PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

The world keeps changing and so does life at Timboon. I thank parents for their understanding about changes that are happening daily and weekly. There are many things outside our control at the moment. We continue to have extra cleaning, hand sanitiser available in all classrooms and open areas and if there is any student who wishes to wear a mask, they are able to do so. We have disposable masks available if needed. I remind parents that if your son/daughter is feeling sick that for the safety of us all please keep them home and if necessary, please undertake testing for Covid-19. We have been unable to have our Year 6 to Year 7 Information night and VCE subject selection nights due to the need to social distance. We will hold some information sessions when we can however these may look a little different. In light of this it is extremely important that parents are reading notes on Compass and any other information that comes home. If you do have questions, please contact the school and we will do our best to help over the phone. Every four years the school has a review of its performance. This year we have our school review in Term 4. This review is a considerable amount of work for a number of staff. Part of the review is involving parent perspectives and feedback. There is a survey on Compass for parents to complete which will help us in the review. On 14th August we have a Pupil Free day to prepare for the review. Now in the cold of winter can I remind parents and students that the school uniform is being strictly enforced and that students mainly in the Secondary School are not permitted to wear alternative jumpers or extra items. There are jackets available that meet the uniform approved by school council. Also, in the Secondary School students are able to wear the PE /Sport uniform all day on the days that they have these subjects. There is no need to get changed. This week students and parents in Years 9,10 and 11 have been involved in selecting subjects for 2021. Planning has begun for 2021 and we will have confirmed subjects to students as soon as possible. At the front entrance of the school are now set places for parents and visitors to park. I ask that parents do not drive around the loop and please park in the set areas. This is done to ensure the safety of all the children at the school. DAVIN REID PRINCIPAL Front cover photo: Christine Flecken

ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS’ REPORTS

Dear Students and Parents

I hope this newsletter item finds you safe and well. The last two weeks have been busy here at school with Year 9, 10 and 11 students beginning their pathway interviews and subject selections for 2021. Whilst these are significant decisions for students to make, it has been very rewarding to have discussions with students about their future and how we as a school can contribute to this. We are working towards students in Year 11 and 12 in 2021 having clarity on their selections by the end of Term 3.

We welcomed two new students into our school in the last two weeks. Welcome to Stacy McDowall and Alysa Hibburt both starting in Year 10. It is fantastic to have new people coming to the school and contributing to a positive school culture. I hope your time with us is rewarding. We have very healthy student numbers in the Secondary School and we continue to grow and flourish.

At assembly this week I spoke about the need for students to do the 1%ers, particularly in being organised and prepared. It is not ok for students to seek extensions for work the day an assessment is due unless the circumstances are very extraordinary. The expectation is that students, if they need help with school work, seek it early. One small tip is to use the planner attached to outline when all assessments are due and work backwards from there, planning which tasks to do and when. The lesson here for students is that Prior Preparation and Planning Prevents Poor Performance.

During Term 2 our VET music students performed online for the Corangamite Shire ‘Live in Lockdown’ concert. It was a fantastic experience for our students and thank you to Mr Deppeler for supporting the program. This sort of performance is central to the students studying Cert III in Music (Performance). Jade Van Es, Willow Smith, Ebony Bouwman and Amy Stewart, Iagan McKenzie, Blake Oberin and Faith Younger all performed – well done!

Below is a report from Mrs Frazer on the Plant Science Competition which our students recently competed in.

The Year 7/8 Plant Science elective in semester one was based on the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hermitage Research Facility, Schools Plant Science Competition. This is an Australia wide competition. Prior to remote learning we were able to complete the practical part of the science experiment, have in guest speakers and experience an excursion to view healthy crops. However this meant that most of the written work had to be completed during remote learning.

All students had to write up a formal science report, supported by research, about the experiment (the effect of salinity on plant health) and construct a mind map to demonstrate their learning about all the factors that contribute to crop and plant health. Seven students’ work was sent in to compete as individual entries and on behalf of the class. These students were Zane Vogels, Zara Watt, Colby Berry, Jackson Duro, Jack Hough, Olivia McKenna and Robbie Morden.

The results were announced this week. Olivia and Robbie were awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the individual results and the whole class was awarded the Encouragement Prize in the Year 7-9 section (just missing 3rd prize by 1 point!).

Very exciting and well done to the whole class!

Lastly, we have witnessed already the levels of engagement and connection to school rise for students involved in the Step Up program with Mr Bell. Students have been working on maintenance around the school and already they have made a positive difference to how the school looks. Well done to the students involved in this program so far and keep up your commitment to it.

Coming Up:

· Thursday 6th August – Parent Teacher interview bookings open.

· Thursday 13th August – Parent Teacher Interviews from 12 – 7pm.

Kind Regards DAN WALKER 7 -12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Congratulations Last Friday, we resumed the awarding of our yard appreciation tickets. Tickets are given to students who display a high level of any of our three values in the yard. The winners were Charlotte Meinhold and Savannah Beames; both showed great respect and empathy for our school and their peers by helping others in need.

Yard buzzing With the sun still making an appearance most break times, the yard is buzzing with skipping, garden creations, sand-pit play and large games of chasey. We are very fortunate to have the great

spaces we have in our school and the students are making the most of it. The link to the Jump Rope for Heart for parents is https://www.jumprope.org.au/parents . We encourage you to log on and help raise funds for the Heart Foundation.

Transition The transition events have begun, with our Year 6s taking a short tour of the Senior School, followed by a brief talk with Mr Mottram on Tuesday. Elective sheets and a handbook were handed out on the day and are required back to their current classroom teacher by Monday 10th August. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Nigel Mottram at the Senior School.

In terms of kinder to school transition, we are being impacted by the limitations of Covid-19 restrictions, however planning continues to go ahead with a parent information session on Monday 17th August (this maybe via WebEx if parents are not

allowed on site). If you know of any families new to the area or anyone wanting further information about our school, please ask them to ring either Dan Walker (Secondary Assistant Principal) or myself. What’s happening in classes? The Preps have been enjoying the Pamela Allen books and looking at making connections.

The Year 1-2s have settled well into their spelling groups, with the addition of an extension writing group with Mrs Mackieson. The Year 3-4s are into the swing of TAP activities this term, with cheese and milk tasting this week. Thanks to Andrea Vallance, our TAP coordinator, for organising such wonderful events.

The Year 5-6s are working on their skipping tricks, ensuring they are not to be outdone by the very clever and fit Year 1-2s. In class, they are continuing to prepare for their Term 4 Sovereign Hill camp, learning about life as it was in the convict era and during early European settlement. They will now focus on the gold rush era. Mrs Green has been in over the last fortnight and we thank her for her wonderful expertise. This term, we have extension maths groups running across both Year 3-4 and Year 5-6. The group is selected from their Essential Assessment results each fortnight, so may change from topic to topic. I am fortunate to be teaching such talented students twice a week to extend their skills and knowledge. Calendar Dates: Thursday 13th August – 12 noon-7pm Parent Teacher Interviews (no P-12 classes on this day) Friday 14th August – Pupil free day to allow staff to work on the School Review. Camembert Culture Under the watchful eye of master cheesemaker, Mr Mottram, our Year 8 Science students have launched into Term 3 studying the science of cheese making, chemistry, food science and scientific processes as they culture their own Camembert cheese. Students learnt about the various types of cultures required to make cheese, the time and precision it takes, the types of milk used and the importance of hygiene. The unit gave students the opportunity to be involved in a real-life, hands-on science project. Milk provided by Schulz Organic Dairy was used for two big cheese making days and students have produced cheeses that have been hooped, brined and turned. This Camembert cheese making unit become a rite of passage for Timboon Year 8 Science students and they produced 65 great looking cheese wheels. Can’t wait until they mature!

Political perspective Despite the current Covid-19 restrictions, our Year 12 Legal Studies class was fortunate enough to be a part of a Webex session with Richard Riordan the Liberal Party member for our electorate, Polwarth. The Year 12 students are currently investigating the roles of the Crown and the Houses of Parliament (Victorian and Commonwealth) in law-making and Richard described his background and his path into politics. Richard was always interested in this field and indicated that his unsuccessful attempt to enter politics at 24 was beneficial because it gave him the opportunity to experience life, be involved with footy clubs and schools, raise a family, learn how people think, governments work and how to work with people with diverse opinions. He described his role as working for the people of the electorate and airing their concerns in Parliament about things like local planning issues and homelessness amongst the elderly whilst working with the Opposition and Government. Richard explained that leading the community’s response to the recent Covid-19 outbreak in Colac was intense with case numbers going from 0-60 in just 11 days and clarified that an equivalent metropolitan number would have been 25,000 cases. Richard was candid on many areas and we were very grateful for his input at this time.

To all of our Junior basketball players: throughout this coronavirus crisis we hoped to have a return date for Junior Basketball in early August, however our committee have met and made the decision to continue to put the junior seasons on hold for now. We hope to be able to run a season later this year however at this time with all of the rules and restrictions around COVID-19, we feel it is in our players, our players families and our volunteers best interest and health and safety to postpone starting the winter season for now.

For those who have paid fees already there is more information on our Timboon Basketball Facebook page Alternatively you can email us at [email protected] or call one of us for more information.
