3 Stupidly Simple Reasons Why Most
People’s Photography Does Not Improve by Darren Rowse
I‘m presuming that this article will not
apply to most of us… but after 3
conversations in the last week which
revealed the same photography
problems in 3 different people – I
thought I‘d better jot them down.
Warning: none of this is rocket
science sometimes the basics need to
be said!
1. You don’t Take Your
Camera With You If you don‘t practice using your
camera you‘re unlikely to ever grow
in your understanding of and skill in
photography and if you rarely have it
with you – you‘ll not get that practice.
Does that mean you need to lug your
DSLR and all your cumbersome gear
around with you all the time?
Maybe – I have friends who are never
without their main camera – but if
that‘s just not practical, at least make
sure you have a smaller point and
shoot or even a decent camera phone
with you at all times. While the quality
of the images you take might not be as
great with these cameras – at least
you‘ll be practicing your composition,
thinking about light, color and other
aspects of photography. Cont’d Page 3 . . .

2. You’re Going too Fast Many of us lead life at such a fast pace
that we rarely stop to see the
opportunities right before us to take
wonderful images.
You can carry your camera around
with you 24/7 for the rest of your life
but unless you learn to slow down
and to look at the world a little
differently you may never actually use
it.
As a result – I guess one of the tips I
find myself giving to some that I talk
to is to find ways to slow down – or
at least slow down temporarily to set
aside time to be a bit more intentional
about photography. It might start by
taking a walk with the main objective
of doing some photography but could
also be something bigger like a
weekend away with your camera or
even taking a photography class or
tour.
For me its about building photography
into your daily rhythm and in time it
starts to become a more natural thing
as you get in the habit of seeing life a
little differently.
3. You are Worried what
Others Will Think I‘ve come across quite a few people
lately who suffer from ‗framing
paralysis‘.
They take their camera with them
and they even slow down enough to
see the photographic opportunities
around them – but there‘s just
something that stops them from
lifting their camera up to frame the
shot.
When I dig a little I‘ve found in most
of these instances the person is
simply worried about what others
around them will think if they use
their camera. Will they look stupid?
Will people think that they‘re
photographing them?
Its a feeling I‘ll admit to having myself in the past and when I asked about it
on our Facebook page the other day
it seems that it‘s quite common.
I guess the key to moving through
framing paralysis is to grow your con-
fidence as a photographer. For me
the more photos I took and the more
I began to exercise the discipline of
taking images the easier it got.
Another friend of mine got over his
paralysis by finding a photography
buddy to go out with – two of them
taking shots somehow seemed more
confronting than him doing it alone.
What do You Think?
Of course the above are very simple
things that hold many people back
and there are bound to be others
that readers might have experienced.
I‘d love to hear from you on two
fronts: Cont’d Next Page . . .

3 Stupidly Simple Reasons. . . Cont’d from page 3
1. what other simple things hold you (or other photographers) back from im-
proving?
2. what tips and solutions would you give others facing these problems?
(I‘m looking forward to hearing from you on this! Yes, that’s me - Doug)
Darren Rowse (The above is from a dPs - Digital Photography School publication, issue number
170, on the following website: http://www.digital-photography-school.com/ with Darren
Rowse’s permission.)
The following information and images were contributed by a our new members to be
shared with you.
Sterling Ranne - I got my first camera in my Easter basket ‗73. A Kodak Instamatic and I
took a boatload of pics with it, all snapshots. My father anointed me the family photographer
with duties of photographing the clan during family gatherings (my least favorite type of photog-
raphy - ―smile!‖ <click>)
My next camera was about 5 years later when, in high school, I purchased a SLR, the Canon AT-
1. I outfitted it with zoom lenses, macro lenses, tripods, flash, bells and whistles (well as much as
a high schooler‘s salary would permit) I took classes on my camera, basic photography, and on
b/w darkroom and learned I did not care for the messy darkroom business.
I entered a long dark period call ‗marriage‘ which involved little but cheap digital family pics.
<shudder> The one exception to this period was in 1997 when I learned I would be visiting
Australia in 1999. I learned to dive and purchased a Nikonos IV underwater camera. I sold the
camera right after my trip, but fell in love with underwater photography.
February of 2011 I took a plunge and invested in my second SLR, the Canon T2i. Very different
from my first SLR I am learning that the controls are internal. One doesn‘t reach around and zip
the aperture to where one wants it. One spends 2 minutes looking for the %^#&# control in
the menu and waits for the shot to evaporate. Still, I love the quality of digital and would not
give it up for film.
Since February I have: 1] purchased entry level studio equipment (moonlights, booms, remotes,
even dyed my own backdrops), 2]taken several basic photography classes from a local
photographer, 3] found & listened to most of a photo processing podcast series called ―Meet the
Gimp‖ and 4] found this group. I am interested in learning many types of photography, including,
underwater, macro, & studio and am interested in meeting anyone interested in these.
Currently I use a photo processing program called GIMP, and am interested in meeting anyone in
the group with knowledge of his program. I‘m interested in seeing how Photoshop Elements
works and if the investment in $$$ and time would be worth the leap to the new platform.

Brooke Gorsuch - I love photography! I‘m a newbie and so far I enjoy capturing all
sorts of moments - life, nature, events, etc. I used to work at the YWCA in college and I
remember the Camera Club meeting there so when I moved back to the area, I decided to
check the club out for myself. I‘m excited to learn more about the craft and I‘m sure I will with
the wealth of knowledge from the club members.
I‘m a stay at home mom of twin toddler girls so I don‘t get to photograph as much as I‘d like,
but sometimes they prove to be good test subjects. Actually they‘ve been the biggest inspira-
tion for my photography.
I‘ve attached one recent picture I‘m proud of, in fact this is one I entered in the Zoo Friends
competition.

Eva Ryan - Thank you for your warm welcome! I am excited to join this club and learn
from the friendliest camera group in OKC (I know because I have been attending all I can find).
I found this group on the internet several months ago but wasn‘t able to attend, something al-
ways got in the way. My first night to attend I got hammered by hail on my way to the meeting,
but that didn‘t stop me. Everyone has been very helpful in answering my questions. So I
jumped right in and have entered photos for the July 26 projected image competition. I enjoy
looking at other photographers work - it helps me become better photographer.
I love capturing the outdoors in photographs - if I‘m outdoors with my camera, I‘m enjoying life.
I‘m usually out somewhere every weekend with my camera and hope others will want to join
me in my adventures.
I‘ve recently discovered the close-up version of photography when a friend let me use her
macro lens. I now have a set of close-up filters I am using on my Nikon D5000 with lenses 18-
55 and 55-200. I will be purchasing a set of extension tubes soon because I am having so much
fun with close-up photography.
Even though I have had some kind of camera for as long as I can remember, I never thought of
myself as a photographer and so all I did was snapshots of the family (2 great kids - my son, 28
yr old Marine and my daughter, 25). In the past years I‘ve taken classes now and then, mostly
learning composition and this year learning really how to use my camera. This past year I have
taken photos like never before and loving it! Eva Ryan from Kingfisher

In the introduction to The Best
Camera is the One That's with
You, Chase Jarvis' book of pho-
tographs made over the course
of a year using his cell phone,
he states that as an artist, he
felt more free with the little cam-
era built into his iPhone than he
ever had with other cameras
and that somehow, he had re-
covered an innocence lost and
was able to see the world anew.
It is in this spirit that we arrived
at the idea of the juried exhibi-
tion Can You See Me Now:
Photos Made on Phones run-
ning through October 1. This
exhibit features 34 photos made
on cell phones, each by a differ-
ent artist, that our panel of
judges felt best represented the
use of the cell phone camera.
Can You See Me Now: Photos Made on Phones
On View through Oct 1, 2011
Can You See Me Now: Photos Made on Phones Tues -
Fri: 10am - 5pm and Sat: 10am - 4pm through October
1. Admission is free. For more information about this
exhibition, please visit our website.
