Asian Festival 2016
Asian culture once again came to Ridgewood
High School this week as students put on the
annual Asian Festival. A day of performances,
the RHS Asian Festival is planned, organized,
and performed by students along with the help
of parents and faculty advisor Medha Kirtane.
This year the festival represented acts from five
distinct Asian countries, Korea, India, the Phil-
ippines, China, and Japan. Audience members
were treated to a wide variety of dancing, mar-
tial arts demonstrations, and other displays of
the many beautiful and varied Asian cultures.
Performances took place on March 4, during
the school day, and were followed by the annu-
al Asian Festival Benefit that took place on the
night of March 5. Proceeds from this year’s
benefit went to Doctors Without Borders.

A Window Into Asian Festival Shaking Up the College Admissions Process
A landmark report released today by Common Sense Media finds
that teenagers (ages 13-18) use an average of nine hours of en-
tertainment media per day and that tweens (ages 8-12) use an
average of six hours a day, not including time spent using media
for school or homework.
Despite the significant amount of time teens and tweens spend
with media, not all young people use media in the same way.
The study, Common Sense Census: Media Use by Tweens and
Teens, found that race, class and gender all play a role in how
kids are likely to consume media…

QUOTE TO REMEMBER...
“This nation was founded on one principle above all else: The require-
ment that we stand up for what we believe. No matter the odds or the
consequences.” -Steven Rogers
Students demonstrate a traditional Indian dance
during this year’s Asian Festival.
Thirty students from Ridgewood High School travelled to each of the
village’s elementary schools and assisted in educating the younger
students about band and music. They demonstrated instruments to
assist the elementary students in selecting their own first instrument.
Students demonstrate a traditional dance from the
Philippines using long bamboo poles that are hit
against the ground as dancers dance between them
in rhythm with the music.
Student leaders including, country leaders and per-
formance organizers thank the gathered crowd
after the Asian Festival Fashion Show during the
school day on March 4.
