378-4210, ext. 6307 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Dear Neighbor, Hempstead Town is partnering with neighbors to deal with the disposal of household waste, electronic devices and hazardous materials in an environmentally responsible manner. In fact, we are pursuing environ- mentally progressive initiatives in our sanitation department at the same time as our government has slashed its 2017 budget by over $13 million compared with the 2016 financial document. Some of the convenient and planet friendly sanitation department offerings for this year include monthly paper shredding events (commencing in March) and the acceptance of e-waste at our Merrick sanitation facility for those who are unable to attend an e-cycle event. What’s more, our town’s S.T.O.P. Program is keeping hazardous materials such as paint, oil and paint thinner out of the waste stream. Further, a new New York State law provision requires drivers to “move over” if possible for an approaching garbage truck on its daily pickup rounds. Together, we can keep our sanitation workers safer. Sincerely, Anthony J.
