Sample vs. Total Enumeration

• Why sample?– Can not afford to collect ground data everywhere.

– Do not have the time to collect ground data everywhere.

• Good to compare to a total enumeration, but remember that these total enumerations are subject to error themselves.

• So, sample must be large enough to be valid and statistically sound without bias.

Stratification

• Use AEZs to divide continents into reasonable mapping areas.

• We sample in proportion to the size of each strata (crop vs. no crop) within each AEZ– Where do we get these proportions?

– Any estimate we choose is subject to some error.

– Some AEZs have near equal areas of crop and NC. Others are less equally distributed.

– If sample in proportion to strata size, some AEZ will have very few crop samples. If small crop area, map will tend to have more error mapping crop.

Summary of Results

• 250 samples generated for original AEZs could not be used for new

mapping zones because of insufficient sample size in some of the new

zones

• Therefore, only cropland.org samples were used with a sample size of

250 for each region

• Zone 1 had unexpected result and was further analyzed - still had same

result with another set of samples

• Zone 7 had 190 samples only. Therefore, supplemented by 60 more

samples

• Zone 7 had fewer crop samples than expected. Was further analyzed

with repeated samples. In all cases, producer’s and user’s accuracies

were low.
