30 Chin-ups in 30 daysThe chin-up exercise targets the bicep muscles of the upper arm and the latissimus dorsi muscles of the upper back in particular along with numerous other muscle groups which aid movement and stability, not least the abdominals. It is a classic bodyweight exercise which, like the standard push-up, is a mainstay in military training programs because it builds truly functional strength and endurance.

In the chin-up exercise, your hands grip the bar with an underhand grip, meaning that your wrists and palms are facing toward your body. The chin-up exercise should not be confused with the pull-up exercise in which you grip the bar with an overhand grip, meaning that your wrists and palms are facing away from your body. Although the overall movement is the same in both exercises, the change of hand grip makes a significant difference in terms of the way the muscles are recruited.

Things You NeedThe only piece of equipment you need to be able to get started with chin-ups is a chin-up bar. Most gyms have a purpose-built bar for chin-ups and pull-ups but there are a variety of alternatives available for home use, most of which fit inside a standard door frame. Exercise equipment retailers can supply bars that screw into the door frame or bars that hang over the door without the need for permanent fixing so with a bit of research you’ll find the ideal solution for you. Of course, with a little creativity you can use everyday objects in place of a bar, with tree branches and children’s playground equipment providing great substitutes along with exposed beams if you happen to have any around your home.
