Open day for applicants – ‘la Journée de rencontres’Held in February or March in Paris, la Journée derencontres is organised to welcome all shortlistedBA applicants. The day includes sample classes, alibrary visit, lunch and activities with currentstudents. There are talks about the BAprogramme, as well as practical matters such asaccommodation and financial matters.

Visiting ULIPProspective students who are consideringapplying to ULIP are welcome to visit byarrangement. BA in French StudiesOur BA offers you the opportunity to study thelanguage, culture and history of France inFrance. It is your chance to understand thecountry from an insider's point of view.

Our unique BA in French Studies gives you theopportunity to acquire a deep knowledge of theFrench language and French speaking culturesthrough a three-year programme in the heart ofParis, with many courses taught entirely inFrench.

The BA course is specifically designed for thestudy of the social, linguistic and culturalcontext in which you are living. Graduates fromULIP will be able to speak and write French tonear-native standards. They will also have aspecial understanding of French ways ofthinking, negotiating and planning, and Frenchculture and life.

BA French Studies: programme outlineYear 1 (4 units)A year of ‘introductions’, including:• study of French History since the Revolution

as well as cultural productions and socialissues over two centuries with methods andcritical approaches to various genres – thenovel, poetry, theatre, art, cinema, mediastudies and contemporary social and politicaldebates

• core courses in grammar, reading and writingskills, and pronunciation.

Year 2 (4 units)• study of the major ideological, social,

historical, cultural and aesthetic roots ofcontemporary France.

• systematic study of French and Englishtranslation and advanced French language.

• comparative French/English half-course witha literary or business studies option.

• introduction to French media and society orapplied linguistics.

Year 3 (4 units)• a choice of options including French cinema,

nineteenth-century fiction, women’s literatureand film in France, art and exhibition, thehistory and representation of Paris – all setwithin the context of contemporary Frenchintellectual debates.

Why choose to study at ULIP?Our distinctive BA in French Studies lasts threeyears rather than the usual four, and manycourses are taught entirely in French. Withcohorts of 60 students or less, students benefitfrom small, intimate classes that help theirspoken and written French to near-nativestandards. A particular focus on Frenchintellectual and cultural life, and total immersionin French language and contemporary culture,means that our graduates are highly sought afterby employers for their language skills andcultural knowledge. ULIP’s central location in the7th arrondissement, on the eastern side of theEsplanade des Invalides, means it is within easyreach of all corners of the city.

AssessmentYour results are determined by a combination ofassessed coursework and examination.

Entry requirementsWe welcome applications from students whohave obtained, or expect to obtain, one of thefollowing qualifications:• 3 GCE A-levels (ABB, with at least a B in

French)• Welsh Baccalaureate (core plus options), with

at least B in A-Level French• 5 Scottish Highers (AABBB) with at least a B

in French or 3 Scottish Advanced Highers(ABB)

• ABBBC at Higher Level in the Irish LeavingCertificate with at least B in French at HigherLevel

• 36 points in the International Baccalaureatewith at least 6 points in French at HigherLevel

• Advanced Diploma (all Lines of Learning),with at least B in A-level French

How to applyAll applications, including those frominternational students and mature students,should be made through the Universities andColleges Admissions Service (UCAS).(www.ucas.ac.uk). Shortlisted applicants areinterviewed either in London or Paris. Theinterview is carried out partly in French andpartly in English and is a means for ULIP toidentify your strengths as well as yourmotivation for the course. Candidates will beasked to complete a test in French in order tohelp determine your language needs if you doaccept an offer of a place to study at ULIP. Wewelcome applications from students from allbackgrounds and from students wishing to takea gap year after leaving school.

Year Abroad ProgrammeOur core course will improve your grammar,written French and translation skills. A specialoption will further develop your interest inFrench culture and language. ULIP welcomessuch undergraduates studying French who wishto improve their French in a British academicsetting in the centre of Paris. Our speciallydesigned programme enables you to analyse,understand and correct yourself in an equal-ability group with the help of specialised tutors.A Year Abroad Advisor is responsible for thesupervision and support of students enrolled atULIP for all or part of their third year abroad.

Year Abroad Programme StructureUndergraduates from degree programmes with aFrench component can choose to spend either asemester (10 weeks of teaching) or an academicyear (20 weeks of teaching) at ULIP. Ourprogramme is organised around twocomponents: a core course and an optionalmodule or filière.

The core course comprises the systematic studyof grammar and practice of written French (threehours per week), and translation into French andinto English (two hours per week).For the optional modular part of the course, youhave a choice of filières with a linguistic orcultural theme (three hours per week).

ParisFrom Montmartre to the Marais, Paris’ museumsand monuments, bars and restaurants, eventsand festivals illustrate its cultural diversity andthe sheer breadth of things to see and do in thiscolourful, dynamic city.

Making Paris your campusParis is the heart of French culture and a thrivingstudent city. It now has 13 French universities,and over 50 other higher education institutions,and is populated by some 300,000 students. Asone of the most exciting and stimulating cities inthe world, it is an ideal place to immerse yourselfin the French language and culture.

Museums and galleriesParis has over 150 museums and galleries to suitall interests, from fine art to photography,literature to history. European Union citizens under 26 benefit fromfree admission to national museums. Specialrates are often available for students, andnational museums are free for everyone on thefirst Sunday of every month.

SportsWhether you prefer to participate or spectate,Paris is extremely well provisioned for thosewith sports interests. Sixty different activities areorganised by the town halls (mairiesd’arrondissement, in central Paris, mairies in thesuburbs). A Guide du sport à Paris is availablefree of charge from the Mairie in Paris, providingdetails of where to go in the city for swimming,horseriding, dance classes, squash, martial artsand so on. The Students’ Union also manages a number ofsports-oriented societies including a footballclub, running and aerobics societies and a skiand board society, which students areencouraged to join.

Paris is the heart of French cultural resourcesand a thriving student city. Choose to live inParis for your studies and you will choose to livein Europe.

AccommodationOnce you have received an offer to study atULIP, you will receive comprehensiveinformation about the housing options availableto you as a student in Paris. Please note thatthere is no college accommodation for studentsat ULIP.

The Accommodation Service providesinformation and advice to students in finding asuitable place to live. Options include studenthostels, private student halls of residence,lodging with a family, renting your own studioflat or flat-sharing.

Health and welfareULIP students have access to the French nationalhealth cover, the Sécurité sociale, either throughthe European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), orby registering to the Sécurité sociale directly viaStudent and Academic Services. Students willreceive detailed information on the basic level ofhealth cover provided by the Sécurité sociale, aswell as information on subscribing to additionalhealth cover, once their place at ULIP has beenconfirmed.

General welfare information, advice and supportis provided directly by ULIP, through our websiteand by our staff. In certain instances, our staffwill liaise with our Consortium partner RoyalHolloway to ensure that we provide the fullestand highest quality of care. In particular, wework with Royal Holloway’s Educational andSupport Office and Counselling Service to ensurethat we offer the most appropriate and highestquality support to students

The UnionThe Students’ Union catering for a rapidlygrowing institute, is expanding and developing.Having a relatively small student body, theUnion has always been easy to get involvedwith; from being a member of the Events Teamto a member of the ‘Executive Committee’ -whether a Year Representative, Vice President oreven the President. The Student-Staff Committeeat ULIP is an important link between the studentbody and the staff and acts as a channel to voiceconcerns or any problems arising during theacademic year. Regular meetings give everystudent a chance to make their voices heard – byfellow student and staff members alike.

Clubs and SocietiesSince all the SU’s clubs and societies are student-run, activities and societies vary from year toyear. Careers adviceAs a University of London student, you areautomatically entitled to make free use of theSpecialist Institutions Careers Service (SICS), runby The Careers Group, the University of London’scentral careers service. Located in London, TheCareers Group is run by professional careersadvisers who are there to help you prepare forlife after university and with career developmentopportunities during your vacations.

Whatever your career plans, SICS offers acomprehensive and highly focused careerplanning and development service. Support andadvice is available on site in London or by e-mail.

ULIP also has a dedicated careers adviser whocomes to Paris during the academic year. Sheprovides customised seminars as well as offeringone-to-one advice sessions.

Life after ULIP

We aim to offer you a user-friendly learningenvironment which you can use as a base foryour explorations of French language andculture in all its diversity.

The Learning Resources CentreThe Learning Resources Centre includesdocument collections carefully chosen for theirrelevance to your studies, a multimedia room,and the students’ computer rooms andphotocopying and printing facilities. The Loansand Help Desk services operate during officehours, but students have extended access to theCentre and its resources six days a week usingtheir electronic student cards.

The LRC’s collections include books, films, CD-ROMS, document files and a selection of currentnewspapers and periodicals in both English andFrench. The multimedia room houses ourcollections of feature films and documentaries,and is equipped with workstations formultimedia work and with individual videoviewing stations. There is also a student cinemaroom where course-based films are shown andwhich is available, upon request, for smallergroup viewings of films or for multimediapresentations.

Online Resources and Computing ServicesULIP has a wide range of electronic resourcesincluding our “Moodle” virtual learningenvironment. All students are given a ULIP emailaccount which is an important means ofcommunication between them and theUniversity. Students can also connect to theInternet within the Resources Centre from theirpersonal laptops via Wifi.

Libraries in ParisYou may wish to make additional use of Paris’extensive choice of public and institutionallibraries and specialist collections to complementyour studies – a number of major libraries areopen to students and you can apply to use manyfurther specialist collections.

Students with Specific Learning Difficultiesand DisabilitiesULIP welcomes students with specific learningdifficulties and disabilities and is committed toproviding quality services and support. ULIPoffers advice and guidance for prospective andcurrent students with specific learningdifficulties and disabilities, and provides thefollowing types of support:

• Liaising with academic staff and coordinatingthe provision of academic assistance, such asspecial examination arrangements andadvance access to teaching materials.

• Arranging assistance around ULIP and inlectures, such as personal helpers and bookfetchers.

• Providing assistance for students in applyingfor support funding, such as the DisabledStudents’ Allowance.

Tuition FeesULIP’s fee structure is reviewed on an annualbasis; please refer to our website for the latestinformation.

UK Government SupportStudents should apply as early as possible totheir local student finance agency, who willdetermine eligibility for:• Student Loan for Fees• Student Loan for Living costs• Living Cost Grant

Please note, if you take out a UK GovernmentStudent Loan to cover the cost of tuition fees,the money will be paid directly to ULIP. If this isthe case, you will not have to pay anything backuntil after you graduate and are earning at least£21,000 per year. You will then repay your feesat a rate related to your level of earnings. If youchoose not to take out a Student Loan or are noteligible for one, the first instalment of the tuitionfee will be due on the first day of term.

Additional Financial SupportDetails of support packages offered by ULIP tostudents from lower income families in the formof bursaries and scholarships are available fromthe ULIP website.

Housing BenefitThrough the Caisse d’Allocations Familiales(CAF), the French government currently grantshousing benefit to European Union studentsenrolled on university courses in Paris, subject tocertain conditions.
