A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. ROBERT

3AUGUST 4, 2019 | EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PUT THOSE PHONES IN THE BASKET!This past week, I was in Atlanta for the National African Conference of Catholic Clergy and Religious in the United States (ACCCRUS). A few incidences there with phones ringing during the convention, and they reminded me of an experience I had at a board meeting which I attend once a year while in Africa. One day, that particular meeting almost turned sour when phones of some of the members kept either ringing or beeping and were being given more attention than the agenda on the meeting. Those members kept smiling and laughing, but not at anything anyone in the meeting had just said, rather, at what someone had texted from miles away. Some even received the calls and proceeded to respond to them.So agitated and annoyed by how these phones were ruining an important meeting, which I usually attend only once a year, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I improvised a basket, and passed it around instructing all of us to switch off our phones and drop them into the basket and hand them to the executive director for safe keeping. You should have seen the long looks those members gave that basket, and how shocked others were at the idea of parting with their darling phones even for the few hours we were scheduled for the meeting. “How dare you,” some looks seemed to say, but they complied anyway and that action saved the meeting whose agenda for discussion was so critical. So, put those phones in the basket! Now, picture a marriage for a moment, where instead of talking to each other a couple is constantly on Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, Pinterest, Twitter and so forth! What kind of marriage will that be? A friend told me in frustration of his wife, who tiptoes out of bed at 3am into the bathroom for a few minutes to check WhatsApp statuses, or post a comment on Facebook! What are these phones doing to our relationships? Damage! So, put those phones in the basket!Sadly, blissful marriages are now on social media depriving couples of intimate moments together and meaningful communications with each other. So, wouldn’t it be perfectly okay to have regulations

put in place as a couple when it comes to how phones, tablets, Kindles and other gadgets are used when you are together? Yes, I bet it would. So, I recommend that you have a phone basket at the bedroom door. Once you walk into that sanctuary, leave your online buddies and friends in that basket at the door and return to them in the morning. This will give you that special time for each other and for important conversations and other critical marital responsibilities. So, put those phones in the basket! Some couples who have an empty nest, with their children away in boarding schools or who have moved out on their own, do not know what to do with each other. So, they turn to their phones and headsets, or flirt with strangers miles away instead of creatively ‘taking a tour’ of the house. This damages relationships. So, put those phones in the basket! The worse damage that these phones are doing to us is in Churches during Mass. In spite of announcing before every Mass to “Please silence all cell phones, and let us quiet our hearts as we prepare to enter into this Most Sacred Liturgy,” we still experience disruptions during Mass here in our Church. In some rare cases, we have had people who even received calls and proceeded to hold conversations! This is not only rude and disrespectful to God but also to our neighbors who want to take that special moment in Church to pray.Yes, prayer is our communication with God because, like I shared in my homily last weekend, prayer is essentially a conversation between ourselves and God. And if this is true, it is imperative that we must be extremely respectful when we pray or when we are in Church. We must do everything possible to create that reverent moment by not only avoiding loud conversations in Church but also most importantly by creating an atmosphere which allows us to listen as God speaks to us in the silence of our hearts. Noisy conversations and disruptive phone calls are great obstacles to this. So, put those phones in the basket!

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

-Fr. Robert

ADORATION”The Hour of Adoration prepares one for Holy Mass and Holy Communion. Frequent encounters and familiar conversation with Jesus produce friendship, resemblance, and identity of thought, of feeling and of willing with Jesus.””-Blessed James Alberione (1884 to 1971)Founder of the Society Of St. Paul and the Daughters ofSt. Paul

WEEKLY REFLECTION ON THE READINGSAUGUST 4, 2019 | EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMECALL TO PRAYER: We begin in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.FIRST READING: Ecc 1:2; 2:21-23RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17SECOND READING: Col 3:1-5, 9-11GOSPEL: Lk 12:13-21 | Someone in the crowd said to Jesus,“Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him,“Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd,“Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.”

Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do,for I do not have space to store my harvest?’And he said, ‘This is what I shall do:I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goodsand I shall say to myself, “Now as for you,you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’But God said to him,‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you;and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselvesbut are not rich in what matters to God.”

REFLECTION:Adults/Teens: In today’s Gospel, Jesus steps back from role of “judge and arbitration.” How would you describe the way he exercises his moral authority in this story and in your own life? What is your top priority in terms of life goals right now? Are these goals based on spiritual needs or more material needs? Who are the most important people in your life? How do they fit into your life goals?

Children: In today’s Gospel, someone says to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to give me my share.” Have you ever felt cheated of your share? Are there times when someone less deserving gets an award or the best grade? How do you feel about this?

Take a moment to reflect on Jesus and His presence in your life.Pray together, aloud, the Our Father.

RESPECT LIFEBLESSING OF A CHILD IN THE WOMBThe “Rite for the Blessing of a Child in the Womb” was crafted to support parents awaiting the birth of their child, toencourage parish prayers for -- and recognition of -- theprecious gift of the child in the womb, and to foster respect for human life within society. It may be offered within the context of the Mass as well as outside of Mass. Please also see the reflection written by Norma Montenegro Flynn on page 5 of the May 12, 2019 bulletin.

God, author of all life, bless, we pray, this unborn child;give constant protectionand grant a healthy birththat is the sign of our rebirth one dayinto the eternal rejoicing of heaven...-excerpt from the Prayer of Blessing

WORD OF LIFE REFLECTIONS“Precisely in an age when the inviolable rights of the person are solemnly proclaimed and the value of life is publicly affirmed, the very right to life is being denied or trampled upon, especially at the more significant moments of existence: the moment of birth and the moment of death.”

PRAYER FOR AN END TO INFANTICIDE“Jesus, Lord of Life, transform the hearts of our electedleaders to recognize that infanticide is wrong and must not be tolerated. We especially pray for our Senator(s) __________ (and __________). Open his/her/their heart(s) and mind(s) torecognize and defend the precious gift of every human life.”
