Department of Family and

Community Medicine

Dear Colleagues,I am excited about our course this year.

As a course director I am always concerned whether attendees are “getting their money’s

worth.” Are we providing practice changing information? Past research has shown that

passive CME courses do not result in change in practice behavior. For that reason we have

taken steps over the past several years to make our course more interactive: pre- and post-

tests, 10 minutes for questions at the end of each presentation and the use of an audience

response system.

Last year we surveyed our attendees three months after the meeting and found that, in-

deed, they are changing their practice behavior as a result of attending our meeting. A sam-

pling of the responses included the following changes: -Pap smears every 3 years instead of

yearly -No paps for women 65yo and older -Ask patients to schedule colonoscopy at age 50

-Vaccinate diabetics for Hepatitis B -Relax A1c control on elderly patients -Talk to patients

on Actos about risk and benefits -Immunize Hepatitis C patients for Hepatitis A and B -Of-

fer biopsy to Hepatitis C patients -Raise my index of suspicion for MRSA with any alleged

“bug bite” -Strongly encourage bladder training in all my enuretic patients -Get an RPR

more often for nonspecific rash, especially of palms/soles -Better documentation of pain

scale on anyone on chronic pain meds -Follow sodium levels in any of my elderly patients

on SSRI’s -Encourage CoQ10 and garlic supplementation for my problem hypertensives.

We have no pharmaceutical or other outside support for this course. All expenses are

paid from registration fees. For questions or updated program information, please call or

visit our website: http://cme.uthscsa.edu/familypractice2013.asp. Come join us and see

what changes occur in your practice!

I hope to see you in March!
