Immunisation Program 2013 and HPV vaccine for boys

Since 2003 government schools have been co-operating with the NSW Ministry of Health to implement theAdolescent School-based Immunisation Program. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for yourassistance and support in ensuring the success of the NSW program.

The Australian Government has announced that the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine will be providedfree to male students in high schools from 2013.

I now seek your continued co-operation as this is implemented in NSW through the NSW School-basedImmunisation Program.

In NSW, the HPV vaccine will be offered to boys in Year 7 and Year 9 in 2013 and 2014 and then annuallyin Year 7 only from 2015 onwards. The HPV immunisation will continue to be offered annually to femalestudents in Year 7 only.

Immunisation clinics will continue in Intensive English Centres to offer a range of vaccines as appropriate, including HPV vaccine.

Deputy's Report

It has been very pleasing to see all those students who actively support our school and its community. Theydisplay their attitude and commitment to work through their efforts in the classroom, on the sporting fieldsand in the pride they have in their uniform.

As we read this Year 10 students are gearing themselves up for Scope interviews where they will comparethemselves and their work against a standard. We wish them good luck and encourage “Personal Bests”from each student. We will be publishing a timetable for Year 10 in relation to the interview process forScope and there will be some alternate attendance requirements needed so that this project and that of the

Board of Studies (All My Own Work) can be completed before the end of term.

Unfortunately, some students still insist on wearing inappropriate uniform (wrong colour, hoods, tooshort or rolled up). These students (without notes from parents) are asked to see the Deputy for uniformsubstitution where pre loved uniforms and safety pins are provided where possible. Please be consciousof this expectation.

Fantastic to see our Year 9 Work Education class involved in Work Experience this term. Reports backfrom employees have been encouraging and students have dipped their toe into what the real world is like.Typically, shyness and waiting for instructions were some of the feedback, however this will change withmaturity and further placements.

Lastly, we encourage students at the end of the school day to make their way home as soon as possibleand not to linger around the entrances to the school. The relationship with our neighbours is a good one andwe appreciate students who respect the “quiet enjoyment” of the public and keep the area clean.

"Build ME a future" Science & Engineering Challenge

Cardiff High School Champion School!

On Tuesday 16th October, I had the pleasure of taking 22 year 8 students to the University of Newcastle tocompete against 5 other schools from our local area in a range of Science and Engineering activities. On theday, they participated in one of 5 activities: Designing and building a tower to withstand weights dropped onit from height; simulating electricity distribution to towns; designing and building a rubber band propelled car;designing and building a Styrofoam plane and a catapult! It was a fantastic day where the studentsdisplayed exceptional problem solving and teamwork skills and came away as Champion school, winning theday by at least 200 points. A special mention to the girls who built the tower. Even after 15 weights hadbeen dropped on it, it was still standing! What an accomplishment.

It was a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding day and these students have done Cardiff High School proud,

Student Volunteering Program

This year in terms 2 and 3 students from year 7, 8, 9 and 10 donated their sports time to volunteer in thecommunity.

Their projects started from a TTT forum where students Megan and Renae Crook represented our school atthe Speers Point Council Chambers with other Primary and High School students in the Lake Macquariearea. The girls participated in workshops to identify the Time, Treasures and Talents in Cardiff High Schooland the wider community. Megan and Renae then brought these ideas back to the volunteering group anddiscussed how we as a group could make this work into our volunteering program.

The group then liaised with Garden Suburb Primary School’s principal and teachers, where they participatedin a reading program and art mural project with the students at Garden Suburb Primary.

After two terms of actively participating in this program the volunteers from our high school had improved thereading level of the children by 15% and completed an art mural while helping assist the children in a funrewarding way.

Students also went to the Garden Suburb Nursing Home to listen to and learn from the residents stories andto assist them in nail painting, pancake making, bingo, reading newspaper headlines and craft activities. Many of the students came away feeling warmed, welcomed and appreciated by the elderly people whoshared their stories of the past.

After completing this program Megan Crook, Riley Parkinson, Maddison Singler and Kimberley Morrispresented our schools project at the Newcastle Tafe to other schools from Lake Macquarie and the Hunter.

They stated during the presentation that:

“The group learnt how to communicate with children and participate in groups”.

“We faced misbehaving children but faced this problem by changing groups andcontacting the teacher.”

“We made new friends with the students who participated in the mural and readingprogram.”

“We learnt that these projects made us connect with our wider community.”

“These projects allowed young children and high school students to see the outcomeand reward of working in groups and sticking together.”

PD/Health/PE Report

With the year rapidly coming to a close, we wish our current Year 12 students all the best for their HSC andbeyond. As a parent of a Year 12 student myself, I sympathise with both the parents and students as theygo through these exams – it can be a very challenging time for all of us.

Our Year 11 PDHPE students have started their HSC studies and will have assessment items in the comingweeks. It is important for them to remember that there is no ‘down time’ as far as their HSC goes. Assessment will be a constant feature of their future, at least until the end of term three next year. As such, absences need to be avoided as much as possible and all students in Year 11-12 need to be accountablefor their studies.

All students in Years 7-10 PDHPE will have assessment items due in the coming weeks. These tasks willbe placed on the school’s Moodle site in the PDHPE page. As well as this, students will also be given apaper copy of the task for their year group.

On this topic, I need to encourage students to keep to the due dates. Excuses such as their printer notworking cannot be accepted. Students will have the opportunity to either email their work to their teacher orthe Head Teacher ([email protected]) who will pass it onto the teacher, or bring it into schoolon a thumbdrive and have their teacher save their work onto the teacher’s laptop. As always, the option ofhand writing an assessment task is accepted.

2013 Planning

Plans are well underway for what PDHPE will look like in 2013. Students from some classes will be askedto provide feedback to the PDHPE staff about the program of study that they followed this year. Thisfeedback will be considered in the development of our curriculum for 2013.

As you may have heard, there are great changes occurring to education at a National Level, with NationalCurricula being progressively rolled out. In our subject, PDHPE will change to Health and Physical Educationbut no changes to our current syllabuses are planned until 2016 at the earliest.

Win for Cardiff HS!

Recently, Mr Maher (Collingwood tragic) was informed that he had won a state-wide AFL tippingcompetition. Thinking he was in the money, Mr Maher proceeded to spend up on a nice dinner for thefamily to only be informed a few days later that the $1500 prize was for AFL sporting gear for his school…. So happy days for Cardiff HS and sad days for Mr Maher’s bank balance!

After talking with some students and the Principal, it was decided to order a set of AFL jumpers for theschool. The design was quickly settled and Cardiff HS can look forward to not only having a team in theUnder 15 knockout next year, but also wearing with pride our new jumpers. The design is as follows:
