THE LIFE OF CHRIST Following the bloodline From Abraham to Moses

Remember, as we are following the bloodline to Messiah. we are only able to hit the highlights knowing that we will be hits some of these as we go.. JESUS TOLD US TO LOOK FOR THESE THINGS.. that in the Scripture they spoke of Him..

John 5:39–40 39 You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life;

and these are they which testify of Me. 40 But you are not willing to come to Me that

you may have life.

so many of these O.T. items point to JESUS.. We will pick up on these as we go. MANA John 6:32-42

32 Then Jesus said to them, ―Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but wMy Father gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.‖

34 xThen they said to Him, ―Lord, give us this bread always.‖ 35 And Jesus said to them, y―I am the bread of life. zHe who comes to Me shall never

hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never athirst. 36 bBut I said to you that you have seen Me and yet cdo not believe. 37 dAll that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and ethe one who comes to Me I will 6by no means cast out. 38 For I have come down from heaven, fnot to do My own will, gbut the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, hthat of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should

raise it up at the last day. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, ithat everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.‖

41 The Jews then 7complained about Him, because He said, ―I am the bread which came down from heaven.‖ 42 And they said, j―Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‗I have come down from heaven‘?‖ Rock, stone that the builders rejected, sheep that was silent in Isa.

as we track with JESUS in the Old Testament. all the prophecies concerning the coming of Jesus. and even some Cameo appears of Jesus himself. we looked at GEN. 14- Melchizedek we passed by Sodom and Gomorrah ... Genesis 18:1–2 (NKJV) 1 Then the LORD appeared to him by the terebinth trees of Mamre, as he was sitting in the tent door in the heat of the day. 2 So he lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, three men were standing by him; and when he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the ground,

Genesis 19:1 (NKJV) 1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground. we made it in our study to Gen. 22 - Abraham and Isaac on Mount Moriah. TAKE YOUR SON YOUR ONLY SON .........

we move past Abraham, understanding that so much more could be said about Abraham and Isaac and how they relate to coming of messiah. but again this is to highlight areas not a in-depth study at this point. TURN TO: **GEN. 27 - WHO DID JACOB WRESTLE WITH Jacob has stolen Esau's blessing and birthright very important in bible times, he would become the patriarch of the family ... so his brother hates him Genesis 27:41–45 So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, ―The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.‖ 42 And the words of Esau her older son were told to Rebekah. So she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said to him, ―Surely your brother Esau comforts himself concerning you by intending to kill you. 43 Now therefore, my son, obey my voice: arise, flee to my brother Laban in Haran. 44 And stay with him a few days, until your brother‘s fury turns away, 45 until your brother‘s anger turns away from you, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send and bring you from there. Why should I be bereaved also of you both in one day?‖ flee this is 450 miles away..

now some 20 years later, he has been working for his uncle Laban , he now has a family and its time to make his own way. GOD CALLS HIM Genesis 31:3 Then the LORD said to Jacob, ―Return to the land of your fathers and to your family, and I will be with you.‖ he is not sure how his brother it going to take him coming home, remember his brother last they saw each other hated him.. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Genesis 32:6–7 Then the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, ―We came to your brother Esau, and he also is coming to meet you, and four hundred men are with him.‖

7 So Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed; and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks and herds and camels, into two companies. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- he keeps sending gifts to his brother as he is coming to meet him..

Page 5: 3- The Bloodline - Abraham to Moses

5

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gen. 32:22 And he arose that night and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven sons, and crossed over the ford of Jabbok.23 He took them, sent them over the brook, and sent over what he had. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacob knows that he is in a life threatening situation and wants to appease his brother with these gifts. He spaces them all out so that Esau's wrath might be appeased when he sees all of these animals. Cleverness! Scheming his way out of a situation that he had already turned over to God.

God is wanting to work in Jacob's life. He has chosen Jacob to be one of the patriarchs, the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. God has chosen that the Messiah would, one day, come from Jacob and one of the tribes.

Jacob has been chosen by God for special privileges, but, he is still not usable; so, God has a problem. Jacob is not fully surrendered to God. God can't do all he desires to do for you until your life is completely surrendered to Him.

As long as you can get by with your wit, your cunning and your devices; God is apt to let you go, but He will put the squeeze on you. God put the squeeze on Jacob when Laban came, but he put up the stones and made a non-aggression pact with Laban and got out of it. Now the word has come that Esau is coming and the squeeze is on and so he prays; but, he turns right back to his scheming again. He hasn't fully surrendered his life and so, God can not do the full work He is wanting to do in Jacob's life. It takes complete surrender and so God has to deal further with him. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------24 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I believe that Jacob wanted to get a good night's rest and so he sent his wives, children and servants over to the other side. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob‘s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacob is now in pain and crippled. Jacob‘s hip is dislocated—which means he will no longer be able to do something he‘s relied on for years: He‘ll no longer be able to run.

Page 6: 3- The Bloodline - Abraham to Moses

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------26 And He said, ―Let Me go, for the day breaks.‖ But he said, ―I will not let You go unless You bless me!‖ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of times it is difficult to understand the full truth of the story by reading words on a page. Words on a page do not give you tonal inflection. I think that because we don't hear the tonal inflections, we, oftentimes, misinterpret scripture.

In the Garden of Eden when God said to Adam, "...Where art thou?" we often hear that as the words of an arresting officer ready to do him in. I think if we had heard the voice in the garden we would have heard the sob of a heart broken father. We need to hear the tone of voice. Fortunately when Hosea makes commentary on this he gives us the tone of voice. Hosea says in chapter twelve, verse four, "Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed; he wept, and made supplication unto him..." So, Jacob was not demanding from a place of strength, but he was crying out from a place of weakness. He was now defeated. Jacob's plan was to run if all failed, but now God has put an end to that plan. He has put his hip out of socket and there is no way that Jacob can run. God has brought Jacob to the place of total surrender as he weeps and prays for God's blessing. It is when we get alone with God that good things begin to happen. Christ came to

wrestle with Jacob, and the struggle lasted all night. Keep in mind that Jacob was not wrestling to get a blessing from God; rather, he was defending himself and refusing to yield. The Lord wanted to break Jacob and bring him to the place where he would honestly say, ―Not I, but Christ‖ (Gal. 2:20). All night long, Jacob defended himself and refused to surrender or even admit that he had sinned. Then God weakened Jacob, and the wrestler could only cling! Now instead of scheming for a blessing or bargaining for a blessing, he asked God for the blessing—and he received it.1

Hosea 12:2-6

2 ―The LORD also brings a charge against Judah, And will punish Jacob according to his ways; According to his deeds He will recompense him. 3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, And in his strength he struggled with God. 4 Yes, he struggled with the Angel and prevailed; He wept, and sought favor from Him. He found Him in Bethel, And there He spoke to us—

5 That is, the LORD God of hosts. The LORD is His memorable name. 6 So you, by the help of your God, return; Observe mercy and justice, And wait on your God continually. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 27 So He said to him, ―What is your name?‖ He said, ―Jacob.‖28 And He said, ―Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.‖ -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jacob responds to God and says his name is "heelcatcher," "supplanter." One who takes advantage of one by catching his heel. I'm a heelcatcher who has gotten by with my wits and my cunning.

The blessing is that, no longer will you be Jacob or "heelcatcher," but you will be Israel or "ruled by God." You will no longer be a self-sufficient, self-made man, but you will be a man ruled by God.

What a blessing when your life is ruled by God. This is exactly what Jacob needed and the blessing was obtained by his surrender to God. God had to cripple him in order to crown him. The Bible says, "Woe unto him who strives with his maker." Why? Because God desires only the best for you and when you wrestle with Him, you are actually fighting against your own good. God wants to show you His mercy and His love, but you're fighting against it when you run from Him and wrestle against Him.

So, Jacob is crippled and is now defeated. He surrenders and he weeps and prays for a blessing. The blessing is a change of character. The name expressed his character. "Supplanter" very well expressed the character of this sly and cunning guy, Jacob. That's exactly what he was, but now there is going to be a change of character and what a blessing that change was.

God wants to change your character from a carnal man to a spiritual man; from a life governed by the flesh to one governed by the Spirit. That's God's intention for you. Does God have to cripple you to do it? I hope not! I hope that we will not be so foolish as to wrestle with God until He has to bring us into full submission to Him. If God has to use that measure, one day we might say with Paul, "...Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me." (IICor.12:9). The day came when Jacob rejoiced in the crippling, because of the work; the power of God was manifested in his life when he came to the place of surrender to God.

Verse twenty-eight is often misinterpreted because they do not hear the tone of Jacob's pleading voice. They think that Jacob prevailed with God because of his tenacity, but he prevailed with God by his surrender.

The LORD is open to the cry of His children. Often, the time we prevail with Him is when we pray and weep and come to the end of ourselves. Israel = governed by god , prince of God he wrestled with God and was changed forever.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 29 Then Jacob asked, saying, ―Tell me Your name, I pray.‖ And He said, ―Why is it that you ask about My name?‖ And He blessed him there.30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: ―For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.‖31 Just as he crossed over Penuel the sun rose on him, and he limped on his hip.32 Therefore to this day the children of Israel do not eat the muscle that shrank, which is on the hip socket, because He touched the socket of Jacob‘s hip in the muscle that shrank. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other words, what difference does it make what my name is.

Jacob named the place Peniel (―face of God‖) because he had seen God face to face and had been spared. As before (28:19; 31:47; 32:2), he named the place to commemorate the event. However, ―no one has ever seen God‖ (John 1:18). For an explanation of this alleged contradiction see comments on Exodus 33:11, 20; John 1:18.

John 1:18. The statement No one has ever seen God (cf. 1 John 4:12) may seem to

raise a problem. Did not Isaiah say, ―My eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty‖? (Isa. 6:5) God in His essence is invisible (1 Tim. 1:17). He is One ―whom no one has seen or can see‖ (1 Tim. 6:16). But John 1:18 means, ―no one has ever seen God‘s essential nature.‖ God may be seen in a theophany or anthropomorphism but His inner essence or nature is disclosed only in Jesus.2

even in the simple reading of this passage we see that who he wresled with was more than just a man.. Jacob understood this when he named the place. Brokenness is how God used men and women of God.. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ***MOVING AHEAD TO GEN. 49 "And Jacob called his sons and said, 'Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days'" Genesis 49:1 (NKJ) When he had gathered them together he began to prophesy over each of them. When he got to his son Judah, he gave a prophecy concerning the Messiah:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GEN 49:8 ―Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise; Your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; Your father‘s children shall bow down before you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Judah is in the line of Messiah , his name means Praise. so there is a play on words but why would his brothers praise Him .. MESSIAH comes from his line.. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 9 Judah is a lion‘s whelp; From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bows down, he lies down as a lion; And as a lion, who shall rouse him? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHELP — a young offspring of various carnivorous mammals, such as a dog, wolf, or lion; a puppy or cub. In the Bible the word ―whelp‖ always refers to a lion cub and is always used figuratively, for instance, of the tribes of Judah (Gen. 49:9) and Dan (Deut. 33:22).3 who is this that is prophesied about..

Revelation 5:5 But one of the elders said to me, ―Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals.‖ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ the idea of the scepter is that it is sovereign power. Esther 8:4 (NKJV) 4 And the king held out the golden scepter toward Esther. So Esther arose and stood before the king, Isaiah 14:5 (NKJV) 5 The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked, The scepter of the rulers; The word Scepter has been understood by Rabbis to mean the "tribal staff" or "tribal identity" of the twelve tribes of Israel. This "tribal identity" was linked, in the minds of the Jews, to their right to apply and enforce Mosaic law upon the people, including the right to adjudicate capital cases and administer capital punishment, or jus gladii (The jus gladii is a legal term which refers to the legal authority to adjudicate capital cases and impose capital punishment.)4 ------------------ SHILOH - ילה 7886 ‖n?. it is well documented that the word "Shiloh" has been understood for millennia to be an idiom for the Messiah.6 Therefore, according to this prophecy, the tribal identity or scepter of the tribe of Judah would not cease until the Messiah came. Judah was not only the name of the son of Jacob, but it was also the name of the southern kingdom of the divided nation of Israel. With these definitions in place we can restate the prophecy as follows:7 "The [National identity of Judah, which includes the right to enforce Mosaic law, including the right to administer capital punishment upon the people, as called for in the Torah] shall not depart from [the southern kingdom (Judah)], nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh [the Messiah] comes; and to him shall be the obedience of the people." This prophecy gives specific indicators regarding the time of the coming of the Messiah! The prophecy declares that he would come before the right to impose Jewish law (which includes capital punishment) is restricted and before the national identity of Judah is removed! During the 70-year Babylonian captivity, from 606-537 B.C., the southern kingdom of Israel, Judah, had lost it's national sovereignty, but retained it's tribal staff or national identity.2 It is very significant that in the book of Ezra we read that during the 70-year Babylonian captivity the Jews still retained their own lawgivers or judges.3 The Jews maintained their identity and judicial authority over their own people even during 70 years of slavery. The scepter had not been lost during the Babylonian captivity. During the next five centuries the Jews suffered under the yoke of the Medo-Persian, Greek and Roman Empires. Yet, Judah retained its tribal identity up until the first quarter of the first century A.D. In the first quarter of the first century A.D., the Jews were under Roman domination when an unprecedented event occurred. According to Josephus (Antiquities 17:13) around the year A.D. 6-7, the son and successor to King Herod, a man named Herod Archelaus, was dethroned and banished to Vienna, a city of Gaul.8 He was replaced, not by a Jewish king, but by a Roman Procurator named Caponius. The legal power of the Sanhedrin was then immediately restricted.

6 This passage should read, Until Messiah comes to whom belongs the thrown.. Both the Targum and the LXX translated it as a reference to the messiah . the Talmud also refers to the Messiah in Sanhedren 98b. the Midrash considers this as a Messianic reference according to Bereshit Rabbah 98:7 7 the following is taken from Chuck Missler book creator beyond ..... 8 "Wars of the Jews", Book 2, chapter 8

Page 13: 3- The Bloodline - Abraham to Moses

13

With the ascension of Caponius, the Sanhedrin lost their ability to adjudicate capital cases. This was the normal policy toward all the nations under the yoke of the Romans. The province of Judea had, however, been spared from this policy up to this point. However, Caesar Agustus had had enough of the Jews and finally removed the judicial authority from them at the ascension of Caponius. This transfer of power was recorded by Josephus.9 "And now Archelaus' part of Judea was reduced into a province, and Caponius, one of the equestrian order of the Romans, was sent as a procurator, having the power of life and death put into his hands by Caesar!"(Emphasis added) The power of the Sanhedrin to adjudicate capital cases was immediately removed. In the minds of the Jewish leadership, this event signified the removal of the scepter or national identity of the tribe of Judah! If you think that this is a Christian contrivance, think again. Here are several ancient rabbinical references that indicate that the rabbis believed that Genesis 49:10 was referring to the Messiah. In the Targum Onkelos it states: "The transmission of domain shall not cease from the house of Judah, nor the scribe from his children's children, forever, until Messiah comes."10 In the Targum Pseudo-Jonathan it states: "King and rulers shall not cease from the house of Judah...until King Messiah comes"7 The Targum Yerushalmi states: "Kings shall not cease from the house of Judah...until the time of the coming of the King Messiah...to whom all the dominions of the earth shall become subservient"11 In the Babylonian Talmud, Sanhedrin 98b, Rabbi Johanan said: "The world was created for the sake of the Messiah, what is this Messiah's name? The school of Rabbi Shila said 'his name is Shiloh, for it is written; until Shiloh come.'" These amazing commentaries should eliminate any doubt that the Jews that lived prior to

14

the Christian era believed that one of the names of the Messiah was Shiloh. Furthermore, these quotes should eliminate all doubt that the ancient rabbis believed that the Messiah would come before the removal of the scepter from Judah! Woe Unto Us, For Messiah Has Not Appeared! So far we have established that Shiloh is an idiom for the Messiah and that the scepter (that is, the tribal identity, associated with the right to impose capital punishment) had departed from the kingdom of Judah early in the first quarter of the first century. What was the reaction of the Jews when the right to adjudicate capital cases (the jus gladii) was removed from Judah? Did they view the removal of their authority on capital cases as the removal of the scepter from Judah? The answer can be categorically stated as YES! When Archelaus was banished, the power of the Sanhedrin was severely curtailed. Capital cases could no longer be tried by the Sanhedrin. Such cases were now transferred to the Roman Procurator, Caponius. This transfer of power is even mentioned in the Talmud: "A little more than forty years before the destruction of the Temple, the power of pronouncing capital sentences was taken away from the Jews."12 This certainly corresponds to the same event recorded by Josephus we saw earlier. In Antiquities 20:9 Josephus again points out that the Sanhedrin had no authority over capital cases: "After the death of the procurator Festus, when Albinus was about to succeed him, the high priest Ananias considered it a favorable opportunity to assembly the Sanhedrin. He therefore caused James the Brother of Jesus, who was called Christ, and several others, to appear before this hastily assembled council, and pronounced upon them the sentence of death by stoning. All the wise men and strict observers of the law who were at Jerusalem expressed their disapprobation of this act... Some even went to Albinus himself, who had departed to Alexandria, to bring this breach of the law under his observation, and to inform him that Ananius had acted illegally in assembling the Sanhedrin without the Roman authority." This remarkable passage not only mentions Jesus of Nazareth and his brother James as historical figures, but it also declares that the Sanhedrin had no authority to pass the death sentence upon any man!` The jus gladii, the right to impose the death sentence, had been removed. The remaining authority of Judah had been taken away by the Romans in the early years of the first century. The scepter had departed from Judah. Its royal and legal powers were removed; but where was Shiloh? The reaction of the Jews to these monumental events is recorded in the Talmud. Augustin 12 Jerusalem Talmud, Sanhedrin, filoi 24.

Lemann, in his book Jesus before the Sanhedrin, records a statement by Rabbi Rachmon: "When the members of the Sanhedrin found themselves deprived of their right over life and death, a general consternation took possession of them: they covered their heads with ashes, and their bodies with sackcloth, exclaiming: 'Woe unto us for the scepter has departed from Judah and the Messiah has not come'"13 (emphasis added) The scepter was smitten from the hands of the tribe of Judah. The kingdom of Judea, the last remnant of the greatness of Israel, was debased into being merely a part of the province of Syria. While the Jews wept in the streets of Jerusalem, there was growing up in the city of Nazareth the young son of a Jewish carpenter, Jesus of Nazareth. The inescapable conclusion was that Shiloh had come! Only then was the Scepter removed! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ **now we get to the book of Exodus.. What is Moses doing in the land, he is Shepherding, What is Moses doing in the land, he is Shepherding, Yet according to:

Genesis 46:34 - "for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.‖

Moses in no longer in the school of Pharaoh he is in the school of God, and that school is humility he was ready to go for it, there is a pride there they should have known yet , it was not time.. now Moses is 80 we will see is not so eager as at the 40 years, solitude has sobered him, keeping sheep has tamed him he saw difficulties in himself, in the people and in his task , he had already tired once and failed, and now for long years he has been out of touch with his people but while all this was true it was God who now called him to his word , and He makes no mistakes. Horeb means, Desolate/waste land. this is also the word for sini. Later to be known as the mountain of God because it was on this mountain that God gave to Moses the ten commandments. Exodus 19:20 (NKJV) 20 Then the LORD came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the mountain. And the LORD called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. Exodus 24:13–18 (NKJV) 13 So Moses arose with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. 14 And he said to the elders, ―Wait here for us until we come back to you. Indeed, Aaron and Hur are with you. If any man has a difficulty, let him go to them.‖

15 Then Moses went up into the mountain, and a cloud covered the mountain. 16 Now the glory of the LORD rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day He called to Moses out of the midst of the cloud. 17 The sight of the glory of the LORD was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel. ------------------------------------------------------

HOREB [hôrˊĭb] (Heb. ḥōrēḇ, ḥôrēḇ ―wilderness, desolate region‖), MOUNT.† The mountain of God, also called Sinai; critical scholars assign those passages using the name Horeb to the Elohist and Deuteronomist strata of the Pentateuch.

It was here that Moses experienced the theophany of the burning bush (Exod. 3:1), and here God presented to him the terms of his covenant with Israel (e.g., Deut. 4:10, 15; 5:2; cf. Exod. 19–20). It was from this point that the Israelites set forth for Kadesh-barnea (Deut. 1:2, 6, 19). Later, the prophet Elijah received a vision at Mt. Horeb instructing him

to anoint Hazael as king of Syria and Jehu over Israel and to name Elisha as his own successor (1 Kgs. 19:8, 11).

Some scholars consider Horeb to be distinct from Mt. Sinai, perhaps a peak or rocky site in an otherwise low region through which the Israelites wandered. Others view the name as a general designation for the entire chain of mountains in the Sinai peninsula, thus derived from that of a specific mountain; in the same sense, the Hebrews often used the term ―mountain‖ (Heb. hār) to indicate a mountainous region. See SINAI, MOUNT.14 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ REMEMBER LAST TIME - when we see the wording ANGEL OF THE LORD - we want to see who this is talking about. who is talking here. NOTICE Vs. 6 If it was a bush burning, is something that would have caught his attention, but it was not a uncommon sight, this spontaneous combustion. the bush was not being consumed, kept burning and burning. remember Moses was forty years in the area. not a natural thing that is explainable. Fire in the bible speaks of Judgment bush- Hebrew, a thorn bush, comes from the verb to prick. sometimes call a acacia bush. In the the Midrash the burning bush was a rose bush. The significance of this reference is that while the Jewish people may be as difficult as thorns, there nevertheless are "roses" among them, and for the roses alone it is worth God's while to save the nation from tyranny. According to our Sages, the burning bush is also identified as the desert plant blackberries named: Rubus Sanctus. These plants endemic to Sinai and extremely long-lived. It has flowers that resemble small roses and fruit like the raspberry. According to Easton's Bible Dictionary, the burning bush may be the Acacia planet. .Also, when God gave Moses the instructions for building the Tabernacle, he told him to make an ark of acacia wood. The Seneh has also been identified as the Cassia Senna .The Cassia Senna is an Arabian name

and the herb was first brought into use by Arabian physicians.15

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 3 Then Moses said, ―I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.‖4 So when the LORD saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, ―Moses, Moses!‖ And he said, ―Here I am.‖5 Then He said, ―Do not draw near this place. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.‖ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- he has him take off his shoes as a sign that God was near, today in come 'religious' building you take off your shoes, in mosques. similarly you cover your head in some places that are deemed holy by the Jews. we find that throughout Israel . this will become a indicator to Joshua that something is going on .. Josh 5:15 Then the Commander of the LORD‘S army said to Joshua, ―Take your sandal off your foot, for the place where you stand is holy.‖ And Joshua did so. the shoes mentioned here are most likely sandals. In Egypt and the land of Israel the common people generally went barefoot. a person of means would wear sandals outdoors. the sandals accumulated dust and dirt and were therefore removed before entering the house. in a sacred place you would remove your shoes. It is possible that the priest performed their duties barefooted. at least there is no mention of footwear in law. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6 Moreover He said, ―I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.‖ And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God. 7 And the LORD said: ―I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows.8 ―So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.9 ―Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They had been cruelly treated by the Egyptians for several years. a. They were a nation of slaves. b. Treated more like animals than humans. c. They were being abused and beaten. d. They had begun to cry unto God for deliverance.

Matthew 20:25–27 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, ―You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— JOHN THE BAPTIST

John 3:30A ―He must increase, but I must decrease‖ APOSTLE PAUL Early in his ministry, he acknowledged: 1 Corinthians 15:9 ―I am the least of the apostles and do not deserve to be called an apostle‖ middle of his ministry he said Ephesians 3:8 ―I am less than the least of all God‘s people‖ at the end of his ministry her said 1 Timothy 1:15 ―Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst‖

On one occasion when Samuel Brengle was introduced as ―the great Doctor Brengle,‖ he noted in his diary:

If I appear great in their eyes, the Lord is most graciously helping me to see how absolutely nothing I am without Him, and helping me to keep little in my own eyes. He does use me. But I am so concerned that He uses me and that it is not of me the work is done. The axe cannot boast of the trees it has cut down. It could do nothing but for the woodsman. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 12 So He said, ―I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.‖ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -Moses is now 80 years old the time in the wilderness has mellowed him, he is no longer wanting to jump in there and go for it, he did that 40 years earlier, but now he is backpedaling. not wanting to get involved. he has mellowed. The ultimate sign is that you will come back here and he does with all the people. here and worship God.. if GOD SAYS IT .; IT WILL HAPPEN. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 13 Then Moses said to God, ―Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‗The God of your fathers has sent me to you,‘ and they say to me, ‗What is His name?‘ what shall I say to them?‖14 And God said to Moses, ―I AM WHO I AM.‖ And He said, ―Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‗I AM has sent me to you.‘ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- YHWH- This literally means the becoming one., in the Hebrew it is related to the verb "to be" probably speaks of God‘s self-existence, but it means more than that. It usually speaks of His relationship to His people. For example, as Lord, He redeemed them (6:6), was faithful to them (34:5-7), and made a covenant with them (Gen. 15:18). this is carried on to JESUS I will show you in a moment. 11–12 In these verses, the presentation of the tetragrammaton is only introduced. Moses objects, מי אנכי ―Who am I, … that I … that I …?‖ and God answers, ךשי אהי ה עמ ―the point is, I AM with you.‖ Who Moses isc not the question; it is rather, who is with Moses?16 he did not give him a name , he gave him a answer. I AM WITH YOU.. I AM .. he explains it.. This could be translated equally well as "I Will be Who I Will Be." The name YHWH (Yahweh, or Jehovah) is simply derived from the verb "to be." God is the great "I AM" in the sense that each of us is a little "i am." In reading the Gospel of John it is helpful to

note that Jesus used the term "I am" a number of times in the sense of the meaning of Yahweh. For instance He said, "...before Abraham was, I am." (John 8:58)17 ---------------------------------------- The four most popular one-word names are Yahweh (6,800 times); Elohim (2,600 times); Adonai (439 times); and El (238 times). Y-H-W-H. In Hebrew writing there were no vowels. and this HOLY NAME OF God was not to be spoken. today you will see some write G_D or just 'the name' . Orthodox Jews will largely not pronounce the so-called "Ineffable" Name because of a Rabbinic ban on Its pronunciation: "It is forbidden to read the glorious and terrible name as it is written, as the sages said "He that pronounces the name as it is written has no portion in the world to come". Therefore it must be read as if it were written Adonai." 18 so how do we get the name of YHWH to JEHOVAH. we don't. first of all there is no "J" sound in the Hebrew it would be "ya" "The Masoretes, who from about the 6th to the 10th century worked to reproduce the original text of the Hebrew Bible, replaced the vowels of the name YHWH with the vowel signs of the Hebrew word Adonai or Elohim. Thus the artificial name Jehovah (YeHoWaH) came into being."19 honetly this is simply a guess, we dont know how to say the name of God.. "The pronunciation of yhwh as Yahweh is a scholarly guess." 20 Yahweh , Yahova, is all a guess. there one thing that we know about Gods name.. He places his word even above his name.. Psalm 138:2 (NKJV) 2 I will worship toward Your holy temple, And praise Your name For Your lovingkindness and Your truth; For You have magnified Your word above all Your name. THE NAME OF GOD IS HOLY AND YET JESUS TAUGHT US.. TO SAY ABBA FATHER..

Deut.18:15-19: "The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your midst, from your brethren. Him you shall hear, "according to all you desired of the LORD your God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, 'Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, nor let me see this great fire anymore, lest I die.' "And the LORD said to me: 'What they have spoken is good. 'I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. 'And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him."

Jesus claims to be the prophet Moses spoke of that should listen to. Notice that it says they did not want to hear the voice of the Lord anymore or see his glory in Horeb. Then God says he will put his words in a future prophets mouth if they do not listen to his words, God will require it of him."

this is a heated discussion between Jesus and the religious leaders. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I know that you are Abraham's descendants, but you seek to kill Me, because My word

THE CAMP OF ISRAEL

Numbers 2:1-34

God Sets out the camp of Israel….. This is the order ( see Diagram ) note the size of the tribes and where they were placed. The Tabernacle was in the center, Your strength is when God is the center of the camp, what if we all saw God as the center of our lives as they would pitch there tents they would pitch there tents facing the tabernacle, so when you came out of your tent in the morning the first thing you saw was the smoke of the sacrifice in the morning. God is in the midst of his people …. When you see a Map of today, North is at the top. In the ancient world east is at the top. Israel we will see maps and east will be at the top of the map. This was the standard for the past…… Which way was the door of the tabernacle…… east----- Moses and Aaron camped just east of the tabernacle, this was the privileged place. The house of Israel was camped all around the Tabernacle. these were all sub-groups of the tribe of Levites- they were in charge of taking it down moving it and setting it up. Once in place the priest took care of it.

Merari to the north, The structural components, board covered in gold and the polls ect.

Gershon to the west They took care of the external coverings

Kohath to the south. They took care of the internal equipment, the furniture ect. There were in a sense three camps the outer camp was called the camp of Israelites, the middle won was the camp of the Levites, and the innermost one was called the camp of the presence, or Shekinah. 22 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying:2 ―Everyone of the children of Israel shall camp by his own standard, beside the emblems of his father‘s house; they shall camp some distance from the tabernacle of meeting. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- each tribe had a symbol, all twelve. They would camp by there standard. Then you had 3 tribes made up a camp , there were 4 camps of 3 tribes each around the tabernacle……. You had Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun each had a standard but the three or them collective called the camp of Judah. Judah was senior, they camped on the east side you should expect that Judah was the messianic supper guy. The largest in number… There is 3 tribes make up a camp and the camp takes the name of the lead tribe, his standard becomes the rallying point for that tribe…… ( we are going to get in a helicopter before this is over ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3 ―On the east side, toward the rising of the sun, those of the standard of the forces with Judah shall camp according to their armies; and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be the leader of the children of Judah.‖4 And his army was numbered at seventy-four thousand six hundred.5 ―Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar, and Nethanel the son of Zuar shall be the leader of the children of Issachar.‖6 And his army was numbered at fifty-four thousand four hundred.7 ―Then comes the tribe of Zebulun, and Eliab the son of Helon shall be the leader of the children of Zebulun.‖8 And his army was numbered at fifty-seven thousand four hundred.9 ―All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Judah, one hundred and eighty-six thousand four hundred—these shall break camp first. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- these are the same guys we read about in chapter 1.

Forces of Judah-- see the change here, they are all lumped into one. It is a simple thing, yet some real treasures before we get through…… These shall break camp first - this is the marching orders. When you have a group of people of 2-5 million you don‘t just say hey guys follow me, the ones that march first are those on the east side. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10 ―On the south side shall be the standard of the forces with Reuben according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.‖11 And his army was numbered at forty-six thousand five hundred.12 ―Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Simeon, and the leader of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.‖13 And his army was numbered at fifty-nine thousand three hundred.14 ―Then comes the tribe of Gad, and the leader of the children of Gad shall be Eliasaph the son of Reuel.‖15 And his army was numbered at forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.16 ―All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Reuben, one hundred and fifty-one thousand four hundred and fifty—they shall be the second to break camp.17 ―And the tabernacle of meeting shall move out with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps; as they camp, so they shall move out, everyone in his place, by their standards. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Forces of Reuben - this is the leading camp This is the second….. this is ranking, not 12 tribes but 4 camps…… Isa. 6, Eze. 1,10 Rev. 4 We see cherubim has four faces.

Ezekiel 1:10

10 As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle. This is the same four faces on there standards were that of angels. I am not sure that they had read Eze. Not in Moses day….. they have this in common….. Revelation 4:7

7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. -----------------

In chapter 1 we learned about the census. Each Israelite had to know who he was. He also had to know where he belonged. During all these years in the wilderness, the camp positions and the order of their marching were orderly and according to God‘s direction. We are told that they raised standards over their camps. These were banners that were put up over them. Just what was on these banners? Let me quote to you from two great scholars of the Old Testament, Keil and Delitzsch, in their Commentary on the Pentateuch, Volume III: ―Neither the Mosaic law, nor the Old Testament generally gives us any intimation as to the form or character of the standard . According to rabbinical tradition, the standard of Judah bore the figure of a lion, that of Reuben the likeness of a man, or of a man‘s head, that of Ephraim the figure of an ox, and that of Dan the figure of an eagle; so that the four living creatures united in the cherubic forms described by Ezekiel were represented upon these four standards.‖23 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18 ―On the west side shall be the standard of the forces with Ephraim according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.‖19 And his army was numbered at forty thousand five hundred.20 ―Next to him comes the tribe of Manasseh, and the leader of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.‖21 And his army was numbered at thirty-two thousand two hundred.22 ―Then comes the tribe of Benjamin, and the leader of the children of Benjamin shall be Abidan the son of Gideoni.‖23 And his army was numbered at thirty-five thousand four hundred.24 ―All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces with Ephraim, one hundred and eight thousand one hundred—they shall be the third to break camp.25 ―The standard of the forces with Dan shall be on the north side according to their armies, and the leader of the children of Dan shall be Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai.‖26 And his army was numbered at sixty-two thousand seven hundred.27 ―Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Asher, and the leader of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran.‖28 And his army was numbered at forty-one thousand five hundred.29 ―Then comes the tribe of Naphtali, and the leader of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.‖30 And his army was numbered at fifty-three thousand four hundred.31 ―All who were numbered of the forces with Dan, one hundred and fifty-seven thousand six hundred—they shall break camp last, with their standards.‖ 32 These are the ones who were numbered of the children of Israel by their fathers‘ houses. All who were numbered according to their armies of the forces were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty.33 But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.34 Thus the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses; so they camped by their standards and so they broke camp, each one by his family, according to their fathers‘ houses. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you add up the camps….. On the south side ….. 142,450 East ………… 186,400 West ……… 108,100 North……. 157,600 Now you get in a helicopter, look down we see the tabernacle and here are the camps of 600,000 guys not equal sides. East the largest group, and on the west the smallest South and north they are about the same size….. They were instructed very write this down, they can only go so deep, they become a long camp. What is the shape of the camp…. In the center in the camp…… tabernacle, he came and tabernacled among us…. The midrash 24 tells us what each of the sign may have looked like. ( we use the word "may" But the midrash is far more definitive) We are told that each tribal flag was colored according to there stone on Aaron's breast pice. And had there own tribal insignia determined fro some aspect of Jacob's prophecy for them, embroidered in the cent of the flag here's the description:25 24 Bamidbar Rabbah 2.7 25 Midrash Rabbah - Numbers II:7

''' 7. ACCORDING TO THE ENSIGNS (II, 2).7 There were distinguishing signs for each prince; each had a flag and a different colour for every flag, corresponding to the precious stones on the breast8 of Aaron. It was from these that governments1 learned to provide themselves with flags of various colours. Each tribe had its own prince and its flag whose colour corresponded to the colour of its stone. [In Aaron's breast-plate] Reuben's stone was ruby and the colour of his flag was red; and embroidered thereon were mandrakes.2 Simeon's was topaz and his flag was of a green colour; the town of Shechem was embroidered thereon.3 Levi's4 was smaragd and the colour of his flag was a third white, a third black, and a third red; embroidered thereon were the Urim and Thummim.5 Judah's was a carbuncle and the colour of his flag was something like the heavens; embroidered on it was a lion.6 Issachar's was a sapphire and the colour of his flag was black like stibium, and embroidered thereon was the sun and moon, in allusion to the text, And of the children of Issachar, men that had understanding of the times7 (I Chron. XII, 33). Zebulun's was an emerald and the colour of his flag was white,8 with a ship embroidered thereon, in allusion to the text, Zebulun shall dwell at the shore of the sea (Gen. XLIX, 13). Dan's was jacinth and the colour of his flag was similar to sapphire,9 and embroidered on it was a serpent, in allusion to the text, Dan shall be a serpent in the way (Gen. XLIX, 17). Gad's10 was an agate and the colour of his flag was neither white nor black but a blend of black and white; on it was embroidered a camp, in allusion to the text, Gad, a troop shall troop upon him (ib. 19). Naphtali's was an amethyst and the colour of his flag was like clarified wine of a not very deep red; on it was embroidered a hind, in allusion to the text, Naphtali is a hind let loose (ib. 21). Asher's was a beryl and the colour of his flag was like the precious stone with which women adorn themselves; embroidered thereon was an olive-tree, in allusion to the text,As for Asher, his bread shall be fat (ib. 20). Joseph's was an onyx and the colour of his flag was jet black; the embroidered design thereon for both princes, Ephraim and Manasseh, was Egypt, because they were born in Egypt. On the flag of Ephraim was embroidered a bullock, in allusion to the text, His firstling bullock (Deut. XXXIII, 17), which applies to Joshua1 who came from the tribe of Ephraim. On the flag of the tribe of Manasseh was embroidered a wild ox, in allusion to the text, And his horns are the horns of the wild-ox (Deut. XXXIII, 17), which alludes to Gideon son of Joash who came from the tribe of Manasseh.2 Benjamin's was jasper and the colour of his flag was a combination of all the twelve colours; embroidered thereon was a wolf, in allusion to the text, Benjamin is a wolf that raveneth (Gen. XLIX, 27). The reason, then, why it is said, ACCORDING TO THE ENSIGNS is because each prince had his own distinguishing sign. (7) Lit. ‗by signs‘. (8) Heb. ‗heart‘. (1) So Warsaw ed. The Vilna ed. has the singular and ‗the state‘, which might refer to Rome. (2) V. Gen. XXX, 14: And Reuben went tn the days of wheat harvest, and found mandrakes in the field; and cf. Gen. (3) His prowess and his self-sacrifice in the interest of morality were demonstrated at Shechem (cf. Gen. XXXIV, 25 f.). (4) Perhaps the reference to Levi should, with R. Bechaye, be deleted, since he was not included among the twelve tribes (Rad.). (5) Cf. Deut. XXXIII, 9. (6) To which he was likened by Jacob in his final blessings (cf. Gen. XLIX, 9). (7) They were the astronomers and calendar experts. (8) Like silver, symbolical, according to R. Bechaye, of their great wealth; (9) Rad.; they were the great merchants and seafaring traders; v. Rashi on Gen. XLIX, 13. (10) Rad. prefers the reading ‗black‘, adopted by R. Bechaye. (11) Though Naphtali's birth is recorded before Gad's (v. Gen. XXX, 8-1l), Gad precedes Naphtali in the present enumeration of the tribes (see vv. 14, 29) and also in the blessings of both Jacob and Moses (v. Gen. XLIX, 19, 21; Deut. XXXIII, 20, 23). There is consequently no need to assume with Rash, that we have a printer's error here.

35

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Then all the congregation of the children of Israel set out on their journey from the Wilderness of Sin, according to the commandment of the LORD, and camped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.2 Therefore the people contended with Moses, and said, ―Give us water, that we may drink.‖ And Moses said to them, ―Why do you contend with me? Why do you tempt the LORD?‖3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and said, ―Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?‖ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- vs3- first you are going to kill us with hunger now with thirst./ no sooner that God provides the bread that they now begin to complain that He is going to cause them to die of thirst. How quickly we forget what God has done./ This was worse than their murmurings of distrust at Marah (15:24) or in the Desert of Sin (16:2), for here they even quarreled with Moses (17:2) and were about to stone him (v. 4). Such quarreling, Moses said, was putting the LORD to the test (v. 2), that is, they were challenging the LORD or trying His patience (v. 7) rather than trusting Him.26 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4 So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, ―What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me!‖5 And the LORD said to Moses, ―Go on before the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel. Also take in your hand your rod with which you struck the river, and go.6 ―Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.‖ And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.7 So he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contention of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, ―Is the LORD among us or not?‖ -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Moses illustrates what the trusting Christian does in the hour of trial: he turned to the Lord and asked for guidance (James 1:5).27 James 1:5

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But God was patient with His disobedient and grumbling people. He told Moses to take . . . the staff with which he had struck the Nile River (7:20) and to strike a rock at Horeb (17:6). This ―staff of God‖ (4:20; 17:9) was a symbol of power; holding it was a sign of dependence and trust in God. Though Horeb is another name for Mount Sinai, 26Walvoord, John F., and Zuck, Roy B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture Press Publications, Inc.) 1983, 1985. 27Warren W. Israel did not camp at Sinai until later (19:1). However, ―Horeb‖ can also mean the Sinai region. Rephidim was close to Sinai so that the mountain slopes reached there. In Moses‘ striking the rock, the Lord was pleased to satiate His thirsty people with an abundant supply of water. So the Lord provided for them through another miracle. Because the people had tested the Lord there, Moses called the place by two names: Massah (―testing‖) and Meribah (―quarreling‖).28 This request turned into a disrespectful demand, for this reason, Moses named the place Massah or Meribah, which literally means "Test and contention" god was put to the test by contentious people . by naming the place for their behavior , Moses reminded the people for al time , that God was indeed among them and that the way to express their needs ins through prayer, not insolent challenges. ---------------------------------

Numbers 20:1-29

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Then the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came into the Wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people stayed in Kadesh; and Miriam died there and was buried there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We believe it has now been forty years since they left Egypt. Aaron is going to die in chapter 33, in the fifth month, this is four months previous. (Num.33:38-39)

the people abode in Kadesh

What happened the last time they were at Kadesh? (Num.13) It was forty years ago when they had just come out of Egypt, they came up to the border of the Promised Land at Kadesh. Moses had sent out twelve spies, ten of which came back with such a bad report, that the people got discouraged and didn't want to go into God's Promised Land. God promised them forty years of wandering, a time of getting them ready to take the Promised Land.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Now there was no water for the congregation; so they gathered together against Moses and Aaron.3 And the people contended with Moses and spoke, saying: ―If only we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!4 ―Why have you brought up the assembly of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our animals should die here?5 ―And why have you made us come up out of Egypt, to bring us to this evil place? It is not a place of 28Walvoord, John F., and Zuck, Roy B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary, (Wheaton, Illinois: Scripture Press Publications, Inc.) 1983, 1985.

grain or figs or vines or pomegranates; nor is there any water to drink.‖6 So Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, and they fell on their faces. And the glory of the LORD appeared to them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- there was no water for the congregation

Keep in mind that there are close to two million people here. That requires a lot of water to keep alive in a desert! Kadesh is normally a well-watered oasis, but when they arrive this time, it's all dried up.

Sounds like a familiar problem for the people! it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines,...

Of course it's not, you're still in the wilderness dummy! When you're in a wilderness time, don't spend your time complaining about how bad it is, start looking for the lessons you're supposed to be learning, and start learning them! The faster you learn your lessons, the quicker you'll get out of the wilderness. Sometimes the lesson is patience, and be ready, you'll never learn that one overnight!

JAM 1:2-4 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have {its} perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,8 ―Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.‖ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- notice the direction SPEAK TO THE ROCK . --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 9 So Moses took the rod from before the LORD as He commanded him.10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock; and he said to them, ―Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?‖11 Then Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod; and water came out abundantly, and the congregation and their animals drank.12 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, ―Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.‖13 This was the water of Meribah, because the children of Israel contended with the LORD, and He was hallowed among them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

38

Because ye believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel,

Why is God being so harsh on Moses? After all, the water did come out of the rock, the people were satisfied, isn't that enough? 1. Moses disobeyed God

God doesn't always do things the same way twice. I wonder if he was just doing it because that was what worked last time.

That's our tendency: If God works during a special time or place in our lives, we often want to go back and try to duplicate that event so we can see God work again. The problem is that we misunderstand God.

He works because He's God, not because we said some magic words or something. Obeying God doesn't always mean doing the same thing you did before. God desires that we learn to be sensitive to His Spirit and the new things He wants to do and places to take us.

For those in leadership, leadership means having a much tougher standard to follow.

If you are in an influential position, then whatever example you set will probably influence those who look up to you.

JAM 3:1-2 Let not many {of you} become teachers, my brethren, knowing that as such we shall incur a stricter judgment. 2 For we all stumble in many {ways.} If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well.

2. Moses misrepresented God

Moses seems to be acting in anger.

He calls the people "rebels" He strikes the rock, not even once, but twice. Even though at other times, God made it clear that He was angry with the people, it wasn't so here.

to treat me as holy in the sight of the sons of Israel

God is concerned that we don't just think about Him as being holy whenever we're in worship, but also throughout all of our lives, as we are in front of others. We are always setting an example, either a good one or a bad one.

People are watching you to see what this Jesus stuff is all about. Are they going to look at your life and decide, "Hmmm, I guess this Jesus stuff isn't such a big deal anyway".

Page 39: 3- The Bloodline - Abraham to Moses

39

God wanted the people to see that all Moses had to do was speak, and God would graciously supply water. But Moses made it look as if he had to beat someone up to get some water.

3. Moses blew the picture We know that the Rock was Jesus, it represented Him (1Cor.10), and so we know that there's significance in relation to Jesus with these events.

The picture, as God intended it, was supposed to be that Jesus being struck on the cross, and then all who would simply call on Him would be saved. But instead, Moses struck the rock again, blowing the whole imagery.

Moses made it look as if by human strength he could make the water come out, as if by your own actions you could be saved.

God says we are saved by believing, by calling out to Him.

on the backside of Mount Sinai, there is a very peculiar looking rock, 60 feet tall that is split down the middle. When closely examined, one can see that the base and the surrounding area has the appearance of water erosion. From the cleft in the rock and downhill, the sediment is washed away and the rocks are very smooth. Is this not what is recorded for us in the Scriptures? -----

Page 40: 3- The Bloodline - Abraham to Moses

One of the greatest — and most doubted — miracles of the Exodus is the story about God instructing Moses to hit a large rock with his rod, which resulted in a flow of water for the Hebrews to drink from. Near Jabal al-Lawz is a large rock, standing about 60 feet high, split down the middle. The edges of the split and the rock underneath it have become smooth, as if a stream of water had poured forth from the rock, creating a river. Given the annual rainfall in Saudi Arabia and the fact that the erosion is only present on that rock and no other ones in the surrounding area, it‘s hard to find a plausible explanation for this remarkable find.29
