"NOT HIRED, BUT CHOSEN"

When a company recruits to management the process is detailed and thorough. No company wants less than the best. Contrast this with today's Gospel. Jesus asks his disciples who they say he is. Peter exclaims, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16).

Peter is a good Jews, but an illiterate fisherman, not exactly high on the social ladder. Nevertheless, Jesus saw what this man could become. "You are Peter, and upon this rock (in Greek, Petros) I will build my Church" (Matthew 16: 18.

The future of our Church, now 1.5 billion people worldwide, lay in Peter's hands. With the power of God, Jesus promised that ultimate evil would never defeat it. Nevertheless, the Church is made up of flawed human beings who sometimes fail. Even Peter himself, Jesus 'chosen "rock," failed spectacularly by denying Christ three tomes.

Let's not walk away from failure but strive more to live a faithful Christian life.

La reapertura de la Santa Misa

Se anunció que la Ciudad de Nueva York, ha reabierto desde el lunes 22 de junio, permitiendo la Fase II. -Nuestra oficina parroquial está abierta en su horario regular y misa entre semana, de martes a viernes al mediodía, los bautizos, bodas y funerales se han reanudado al 25% de la capacidad de la iglesia. Por favor, llamar a la rectoría para coordinan sus bautizos, bodas y funerales. Se deben tomar todas las precauciones (usar máscaras, mantener una distancia de seis pies, sin contacto físico, lavarse las manos con frecuencia y desinfectar las superficies). * Continuaremos proporcionando actualizaciones de la Arquidiócesis.

"NO CONTRATADOS, SINO ESCOGIDOS"

Cuando una empresa contrata para un puesto alto en su administración el proceso es detallado y riguroso. Toda empresa quiere contratar lo mejor. Pon esto en contraste con el Evangelio de hoy. Jesús le pregunta a los discípulos quien dicen ellos que es el. Pedro exclama: "Tu eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo" (Mateo 16:16). Pedro es un buen judío, pero es también un pescador analfabeta; no my distinguido en las esferas sociales. No obstante, Jesús vio lo que este hombre podía llegar a ser. "Tú eres Pedro y sobre esta piedra (petro en griego) edificare mi Iglesia" (Mateo 16: 18) El futuro de nuestra Iglesia, actualmente con 1.5 billones de personas en todo el mundo, empezó en las manos de Pedro. Con el poder de Dios, Jesús prometió que el mal nunca vencería a su Iglesia. Con todo y eso, la Iglesia está compuesta de seres humanos imperfectos que a veces fallan. Aun el mismo Pedro, escogido por Jesús como "la rosa", fallo espectacularmente cuando negó a su Maestro tres veces. No nos alejemos de Dios cuando fallemos, sino esforcémonos aun mas para vivir fielmente nuestra vida cristiana.

RREEFFLLEEXXIIOONNEEMMOOSS SSOOBBRREE LLAA PPAALLAABBRRAA DDEE DDIIOOSS Será padre de los habitantes de Jerusalén. (Isaías 22:21) Maestro del palacio: era un título codiciado y Shebna lo sabía. Ese título le dio una autoridad de gran alcance sobre la casa y las posesiones del rey. Pero abusó de ese poder aprovechándose de ventajas como los carros reales e incluso haciendo una hermosa tumba tallada para sí mismo (Isaías 22:16, 18). Por eso Dios derrocó a Shebna y estableció a Eliakim en su lugar. Quería a alguien que ejerciera esa autoridad con preocupación paternal y compasión, no autopromoción, dominación o codicia. En otras palabras, el amo del palacio debe imitar la forma en que Dios usa su autoridad: para servir a su pueblo. Estas palabras apuntan a algo importante acerca de los deseos de Dios para su reino. Quiere un reino donde los líderes no dominen su autoridad sobre las personas a su cargo. Quiere que muestren compasión y preocupación por su gente (Mateo 20: 25-26). Jesús le dio ese tipo de autoridad a Pedro. Sí, Pedro recibió las “llaves del reino” y el poder de atar y desatar (Mateo 16:19). Pero ante todo, él iba a ser la roca, el fundamento sólido sobre el que se edificaría la Iglesia. No se elevaría por encima de todos sus hermanos y hermanas; estaría debajo de ellos para apoyarlos. Ese es el tipo de liderazgo que Dios quiere que ejerzan los padres o cualquier persona con autoridad. Los líderes piadosos no se ponen a sí mismos en primer lugar. No codician el honor ni el poder. Su reino es un lugar donde, en lugar de enfrentarse entre sí, su pueblo se sirve con amor, respeto y honor. La historia de Shebna es una lección para nosotros, especialmente en aquellos momentos en los que nos sentimos tentados a aprovechar nuestra posición. Peter también es un modelo a seguir cuando nos sentimos tentados a pensar que el liderazgo equivale a la tiranía. Reflecting on God’s Word He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. (Isaiah 22:21)

Master of the palace: it was a sought-after title, and Shebna knew it. That title gave him far-reaching authority over the king’s household and possessions. But he abused that power by taking advantage of perks like the royal chariots and even making a beautiful carved tomb for himself (Isaiah 22:16, 18). That’s why God unseated Shebna and established Eliakim in his place. He wanted someone who would exercise that authority with fatherly concern and compassion, not self-promotion, domination, or greed. In other words, the master of the palace should imitate the way God uses his authority: to serve his people.

These words point to something important about God’s desires for his kingdom. He wants a kingdom where leaders don’t lord their authority over the people in their care. He wants them to show compassion and concern for their people (Matthew 20:25-26).

Jesus gave that type of authority to Peter. Yes, Peter received the “keys to the kingdom” and the power to bind and to lose (Matthew 16:19). But first and foremost, he was to be the rock, the solid foundation upon which the Church would be built. He would not be raised up above all his brothers and sisters; he would be beneath them to support them. That's the type of leadership God wants parents or anyone in authority to exercise. Godly leaders don’t put themselves first. They are not greedy for honor or power. His kingdom is a place where, instead of setting themselves up against one another, his people serve one another with love, respect, and honor.

Shebna’s story is a lesson to us, especially those times when we are tempted to take advantage of our position. Peter is a role model too when we are tempted to think leadership equates to tyranny. Let’s take their examples and learn how to be good leaders in our families, our workplaces, and our Church. From The Word among Us- Aug- 2020
