YOUR LETTERS

I don’t often consider asking the Council for anything. But, I think now that a new Council is in, I think now is the appro-priate timing.

Last week, down at a local supermarket a drunk bloke stepped into someone else’s family car and absolutely scared the wits of the kids, and their mum.

The same sort of incident occurred at a local fast food outlet, causing a great deal of panic, and stress for the families.

The liquor abuse in the town streets as far as I’m concerned is just ridiculous.

I would like to see the Coun-cil place a liquor bylaw in the streets of our lovely town, and

prevent such incidents occur-ring.

I know that the police have their hands full already, but if this sort of thing keeps on occurring, I’m just afraid someone may consider placing the law into their own hands. Please - enough is enough.

Thanks to voters for support

To all the Te Awamutu and Kihikihi voters. Thanks for your support I received in the local elections for the Te Awamutu Community Board.

Although not successful (this time) I enjoyed the contact with some of you via phone calls.

I wish the incoming Board well for the next three years.

BERNARD WESTERBAAN

The people of Kihikihi are extremely disappointed to fi nd their mural of polo signifi cance and the local Presbyterian Church tagged during recent nights.

The Rotary Club of Kihikihi shares the disap-pointment, as many years of generous giving to schools and young teens by the club

makes us feel as though some of our giving has been in vain.

To those of you who read this letter, may you take time to put ear to ground, read the vibes to get taggers to help clean the village walls.

Graffi ti urges rethink for Kihikihi Rotarians

It is good news that coun-cillors and Mayor want to upgrade the main street.

My only suggestion is to get rid of all heavy traffi c. A by-pass or alternative route has been talked about for over a decade, but has been shelved because it is in the too hard basket.

With the upgrading of the dairy factory and the sale-yards, it is inevitable that there is going to be even more

heavy traffi c using the main street in future.

It is common sense to know that the longer this problem is put off being solved, the more it is going to cost, both in dollars or someone’s life.

Te Awamutu is a vibrant town, but Council’s lack of vi-sion and priorities is well be-hind both Otorohanga and Te Kuiti who have had a bypass for many years.

REMEMBER the rip roaring heyday of radio? Remember listening to ‘The Goons’, ‘Flash Gordon’ and other famous shows local theatre can’t afford the rights to?Members of Te Awamutu Little Theatre, including (above from left) Nicola Bjerga, Geoff Boxell, Louise Dobbs, Dave Moore, Ross McLeod, Glenda Barclay and Oliver Barratt, are offering you a refresher course for the Rose and Cultural Festival. For four nights and one matinee players will be

presenting a selection of radio plays, performed live and lively.Buried treasure, uninhibited house-keepers and 25 foot high mutant mice will be brought to life in an evening of musical, mysterious, comic, chaotic aural entertainment.Evening shows are Fridays and Saturdays, November 2,3,9 and 10 and matinee is Sunday, November 4.Tickets are available from the Te Awamutu i-Site Centre. Photo supplied.

Renowned speaker Celia Lashlie is coming to Te Awamutu in November thanks to Altrusa Club.

The club has organised a special guest speaker evening to be held at the Te Awamutu Bible Chapel on Tuesday, November 6 at 7.30pm where Lashlie will speak on “Grow-ing Gorgeous Boys into Good Men”.

A researcher and social commen-tator, Lashlie worked in the Prison Service for 15 years, starting in December 1985 as the fi rst woman to work as a prison offi cer in a New Zealand male prison.

Her fi nal role within the Service was as manager of Christchurch Women’s Prison, a position she left in September 1999.

Lashlie, who has a degree in an-thropology and Maori, is the mother

of two adult children. She now works on a number of projects, all of which are linked to im-proving the lives of at-risk children and empowering families to fi nd their own

solutions to the challenges they face.

In September 2004, she completed the ‘Good Man’ project. The project, which facilitated discussion within and between 25 boys’ schools through-out New Zealand, aimed to create a working defi nition of what makes a good man in the 21st century.

What arose from the project was a signifi cant insight into the minds of teenage boys, and what they are feeling at this period in their lives. There are also some challenging sug-gestions for parents, as well as a call for women in particular to rethink the way they interact with the men in their lives.

Her fi rst book, ‘The Journey to Prison: Who goes and why’, was a be-stseller and critical success. This was followed by ‘He’ll Be OK: Growing Gorgeous Boys into Good Men’, which has proved to be an enduring best-seller since its initial publication.

House fi re warningA home in the process of being

renovated was badly damaged by fi re on Monday afternoon.

Firefi ghters say the worst aspect is that the fi re was com-pletely preventable.

Te Awamutu and Otorohanga fi refi ghters attended the Te Kawa Road fi re which was called in at

about 3pm by a neighbour. It had a good hold when they

arrived and the roof and ceiling of the home were badly damaged, plus there is signifi cant damage to the kitchen.

Occupants had left the property about an hour beforehand, but had emptied their ashtray into a

plastic bin in the kitchen prior to departing, which then ignited.

Firefi ghters recommend:● Always pour water over butts

in an ashtray before disposing of them;

● Place butts or ashes in a metal container well clear of the house.

WHO SAYS YOUCAN’T ALWAYSGET WHAT YOU WANT?

From page 1.Alan Dalton, speak-

ing on behalf of the Fire Force, said the Pirongia volunteers would not be where they are today if it had not been for Mr Morris’ mentoring and assist-ance.

“You have guided and motivated all of us and it has been a privilege to work alongside such a dedicated and quali-fi ed fi refi ghter - a man we can all look up to and for inspiration.”

Taranaki-King Coun-try MP Shane Ardern said fi refi ghters’ wives, like MPs’ wives, knew what it was like to have ‘cold feet’ climbing into bed next to them late at night.

He paid tribute to Dame Margaret, for her efforts in turning around a “disparate (Fire Service) organisa-tion”.

Mr Ardern said as a rural man he was well aware of the important role rural fi refi ghters played in their com-munities.

“Rural communi-ties always rely on voluntary services and organisations and that is something a lot of our urban counterparts take for granted.”

He said Mr Morriss’ record of service was remarkable and that it was tremendous that he was passing on his knowledge to those fol-lowing in his footsteps.

Mayor Alan Living-ston expressed ap-preciation on behalf of Waipa District as well as the local communi-ties. Mr Livingston said Mr Morriss had stepped in to help the fl edgling Fire Force and he acknowledged the work Pirongia volunteers do for their growing community.

Former Te Awamutu Chief Fire Offi cer, Don Hallett said he could not let the occasion pass without talking about Mr Morriss’ con-tribution to Fire Serv-ice competitions.

“Robbie was the standpipe man for Te Awamutu when we won three New Zea-land Championships and a lot of sub associa-tion championships.”

Mr Morriss’ daughter Christine said it was ‘awesome’ that every-one had turned out to honour ‘a great man’.

She said that she and her sister Susan had enjoyed a fantastic childhood, travelling with their parents to

Te Awamutu Brigade training and competi-tions and getting to know some wonderful people.

She said her father now regarded Pirongia Fire Force as his sec-ond family and he was loving working with the Fire Force and its cadets.

She called on those present who had been involved in competi-tions with her father to raise a toast to ‘water on’.

Mr Morris was obvi-ously humbled by the presentation and the sentiments expressed by speakers.

He said he had en-joyed the camaraderie that was shared by fi refi ghters and he looked forward to more developments for Pirongia Fire Force.

Regional Fire Manager for Bay of Plenty/Waikato, Owen Kinsella had earlier said that he knew it was Mr Morriss’ aim to see Pirongia Fire Force established as a Fire Service brigade and the way the Fire Force was being talked about throughout the region, there was every possibility that could happen.

Note-able entry fi nishes career

PORCELAIN artiist Maureen Cooper makes a note in the recently released New Zealand Porcelain Artists Diary which features two of her plates (right). 298075AD

By Cathy AsplinIt is a little ironic that Maureen

Cooper has two plates featuring in the New Zealand Porcelain Artists Diary for 2008.

That’s because she recently made a decision to pack up her paint brushes and retire from porcelain painting after more than 30 years.

“It’s essentially an expensive hobby, that requires a lot of time and patience. As I’m getting older it is be-coming more diffi cult to do the work and in the end I decided to stop.

“I’ve got plenty of examples of my work at home to enjoy, I’ve kept some for my family and I’ve given some away as gifts.”

Mrs Cooper was also heavily in-

volved in fl oral art before taking up porcelain painting and her work also featured in a fl oral art diary.

“The fl oral art work helped me enormously when I started painting porcelain. Over the years I have been a member of the Waikato Porcelain Artists and have taught others the skill of porcelain painting.

“But the work requires fi ne detail - so you have to have a steady hand and good eyesight, which gets harder as you get older.

“The process also requires bulding up many layers of pigment and this takes considerable time.

“I’m delighted to have two of my pieces feature in the diary, it’s a good way to fi nish.”

‘Blaze of glory’ for local outlet

Te Awamutu has the best North Island Civic Video store south of the Bombays.

Kay and Grant Hanna picked up the central region winners’ trophy at the Civic Video conference in Christchurch recently and now have it proudly dis-played in their store.

Mrs Hanna says a number of fac-tors were taken into account for the competition.

“A mystery shopper visits the store to check a number of items, including service and overall appearance of the outlet.

“The recent downsizing of the store was also taken into account. The judges were impressed that we took the initia-tive to approach Domino’s Pizza about opening in part of our store.

“In the end we created two stores, so Civic Video has two thirds the original fl oorsize and Domino’s has a third next door.

“But the removing of videos from our store meant that we still have plenty of room to stock over 6000 DVD titles.”

Mrs Hanna says their membership has also continued to increase since the changes.

“The combination of movies and piz-zas works well, so more people are at-tracted to this area.”

She says the continued customer support and the great staff who work at the Te Awamutu store were also im-portant factors in their win.

“We have a small, but awesome, team here. Thankyou to everyone for their support.”

Petersen rides off with two NZ titles

By Colin ThorsenEmma Petersen caused a

boilover upstaging world ranked Rachel Mercer at the Lion Foun-dation Club Road Cycling Na-tionals at Karaka.

The 17-year-old Te Awamutu Sports Club rider blitzed the un-der-19 women’s time trial fi eld.

Her time of 24.14 minutes for the 15km was 29 seconds faster than that of second placed Mercer (Wellington), with third placed Phillipa Swain (Inver-cargill) a further seven seconds adrift.

It was an astonishing feat con-sidering Mercer is a time trial specialist, who placed fourth at the junior worlds in Mexico in August - and Petersen still has another year in this age group.

“I thought they were calling out the wrong name when they announced me as the winner,” an ecstatic Petersen told the Courier.

“Time trialling is not my strong point, it was only the second time I had competed over 15km.”

It was in fact a watershed event for the multi-talented Te Awamutu teenager. She had never previously won a time trial at any championship level.

It certainly sparked another outstanding ride by Petersen in the U19 women’s 78km road race.

She found herself doing all the ‘donkey work’ in the chas-ing bunch after Chloe Hosking (Canberra), Emma Crum (Coun-ties Manukau) and Rachel Mer-cer had formed a three-strong breakaway.

“There wasn’t much chasing going on in the bunch so I at-tacked on my own, bridging the gap to the three front runners with about 12km to go,” says Petersen.

The quartet held their advan-tage until the fi nish where they featured in a lengthy sprint for the line.

The Australian (Hosking) crossed half a wheel in front of Petersen to take the gold - but not the New Zealand title which rightfully went to Petersen. Crum was third and Mercer

fourth.Mercer had placed sixth in the

road race at the junior worlds.Petersen is the second Te

Awamutu Sports’ rider in as many years to win the New Zealand U19 women’s road ti-tle, following in the footsteps of Rushlee Buchanan.

The Graham Bunn coached Petersen will be riding in In-vercargill next month at the Oceania Championships.

It would be a brave person to bet against her making the

New Zealand team for the 2008 Junior World Road Cycling Championships in South Africa to be named at the completion of the event.

Last month she was fi rst over-all U20 woman at the national schools’ road cycling champion-ships at Mt Wellington, winning the criterium and placing second in both the time trial and hill climb. Prior to that she won both the points race and road race at Levin.

The Te Awamutu Club will have plenty to celebrate next month.

As well as marking 50 years of the local social spot it will also show how far it has come in half a decade.

The club opened its doors in 1957, but it was in 1956 that an enthusiastic group of people gath-ered with the intention of providing a social meeting place in town.

A public meeting followed and

eventually Mayor CF Jacobs was installed as committee president.

While the people for a committee were easy to fi nd, a premises to house the club wasn’t. After many unsuccessful attempts to fi nd a suitable venue, the former home of Frank Pinfold on Alexandra Street was purchased for £4550.

To cover refi tting the home 1200 £5 debentures were issued and a mortgage taken out for £1500. The club was formally opened by the Mayor on May 4, 1957 with 215 members.

Fifty years later history is repeat-ing - the club has a hardworking core of committee members deter-mined to see the club prosper, it recently had a refurbishment and the membership is similar (250).

Visitors to the club will see it has a function room, large bar area, snug and pool room. Committee members have worked hard to give the club a facelift with fresh paint, new fi xtures and furnishings.

The snug features the original wooden fl oors (now beautifully polished) and it provides a comfort-able, quiet seating area.

A spacious new deck at the back of the club allows for some outdoor entertaining when the weather is good and a spot for smokers.

The club has retained its large carpark and is just a stone’s throw from the CBD. It is an ideal venue for functions, meetings and celebra-tions. Five local service clubs now use it for their regular meetings.

To celebrate the 50 Year mile-stone at the Te Awamutu Club, a fun fi fties social has been planned for November 10 (7.30pm start).

Past, present and prospective members have been invited and the evening has a dress up theme with a prize for the best dressed couple.

A fi rst drink on the house and supper are included in the ticket price. A live band will provide the music, while a courtesy bus will be running during the evening.

Tickets are just $15 from the Te Awamutu Club, TML and Sanders Chemist (no door sales).

Te Awamutu Club celebrating golden milestone

BEFORE (above): The back entrance to the Te Awamutu Club as it was in the early 1990’s.

AFTER (right): An expansive new deck has been added to allow for outdoor entertaining and an area for smokers.

Comforts of home for Frank Frank Pinfold should feel ‘right at home’ when he visits

the Te Awamutu Club on Alexandra Street. That’s because it was his home for almost three years

prior to the property being purchased by the fl edgling club in 1957.

“The committee actually looked at a lot of properties, but they couldn’t fi nd anything suitable or available when they needed it.

“I was moving out to a farm at Te Rore, so the committee decided to buy the Alexandra Street house and refi t it.

“We think of it as being in a central spot today, but when it was fi rst purchased there were a few grumblings that it was just too far from town!”

Mr Pinfold was delighted to become an inaugural mem-ber of the club, spent several years on the committee and did two stints as president (1963-64, 1971-72).

He also became the club’s fi rst life member. Mr Pinfold says he’s getting on a bit these days to be

going to the club, but is happy to see his former home look-ing so good and that it is still fulfi lling its original role of a comfortable place to socialise.

LEFT: Te Awamutu Club life member Frank Pinfold (90) playing a game of pool in his ‘home away from home.’

NEWEST life member of the Te Awamutu Club, John Hare (left) enjoys a ‘quiet one’ on the deck with president Nod Chandler, who presented the award. Mr Hare was recognised for the extensive work he has done for the club, with 20 years on the committee, seven years as manager and a term as president (1992-93).

Cycling club ‘boxes’ above its weight

Te Awamutu Sports Cycling Club fi nished fourth overall out of 31 clubs behind Pegasus (Christchurch), Coun-ties Manukau and Ramblers (Hawkes Bay) at the national road championships at Karaka last week.

It was a great ac-complishment by a rural Waikato club up against city and re-gional outfi ts - Otago placed fi fth out of the 31 clubs.

Shem Rodger capped a memorable opening day for the club with gold in the under-23 men’s 40km time trial.

The 2006 junior world championship team pursuit silver medallist proved too strong for a classy fi eld, including Te Awamutu clubmates Peter Rennie and Ryan Wills.

Rodger won by a massive 28 seconds from Tho-mas Hanover (Counties), with Samuel Horgan (Pegasus) a further 15 seconds adrift third. Ren-nie was fi fth.

There was a raft of outstanding rides by Te Awamutu’s talented juniors.

Hayden McCormick set the ball rolling earlier in the day with a silver medal in the U15 boys’ 10km time trial. He won the sprint for second place, behind the runaway winner Pieter Bulling (Southland).

Andrew Hughes produced a special highlight of the championships, winning the silver medal in the AWD (athletes with disability) class.

It is hard enough to do a 20km time trial with two legs - to do it with one leg, and in a time of 37.01 is certainly impressive.

Day two was to prove just as successful for the Te Awamutu contingent.

In form Te Awamutu riders Shem Rodger, Ryan

Wills and Peter Ren-nie all featured in the U23 men’s 182km road event.

It proved to be a race of enormous attrition, with 21 of the 35 rid-ers entered failing to fi nish.

Rodger gutsed his way to a bronze medal, narrowly beaten in the sprint for second by Horgan, after El-liott Crowther (Mor-rinsville) had earlier broken clear to win by over three minutes. Wills placed forth.

McCormick went close to replicating his day one result, set-tling for a gutsy bronze medal in the U15 boys’ road race, behind Bull-ing and Alex McCory-Bowick (Counties).

The Te Awamutu whiz kid, coached by Brian Fleck, has another year in the U15 age group.

The three placegetters set a blistering pace rid-ing away from the 31-strong fi eld.

Fifteen minutes later Laura Gretton sprinted across the line to claim the silver medal in the U15 girls’ road race.

She was pipped by a mere 20cm for gold by So-phie Williamson (Wakatipu), with Alysha Keoth (Otago) crossing for bronze just metres behind.

These three riders had broken clear of the fi eld on the fi rst hill, less than 10km into the 38km race.

They increased their lead throughout the re-maining journey with some aggressive riding.

Gretton shows lots of promise.Chris Johnson was fourth in the Masters 5

78km road race, while Chris Gaze was fi fth in the 114km Masters I road race, fi nishing only 16 seconds behind the winner Deon Neems (Coun-ties Manukau).

North Island’s best

BMX WHIZ KIDS: North Island champions, from left, Rebecca Petch, Cody Hobbs, Joshua Smith, Caleb Loomans, Ryan Lewis with their trophies back at the Rewi Street track in Te Awamutu. Absent from photo: Codi Merito. 2980715AD

By Colin ThorsenTe Awamutu BMX Club presi-

dent Donna Hobbs had a grin from ear to ear throughout the North Island championships at Minogue Park.

Hobbs was trackside as the large contingent of Te Awamutu riders fl exed their muscle in a great show of strength - tak-ing out six North Island titles, as well as six other podium fi nishes.

It was the club’s younger bri-gade, those aged 9-12, who col-lected most of the spoils.

Rebecca Petch and Joshua Smith took out the nine year North Island championship double for the club, winning the girls’ and boys’ fi nals respec-tively.

Caleb Loomans kept the ball rolling winning the 11 year boys’ fi nal.

Former New Zealand Mighty 11’s captain Cody Hobbs put

all his experience to good effect cleaning up the 12 year boys’ championship.

Codi Merito, who makes the weekly trek from Raglan to Te Awamutu to train, showed he is still the best around in his age group - winning the 8-10 year cruiser class.

Ryan Lewis collected Te Awamutu’s second cruiser title, winning the 11-12 age group.

Podium placings were record-ed by Ronan Millar (2nd, 6 year boys), Harry McConnell (2nd, 10 year boys), Ryan Lewis (2nd, 12 year boys), Peter Anderson (2nd, 40-plus men), Codi Merito (3rd, 10 year boys), Craig Poyn-ter (3rd, 35-39 cruiser).

There were a few crashes that prevented some riders featur-ing.

Connor Loomans, who nor-mally fi nishes high in his age group, had an unfortunate fall in the dead man semi-fi nals heat (fi rst four across fi nish line

transfer through to fi nal). He was looking red hot to fea-

ture in the podium fi nishes. Cameron Petch also had the

misfortune to fall in the semis when looking good for the top three in his age group.

Key Kahue knockTe Oti Kahue was the toast

of the Pirongia cricket team on Saturday night.

Kahue came to the wicket with his side reeling at 90-6 replying to Morrinsville’s 164 of which Lee Bennett contributed 109.

Kahue’s swashbuckling knock of 44 got the home side to 168-8 in the second to last over of the match for a two wicket win in the Waikato Valley competition.

Richard Douch scored 39.Karl Swanson was Pirongia’s

most effective bowler with 5-23.Teams scoresheets must be at

the Courier by 10am Tuesday in order to be published.

Hot Hohepa bags hat-trick in win over Wallaroos

By Colin ThorsenCarla Hohepa is more than keep-

ing pace with the likes of All Black winger Joe Rokocoko scoring fi ve tries in her fi rst two internationals for the Black Ferns.

The Te Awamutu 22-year-old fol-lowed up her brace of tries on test debut against the Wallaroos in Wan-ganui last week with a hat-trick in the second test.

The Black Ferns won 29-12 at Trust Porirua Park, near Welling-ton, on Saturday night to clinch the series 2-0.

The Ferns played a well-construct-ed game in front of a lively crowd of 1200 people.

The Wallaroos again proved com-petitive but the Black Ferns were too classy and too physical for the Australians, scoring fi ve well ex-ecuted tries.

All three Blacks Ferns with Te Awamutu connections, who featured in the Courier recently, got their names on the score sheet.

Hohepa dotted down in the sixth, 19th and 55th minutes, fellow wing-

er Victoria Blackledge scored in the 10th minute, and halfback Emma Jensen kicked a marvellous conver-sion from the sideline.

A delayed diagnosis of severe endometriosis has sadly compromised our fertility, and after six years, we have exhausted all avenues to have a baby of our own. After three unsuccessful IVF attempts, our only hope of conceiving is by using an egg donor.

We are a well established, happily married couple with our own business. We enjoy the outdoors,

love our summer holidays at the beach, and value time shared with family.

We would dearly love the opportunity to also share these experiences with a child.

The joy in hearing the pitter patter of tiny feet in our home would be our dream come true.
