DEER SEASON LENGTH LENGTHENING THE DEER HUNTING SEASON IS A BAD IDEA. - Public Comment Period ends November 8, 2020. Currently NYS has a deer season from October 1 till December 22 and one of the longest gun seasons in the country. The NYSDEC has stated a longer season isn’t needed to control deer numbers but would be created for more sport hunting opportunity. The additional hunting season would be 7 days ending on January 1. The problem is this shuts out all the people that would otherwise enjoy all the other outdoor activities during the holiday season. On state land and private lands as typically residents wait for the end of deer season to open snowmobile trails, X country ski, snowshoe, small game hunting, walking dogs, horseback riding and other family activities. Many deer hunters feel that the existing deer season is far too long and object to more season time. Biologically in our Snowbelt region deer shouldn’t be stressed as they depend on their metabolism to slow down and conserve calories to be able to survive the winters. Many deer have lost their antlers, fawn bucks are far more difficult to distinguish from adults all leading to accidental and unwanted harvests. Snowmobiling, restaurants, forestry and other business will suffer economically from the lack of recreation.

Easy Slow Cooker Corn

You’ll never go back to the old way…

While we love corn on the cob and try to get as much of it as possible while it’s in season,

we hate boiling it (since it never seems to taste as good that way). What we didn’t know is that there’s another way to cook it that is easier and results in better flavor…in the slow cooker!

By placing the corn and water in the slow cooker, the corn steams deliciously without losing any of its sweet flavor. Then, you’re free to spruce it up with all the butter and salt and pepper you want and enjoy it to its fullest!

INGREDIENTS: Serves 8-10; 2 hours8-10 ears of corn1/3 cup water1 tablespoon lemon juiceunsalted butter, to tastekosher salt and freshly ground pepper, to tastefresh herbs or green onion, to tastePREPARATIONPlace corn in slow cooker and pour in 1/3 cup water.Cook on HIGH for 2 1/2-3 hours, or until corn is bright

yellow and tender.Use tongs to remove corn and season with salt and pepper,

and your choice of butter, lemon juice, and fresh herbs.Serve immediately and enjoy!Recipe adapted from Recipes That Crock

The Army’s Big, Dumb Guns Aren’t Dumb Anymore

(and Now They Can Shoot Down Planes)

Looks Like The Howitzer Learned A New Trick

BY KYLE MIZOKAMISEP 10, 2020A U.S. Army Paladin howitzer shot down a low-flying

cruise missile. The project is part of an effort to repurpose existing weapons

to do new things.U.S. Army guns, which were originally designed to rain

explosive shells on the enemy, can now engage low-flying aircraft, cruise missiles, and likely drones.

A U.S. Army howitzer successfully engaged a simulated cruise missile, shooting it down with a projectile traveling at Mach 5. The howitzer crew was assisted by a new U.S. Air Force battle management system. The test is the result of a Pentagon program designed to take existing weapon systems and modify them to take on new and important roles.

The intercept took place at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico. In a key test for the Air Force’s Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS), B-52 bombers launched six BQM-167 “Skeeter’ aerial targets. The “Skeeters” served as a stand-in for a salvo of low-flying cruise missiles.

SEPT. 28 - FIRST AIRPORT OPENED, 1909 - SEPT. 29 - THE U.S. ARMY OFFICIALLY ESTABLISHED BY CONGRESS, 1789 - OCT. 1 - HENRY FORD INTRODUCED THE MODEL T, 1908

Air Force sensors detected the “cruise missiles” and then provided targeting data to a F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter and MQ-9 Reaper drone equipped with AIM-9X Sidewinder air-to-air missiles, a ground launcher, a U.S. Navy 5-inch deck gun, and U.S. Army M109A7 Paladin self-propelled howitzer.

According to Air Force magazine, the Paladin fired a new hypersonic Mach 5 hypervelocity projectile and successfully intercepted the target. The Hyper Velocity Projectile, or HVP, is made by BAE Systems and uses technology developed for the U.S. Navy’s railgun program. The result is a howitzer round that flies faster and can be used to precision-target ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, ships at sea, and targets on the ground. BAE says a Paladin howitzer can fire the HVP to a range of up to 43 nautical miles, and fire six rounds per minute

The test was a win for the Pentagon’s Strategic Capabilities Office (SCO). Established in 2016, the SCO’s mission is to take existing military technology and modify it to assume an entirely new role. In this case, a self-propelled howitzer designed to rain high explosive artillery shells on targets more than a dozen miles away was equipped with a new projectile that can shoot down cruise missiles. Until recently, this was known as the Department of Defense’s Third Offset Strategy, meant to ensure the U.S. maintains a lead over a rising China without bankrupting itself in the process.

The test is a big win for the U.S. Army’s artillery branch. Now, in addition to providing fire support to tanks and artillery, the Army’s 155-millimeter howitzers can shoot down cruise missiles–so long as the Air Force’s flying sensors can provide targeting data. The test strongly suggests the new HVP round can intercept other aerial targets, including low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and perhaps even drones.

The successful use of a howitzer, of all things, to intercept a cruise missile shows the military can introduce new capabilities without designing entirely new weapon systems. Rather than develop an expensive new anti-cruise missile system, a program that almost certainly would cost billions of dollars, the Pentagon took literally the last weapon system you would think capable of shooting down a cruise missile and made it work.

NEW WOODSTOCK

FREE LIBRARY

APPOINTS NEW

DIRECTORThe New Woodstock Free

Library is pleased to announce the appointment of Heather Elia as the new Director of the Library. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Cornell University and, in December, Ms. Elia will receive a Masters degree in Library and Information Science from Syracuse University’s School of Information Studies. She is also a Wilhelm Library Leadership Award recipient.

Heather completed an internship at the Fayetteville Free Library and has also volunteered at the libraries in Smyrna, Hamilton and New Woodstock.

President of the Board Charles B. Shatzkin said “the Library has been an active focal point in the community for many years. The director’s primary goals are to create programs and services that will expand connections with our immediate community and enlarge our service reach. We were pleased to have an excellent pool of candidates applying for the position. Heather rose to the top with her strong leadership skills, her creativity, and a passion for all things library. The fact that she lives in New Woodstock is just a bonus for us.”

The Pacinian CorpusclePacinian corpuscles are mechanoreceptors found in the skin

of the fingers and other parts of the body. About .04 inches (1 mm) long and formed of concentric layers of connective tissue, the small oval bodies are responsible for sensitivity to pressure. In the center of each is a single nerve ending. These corpuscles are especially sensitive to vibrations, which they can sense even from short distances.

PrayerI like the story of the father

who was teaching his three-year-old daughter the Lord’s Prayer.

She would repeat the lines after him. Finally she decided to go solo.

He listened with pride as she carefully enunciated each word, right up to the end of the prayer. “Lead us not into temptation,” she prayed, “but deliver us from e-mail.

”These days that seems like an appropriate request. God calls us to pray about everything.

The terms prayer, supplication, and requests are similar but not identical.

Prayer is a general devotion; the word includes worship and adoration.

Supplication suggests humility. We are the supplicants in the sense that we make no demands; we simply offer humble requests.

A request is exactly that—a specific petition. We tell God exactly what we want. We pray the particulars of our problems. What Jesus said to the blind man, he says to us: “What do you want me to do for you?” (Luke 18:41 NIV). One would think the answer would be obvious. When a sightless man requests Jesus’ help, isn’t it apparent what he needs? Yet Jesus wanted to hear the man articulate his specific requests.

He wants the same from us. “Let your requests be made known to God.” When the wedding ran low on wine, Mary wasn’t content to say, “Help us, Jesus.” She was specific: “They have no more wine” (John 2:3 NIV). The needy man in Jesus’ parable requested, “Friend, lend me three loaves” (Luke 11:5 NIV). Not just “Give me something something to eat” or “Can you help me out?” He made a specific request. Even Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane prayed specifically, “Take this cup from me” (Luke 22:42 NIV).

Why does this matter? I can think of three reasons. A specific prayer is a serious

prayer. If I say to you, “Do you

mind if I come by your house sometime?” you may not take me seriously. But suppose I say, “Can I come over this Friday night? I have a problem at work, and I really need your advice. I can be there at seven, and I promise I will leave by eight.” Then you know

my petition is sincere. When we offer specific requests, God knows the same.

Specific prayer is an opportunity for us to see God at work. When we see him respond in specific ways to specific requests, our faith grows.

The book of Genesis relates the wonderful prayer of Abraham’s servant. He was sent to Mesopotamia, Abraham’s homeland, to find a wife for Abraham’s son.

How does a servant select a wife for someone else? This servant prayed about it. “O LORD, God of my master, Abraham,” he prayed. “Please

give me success today, and show unfailing love to my master, Abraham. See, I am standing here beside this spring, and the young women of the town are coming out to draw water. This is my request. I will ask one of them, ‘Please give me a drink from your jug.’ If she says, ‘Yes, have a drink, and I will water your camels, too!’—let her be the one you have selected as Isaac’s wife. This is how I will know that you have shown unfailing love to my master.” (Gen. 24:12–14 NLT)

Could the servant have been more detailed? He asked for success in his endeavor. He envisioned an exact dialogue, and then he stepped forth in faith. Scripture says, “Before he had finished speaking, Rebekah appeared” (v. 15 ISV). She said the words. The servant had an answered prayer. He saw God at work.

Specific prayer creates a lighter load. Many of our anxieties are threatening because they are ill defined and vague.

If we can distill the challenge into a phrase, we bring it down to size.

It is one thing to pray, Lord, please bless my meeting tomorrow.

It is another thing to pray, Lord, I have a conference with my supervisor at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. She intimidates me. Would you please grant me a spirit of peace so I can sleep well tonight? Grant me wisdom so I can enter the meeting prepared. And would you soften her heart toward me and give her a generous spirit? Help us have a gracious conversation in which both of us benefit and your name is honored.

There. You have reduced the problem into a prayer-sized challenge.

This is no endorsement of the demanding, conditional prayer that presumes to tell God what to do and when. Nor do I suggest that the power of prayer resides in chanting the right formula or quoting some secret code.

Do not think for a moment that the power of prayer resides in the way we present it. God is not manipulated or impressed by our formulas or eloquence.

But he is moved by the sincere request. After all, is he not our Father? As his children we honor him

when we tell him exactly what we need.

On my good days I begin my morning with a cup of coffee and a conversation with God.

I look ahead into the day and make my requests. I am meeting with so-and-so at 10:00 a.m. Would you give

me wisdom? This afternoon I need to finish my sermon. Would you please go ahead of me? Then if a sense of stress surfaces during the day, I remind myself, Oh, I gave this challenge to God earlier today.

He has already taken responsibility for the situation. I can be grateful, not fretful. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1

Peter 5:7 NIV). Casting is an intentional act to relocate an object. When the disciples prepared Jesus to ride into Jerusalem on

Palm Sunday, they “cast their garments upon the colt” (Luke 19:35 KJV). The crowd removed the garments off their backs and spread them in the path of Christ.

Let this “throwing” be your first response to bad news. As you sense anxiety welling up inside you, cast it in the

direction of Christ. Do so specifically and immediately. I did a good job of “casting my problems” in a high school

algebra class. My brain scans reveal a missing region marked by the sign “Intended for Algebra.” I can remember sitting in the class and staring at the textbook as if it were a novel written in Mandarin Chinese.

Fortunately I had a wonderful, patient teacher. He issued this invitation and stuck to it. “If you cannot solve a problem, come to me and I will help you.”

I wore a trail into the floor between his desk and mine.

Each time I had a question, I would approach his desk and remind him, “Remember how you promised you would help?” When he said yes, instant gratitude and relief kicked in. I still had the problem, mind you, but I had entrusted the problem to one who knew how to solve it.

Do the same. Take your problem to Christ and tell him, “You said you

would help me. Would you?” The Old Testament prophet Isaiah said, “Put the Lord in

remembrance [of His promises], keep not silence” (Isa. 62:6 AMPC). God told Isaiah, “Put Me in remembrance; let us contend together” (Isa. 43:26).

God invites you—yes, commands you—to remind him of his promises.

Populate your prayer with “You said…” “You said you would walk me through the waters” (Isa. 43:2, author’s paraphrase).

“You said you would lead me through the valley” (Ps. 23:4, author’s paraphrase).

“You said that you would never leave or forsake me” (Heb. 13:5, author’s paraphrase).

Find a promise that fits your problem, and build your prayer around it.

These prayers of faith touch the heart of God and activate the angels of heaven.

Miracles are set into motion. Your answer may not come overnight, but it will come. And

you will overcome. “Prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard

and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters” (Eph. 6:18 THE MESSAGE).

The path to peace is paved with prayer. Less consternation, more supplication. Fewer anxious thoughts, more prayer-filled thoughts. As you pray, the peace of God will guard your heart and mind. And, in the end, what could be better?Lucado, Max. Anxious for Nothing. Thomas Nelson. Kindle

Gut Microbiome Plays Important Role In Sleep

RegulationTransplanted Bacteria From

Sleep-apnea Mice Caused Sleep Changes In Recipient Mice

Date: September 23, 2020Source: University of Missouri-ColumbiaObstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic sleep condition

affecting more than one billion people worldwide. Evidence suggests OSA can alter the gut microbiome (GM) and may promote OSA-associated co-morbidities, including diabetes, hypertension and cognitive problems. Researchers from the University of Missouri School of Medicine and MU Health Care have discovered how OSA-related sleep disturbances affect the gut microbiome in mice and how transplanting those gut bacteria into other mice can cause changes to sleep patterns in the recipient mice.

David Gozal, MD, the Marie M. and Harry L. Smith Endowed Chair of Child Health at the MU School of Medicine, said the study shows the gut microbiome plays a major role in sleep regulation. This ultimately could translate into treatments that target the gut microbiome in humans with OSA.

“By manipulating the gut microbiome, or the byproducts of the gut microbiota, we would be in a position to prevent or at least palliate some of the consequences of sleep apnea,” said Gozal, the lead author of the study. “For example, if we combine continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) with customized probiotics that change the patient’s gut microbiome, we might be able to eliminate some of the tiredness and fatigue and reduce the likelihood of the comorbidities associated with OSA that affect cognition, memory, cardiovascular disease or metabolic dysfunction. If we can do any one of those things, then this is a major movement forward in the way we treat OSA.”

The study exposed male mice to either room air or intermittent hypoxia -- a condition in which the body doesn’t get enough oxygen -- designed to mimic OSA. After six weeks, researchers collected fecal material from all of the rodents. A third group of mice was divided up and given either a fecal transplant from the mice breathing room air or those exposed to intermittent hypoxia. The transplanted mice underwent sleep recordings for three consecutive days. Researchers found the mice who received transplants from the intermittent hypoxia group slept longer and slept more often during their normal period of wakefulness, suggesting increased sleepiness.

“This is the first study that evaluated sleep in naïve mice subjected to a fecal microbiome transplant from mice exposed to intermittent hypoxia,” Gozal said. “The fecal microbiome analysis showed profile differences between the mice transplanted from intermittent hypoxia donor mice versus those exposed to room air, indicating that the transplant altered the GM of the recipient mice.”

Emerging evidence suggests the GM can influence health and sleep quality through the brain-gut microbiome axis (BGMA). The next step is to study the mechanism involved in the relationship between the brain and the gut to determine how changes in the gut microbiome can affect sleep structure and, in turn, how OSA can contribute to co-morbidities.

Weighted Blankets Can Decrease Insomnia Severity

Randomized, Controlled Trial Finds That Weighted Blankets

Are Safe and EffectiveDate: September 23, 2020Source: American Academy of Sleep MedicineWeighted blankets are a safe and effective intervention in

the treatment of insomnia, according to Swedish researchers who found that insomnia patients with psychiatric disorders experienced reduced insomnia severity, improved sleep and less daytime sleepiness when sleeping with a weighted chain blanket.

Results of the randomized, controlled study show that participants using the weighted blanket for four weeks reported significantly reduced insomnia severity, better sleep maintenance, a higher daytime activity level, and reduced symptoms of fatigue, depression and anxiety. Participants in the weighted blanket group were almost 26 times more likely to experience a decrease of 50% or more in their insomnia severity compared with the control group, and they were nearly 20 times more likely to achieve remission of their insomnia. Positive

results were maintained during a 12-month, open follow-up phase of the study.

“A suggested explanation for the calming and sleep-promoting effect is the pressure that the chain blanket applies on different points on the body, stimulating the sensation of touch and the sense of muscles and joints, similar to acupressure and massage,” said principle investigator Dr. Mats Alder, consultant psychiatrist in the department of clinical neuroscience at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. “There is evidence suggesting that deep pressure stimulation increases parasympathetic arousal of the autonomic nervous system and at the same time reduces sympathetic arousal, which is considered to be the cause of the calming effect.”

The study is published in the Sept. 15 issue of the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

The study involved 120 adults (68% women, 32% men) previously diagnosed with clinical insomnia and a co-occurring psychiatric disorder: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or generalized anxiety disorder. They had a mean age of about 40 years.

Participants were randomized to sleep for four weeks at home with either a chain-weighted blanket or a control blanket. Participants assigned to the weighted blanket group tried an 8-kilogram (about 17.6 pounds) chain blanket at the clinic. Ten participants found it to be too heavy and received a 6-kilogram (about 13.2 pounds) blanket instead. Participants in the control group slept with a light plastic chain blanket of 1.5 kilograms (about 3.3 pounds). Change in insomnia severity, the primary outcome, was evaluated using the Insomnia Severity Index. Wrist actigraphy was used to estimate sleep and daytime activity levels.

Nearly 60% of weighted blanket users had a positive response with a decrease of 50% or more in their ISI score from the baseline to the four-week endpoint, compared with 5.4% of the control group. Remission, a score of seven or less on the ISI scale, was 42.2% in the weighted blanket group, compared with 3.6% in the control group.

After the initial four-week study, all participants had the option to use the weighted blanket for a 12-month follow-up phase. They tested four different weighted blankets: two chain blankets (6 kilograms and 8 kilograms) and two ball blankets (6.5 kilograms and 7 kilograms). After the test, and they were freely allowed to choose the blanket they preferred, with most selecting a heavier blanket. Only one participant

discontinued the study due to feelings of anxiety when using the blanket. Participants who switched from the control blanket to a weighted blanket experienced a similar effect as patients who used the weighted blanket initially. After 12 months, 92% of weighted blanket users were responders, and 78% were in remission.

“I was surprised by the large effect size on insomnia by the weighted blanket and pleased by the reduction of levels of both anxiety and depression,” said Adler.

In a related commentary, also published in the September issue of JCSM, Dr. William McCall writes that the study results support the psychoanalytic “holding environment” theory, which states that touch is a basic need that provides calming and comfort. McCall urges providers to consider the impact of sleeping surfaces and bedding on sleep quality, while calling for additional research into the effect of weighted blankets.

New Equation Unlocks 140-year-old Hall Effect Secret

11 Oct 2019 Isabelle DuméA new technique to extract information on the mobility of

electrons and holes in semiconductors has unlocked a long-held secret in the Hall effect 140 years after it was discovered. The carrier-resolved photo Hall (CRPH) measurement, as it has been dubbed, involves shining light with a known illumination intensity on a sample. The work could help in the development of next-generation semiconductor technology, such as improved solar cells and optoelectronics devices as well as new materials and devices for artificial intelligence (AI) hardware.

“Our discovery can be expressed in a succinct equation, Δμ = d(σ2H)/dσ, which gives us information on the difference in the mobility of holes and electrons in the Hall effect in semiconductors when illuminated with light,” explains study lead author Oki Gunawan of the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights in New York. “The finding is critical

because this ‘photo-Hall two-carrier transport’ has been a long-standing unsolved problem in solid-state physics until now.”

The classic Hall effect occurs when an electric current flows through a conductor in a magnetic field. If the current and magnetic field are at right angles to each other, the Lorentz force deflects the electrical charges (electrons or holes) to one side and a Hall voltage builds up in the direction that is at right angles to both the current and the magnetic field. This voltage is named after Edwin Hall, who discovered it back in 1879.

In the classical Hall measurement, researchers measure the longitudinal and transverse resistance of material (typically in the form of a Hall bar) to obtain the conductivity, σ, of the sample and its Hall coefficient, H, respectively. This measurement provides fundamental information on: the majority charge carriers in the material (electrons or holes depending on whether the material is n- or p-type); the speed under an applied electric field, or mobility, μ, of these charge carriers; and their density (n). Unfortunately, the standard Hall measurement only provides information on majority charge carriers.

New technique provides more informationGunawan and colleagues’ new technique provides

information on the mobility of both types of charge carrier, as well as photocarrier density, carrier recombination lifetime (the process by which electrons and holes annihilate with traps or each other) and the diffusion length for electrons, holes and ambipolar carrier types.

“In our work, we repeat the measurements of conductivity and Hall coefficient as a function of the intensity of light we shine on the sample,” explains Gunawan. “When light is shone on a semiconductor, both electron and hole pairs are generated and the σ-H curve we obtain provides new information on the mobility difference between the holes and electrons, Δμ, thanks to the Δμ = d(σ2H)/dσ equation.

Gunawan says he discovered the equation thanks to a gedanken or thought experiment in which he imagined two otherwise identical p-type materials with one of the materials having a minority charge carrier mobility that is twice as fast as the other.

σ-H curve contains minority carrier information

“In the dark, both materials have the same σ-H point and you can’t tell the difference between them, since of course, there are no minority carriers in the dark,” explains Gunawan. “With increasing light intensity, however, the σ-H curves of both materials diverge and the trajectory of the σ-H curve (and its slope) then contains minority carrier information, according to Δμ = d(σ2H)/dσ.”

With this discovery we have a new technology to extract even more precious information from semiconductors, he tells Physics World. “We can now use the three most common excitation sources in physics: electric- and magnetic fields – which were already used before – and now light to provide us with a more complete understanding of these materials.

“Just as the classical Hall effect is widely employed in physics and semiconductor labs around the world, so our technique could also be widely applied to help advance R&D efforts on electronic materials,” he adds.

Hall and CRPHThe Hall effect and the

Carrier-resolved photo-Hall effect. Courtesy: O Gunawan/IBM

“The technique might even be a new chapter in electronics materials research. Before

now, we had to make use of various separate tools – such as time-resolved photoluminescence and terahertz spectroscopy – to obtain some of the seven parameters mentioned above. And we could only obtain partial information, with the results often being complicated to analyse because these techniques do not use steady-state light illumination.

“With our new CRPH technique, we can obtain all seven parameters as a function of light intensity in a single experimental sitting and on a single sample.”

Rotating parallel dipole line Hall systemThe core technology in this work is based on recently

developed rotating parallel dipole line (PDL) magnets that serve as a highly sensitive AC field Hall system. “This system is very critical for high-sensitivity photo-Hall measurements on low mobility polycrystalline materials, for example,” explains Gunawan. “The system also has an emerging application (and is the subject of ongoing research at IBM) for developing AI hardware devices in which the key materials are no longer silicon.”

The team, which also includes researchers from KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), KRICT (Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology) and Duke University, says it now wants to apply its technique to a broader variety of materials, i nc lud ing emerg ing photovoltaics and materials for AI hardware devices.

“We also want to find out more, for example, on what happens if the mobility of the charge carriers in a material is not constant, as we initially assume. There could also be many more non-ideal cases that we could investigate.

“Another equally important topic is to understand the limitations of CRPH. Indeed, it may not work in metallic materials, which require extremely strong laser illumination that could melt them. There could also be other limitations that we need to identify.”

Full details of the research are reported in Nature 10.1038/s41586-019-1632-2.

Time To Change: Virus-hit US Urges People To Spend CoinsAFP • July 29, 2020Washington (AFP) - The flow of coins through the US

economy is the latest victim of the coronavirus pandemic and now the government is asking people to spare a little change to balance out the supply.

Virus restrictions have meant stores doing less business and thus fewer coins are being spent, bunching up the normal flow of quarters, dimes and nickels.

“The problem is the circulation kind of stopped because stores were closed, banks were closed,” Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell told journalists on Wednesday.

As a result the government has asked people to start parting with their change either by spending it or cashing it in at banks.

It noted that the lopsided flow is a problem because not everyone pays with bank cards or other touch-less options that have surged as people tried to keep their hands clean during the outbreak.

“For millions of Americans, cash is the only form of payment and cash transactions rely on coins to make change,” the United States Mint coin-maker said last week.

The Mint said it is track to make 1.6 billion coins a month until the end of the year, a boost over its average production of one billion per month.

“The coin supply problem can be solved with each of us doing our part,” it added.

Powell also said the government has created a “coin task force” to tackle the problem.

Licensed, Insured, EPA CertifiedLicensed, Insured, EPA CertifiedOlder People Have Become Younger: Study Finds

Functional Ability Of Seniors Has Improved

September 22, 2020A study conducted at the Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences

at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, found that the functional ability of older people is nowadays better when it is compared to that of people at the same age three decades ago.

The study compared the physical and cognitive performance of people between the ages of 75 and 80 with that of the same-aged people in the 1990s.

Among men and women between the ages of 75 and 80, muscle strength, walking speed, reaction speed, verbal fluency, reasoning and working memory are significantly better than they were in people at the same age born earlier.

“Higher physical activity and increased body size explained the better walking speed and muscle strength among the later-born cohort,” says doctoral student Kaisa Koivunen, “whereas the most important underlying factor behind the cohort differences in cognitive performance was longer education.”

“The cohort of 75- and 80-year-olds born later has grown up and lived in a different world than did their counterparts born three decades ago,” added researcher Matti Munukka. “There have been many favourable changes. These include better nutrition and hygiene, improvements in health care and the school system, better accessibility to education and improved working life.”

The results suggest that increased life expectancy is accompanied by an increased number of years lived with good functional ability in later life.

The observation can be explained by slower rate-of-change with increasing age, a higher lifetime maximum in physical performance, or a combination of the two.

North Dakota Farmers Finish Neighbor’s Harvest After Heart Attack

September 16, 2020Dozens of farmers in Divide County, N.D. put their own

harvesting on hold to cut 1,000 acres for a farmer who suffered a heart attack after his combine caught fire last week.

Lane Unhjem was in the middle of harvesting when he went into cardiac arrest. He was flown to Minot where he is in stable condition.

When word spread of Unhjem’s situation last week, local farmers immediately started coordinating an effort to help him out.

Around 60 farmers brought 11 combines, six grain carts, and 15 semis to get Unhjem’s Durum Wheat and Canola in the bin.

“I talked to a couple of farmers, got their equipment, and then other people just started calling and we had equipment offered from all over the place in the county, and their workers

to go with it,” Jenna Binde told KFYR.

Those who assisted say letting the Unhjems’ crops go unharvested would’ve been a big loss for the family, and helping out was just common sense.

“Everybody knows the Unhjems, and they’re good people and good in the community, and just kind of the farming way of life too. You help your neighbor out when they need it and don’t expect anything in return,” added Binde.

It took only seven hours for the farmers to harvest the Unhjems’ 1,000 acres of crops over the weekend.

Unhjem’s family says he is doing okay but has a long road of recovery ahead.

12-Year-Old Boy Cured Of Sickle Cell Disease After

Stem Cell TransplantSeptember 14, 2020A 12-year-old boy in Indianapolis has been cured of sickle

cell disease, thanks to a bone marrow donor.Elliot was born with sickle cell disease, an inherited blood

disease which leads to blockages that prevent blood from reaching parts of the body.

“Because of sickle cell, Elliot was always a kid who struggled with energy level and stamina and he got dehydrated very easily,” his mom Tremesha said.

“When I was younger, I played sports a lot, but then I got too cold from my sickle cell. That’s why I started quitting all my sports. My baseball and soccer,” Elliot said.

One year ago, Elliot received a stem cell transplant at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health.

Now, doctors say he is completely free of the disease. He said he can’t wait to get back to playing the sports he once loved.

Kroger Manager Hires Homeless Woman Who Was Sleeping In

The Store’s Parking LotSeptember 6, 2020A manager at a Kroger grocery store in Nashville hired a

woman who had been sleeping in its parking lot for a year.LaShenda Williams told USA Today that she had been

battling drug addition and had been spending the nights in her car at a Nashville Kroger after driving around different locations during the day.

“I would lean my seat all the way back so no one would see me because, you know, I knew I wasn’t supposed to be there,” Williams told Today.

At the end of last year, Jackie Vandal, a hiring manager at Kroger, noticed Williams and encouraged her to attend an upcoming job fair. With some help from Vandal, Williams spent a few hours filling out the application. Once Vandal saw the message indicating she had successfully applied, Vandal hired her on the spot.

“I’ve been here, actually this month, the 10th will be 10 months. You know it’s a great day!” exclaimed Williams.

Williams’ happiness overflows. Her smile, from ear to ear.“I love it, I get excited every day to come in. I can’t wait

to see the workers who I work with. I can’t wait to see the customers,” said Williams.

Her positive attitude has been a blessing to the staff, too.“She’s a fantastic worker, I wish I had 120 of her,” said

Vandal told WKRN.“We are so lucky to have Lashenda as part of our Kroger

family. Her uplifting spirit is contagious. She has made such a positive impact on her fellow team members, and so many customers as well,” Melissa Eads, a corporate affairs manager for Kroger told Today.

Williams says it is easy to be enthusiastic after everything that has happened.

“I was sleeping in a parking lot and looking for something to eat. Now, all my babies here love on me. No one abuses me, and no one calls me dumb and stupid. For the first time in my life, I finally got peace,” Williams told USA Today.

the ability of a straw-stuffed man, a girl, a grasshopper and a frozen-hearted Princess to do it. As for himself, he had never thought of defying the King before.

That was why the gardener’s boy was not very bold when he entered the castle and passed through to the enclosed court where the King was just then seated with his favorite courtiers around him. None prevented Pon’s entrance, because he was known to be the gardener’s boy, but when the King saw him, he began to frown fiercely. He considered Pon to be to blame for all his trouble with Princess Gloria, who since her heart had been frozen had escaped to some unknown place instead of returning to the castle to wed Googly-Goo as she had been expected to do. So the King bared his teeth angrily as he demanded, “What have you done with Princess Gloria?”

“Nothing, your Majesty! I have done nothing at all,” answered Pon in a faltering voice. “She does not love me any more and even refuses to speak to me.”

“Then why are you here, you rascal?” roared the King.Pon looked first one way and then another, but saw no means

of escape, so he plucked up courage. “I am here to summon your Majesty to surrender.”

“What!” shouted the King. “Surrender? Surrender to whom?”Pon’s heart sank to his boots. “To the Scarecrow,” he replied. Some of the courtiers began to titter, but King Krewl was

greatly annoyed. He sprang up and began to beat poor Pon with the golden staff he carried. Pon howled lustily and would have run away had not two of the soldiers held him until his Majesty was exhausted with punishing the boy. They they let him go, and he left the castle and returned along the road, sobbing at every step because his body was so sore and aching.

“Well,” said the Scarecrow, “did the King surrender?” “No, but he gave me a good drubbing!” sobbed poor Pon.Trot was very sorry for Pon, but Gloria did not seem affected

in any way by her lover’s anguish. The grasshopper leaped to the Scarecrow’s shoulder and asked him what he was going to do next.

“Conquer,” was the reply. “But I will go alone this time, for beatings cannot hurt me at all, nor can lance thrusts or sword cuts or arrow pricks.”

“Why is that?” inquired Trot.“Because I have no nerves such as you meat people possess.

Even grasshoppers have nerves, but straw doesn’t, so whatever they do--except one thing--they cannot injure me.

“No, of course not,” said the Scarecrow. “Therefore it will be our duty to MAKE him give up the throne.”

“How?” asked Trot.“Give me time to think,” was the reply. “That’s what my

brains are for. I don’t know whether you people ever think or not, but my brains are the best that the Wizard of Oz ever turned out, and if I give them plenty of time to work, the result usually surprises me.”

“Take your time, then,” suggested Trot. “There’s no hurry.”“Thank you,” said the straw man, and sat perfectly still for

half an hour. During this interval, the grasshopper whispered in Trot’s ear, to which he was very close, and Trot whispered back to the grasshopper sitting upon her shoulder. Pon cast loving glances at Gloria, who paid not the slightest heed to them. Finally the Scarecrow laughed aloud.

“Brains working?” inquired Trot.“Yes, they seem in fine order today. We will conquer King

Krewl and put Gloria upon his throne as Queen of Jinxland.”“Fine!” cried the little girl, clapping her hands together

gleefully. “But how?”“Leave the HOW to me,” said the Scarecrow proudly. “As

a conqueror I’m a wonder. We will first of all write a message to send to King Krewl, asking him to surrender. If he refuses, then we will make him surrender.”

“Why ask him when we KNOW he’ll refuse?” inquired Pon.“Why, we must be polite, whatever we do,” explained the

Scarecrow. “It would be very rude to conquer a King without proper notice.”

They found it difficult to write a message without paper, pen and ink, none of which was at hand, so it was decided to send Pon as a messenger with instructions to ask the King, politely but firmly, to surrender. Pon was not anxious to be the messenger. Indeed, he hinted that it might prove a dangerous mission. But the Scarecrow was the acknowledged head of the Army of Conquest, and he would listen to no refusal. So off Pon started for the King’s castle, and the others accompanied him as far as his hut, where they had decided to await the gardener’s boy’s return.

I think it was because Pon had known the Scarecrow such a short time that he lacked confidence in the straw man’s wisdom. It was easy to say, “We will conquer King Krewl,” but when Pon drew near to the great castle, he began to doubt

THE SCARE CROW of OZBy L. Frank Baum

“Never mind,” urged the Scarecrow in a comforting voice, “such a transformation doesn’t last always, and as a general thing there’s some way to break the enchantment. I’m sure Glinda could do it in a jiffy.”

“Who is Glinda?” inquired Cap’n Bill. Then the Scarecrow told them all about Glinda, not forgetting

to mention her beauty and goodness and her wonderful powers of magic. He also explained how the Royal Sorceress had sent him to Jinxland especially to help the strangers, whom she knew to be in danger because of the wiles of the cruel King and the Wicked Witch.

CHAPTER 16 PON SUMMONS THE KING TO

SURRENDER

Gloria had drawn near to the group to listen to their talk, and it seemed to interest her in spite of her frigid manner. They knew, of course, that the poor Princess could not help being cold and reserved, so they tried not to blame her. “I ought to have come here a little sooner,” said the Scarecrow regretfully, “but Glinda sent me as soon as she discovered you were here and were likely to get into trouble. And now that we are all together--except Button-Bright, over whom it is useless to worry--I propose we hold a council of war to decide what is best to be done.”

That seemed a wise thing to do, so they all sat down upon the grass, including Gloria, and the grasshopper perched upon Trot’s shoulder and allowed her to stroke him gently with her hand. “In the first place,” began the Scarecrow, “this King Krewl is a usurper who has no right to rule this Kingdom of Jinxland.”

“That is true,” said Pon eagerly. “My father was King before him, and I--”

“You are a gardener’s boy,” interrupted the Scarecrow. “Your father had no right to rule, either, for the rightful King of this land was the father of Princess Gloria, and only she is entitled to sit upon the throne of Jinxland.”

“Good!” exclaimed Trot. “But what’ll we do with King Krewl? I s’pose he won’t give up the throne unless he has to.”
