Saint Peter’s Church is a Catholic community devoted to deep and abiding friendship with Jesus Christ. We strive to build upon the legacy of faith entrusted to us by the Catholic pioneers who courageously established Saint Peter’s – an ethnically and economically diverse community unified through the power of the Holy Spirit in the truth and love of Jesus Christ. Mindful of this legacy as well as our need for ongoing conversion amidst new challenges, today, in our fourth century, we seek friendship with Jesus through our commitments to:

2015 Safe Nights at St. Peter’s

Joe and Jennifer Tersero’s

Coordinator Reflections

This year, St. Peter’s Safe Nights schedule changed

from our previous Christmas week to a New Year’s

week beginning Sunday, December 27 concluding on

January 3. In our second year as coordinators, we

enjoyed the change because the extra time was

beneficial in preparing for our guests.

Throughout the week, our parish served 200 guests

averaging 28 adults each night plus one four-year old

child with his father on three nights.

Fortunately, the number of people needing assistance

this year was down from previous years. This was

especially true for children. We only had one 4-year-

old child this year and, although heartbreaking, Jen

and I were glad to see our parish community make

his three-night stay as pleasant as possible. When we

left Saturday night, he was lying next to his dad

reading his Corduroy book and playing with his cars.

Thank You to whoever gave him those gifts!

Before we knew if there was going to be any children,

Jen was out shopping for a coat and saw a sales rack

full of children’s coats. She purchased one with the

intention of donating it to LifeStyles of Southern

Maryland. As inspired by the Holy Spirit, the coat

Jennifer purchased was a perfect fit for the young boy

who was absolutely delighted to have a real coat

instead of the thin hoody he wore when he came in.

Thank you to the many parishioners who helped. In

all, we had 165 parish members and staff who assisted

with various functions necessary to provide what

most of the guests agree is “one of the best places to

stay.” These included: 3 meal coordinators

(breakfast, lunch and dinner); 20 meal captains; 110

meal volunteers; a 6-member setup crew; 10-member

laundry crew; 7 night monitors; 2 day monitors, and

a 10-member tear down and transport crew.

Special thanks to Harry and Mary Frauenfelder

(logistics assistance), David Snellings (shower set-

up), Ron Townsend (keeping the school up to

standards), and Mrs. Durkins’ 4th grade class for the

presents they prepared. We’d be remiss if we didn’t

thank our parish priests, Deacon Robert Martin and

all of the parish ministries and councils, including St.

Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Daughters Court

St. Peter 1618, Dr. John Henry Griffin Knights of

Columbus, Boy Scouts Troop 417, and so many

others.

As for personal reflections, caring for the poor in our

community was nothing new to Jennifer as she grew

up in a very devout Catholic family. In fact, her

dedication to caring for the poor was one of the

qualities that attracted me most to her – even to the

point of letting her know I loved her on our third

date. It almost scared her away! However, I said it

from my heart, meant it, and God blessed us through

the Sacrament of Marriage at Saint Peter’s on

December 29th, 2012. Yes, we celebrated our

anniversary during Safe Nights.

Finally, while growing up, Jen and I truly admired

Mother Teresa, who said,

"At the end of our lives, we will not be judged

by how many diplomas we have received,

how much money we have made or how

many great things we have done. We will be

judged by ‘I was hungry and you gave me

food. I was naked and you clothed me. I was

homeless and you took me in.”

May the Love, Peace, and Grace of our Lord be with

you all. Joe and Jennifer Tersero

BAPTISM OF THE LORD

“All the Old Covenant prefigurations find their fulfillment in Christ Jesus. He begins his public life after having himself baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan. After his resurrection Christ gives this mission to his apostles:

‘Go therefore and make disciples of all

nations, baptizing them in the name of

the Father and of the Son and of the

Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all

that I have commanded you.’ Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to ‘fulfill all righteousness.’ Jesus’ gesture is a manifestation of his self-emptying. The Spirit who had hovered over the waters of the first creation descended then on the Christ as a prelude of the new creation, and the Father revealed Jesus as his ‘beloved Son.’ ”

The Baptism of the Lord January 10, 2016

On January 15th, 1933, twelve days after the end of her appearances to five children in Beauraing, Belgium, Our Lady appeared in Belgium again—in Banneux—to 11-year-old Mariette Beco, the first of eight apparitions that would end March 2nd.

The evening of January 19th—the third apparition—Mariette asked the beautiful lady for her name. “I am the Virgin of the Poor,” Our Lady replied, and led Mariette back to the previously unknown spring she had shown Mariette the evening before. “This spring is reserved for all nations—to relieve the sick,” Our Lady said.

Year of Mercy Reflection Karen, Patti, and Jimmy had a problem. They were coordinating the Catholic Charities Christmas Angel Tree program, where generous people “adopt” and provide Christmas presents for children in need. With a week to go, 300 children still needed “adopting”! With Msgr. Enzler’s help, Karen, Patti, and Jimmy reached out to the Archdiocesan community – would people Walk with Francis to support these kids? Yes! In six days, all children had been “adopted” and thousands of dollars donated. How beautiful to see so many

people recognize that mercy is a loving response to the needs of others! Find ways to share mercy with others in our community at mercy.adw.org.

Designated Charity: Catherine Foundation The Designated Charity this weekend is the Catherine Foundation. They will receive at least 1% of this week’s offertory collection. There are envelopes at the entrances to church that you may use. Please put your envelope in the regular collection basket. The Designated Charity next week will be Angels Watch Women’s Shelter.

National Collection Next Weekend A collection will be taken next weekend for the Church Missions within the United States. This appeal will be made to support poorer dioceses of our Church. Right here in the United States, some dioceses are unable to provide fundamental pastoral care for their faithful. These “home mission” dioceses cannot support an adequate number of priests. They cannot afford funding for youth ministry programs or religious education. Please help strengthen the Church at home with a generous donation to this week’s collection for the Church. Please put your envelope in the regular collection basket.

Support Group at St. Peter's St. Peter's is a local host site for Al-Anon meetings on Thursdays in St. Peter’s School from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. in the P.E. room. Please call the Office for Christian Formation at 301-843-9583 if you have any questions.

March for Life Bus Information January 22, 2016, is the 43rd annual March for Life in Washington D.C. St. Peter's will provide bus transportation to and from the march for anyone who wants to attend. The buses will leave St. Peter’s at 10:30 a.m. and depart Washington at 4:00 p.m. Please contact the rectory at 301-843-8916 or [email protected] to reserve a seat. For more information contact Kim Cardwell, at 301-481-8463 or [email protected].

The Rosary is prayed each morning before daily Mass at about 7:30 a.m. by an informal group of worshipers. The daily rosary intention is for “vocations from our parish, each and every intention that you may have and for all the deceased members of the parish, those who will die today and especially within the hour and for the souls in purgatory.” This early-morning devotion has taken place at St. Peter’s for many years. Please join us!!

Moments of Mercy

January 2016 When we think about pilgrimages, we probably think about medieval people walking great distances to awe-inspiring churches. Yet, Pope Francis describes what is at the heart of pilgrimage and encourages us to each make one during this Jubilee of Mercy. He writes that "life itself is a pilgrimage, and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim traveling along the road, making his way to the desired destination" (MV, no. 14). Pope Francis encourages each of us to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Door in our diocese some time during this Jubilee of Mercy. Being committed to the journey of pilgrimage helps us focus our attention on our spiritual journey and walk closer with God. Similarly, our daily journey to live out the mercy of God "is also a goal to reach and requires dedication and sacrifice" (MV, no. 14).

1. With your family or a parish group, plan a pilgrimage to the Holy Door within your diocese for some time during this year. 2. Each day, give yourself one small goal of mercy, compassion, and love to journey toward—for example, being kind to a difficult coworker—so that, by those actions, you are able to walk closer to God on the pilgrimage of Christian life.

Noches Seguras en San Pedro

Reflexiones de los Coordinadores

Joe y Jennifer Tersero

alojarse.” Éstos incluyen: 3 coordinadores de comidas

(desayuno, almuerzo y cena); 20 capitanes de comidas;

Unagradecimiento especial a Harry and Mary

negligentes si no damos gracias a nuestros párrocos,

hecho. Seremos juzgados por tuve hambre y

me disteis de comer. Yo estaba desnudo y me

vestisteis. Yo estaba en la calle y me

acogistes.”

advice Advice is like a good road map. It can show us the best way to go, but we have to decide to make the trip. And just as no road map can include all the detours and roads under construction, so no advice can substitute for our own judgment and character. On the road of life we all have to get lost and fi nd our way on our own. We cannot avoid making mistakes. Unfortunately, too many of us fail to learn from our mistakes and that only makes matters worse. As a witty person said, “Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.” In other words, when we try and fail, at least we have the experience of what did not go right.

The experience of trying is more important than any failure.Father Joe Breighner

• Understand and proclaim His saving truth revealed in the Bible in union with the official teaching authority of the Catholic Church.

• Worship joyfully His living presence in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist.

• Recognize His face in those we are privileged to serve and protect, particularly the poor and vulnerable.

• Welcome Him in each other through our fellowship and unity amidst the rich diversity of our parish community.

• Encounter Him and the beauty of His creation by preserving our parish as a peaceful and prayerful sanctuary.

• Hear His personal call to holiness and help families embrace it in all vocations, especially to priesthood or consecrated life.

• Imitate His generous self-giving as a way of life that expresses our gratitude to Him and our love for God and neighbor.
