Welcome The Corrective Services Academy is pleased to present this guide to its program of courses for 2003. We always aim to provide high quality training, development and support services to enhance the skills, leadership, effectiveness, potential and well­being of staff. This guide reflects this aim.

I would also like to encourage you to bookmark our website at www.csa.nsw.gov.au for the latest information and updates on our courses. We also regularly publish articles and items of interest on the site and will soon introduce a feedback mechanism and bulletin board for all courses.

Corroctlve Services Academy (CSA) The New South Wales (NSW) Corrective Services Academy is the leading provider of vocational education and training in the Australasian Corrective Services Industry. As a Registered Training Organisation and certified to ISO 9001 :2000 standards, the Academy plays a key role in the Department's vision to provide a correctional system which is recognised internationally for excellence.

Course application and enrolment procedure A courses calendar covering the first half of 2003 has been included at the back of this guide. The calendar is also available at the Academy site on the intranet and is updated twice each year.

You will also find a course enrolment form in the guide. If you wish to enrol in a course you will need to fill out the course enrolment form and have it signed by your supervisor and/or any other approved person, depending on course enrolment procedures followed in your workplace.

Send the completed form to your regional training and development co-ordinator. The form will be processed locally and then sent to the Academy where your details are entered on our database and the relevant course co-ordinator prepares a list of participants. If you don't have a regional training co-ordinator or you are an external applicant, contact the relevant training unit directly. You will then receive a letter of confirmation prior to the commencement of the course. If you have not received notification about the course within one week of the commencement date you should contact the relevant training unit.

Aboriginal Cultural Awarone!>s Research has consistently shown that indigenous Australians are the most incarcerated people in the world. The Royal Commission into Aboriginal deaths in custody highlighted the need for changes to the Australian criminal justice system to address this situation. This program will provide you with many important personal insights. You will receive a contemporary understanding of the cultural, health, welfare and communication issues faced by indigenous people. The program leads to the attainment of the unit of competency: CSCOFM014A- Provide support to offenders in Aboriginai!Torres Strait communities. Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Workplace Development

Action Management Program Whether you are new to management or have been leading a team for years, this is your opportunity to sharpen your management skills. The program is open to all middle managers including Senior Assistant Superintendents, Assistant Superintendents, Unit Leaders, District Managers (DM 3/4), and non-custodial middle managers (Clerk grade 7/8). We'll focus on the consolidation of vocational skills and extension of management qualities. A wide range of activities will be undertaken including two/three-day workshops, self-directed learning, work shadowing, participation in identified short courses and distance-learning modules aligned to Diploma level units of the Correctional Services Training Package. Course duration: 2 x 3 days- NB: completion of the Diploma is optional and may take up to 2 years Training unit: Professional Development

Alcohol and Other Drugs The cost to the community of alcohol and other drug abuse is very high and a strong link can be made to offending behaviour. If you work with offenders who have drug, alcohol or gambling issues you need specialist skills and the knowledge to understand and effectively manage them. Important topics covered in the program include: background to alcohol and other drugs, effects and impacts of drugs, the harm minimisation model and on Alcohol and Other Drugs Programs within the Department

After the training and upon successful completion of a workplace assessment, you will achieve three units of competency from the Community Services Training Package. These are CHCAOD2A: Orientation to the alcohol and other drugs sector, CHCAOD8A: Work with clients who have alcohol and other drug issues, CHCAOD5A: Provide Services to clients with alcohol and other drugs issues. Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Offender Programs

Assessor Development Workshop The Department's network of workplace assessors is one of our key staff development tools. If you are already an assessor this workshop is designed to support your professional development by updating your knowledge of assessment policies and practices, and by enhancing the skills and attitudes required to participate in a quality assessment process. We also provide assessors with an opportunity to build networks with other Departmental assessors, problem-solve and gain awareness of relevant resources. Course duration: 1 day Training unit: Workplace Development

Case Management If you have never received formalised case management training for your work within a correctional centre, or you want to maintain your knowledge of the latest practices, you will gain a valuable insight into the inter-related areas of corrections management in this program. It provides the skills and knowledge necessary to apply the

principles of case management Topics covered include the completion of relevant case plans, management plans and reports, reception and induction issues, the classification process, role and responsibilities of the Case Management Team and offender programs.

Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Custodial Training

Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training This course is only open to those employees whose main work role involves training. The focus of this qualification is to provide a pathway for further development in training for those individuals who have been functioning as workplace assessors and workplace trainers.

The course covers BSZ405A - Plan and Promote a Training Program; BSZ406A- Plan a series of training sessions; BSZ407 A- Deliver training sessions and BSZ408A - Review training. Together with the course pre­requisites successful completion will lead to BSZ40198 Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training.

It is a course pre-requisite that participants have evidence of achievement in the competency units: BSZ401 A­Plan assessment; BSZ402A- Conduct assessment; BSZ403A - Review assessment; and BSZ404A - Train small groups.

The course adopts a self-paced format with attendance at a one day orientation program required. In certain cases, one-to-one consultations and/or a recognition pathway may be available. Participants have two calendar months to complete all course requirements. Course duration: 1 day and on-going consultation Training unit: Workplace Development

Certificate Ill in Correctional Practice (10.5 weeks) This course is designed for entry-level custodial staff to apply the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively manage offenders. It includes such topics as legislation, emergency procedures, OH & S, Crimes Act law, security procedures, case management, classification and supervising and communicating with offenders. To complete this qualification trainees must complete a further 9.5 months of on-the-job assessment tasks in a correctional environment

Note: The first three weeks of this program includes the Integrated Induction Course where entry level staff from different disciplines such as Inmate Services and Programs, Probation and Parole, Corrective Services Industries and Administration receive common training in areas such as roles and responsibilities, deparlmental structure, legislation, ethical and security dilemmas.

Course duration: 10.5 weeks Training unit: Custodial Training

Certificate IV in Correctional Practice [8 weeks] The Certificate IV in Correctional Practice is the entry level qualification for Probation and Parole Officers. It commences with an 8 week initial training program at the Academy, followed by 10 months of on the job training and some additional training courses in specialist areas. The aim of the course is to equip newly recruited Probation and Parole Officers with the skills and knowledge to be effective in their new role. The course covers interview skills, report writing, case management, legislation and particular skills to deal with different offender groups.

Certificate IV in Correctil:mal Practice (Recognition based) This course is designed for custodial staff who have worked at senior correctional officer level or equivalent for a minimum of twelve months in the last four years. It is recognised that correctional officers at this level have experience, knowledge and skills from several years on the job and will be able to achieve most or all of the units of competency for this qualification. Recognition is the acknowledgement of the competencies and prior learning that they possess. Course participants need to collect evidence and submit a portfolio to an accredited assessor nominated by the Academy.

Computer Software Training

The Workplace Development Unit offers training in Microsoft Office applications at an introductory and intermediate level. These include Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. We also offer a course to introduce learners to personal computers and Windows. Most of our software application courses are delivered over 2 days.

For internal customers, the following courses are available (only) through distance education and workplace assessment: PC Awareness I Windows, Word Introduction, Excel Introduction.

Convenor's Workshop Convening a selection panel is a challenging process. This program will assist you to develop best practice as a convenor for selection committees. It will raise your awareness and develop the necessary knowledge and skills required to manage the process. It deals with those roles and responsibilities of the convenor which are not covered in the Recruitment and Selection Procedures Course. Ideally you should have completed the Department's current Recruitment and Selection Procedures course prior to enrolling. However, provisions are made for those who have not yet completed that course or are exempt due to undertaking such training within the last 3 years. Course duration: 1 day Training unit: Workplace Development

Corporate Systems Training The Workplace Development Unit has responsibility for the training in our corporate record & offender management systems. (Training in other systems/modules such as MIMS, OIMS & Online Case Management is currently being piloted and will be adverlised when generally available}.

OMS (Offender Management System) Modules currently offered include: lntro, Visits, Property, Admissions & Releases.

PIMS for Case Managers is also being offered to cater for the needs of incoming case managers with limited experience of Probation and Parole's offender management system. This 2 day course covers PIMS modules: case management, Integrated Word Processing and the LSI-R. This course is also available as a refresher for Probation and Parole staff. Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Workplace Development

Cultural Inclusiveness Naturally, the correctional environment tends to be as multi-cultural as Australian society itself. This course explores cultural issues from a perspective that recognises diversity and promotes inclusiveness. You will learn

how to devise and adopt strategies for your workplace which foster good working relationships, positive communication and informed case management.

The course covers CSCOFM011A: Promote cooperative behaviour, which is a unit of competency for Certificates Ill & IV in Correctional Practice. You will be able to attain this competency by submitting the workplace assignments. Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Workplace Development

Diploma of Correctional Administration and Advanced Diploma of Correctional Management If you want to explore what it means to be a manager in a corrective services context these programs are an essential starting point. You will be asked to research and critically examine issues relating to the correctional environment. The programs are offered in a variety of learning formats and the qualification is particularly relevant for Commissioned Officers, Deputy Governors and all other staff grade 7 and above. Course duratiott Variable up to 2 years Training unit: Professional Development

Disability Awareness One of the greatest continuing challenges facing the Department is dealing effectively with offenders who have a disability. Raising your general awareness of the broad area of disabilities and its particular relevance in the correctional environment is a vital step in this process. The program will encourage you to explore your current attitudes and perceptions and to reflect on how this may impact on your ability to respond appropriately to inmates with disabilities. The program is open to all staff. Course duration: 1 day Training unit: Workplace Development

Emergency Life Support (Level 1 first Aid) Basic life saving knowledge including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Expired Air Resuscitation (EAR) and wound management are core skills most staff should possess. Emergency Life Support (ELS) is aimed primarily at base grade officers. The program is conducted over a 6.5 hour period and upon completion you will become certified for three years.

E:~~:ecutive Leadership Program Good managers can turn straw into gold. Bad managers can do the reverse. This program will encourage you to reflect on what it means to be a leader in this organisation if you are a Governor, District Manager (OM 1/2) or AJC Grade 11/12. It will extend your understanding of applied management strategies within the correctional context. There are several components to the program including two residential sessions of five and three days duration, culminating in the presentation of a major project to the Board of Management. Sucoessful completion of all elements of the program will result in formal qualifications from the nationally recognised industry training package. Inclusion in the program is by invitation.

fmntline Management Initiative The Frontline Management Initiative (FMI) is a new way of developing management and leadership skills through the assessment of actual skills in the workplace. It is designed to recognise and improve on your existing skills as a supervisor, team leader or line manager. FMI is not intended as a training activity, but rather a learning opportunity for you to develop and manage your own performance and that of others.

You will initially attend a one-day introductory workshop where you are provided with information and resources to assist the completion of the eight units of competency required for attainment of Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management). You must be disciplined in your approach to learning, and complete each unit within a maximum of six weeks (48 weeks total). The program is conducted through distance education and relies upon the learning pathways of recognition and completion of workplace activities and projects.

Course duration: 1 day then variable for each of the 8 units Training unit: Professional Development

Group Work facilitation Running groups is at the cutting edge of current offender management practices and increasingly, group work is being used to support traditional one-on-one case management. If you are required to conduct group work with offenders as part of your role, this program will assist you to discover the best ways to organise this process. You will learn about group dynamics, group work techniques, and how to plan and assess training sessions. Upon successful completion of all assessment tasks you will be awarded a statement of attainment in the unit of competency Plan and conduct group activities, which forms part of Certificate IV in Community Services (Community Work).

Course duration: 4 days Training unit: Offender Programs

Job Application and Interview Skills Applying for a new role can be a complex undertaking and in order to maximise your chances of success you owe it to yourself to be prepared. This course develops a range of skills associated with applying for positions within the NSW Public Service. We will examine your key personal strengths and weaknesses, assess the components of a job application and covering letter, teach you to understand and address selection criteria and expose you to the dynamics of the interview process.

Priority will be given to officers who have recently been displaced or whose position is being re-graded. The program is also open to clerks up to grade 6 or equivalent and all non-commissioned correctional officers.

Course duration: 1 day workshop Training unit: Workplace Development

Managing female Offenders Female offenders are a unique group within the correctional system characterised as 'high need-low risk'. This course is case management focused and will provide you with the skills and knowledge required to manage female offenders and gain an understanding of the specific issues pertaining to this group. Topics include socialisation, understanding the effects of abuse and domestic violence, drug and alcohol issues, cross gender supervision, mothers and children and other female specific programs. Throughout the course, you will engage in group activities that interactively manage case studies of four different female offenders.

Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Custodial Training

Managing Inmates with Mental Health Issues Managing offenders with mental health problems has been cited as one of the greatest challenges facing the modern correctional practitioner. If you work with offenders in this category you will learn how to recognise the

symptoms of various types of mental illness, and receive practical advice and strategies for managing this group of offenders within the correctional setting. Successful completion of the assessment tasks for this course satisfy the unit of competency entitled Protect the safety and welfare of vulnerable offenders, from the Certificate IV in Correctional Practice.

Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Offender Programs

fJianaging Sex Offenders If you are responsible for managing offenders who have committed sexual offences against children or adults, this course will provide you with some valuable insights into their thinking and behaviour. The program is designed to help you gain an understanding of the issues involved in sexual offending and to assist you to make informed decisions in relation to sex offenders.

Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Offender Programs

Managing Young Adult Offenders Inmates who we define as young adult offenders represent approximately 30% of the correctional centre population. They have the highest incidence of self-harm, are more likely tore-offend and are responsible for 43% of all offences committed in custody. If you work with young adult offenders you need knowledge of the typical profile and special needs of this high-risk group. This program will provide you with the wide range of skills and attitudes that you need to confidently manage and support positive behavioural change.

After successfully completing the classroom component and workplace activities, you will receive a statement of attainment for 3 units of competency from the Certificate IV in Correctional Practice: CSCOFM013A - Implement planned approach to offender management, CSCOFM011 A- Promote cooperative behaviour and CSCOFM006A­Protect the safety and welfare of young adult offenders. Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Offender Programs

OHS Risk Management for Supervisors and Managers Although accidents will inevitably occur in the workplace we have a duty to try to eliminate all conditions which could result in injury or health problems for our employees. If you have supervisory or management responsibilities, this Workcover accredited program is designed to familiarise you with the principles of risk management as an integral part of an effective OHS management system. The program is available at the Corrective Services Academy or on-site.

Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Employee Health & Safety

OHS Consultation About 2,700 Australians die and 65,000 are injured in workplace accidents each year. If you want to play a part in an effective occupational health and safety (OHS) management system in your workplace this program is an essential first step. It is designed for OHS committee members and OHS representatives and will enable you to apply the principles of workplace OHS consultation, which is an integral part of an effective OHS management system. This program is available at the Corrective Services Academy or on-site.

OHS Site Inspection If you have responsibility for the implementation of Community Service Orders (CSO's), Occupational Health and Safety Site Inspection has been developed to meet your specific needs. The program provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the principles of risk management in community service work. It can be undertaken at the Corrective Services Academy or on-site.

Course duration: 1 day Training unit: Employee Health & Safety

Parole Training Are you a Probation and Parole officer currently working in the community who is moving to a correctional centre environment? Understanding the special dynamics of this workplace will help you to adapt to your new role. Parole training is designed for you. It will familiarise you with the preparation of pre-release reports, the classification system, case management and other administrative systems relevant to working in parole units.

Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Offender Programs

Recruitment airid Selecth:m Procedures A recruitment process which has integrity and is ethically sound is essential for the continuing renewal and development of the Department's human resources. This program will enable you to participate effectively as a member of a selection committee and apply merit-based principles. We will focus on providing the necessary knowledge and skills in applying the Department's recruitment and selection policy and procedures when participating as a member of a selection committee in accordance with public sector guidelines.

You will have the option of completing additional post course assessments which lead to the attainment of the unit of competency BSBHR402A - Recruit and select personnel, which is part of BSB40801 Certificate IV in Business (Human Resources) Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Workplace Development

Safe Custody If you work in a court this program will equip you with the knowledge and skills to effectively manage offenders in this environment. Topics covered include, responding to emergencies and critical incidents, security issues, roles and responsibilities of custody managers, drug & alcohol issues, and the management of offenders who are suicidal or at risk.

Course duration: 5 days Training unit: Custodial Training

S~mior First Aid This program builds on basic first aid principles primarily for those who are senior correctional officers and above. It is VETAB and NSW Workcover accredited and compares favourably with first aid courses that are available to the general public through St Johns, Red Cross and other providers. Upon successful completion, you will be certified for three years.

Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Employee Health & Safety

Strategies for Stress Management Strategies for reducing stress can help to improve your work life and your overall wellbeing. Managing stress and understanding the symptoms and causes of stress in yourself and others is an important tool for everyone. This program will help you understand stress and the symptoms of stress, personal stressors, ineffective coping mechanisms, the link between self-esteem and stress, and strategies and techniques for managing stress. Following the program you will be able to implement stress-reducing strategies and techniques in your daily life. The program is available at the Corrective Services Academy or on-site.

Course duration: 1 day Training unit: Employee Health & Safety

Strategies for Dealing with Conflict A certain level of conflict in the workplace promotes change and can be quite healthy. The key to turning conflict into a positive experience is to gain an understanding of the nature of conflict. We do this through communication and listening skills, managing emotions and by examining ineffective methods of dealing with conflict. We also address issues and situations particular to the workplace which result in conflict and explore methods to prevent or reduce it. If you elect to complete the assessment tasks you will receive a statement of attainment. This program is available at the Corrective Services Academy or on-site.

Course duration: 2 days Training unit: Employee Health & Safety

Suicide Awareness and Immediate lnte1r11ention In order to accurately assess an offender's risk of self-harm/suicide you have to know how and when to intervene. During this course you'll gain the confidence to implement and follow Departmental procedures to attempt to prevent such actions, protecting both the offender themselves and others. Course duration: 1 day Training unit: Offender Programs

Train Small Groups This is the first step in gaining the necessary accreditation to deliver workplace training. You will develop the essential practical skills required to prepare, deliver and review competency based workplace training. This program meets the requirements for the national unit of competency BSZ404A-Train small groups, which is part of the Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training. NB: You must fulfil a specific training function within the workplace to be eligible. Courses in 2003 will be organised on a needs basis. Course duration: 3 days Training unit: Workplace Development

Wilderness/Remote Area first Aid Wilderness/Remote Area First Aid is conducted over five days. Two days are conducted in the classroom and three days in the wilderness. You are required to be physically fit as the program is arduous. It is a pre-requisite that you have a current Senior First Aid Certificate prior to undertaking the program. Upon successful completion of the program you will become Workcover accredited and be certified for three years.

Winning Teams Teams are not automatic productivity enhancers but they can be an effective way of unlocking and unifying the combined talents of a work group. Through a range of experiential learning activities, you will discover how to
