President's MessageThe Pensacola July Sectional was successful with the usual outstanding Panhandle hospitality. We thank Chairpersons, Myrl and John Eisinger and helpers for a job

well-done. The proceeds of this special summer sectional will go toward the renovation of the Pensacola clubhouse. Pensacola DBC has been playing off-site at the Bayview Community Center during the renovation and will return to 12th Avenue before this issue of SBN is received. Stay tuned for more to come on this transformation.

In keeping with our goal of increasing membership for 2013, Unit 219 sponsored an easybridge Certification Class taught by ACBL Director, Priscilla Smith on July 18th. There were ten very enthusiastic people

in attendance with high hopes of accomplishing this goal by attracting new members to their local clubs as well as to ACBL. In addition to easybridge classes, new mentoring programs will be started in Ft Walton Beach (Gayle Marr), Pensacola (Carla Burke) and Tallahassee (Beth Lines and Bruce Goodman). Sid Kalishman from Pensacola will implement new teaching programs in our senior and community centers. We welcome Amy Reznik from Tallahassee as a Unit 219 Board member. She is currently teaching easybridge and other successful programs and serving as our education Chair. Amy is replacing John Contarino, our Publicity Chair, who moved to Jacksonville. We will miss John, but we know he will be an asset to his new bridge community. Unit 219 will host sectional tournaments in Ft Walton Beach on October 11-13 and in Pensacola on November 1-3. Also, Unit 219 will be participating in STaC week on November 18-24 with Units 240 and 243. Make plans to attend all of these silver point events.Unit 219 and the Tallahassee Bridge Clubs have suffered a great loss; three of our longtime members, Bertha Easton, Mel Klein and Pug Buckwalter passed away. They were all avid bridge players and will be greatly missed at the tables. We send our sympathies to their many friends, partners and families.

Sue Smith is one of the shining stars of the Pensacola Duplicate Bridge Club (PDBC). She is one of the most competent managers the club has ever had, taking over the position in early 2011 without compensation, contributing her salary to the club. A director, District goodwill ambassador, certified TAP and easybridge instructor, Sue is also Unit 219’s rep to the District 9 Board of Directors and the Sunshine Bridge News Liaison for Unit 219.

Sue retired in 1984 and her husband, Bill, soon followed. Sue began a new hobby of oil painting and, together, she and her husband began gardening, bass fishing and joined a motorhome club in the Panhandle. They enjoyed traveling so much, they sold their home in 1993, and decided to travel full time, visiting Canada, Mexico and all 48 contiguous states and Alaska.

While spending a winter in South Florida, one of the weekly activities was bridge lessons. A former canasta card player, Sue found bridge very interesting and wanted to learn more. She did not have the opportunity until they moved back to the Pensacola area in 2001 to administer care to her husband’s mother. Sue joined ACBL and the Pensacola Duplicate Bridge Club in 2004, shortly before Hurricane Ivan. As Pensacola pieced their lives, homes and bridge club back together, Sue discovered first hand the importance of volunteering and how much work goes into running a bridge club. She became Party Chair, Membership Chair, and very involved in Pensacola’s sectional tournaments from the time she first joined the club.

Sue instituted Pensacola’s mentoring program and has helped grow the number of novices playing in the open games. She directs the largest game in Pensacola with the 199er’s playing concurrently with open pairs; that game was once dwindling drastically and she nurtured it back successfully. After teaching herself how to use the computer, ACBLscore, and how to manage a bridge club, she shares that knowledge with directors and anyone else who will listen! She’s written quick reference guides regarding how to set up special games, make reports, run a tournament and operate the computer and Bridgemates. She also designed the website for the club. Her helping hands have reached out to our sister club in Alabama where she built a website for eastern Shore DBC and also co-chaired their first tournament.

Anyone can see how valuable Sue Smith is to Pensacola and the bridge community at large. She is always willing to mentor anyone in any capacity regarding bridge. She does all of the above carrying an oxygen bottle due to her illness, yet says, “I feel truly blessed that the things I enjoy most – bridge, the computer and helping people – I am still capable of doing, and hopefully, I can make a difference.” You certainly do make a BIG difference, Sue, and we are all very grateful for your talents and your willingness to serve.

The Ft Walton Beach Bridge Club held a birthday celebration for five of their members, four of them are over 80 and one is over 90. Don’t they look beautiful? Their total ages add up to over 400 years! Alice made the gorgeous sea themed cake with handmade white chocolate seashells in celebration of all her friends.

On Friday, June 14, Pensacola Duplicate Bridge Club celebrated the 90th birthday of Eleanor Novosad with a surprise party. Members of her family, Laura Novosad, Claire Novosad and Diane Dillingham were present for the occasion.

eleanor started playing bridge in Denver, Colorado in the sixties and has been a member of PDBC since 1970. A true treasure to our club, we wish our friend many more birthdays yet to come.

Meet Betty sue Kalishman,Pensacola Duplicate Bridge Club's Newest Gold Life Master.

Betty Sue started playing duplicate bridge in Marianna, Florida in a small friendly club. When she and her partner, Mary Potts, discovered they could win with defense, there was no turning back. She later moved to Pensacola and there was a duplicate club within one block of her apartment. Betty Sue immediately joined. She was very lucky to find excellent partners, including her future husband, Sid and Evelyn Kolton.Betty Sue, evelyn, Bernice Friedman and Jean Lemox formed a team, played in a Birmingham, Alabama Regional Ladies' Swiss Team and WON! A member of the team they beat approached her afterwards and said, "My team is so good, there was no way we were going to lose. I want to thank you for a much-needed lesson in humility." How sweet it was.Her 15 minutes of fame came at a Regional in Memphis, Tennessee, playing in a Knockout Swiss Team. Betty Sue and Sid, her new husband, picked up a nice couple with less than 100 points. The Kalishman team had their first match playing against the Oswald Jacoby team, comprised of some of the best players in the world at that time. Luckily, Betty Sue did not know that and they won the match. When the match was over, Mr. Jacoby congratulated them on a great win. Nothing else happened at that tournament for the Kalishman team, but no one cared, because they had garnered a reputation above reproach. Many players came up to her and said, "Are you the ones that knocked out Jacoby?"Betty Sue and Sid continue to win in area Sectionals and Regionals in Open Pairs and Swiss Teams. She thanks her friend and steady partner, Diane Stillman, who has been a big help in bringing in the points she needed to reach the rank of Gold Life Master.Betty Sue equates reaching this milestone with bidding and making a vulnerable Grand Slam, Doubled!

    President's Message

There was an article in the last Sunshine Bridge News that noted 13 Florida Clubs were in the top 50 clubs in the entire country! Unit 240’s Vero Beach Club had the third highest table count of all the Florida clubs. That’s quite an accomplishment and speaks volumes for their management and teaching program! Congratulations Vero Beach! There would be one more in the list if Orlando Metropolitan Bridge Club counted all the games/tables held under one roof but they are not a ‘managed’ club.

Fall is approaching quickly and the return of our snowbirds is just around the corner! With the snowbirds comes the Orlando Winter Regional to be held December 30th – January 5th. Unit 240 is going to sponsor Director’s courses to be held during the regional. Are you interested in becoming a certified ACBL Director? Already a Director? We’re going to offer a Director’s update course too! Details will be sent to all our Unit’s clubs and will be published as soon as we have the actual dates and times.

Looking forward to cooler weather and lots of bridge!

lTC for intermediate PlayersBy Monty Page

I got some e-mail feedback from my first article about eSP. A reader wrote to tell me that eSP was a term that had been coined by Jerry Helms, a well known professional player, teacher, and writer from North Carolina. He calls his slogans Jerryisms. Apparently, he was pretty excited to find out that a player of my caliber was endorsing his idea, at least that's the way I chose to view it. For the record, there are no Montyisms, simply because I've never had an original thought (just ask my wife). This e-mail was very good news for two reasons : we now know who to blame when eSP does not work out for us, and we also now know that at least one person actually read the article. I'm sure this new data will drive up the advertising rates for the Sunshine Bridge News. This month we're going to discuss another topic for which I bear absolutely no responsibility, it is called the Losing Trick Count, or LTC. I don't think he invented it, but a fellow named Ron Klinger wrote a book called "The Modern Losing Trick Count", in which he describes it fully. I imagine that Ron will be just as excited as Jerry was to discover that I agree with him on the value of this idea. If I inadvertently offer some advice that runs counter to his, well, just remember that Ron's playing record cannot bear comparison with mine. In fact, I am currently the only Tin Life Master in the ACBL. I was awarded this rank when I played so badly at a tournament that the ACBL actually took masterpoints away from me.The LTC is not a bidding convention, it is a method of hand evaluation. Since the 1930s, bridge players have been taught to evaluate their hands' trick taking potential by counting points. This works very well for two balanced hands facing each other, but the more unbalanced one or both hands become, the less effective point counting is. Teachers have tried to overcome this problem by telling their students to add points for distribution. I gave up counting points for distribution a long time ago, evaluating a hand to account for distribution is just too complicated to be quantified easily, I find just eyeballing the hand for upgrades or downgrades works OK. Luckily, the LTC is disgustingly simple, and surprisingly accurate. It is only used AFTeR you have found a trump fit of at least 8 cards. LTC works like this, count 1 loser for each missing Ace, King, or Queen. Seems simple, doesn't it. These are 3 loser suits : Jxx, xxxx, JTxxx. These are 2 loser suits : Axx, Qxxx, xx, QJx, Qx. These are one loser suits: AQx, Kx, x. There are never more losers in a suit than there are cards in that suit. In the following hand there are 7 losers : ♠ : Axxxx ♥ : KQx ♦ : xx ♣ : KJx. The losers are : KQ of spades, A of hearts, AK of diamonds, AQ of clubs. The next step is to estimate the number of losers in partner's hand, based on his bidding. Luckily, we're used to estimating his points, and there is a simple conversion to losers. In chart form, the conversion looks like this : Points Losers Points Losers 6-9 9 16-18 6 10-12 8 19-21 5 13-15 7 22+ 4You don't need to memorize the whole chart, just one line. From that point move one loser for every 3 points. I always remember that minimum opening hands generally have 7 losers. So what do you do with the loser count? Add your losers to partner's estimated losers (AFTeR you've found a trump fit), and subtract from 24. That gives you a count of potential winners. Why 24? Imagine you hold a 4333 yarborough. You have 12 losers (the 4th card in the 4 card suit is not a loser), and you have no winners. If partner has a similar hand, he also has 12 losers and no winners. Therefore, winners plus losers always total 24. every time one of you adds an honor (A, K, or Q), you add one (potential) winner, and eliminate one loser.

    UNIT243

President's MessageOur Unit 243 Regional was a success due in no small part to the hard work of your Board members.

Our attendance was down about 2% over last year and your response to the survey was overwhelmingly positive. Special thanks to Bill Rauld and Marty Robins for their great work on schedule and hotel co-ordination for all events. Also Keith Gellman for his energy in not only organizing the caddies but helping whenever needed. Jean Spector was tireless, as always, in running the prize and partnership desk with help from Barbra & Joanne. Unfortunately Unit 243 suffered a loss of approximately $5,000.00 due mostly to the cost of the 4th of July dinner. This is the reason that your Board has changed both the dates and venue for future Regionals, beginning in 2014.

Holding the tournament in July is not feasible, but a winter tournament should increase attendance and coupled with the help of the Bonaventure Hotel and Spa to keep costs down, should insure success.

Our next tournament is our Sectional in February in Pompano, where Marge & Jean with help from your Board members plan for lots of fun and silver points, so start planning to play - “lots”.

As always all of us hope that all of you will support our local clubs - let's get into the clubs and out of the summer heat and play LOTS of bridge.
