31st Sunday in Ordinary Time (Cycle C) A Sunday Reflection

Short people are often made fun of. Zacchaeus in our gospel reading today carries the additional burden of being a tax collector—despised and hated by his own people. Perhaps he had an intuition that, because of this, people would not let him approach Jesus. But he is intent in seeing him and so climbs the tree. And up there, Mercy meets him: “come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house” (Lk 19:5).

Let us reflect on how many times we have been an obstacle to others who want to approach Jesus. Others who, perhaps, were not as resourceful as Zacchaeus was, and who will never encounter the merciful gaze that will save them.

Jesus invites himself to Zacchaeus’ house, and he responds by making reparation for the wrongs he has done. Still, many grumble because the Lord is staying “at the house of a sinner” (19:7), forgetting that “the Son of Man has come to seek and save what was lost” (19:10). May we never put roadblocks in the path of those who seek to change their lives. Rather, let us look at them with Jesus’ eyes and extend our hand in welcome. God bless you.

Reflexión Dominical Las personas de corta estatura son con frecuencia blanco de

burlas. Zaqueo además lleva la carga adicional de ser un publicano, un recaudador de impuestos—despreciado y odiado por su propio pueblo. Quizás intuía que por esa razón nadie lo dejaría acercarse a Jesús. Pero está empeñado en verlo y así, se sube a un árbol. Y es allí donde la Misericordia lo encuentra: “bájate pronto, porque hoy tengo que hospedarme en tu casa” (Lc 19,5).

Pensemos; ¿cuántas veces hemos sido obstáculo para otros que querían acercarse a Jesús? Otros que, quizás, no fueran tan recursivos como Zaqueo y que por ello nunca encontrarán la mirada misericordiosa que los salva.

Jesús se invita a la casa de Zaqueo y este responde haciendo reparación por el mal que ha causado. A pesar de ello, muchos murmuran porque el Señor va a hospedarse en casa de un pecador (19,7), olvidando que “el Hijo del Hombre ha venido a buscar y a salvar lo que se había perdido” (19,10). Que nunca pongamos barreras en el camino de los que buscan cambiar su vida. Más bien mirémoslos con los ojos de Jesús, y extendámosles la mano en señal de bienvenida. Que Dios los bendiga.

Why 40 Hours Devotion? (I) ON DECEMBER 8, 9 & 10 our parish will celebrate the 40 Hours Devotion. We

thought you would like to know more about the practice and how it started and why. This article and two more to follow will answer those questions.

For us Catholics, the Mass is the central act of worship. It is an act that participates in the eternal reality of our Lord's passion, death, and resurrection. Many Catholics also wish to be able to pray in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament outside of Mass. The Second Vatican Council upheld and encouraged the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament outside of Mass. Such devotion derives from the sacrifice of the Mass and serves to move us to both sacramental and spiritual communion with our Lord. Pope Saint John Paul II repeatedly 'highly recommended' public and private devotion of the Blessed Sacrament including processions on the Feast of Corpus Christi (the Body of Christ) and the 40 Hours Devotion.

Why do we use a period of 40 semi-continuous hours? Why not 20 or 30 or 50 hours? The number 40 has historically, since very ancient times, signified a 'sacred' period of time. The rain during the time of Noah lasted 40 days and nights; the Jews wandered in the desert for 40 years before reaching the Promised Land; Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days before beginning his public ministry; we observe Lent for 40 days; we also remember that traditional '40 hour period' from our Lord's burial until his resurrection.

¿Qué es la devoción de las 40 Horas? (I) EL 8, 9 Y 10 DE DICIEMBRE nuestra parroquia celebrará la devoción de las 40

Horas. Pensamos que les gustaría saber más sobre esta práctica, sobre sus comienzos y su razón de ser. En esta y las próximas dos semanas responderemos a esas preguntas.

La misa es el acto central de adoración para los católicos; uno por el que participamos de la eterna realidad de la pasión, muerte y resurrección del Señor. Muchos católicos también desean orar en presencia del Santísimo Sacramento fuera de la misa. El Concilio Vaticano Segundo mantuvo y animó la adoración del Santísimo Sacramento fuera de la misa, pues esta devoción se deriva del Santo Sacrificio y nos impulsa a la comunión sacramental y espiritual con el Señor. El papa San Juan Pablo II repetidas veces “recomendó altamente” la devoción pública y privada al Santísimo Sacramento, incluyendo la procesión del Corpus Christi y la devoción de las 40 Horas.

¿Por qué este período de 40 horas semi continuas? ¿Por qué no 20 o 30 o 50 horas? Desde la antigüedad, el número 40 históricamente ha significado un período “sagrado” de tiempo. La lluvia en los tiempos de Noé duró 40 días con sus noches; los judíos vagaron por el desierto durante 40 años antes de llegar a la Tierra Prometida. November is Stewardship Month in the Archdiocese of Miami. Jesus reached out to Zacchaeus Through Zacchaeus’ conversion and faith, and in his generosity to the poor and anyone he wronged, Jesus states that salvation has come to his house. How generous are we, as Christian stewards, in giving back to God a portion of our gifts — especially in difficult times? Noviembre es el Mes de la Mayordomía en la Arquidiócesis de Miami. Jesús se acercó a Zaqueo y al ver su conversión y su fe, y por su generosidad con los pobres y con todos a los que hizo daño, Jesús afirma que la salvación ha llegado a su casa. ¿Qué tan generosos somos, como administradores cristianos, en devolverle a Dios una porción de nuestros dones, especialmente en tiempos difíciles?

Holy Lives/Vidas Santas VENERABLE RAFAEL CORDERO Y MOLINA (1790-1868) — Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1790, the son of poor tobacco farmers. Although they were not slaves, the children were not allowed to attend school because they were black. With what little education they had, the parents taught Rafael to read; he developed a passion for literature and was determined to become a teacher.

He became a tobacco farmer after the death of his parents. At the age of 20 he managed to open a school in San Germán, and would never accept money or gifts for his teaching, relying only on what his farming produced. He would be at this school for the next 58 years. He taught children not only how to read and write, but also arithmetic, history, Catholic doctrine, and even calligraphy.

“Maestro” Rafael Cordero devoted his entire life to the free education of children and young people. In 1868, sensing the end of his life was near, he called his students together, prayed with them and gave them his blessing. More than 2,000 people attended his funeral, and he became known as the “Father of Public Education in Puerto Rico.”

VENERABLE RAFAEL CORDERO Y MOLINA (1790-1868) — Nació en San Juan, Puerto Rico en 1790, hijo de pobres cultivadores de tabaco. Aunque no eran esclavos, no se les permitía ir a la escuela por ser negros. Con su escasa educación, sus padres enseñaron a Rafael a leer y desarrolló gran pasión por la literatura que lo llevó a decidirse a ser maestro.

A la muerte de sus padres se dedicó también al cultivo del tabaco. A los 20 años logró abrir una escuela en San Germán y nunca aceptó dinero o regalos por enseñar, sosteniéndose con el producto de su siembra. Estaría al frente de su escuela durante 58 años. Allí enseñó a los niños no solo a leer y escribir, sino también aritmética, historia, catecismo y hasta caligrafía.

El Maestro Rafael Cordero dedicó toda su vida a la educación de niños y jóvenes, gratis. En 1868, al sentir que llegaba el fin de su vida, reunió a sus alumnos, rezó con ellos y les dio la bendición. Más de 2,000 personas asistieron a su entierro y se le conoce como el Padre de la educación pública en Puerto Rico.

One who prays learns to say “thank you”. And so often we forget to say “thank you”. We are selfish.

One who prays learns to say “thank you” and to ask God to be benevolent to him or her. As much as we may strive, there is always an inexhaustible debt to

God which we can never pay back: he loves us infinitely more than we love him. And then, as much

as we try to live according to Christian Teaching, in our life there will always be something for which to

ask forgiveness. Let us think about days spent lazily, about moments in which rancour has filled our heart, and so on. These unfortunately not rare experiences are what make us implore: “Lord, Father, forgive us

our debts”. Thus we ask God for forgiveness.

El que reza aprende a decir “gracias”. Y nosotros muchas veces nos olvidamos de decir “gracias”, somos egoístas. El que reza aprende a decir “gracias” y le pide a Dios que sea benévolo con él o con ella. Por mucho que nos esforcemos, siempre hay una deuda inagotable con Dios, que nunca podremos pagar: Él nos ama infinitamente más de lo que nosotros lo amamos. Y luego, por mucho que nos comprometamos a vivir de acuerdo con las enseñanzas cristianas, en nuestras vidas siempre habrá algo por lo que pedir perdón: pensemos en los días pasados perezosamente, en los momentos en que el rencor ha ocupado nuestro corazón y así sucesivamente... Son experiencias desafortunadamente, no escasas, las que nos hace implorar: “Señor, Padre, perdona nuestras ofensas”.
