In part 2 of the IELTS speaking module you need to give a short talk of between one and halfand two minutes. There are two major problems here: speaking for long enough and stayingoherent. In this video post I am going to look briefly at one way to organise your talk andimprove you flueny and oherene band sore.

The problem a presentation with no preparation

I find it helps to think of part 2 as a short presentation ! the hallenges are the very similar."ne of hallenges of presentations is to organise your ontent so that people an understandyour message and one of the basi rules of a making a good presentation is to prepare it

properly. In IELTS# however# you only have $ minute to prepare and most of that time willbe spent thinking of voabulary to use. So how an you organise your talk with little%nopreparation time&

A solution use the cue card

"ne solution is to use the ue ard as the struture of your talk. The way to do this is 'uitesimple ! all the ue ards are organised in the same way with one major topi and ( sub)topis. Look at this sample ue ard:

Describe a wedding you have been to or heard about.;ou should say8

who got marriedwhat they worewhat they did on the day

and eplain how you felt about this wedding.

There are ( topis to talk about:

    $. the people

    2. the lothes

  • 8/13/2019 33820700-CUE-CARD

    6/21

    *. the day itself

    (. your feelings

"ne natural solution is to go through eah of these topis in turn and use the ue ard toorganise what you say.

How to work itTo see how you an make this work# take a look at this video and note these points:

eah point is disussed in turn

there are pauses between eah setion

signpost language is used to show the e+aminer a new topi is being introdued

The reason that the video only shows the ue ard is that in the test itself it helps you to fouson the ue ard asyou speak. This does not mean that you look at it all the time beause youalso need to make eye ontat with the e+aminer but you should keep it in your hand andrefer to it onstantly.

Advantages it makes the task easier

This approah an make the task easier beause you always know what you are going to sayne+t and it allows you to pause in the right plaes. It an take the pressure off you. It workslike this:

"ne you have spoken about one topi# you look down at the ard for a moment

,ause and think about what to say ne+t and relax

Look up at the e+aminer# make eye ontat

Start again: -The ne+t thing I am going to tell you is/

This an help you beause one mistake andidates often make is to think they have to talkand talk without stopping. 0ou don1t. In fat# pausing orretly is part of flueny andoherene beause it allows your listener to understand your main points.

Advantages it helps fluency and coherence

  • 8/13/2019 33820700-CUE-CARD

    7/21

nother reason to try this approah is that it an help yourflueny and oherene band sore.To get this right there are 2 main points to fous on:

$. using signposting language to help your listener understand the main points you aremaking 3new post oming soon4

    2. e+panding the points you make with reasons and e+amples ! e+atly as you would inan essay 3new post oming soon4

    Does it always work?

In a word# no. I am always suspiious of teahers who use the word -must/. 5ifferent peopleare different and different things work for different people. In my e+periene# someandidates find this approah very helpful# while it onfuses others. 6y advie is to try it afew times and see if it works for you. If it doesn1t try something different.

    Some practice with oxopop

If you want some online pratie# I have posted a new task at 7o+opopwhere you an reordyourself and hopefully listen to others try the same. If you are new to this site# here is the link

to my previous posting about using 7o+opop:Speaking Test 1
