Continued from page 1Marlborough 4 Fun chief ex-

ecutive Katrina Lange says the company they are working with is Night Owls, operated by Peter Owls who has worked with the organisation and the Picton Mari-time Festival in the past.

Peter will launch the fireworks in Picton from a barge that will be further out from the foreshore, and in Blenheim from the Taylor River bank.

“This allows us to have bigger

displays and to go higher, so people will still see them from the centre of town.

He’s very experienced and has always done a great job for us so I am really looking forward to see-ing what he delivers,” Katrina says.

Ignite Blenheim will kick off at 8pm at the Liz Davidson Square with bands Rockova followed by Watt 4.

Ignite Picton will have plenty of early evening entertainment for families with inflatables, face

painting, stalls and Mr Whippy between 7pm and 9pm.

Bands Onestep and A Minor Thing will perform from 7pm as well as the Diamond Divas who will MC the event and entertain the crowds throughout the even-ing.

Diamond Divas featured on New Zealand’s Got Talent and are the daughters of NZ entertainer Frankie Stevens.

“We have connections to Frankie through past events so we are

excited to have Diamond Divas as a part of our celebrations.

“They are really fun and vibrant and will add to the party atmos-phere,” Katrina says.

Both Blenheim and Picton will have security to enforce the strict alcohol ban in place for the even-ing, to ensure everyone has an enjoyable time.

Celebrating the beginning of 2016 will be the fireworks displays which will fire off after the clock strikes midnight.

There are many beautiful, tranquil campsites throughout Marlborough, from the Moles-worth Station through to the Marlborough Sounds.

Here are just a few popular campsites, some of which have camping fees.

For more campsites, access and fees visit www.doc.govt.nz

Aussie Bay campsiteA tranquil setting beside the

sea, with a range of activities nearby including walking and mountain biking on the Queen Charlotte Track.

Off Queen Charlotte Drive in the Grove Arm of Queen Charlotte Sound, 15 km from Picton. Near Momorangi Bay. Sealed road is narrow and winding.

Access by steep driveway, tight turning for long vehicles. OK for motorhomes up to 7 metres.

Butchers Flat campsiteThis grassy, flat camping area

was once a gold mining area

and is great for picnicking or swimming.

You’ll also find walking and mountain biking opportunities nearby.

Picnic, swim or fish in the Wakamarina River and walk or mountain bike on the nearby Doom or Wakamarina Tracks.

There are high, unfenced cliffs at this campsite, so children need to be supervised. Toilets are wheelchair accessible, with assistance.

Turn off SH 6 into Wakama-rina Road at Canvastown and follow 15 km to end.

French Pass campsiteGateway to Rangitoto ki te

Tonga/D’Urville Island; watch the waters moving through Te Aumiti/French Pass.

This scenic camp is a great base for boating, fishing, swim-ming and kayaking.

approximately 70 km.Momorangi Bay campsiteA north-facing family

campsite beside a sheltered bay, popular for swimming,

inbriefHopai Sports a fun filled day

Amuse kids in PictonNeed to get the kids out of the house?Take them to Picton during the holidays and enjoy the attractions on the Foreshore. The popular Rail and Sail will be open everyday of the school holidays from 11am to 4pm, weather permitting, but closed Christmas Day.The Edwin Fox Maritime Museum will also have various family friendly activities over the holidays.

Country MusicThe Annual Country Music Awards will celebrate 25 years with this years show.Auditions are from 8am to 5pm Saturday 16 January & Sunday 17 January with the Rock n Roll section on the Saturday night.More than 230 entries with contestants travelling from all over New Zealand.Floorpride Civic Centre will be this years venue.

Markets galoreMarlborough’s two markets will be open during the holidays. The Artisan Market will be open on January 6 and Saturday morning (weather dependant). 9am to 1pm, Wynen Street Carpark.Farmers Market will open on Sundays, Januar y 3 and 10 at The A & P Showgrounds on Maxwell Rd.

This year’s Hopai Sports Day will be held on Saturday January 2, 2016 and promises a day filled with fun for the whole family to enjoy.

It’s an annual tradition for families to attend the sports day and picnic which has been held since 1920.

It’s an old fashioned family day out for everyone to enjoy. The traditional method of transport to the sports is by boat.

You are now also able to drive there, setting off from either Picton or Havelock, turn off at Linkwater, follow the Ke-nepuru Road until you get to the Nopera Bay Golf Course.

Just after that, turn right up the Crail Bay Road and follow the signs.

The children from the school have painted signs that are put up just before the sports. “Follow your nose” is the message.

Bring along a picnic lunch, the swim suits, deck chairs, sunshade, suntan lotion and get ready to participate or just be a spectator.

Just in case the weather changes, bring along some warm clothes as well. So, if joining in the races isn’t what you want to do, just come along and cheer everyone else on.

The Hopai committee run a small shop for the essential sweets, cold drinks and ice-creams.

A sausage sizzle caters for those who didn’t bring their lunch.

A small entry fee is charged and the

profits from the day are given away to local charities each year.

Two big events on the day are the hotly contested Hopai He Man race, which is open to women, men and teams, compris-ing of a swim and a long hill run, and the tug-of-war.

Teams have come back repeatedly to defend their titles from the previous year, and sometimes years.

Children’s races include the tree-legged race, egg and spoon, sack races and run-ning races. Grandmother and grandfather races never lack for entrants, neither do the married women and mens races.

The boat races kick off when the tides are suitable and lifejackets are compul-sory.

Admission is $5 and children 12 years and under are free. RIGHT: The children’s Tug ‘O’ War is a popular event at the Hopai Sports event.BELOW: Sack races at the Hopai Sports event.

Picton PowerHouse Night Mar-ket in December means it is full steam ahead for fortnightly Thursday night markets in Picton over the summer.

Held every second Thursday over January and February from 5pm till 9pm at the Picton Power-

House Maritime Heritage Reserve at 8 Wairau Road, Picton.

The first one will be held on Thursday January 7.

One of the event organisers, Jessie-Lee Fishburn, says Thurs-day was the best option.

“After speaking with people in the community as well as stall holders it was decided Thursday

was the best night because it allowed stall holders to do all the other markets in Blenheim.

“We know other areas around New Zealand have tried night mar-kets so it was time Marlborough had one and what better spot than Picton.

Jessie-Lee says buskers were encouraged to come along.

“We feel the buskers really add to the atmosphere on the night.”

She says the December night market was a success which showed there was a desire for a summer night market.

“Back in December it was quite a drizzly night so perhaps with some better weather we’ll get even more people.”

New menu set to delightSince the open ing of the

Lemong r a ss re s t au r a nt on Maxwell Road, diners have enjoyed the cleverly designed menu that showcases the very best of Thai and Vietnamese cuisine.

Owners Bu-nga Kraitaitong and Nut t av ut Rodsienglum have strived hard to provide a memorable exper ience for all their customers and have welcomed feedback since day one.

“It’s our aim for all our customers to have great service and food they will remember, and if there is something they want that isn’t offered, we are happy to hear their suggestions,” Bu-nga says.

As a result of the feedback, Lemongrass has made some special adjustments to its menu, as well as introducing some brand new dishes designed by the chefs.

“Some of our customers have sa id they would l i ke more vegetable and noodle dishes, so we have introduced more to the

menu.“We have also decided to make

the menu even more affordable for our customers.

“Normally we serve rice with each dish, but some customers prefer not to have any. So now we serve a small amount of rice and if customers like they can order more.

“This has enabled us to lower the prices,” she says.

In addition to these changes, Lemongrass is proud to introduce

some new additions. One new dish which is sure to

please is the Thai Curry Custard which is served in a young coconut.

“This is definitely a dish people should try, it’s new and has a beautiful presentation,” Bu-nga says.

Lemongrass will continue to be open throughout the holidays, with the exceptions of Christmas and Boxing Days when it will be closed.

One of Marlborough’s longest-es-tablished wineries, Whitehaven Wine Company, is celebrating the export of its one millionth case of wine to the USA with a big Christmas gift for Marlborough – a 10-year sponsor-ship package for the new ASB Civic Theatre.

Whitehaven managing director Sue White says the million case milestone was such a big achievement for her family winery that she wanted to share the success with the region.

“We’re proudly Marlborough – we use only Marlborough grapes and we process everything here in Marlborough – and we value the fact that we can market our wines as genuinely Marlborough.

“That authenticity is vital to us and I am pleased to be able to give something

back to this region for the privilege of being able to use Marlborough’s great attributes in marketing our wine in the United States,” she said.

A long-time supporter of theatre events in Marlborough, Sue has pledged sponsorship of the function room in the new theatre overlooking the Taylor River. It will be named the Whitehaven Wine Room.

“I’m especially pleased to be able to support the theatre knowing that it’s going to be used by so many groups in our community.”

Sue and her late husband Greg es-tablished Renwick-based Whitehaven Winery in 1994.

Whitehaven’s distribution agreement with North American liquor giant E & J Gallo enabled the winery to become one of the first New Zealand wineries

to penetrate the US market. The first year’s shipment to the

United States was 5000 cases in 2004.By 2010 when the NZ government

began actively promoting NZ wine exports to the US, Whitehaven had already become the favourite New Zealand wine being poured for Ameri-can consumers.

“The North American consumer took some time to understand Sau-vignon Blanc and I’m proud that Whitehaven played a significant part in paving the way for this variety in the US,” says Sue White.

Today, the winery concentrates on ex-porting its award-winning Sauvignon Blanc to the US, but Whitehaven was also an early exporter of Marlborough Pinot Noir, picking up its first US medal for its pinot a decade ago.

✃ Blenheim people are using the new red and yellow wheelie bins as intended but in Picton the bins have been used for household rubbish – not what they are intended for.

The big bright bins are a Council experi-ment in public place recycling; recyclables like plastic bottles, glass, cans and card-board go into the yellow bins and the red bins are for other waste like food scraps.

The Council is aware that, in other parts of the country, public place recycling has met with mixed success with some people not interested in using the correct bins for materials.

“Although there has been some very

positive feedback from both Blenheim and Picton, we’ve also discovered that people are dumping household rubbish in Picton in the foreshore bins – and that is not what these bins are designed to take,” says Council spokesman Stephen Rooney.

“For example, someone dumped a large packaging carton for a household appli-ance that was far bigger than the bins. There’ve also been plastic bags full of rubbish dumped nearby and recyclables tossed on the ground rather than put in the bin. Disappointingly, it does suggest a lack of interest in the concept.”

Stephen says the bins are being checked every day and emptied regularly.

He said the new bins were intended for the use of people out walking or enjoying the foreshore and were not receptacles for household overflow.

Picton has a kerbside collection service and the red and yellow bins are not there to replace that service.

Commercial waste for recycling is ac-cepted at the transfer station at no charge, as is household recycling and there’s a big new recycling bin in place, near the Coathanger Bridge at the Picton marina, for boaties coming in from the Sounds needing to dump household rubbish.

The public place recycling trial is due to run until February next year.

Use the red and yellow binsbut not for household rubbish

(Inside Caltex Main Street)

Poor customer serviceI waited for five to ten minutes in a main stream retailer before I was finally served and told I cannot buy or order the product from that store that I was after. Is it any wonder retail stores are dying when poor service like this prevails?Off to the internet I go and I’ll employ some-one else in a different NZ town/city.

Forum? Why do people refer to Market Place as the Forum? The Forum is the adjacent two story building.

Late night shopping Thursday 17thI heard so many people commenting that day around town - “is there something on in the forum?” Pity the public aren’t told about it and you retailers would likely get a better turnout...

Xfoliate staff lovelyWhat lovely staff at Xfoliate. It really is a pleasure to go there. And private too, unlike some places. Thanks guys

Christmas lights What a fantastic sight driving around town last Wed night.... Seymour Square - wow, Queen & Market St, The Forum - it brought joy to ones heart. Well done council for bringing back some Christmas cheer to the town.

Christmas treeI am saddened at Xmas Trees Comments..The Tree is beautiful, the town looks great. We live in an amazing place.I feel blessed to be part of this town and I show gratitude each and every day. Grateful.

Wage increase You’re exactly right on the money! So to speak... Government gets another tidy pay rise and the poor still have to line up on the street corner to get food, bit like Germany in the 30s when Hitler took council, National Socialist Dictator-ship control all over again! Only the wealthy who vote for their great leader will rise above poverty while the rest have to fight for scraps! No pay rise for me this year and it’s the first time in my working life not to get one and still everything goes up in price, come on John Key put the people first not your guiltless words of wisdom!

Well done FarmersFor years Farmers department store had the worst reputation for service everybody hated shopping there. BUT now I have to say they are awesome, properly the best in town. Well done to you all, love shopping with you and also the girls at Stevens are just as nice .

Not viable....It was written in the local paper months ago that Kmart have been told Blenheim don’t want them. That’s not the people I’m afraid....I’ve never heard such a load of trollop of why people don’t shop in town.If there were decent shops they would, offering good prices....things here are very expensive....If there were local shops, money would stay local....

Time for water meters? With this region being in constant drought surely it is time to introduce water meters? This policy would put a true value on water and aid water conservation. Feedback welcome but in the meantime enjoy your freshly filled swimming pool, washed car and watered garden. Best wishes Rob the greenie.

Parking in Blenheim.....Blenheim council should take a page out of Nelsons strategy.Free parking in town which has been extended further. My friend says the town is BUZZING....people from Blenheim over there doing CHRISTMAS SHOPPING, CLOTHES SHOP-PING....Honestly whoever runs Blenheim need to get savvy....freshen up, wake up.

WOW Hilton Place well done. Absolutely stunning.

Brill serviceI’d like to thank the fun-lovin ladies at Cher-ubs Childrenswear for the fab service. And kudos to the stylish great-grandmama in there who sung jingle bells rock to my little one!

Use the cycle laneWho were the two lycra clad morons cycling over the Grove Rd bridge in traffic when there’s a separate cycle lane over the bridge? Was dangerous.

Spirit of ChristmasTook the jet ski down to the blenheim rowing club. A very colourful xmas tree down there. Good to see people getting into the spirit of xmas.

Gift wrapping service?Would have been nice to see somewhere offering a gift wrapping service around town. For a donation to a charity maybe? Perhaps Farmers in exchange for the Hospice donation that we keep getting asked for every purchase...

Some boring peopleThe Wairau Valley is far from boring, only some people in it are boring because they can’t find anything to do.

More staff pleaseHey KFC get the gorse out of your pockets and put more staff on.

Xmas tree in forum -Awesome.Gardens at Seymour and Pollard Park - Awe-some. A big thanks to all the hard workers who cre-ated them all. Happy new year.

Sun Some of our well known Marlburians share their thoughts

Looking back at sportsports talk By Jacob Page

It’s that time of the year again when we all pause and have a look back at what was a fantastic year in New Zealand and Marlborough sport.

Highlights from a provincial perspec-tive have to include Sophie McKenzie’s back-to-back world championship light weight double victory.

I know many felt a little deflated when she was named Marlborough Sports Person of the Year for a second straight time but you cannot argue with being a world champion.

Georgia Catterick’s emergence into the Bike New Zealand squad.

This was a phenomenal effort and the first in many steps to what promises to be an exciting career for the teenager.

Ben Wheeler’s effort to make the Black Caps one-day cricket squad was a big moment.

This is my claim for fame having happily filled numbers for a Celtic third grade team which included Ben in 2004.

Here’s hoping injuries do not curtail his rapid rise.

The left arm quick will also be trying to get the ultimate prize of a test cap in time.

Internationally the Rugby and Cricket World Cup’s take most of the ac-colades.

For me, the cricket was more enjoy-able.

As a long suffering cricket tragic, it was exciting to see New Zealand get behind them and fully believe they could win the whole thing.

Grant Elliott’s six to beat South Africa in the semi-final, Kane Wil-liamson’s six against Australia to beat them by one wicket at Eden Park and Tim Southee’s 7-33 against England in Wellington are all memories to be treasured, even if we failed to fire in the final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Love heading into the outer Pelorus Sound on the Shangrila.2016 resolution hasn’t changed for years – get fitter and have greater balance in my life.

Anyone who was unaware just how good this generation of All Blacks was, just needed to watch the knockout games of the Rugby World Cup.

The saluted six of Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Keven Mealamu and Tony Woodcock all played their part.

The smashing of France in the quarter finals was then enhanced with a gritty semi-final win over the Springboks.

The final against Australia was one way traffic.

Had it not been for Ben Smith’s yellow card, the men in black would have won by 25 points.

It hasn’t sunk in that so many greats of the jersey have gone.

It’s going to be a strange new world come the first All Blacks test in June.

Congratulations must also go to the Highlanders for breaking their Super Rugby title duck and extending the Hur-ricanes’ one at the same time.

Many Marlburians would have sup-ported the southern franchise given the number of Tasman Makos players in the squad.

Let’s hope for a few Olympic medals to make their way back to Marlborough after the Olympics – now that’s a good New Year’s resolution.

Amazing lady turns 100

Mary Webber has had a life time of happiness, and as she celebrates her 100th birthday today she will do so with a huge smile of satisfaction on her face.

Mary, a resident of Waterlea Rest Home in Blenheim sat down with re-porter Celeste Alexander to reminisce on a busy life and how excited she is to share her milestone with her friends.

Up until one year ago Mary was walking into town and still is a very active member of the rest home.

Today she celebrates a century of life and does so with grace and her trademark sweet smile.

It’s evident by the attention she receives from rest home staff and resi-dents that she is a well liked member of their ‘Waterlea family’.

“Mary is one of life’s treasures, she is very special to us,” activities co-ordinator Karen Savage says.

“She is a gorgeous lady in every sense, gentle, kind and very happy. Anything you do for Mary she is always so appreciative, even of the really little things.

“We all love her here,” she says.Mary was born in Auckland on

December 30, 1915 and was one of three children.

Later in life Mary married her love Tom and the two found themselves living an ‘incredible’ life in the Tory Channel with their son Neil.

After the war Mary and her family settled at the Te Pangu Lodge, a guest house they operated which saw many people come and go in the time they were there.

“We had many people stay with us

and I enjoyed cooking for them. It was a lovely place to be and I remember it fondly,” she smiles.

Mary and Tom also owned a restau-rant in Christchurch for a number of years, serving up what she describes as ‘everyday food’.

“It was nice homely food that people seemed to enjoy. People said I was a very good cook and I had customers say they had to come back to have the food again.”

In the spare time Mary found be-tween family and work commitments, she was also an avid dressmaker and singer.

She loved to make her own clothing and even designed and sewed her own wedding outfit.

In the early years of their marriage, Mary and Tom would spend many Saturday evenings at social dances, and other days Mary spent time help-ing people as much as she could.

“She was a very giving person, always helping others,” her son Neil says.

“I was a very busy girl, always doing something. But I was very happy in my married life and my family meant so much to me,” she says.

Asked what she would do if she could do anything, she replied; “I would live my life over again!”

“I was married to a wonderful husband and had a happy family life,” she says.

Celebrations will kick off later today at Waterlea Rest Home with a high tea and a visit from Mayor Alistair Sowman.

Members Holiday Exhibition

Coastguard strongly urges any-one heading out on the water to wear a lifejacket this holiday season.

“The Christmas and New Year period is always a busy time for Coastguard volunteers and we can’t stress enough the impor-tance of wearing life jackets.

By wearing your life jacket

you’re giving yourself the best chance of survival because acci-dents are by definition unpredict-able, and it is extremely difficult to put on a life jacket once you are in the water.

Take them and wear them – they are your best protection when the unexpected happens,” said Patrick Holmes, CEO Coastguard New

Zealand.“Skippers also have a big role

to play in this - the skipper is responsible for every person on board the boat.

“They have an obligation to take responsibility for their passenger’s safety.” said Holmes.

Coastguard is running its Old-4New Lifejacket Upgrade through

to the end of January encouraging boaties and members of the public to bring along their old life jackets and trade them in for a brand new fit for purpose quality lifejacket at a great trade-in discount.

This is a big part of Coastguard’s safe boating message and is a great chance for kiwis to get sorted for summer.

Simple safety on boats

5 keys to safetyLife JacketsTake them – Wear them.Boats, especially ones under 6m in

length, can sink very quickly. Wearing a life jacket increases your

survival time in the water.CommunicationsTake two separate waterproof ways

of communicating so we can help you if you get into difficulties.

Marine WeatherNew Zealand’s weather can be

highly unpredictable. Check the local marine weather

forecast before you go and expect both weather and sea state changes.

Avoid AlcoholSafe boating and alcohol do not mix. Things can change quickly on the

water. You need to stay alert and aware.Skipper ResponsibilityThe skipper is responsible for the

safety of everyone on board and for the safe operation of the boat.

Stay within the limits of your vessel and your experience. Take a Coast-guard Boating Education Course, like Day Skipper, Boatmaster and marine VHF radio training - www.boatingeducation.org.nz

Coastguard chief executive Patrick Holmes urges people to wear their life jackets this summer.

The Department of Conservation is running a Summer Explorer Programme over January to encourage people to see some key environmental areas of Marlborough.

Several organisations have joined forces with DOC to make the events happen.

On January 6 there will be an Emerald Pools

tramp on the Pelorus Track and on January 8 there will be a Momorangi Campground foreshore for a hands on stream investigation.

A Wairau Lagoon guided mountain bike ride, a moa egg treasure hunt by kayak and a Kaipupu Point guided tour are amongst some of the events on offer during the first month of January.

DOC offers summer explorer options

Holiday safety tips are not some-thing parents with small children may want to think about.

No parent wants to think about accidents that can happen to their children, but they need to.

It is during the holidays, when we tend to get distracted, that accidents can happen.

Being aware of dangers in your home that come with the holidays is the first step in making sure you or your family are not a victim this season.

- If your children receive a paddling pool or family sized swimming pool

for Christmas, pay constant attention to children in or around it.

Depending on the size of the pool, the Marlborough District Council has information on the safety regulations.

- When using the BBQ, be careful not to burn yourself or others around you.

- Remember your food safety. Don’t risk food poisoning and ruin

your hoildays.- Be sun smart. Use sun lotion, stay

in the shade as much as possible and cover your skin, especially children.

- With children around the home more these holidays, be careful when

driving in and out of the property. Small children can easily be out of

view when reversing a vehicle.- Batteries are found in many toys,

so be aware that young children do not have access to them nor consume them.

- Security during the holidays is important. Secure your vehicle and home, and if you plan to travel away take all necessary steps to protect your belongings.

- When visiting the beach or rivers these holidays, ensure your children are well supervised to prevent ac-cidents and drownings.

Tips to keep safe these holidays

Life jacketsTake them and wear themNobody expects to fall overboard or their boat to sink. But, if you end up in the water, you have much more chance of saving yourself - and those on board with you - if you’re wearing a lifejacket.Lifejackets won’t save you unless you wear them. The Marlborough navigation bylaws require that all vessels have the sufficient number, size and type of lifejackets for everyone on the vessel. The Harbour Master has a zero tolerance approach to this rule. Anyone found to be in charge of a vessel without enough lifejackets on board will be issued an infringement notice and face a $200 penalty. That includes dinghies and kayaksIn the interests of safety it is strongly recommended that, on vessels under 6m, everyone should wear a lifejacket at all times while at sea.Lifejackets can be the difference between surviving and drowning.

•Travelling through multiple time zones can be a challenge for people who need to monitor their medication level frequently, like

diabetics and people who need careful monitoring of a heart condition.

•Take a letter from your GP outlining any significant medical history - including the dosages and generic names of any drugs you take.

•Wear a medic-alert bracelet if you have one.

•Discuss prevention of leg clots with your GP.

•Take a spare pair of glasses as well as the prescription for your glasses or contacts and enough lens solution for the whole journey.

•Take spare batteries for hearing aids.

Take particular care to keep up your fluid intake. If you’re going to a hot climate, remember that you may be less tolerant of the heat than others, even more so if you are overweight or have heart or diabetes problems. Beware of diarrhoea and constipation and make sure you know how to treat either situation. When going overseas, ensure you have travel insurance covering pre-existing conditions.Lastly, get as fit and healthy as possible before you go - travelling is often hard work!

With more commercial irrigation and industrial processes, and more households with flushing toilets, washing machines, dishwashers, spa and swimming pools, water use has increased rapidly.Marlborough now uses 70% more water than was the case 30 years ago. Water is the most important resource in our region. Please play your part in managing it well.Marlborough households use an average of about 500 litres of water a day. Most of the year this is where it goes:• 30% on showers and baths• 30% down the toilet

• 20% in the kitchen • 20% in the laundry. But in the summer, water use can increase to 1500 litres daily. Much of this goes down the drain or onto gardens. Ensure sprinklers are directed at gardens, not paved areas.A garden sprinkler delivers 900 litres of water per hour. Hosing during the heat of the day means much of that water evaporates into the air. Use an efficient garden irrigation system with a timer and water only in the cool of the early morning or later evening.A leaking pipe on your property

wastes water; 300 litres a day will disappear from a 1.5mm hole in a water pipe. Check that outside taps aren’t dripping. Commercial and irrigation water users are reminded to be aware of all conditions of their water take and water use consents.Council’s Compliance Team is monitoring all consented water takes. The Irrigation Status is regularly updated on Council’s website www.marlborough.govt.nz/Services/My-Property/Water-Information

Using our water resources wisely

Summer is the busiest time of year for Council’s Harbours Team as they maintain regular patrols in our waters to maintain safety and manage the risks that exist where commercial shipping and recreational boaties share the confined water space of the Marlborough Sounds. Harbour Master Captain Alex Van Wijngaarden has 20 years’ knowledge and experience patrolling this region and is one of New Zealand’s most experienced maritime emergency controllers. His deputy, Luke Grogan, is also a fully qualified Harbour Master.Captain Van Wijngaarden leads a team of four who are responsible for the

maintenance of maritime safety in our waters, dealing not only with commercial shipping and the fishing and aquaculture industry but also with the pleasure boaties who converge on the Sounds over summer. As well as managing all maritime safety matters and

marine emergencies, from oil spills to boats sinking, the Harbour Master must be consulted about, and gives permission for, • Fireworks displays on

the water• Organised swimming or

community water sports events

• Regattas or events involving kayaking or water skiing or the sea leg of any triathalon.

Our Harbours staff are available 24 hours a day; contact a duty marine officer by phoning the District Council, 03 520 7400.Marlborough has one of the longest coastlines of any region in New Zealand and the Harbour Master and his team are an important part of the Marlborough District Council. Their jurisdiction extends from Willawa Point, north of Kekerengu, to Point Soucis, north of Nelson, and includes all the coastline in between, including the Marlborough Sounds.

Stand outfrom the crowd?

Wairau Hospital clinical head of emergency Dr Andrew Morgan has encouraged everyone to take care of themselves and their loved ones over the holidays.

If injury or illness does occur he urges people to consider their options and not to treat the ED as a default option.

“It’s in everyone’s interest that the ED is treated as a place where people with serious needs can quickly receive medi-cal help. It’s not set up to focus on routine health care,” he says.

“Most doctors would agree on a short list of problems that should always be treated as emergencies – chest pains, stroke symptoms, breathing difficulties, and severe and uncontrolled bleeding among them,” he said.

“On the other hand, insect bites, strains, sprains and the flu were not gener-ally emergencies and the patient would receive more appropriate treatment elsewhere,” he said.

Marlborough Primary Health Or-ganisation chief executive Beth Tester

says the PHO, GPs and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board have been working this year to inform the public about the most appropriate places in Marlborough to seek care for non-emergency conditions.

“Primary health providers such as GPs, practice nurses and pharmacists were the people to see for most health matters,” she said.

“If you are feeling unwell and it’s not a medical emergency, your options include calling Healthline on 0800 611 116, or consulting a pharmacist, your GP or practice nurse,” she said.

All the general practices in Marlborough will be open on non-statutory holiday days over the Christmas and New Year period.

Visitors to Marlborough who need a GP on these days should access the Marlborough Primary Health Organisa-tion website at www.marlboroughpho.org.nz for the acute on-call GP phone number.

People urged to stay safe these holidays

People should consider options and use Wairau Hospital Emergency Department for serious needs only.
