• Aunque se acepta que el cubismo como movimiento artístico comienza en 1907, fecha de Las señoritas de la calle Avinyó, de Pablo Picasso (ése es el nombre original de Las señoritas de Avignon), la verdad es que ese cuadro supone una culminación de experiencias iniciales, ya en 1906.
• Dos son los formuladores del cubismo, Georges Braque y Pablo Picasso.

• Comparte determinados aspectos como la admiración, en la historia del arte de Seurat y, sobre todo, de Cézanne.
• Además siguen a Matisse en la nueva admiración por el arte de los pueblos no europeos, la escultura africana y oceánica.
• Los principales temas serán los retratos y las naturalezas muertas urbanas, los elementos que se disponen de modo caótico sobre la mesa de un café.

• A comienzos de 1908 Braque y Picasso realizan una estancia en el sur de Francia, en la localidad de L' Estaque; será un año de intensa amistad y trabajo en común, de forma que en apenas un año el cubismo tiene unas sólidas bases y un perfil propio.
• El cubismo es una titánica reflexión intelectual y visual sobre la forma.
• Pese al aspecto de algunos cuadros cubistas la forma siempre fue respetada, no cruzando nunca el umbral de lo abstracto.

Se pueden distinguir diversas fases en el desarrollo del cubismo.
• Después del momento inicial, hacia 1910-1911 se define el llamado cubismo analítico, el más críptico de todos, donde forma y fondo se entremezclan, se confunden.
– A partir de entonces la pintura recompone su imagen, proceso en el que cabe mencionar a Juan Gris (1887-1927). Es cuando surge la técnica del collage, en la que se recortan planos de diversos materiales y se pegan a la superficie del lienzo.
– El comienzo de la Primera Guerra Mundial fracciona el cubismo, que seguirá subsistiendo en experiencias como
• el purismo, • la Section d'Or • el constructivismo ruso.

Tête de Femme by the 20th-century artist Pablo Picasso is painted in the cubist style. The surface is broken into a series of small, flat planes of color that create a sense of form and light. Picasso’s interest in African mask work can be seen in his handling of the woman’s face, which is flattened and stylized.
