So far, the source of the second wave FMD outbreaks in March – April remains unclear; one of the hypotheses is that the virus could have entered through infected wild boar again from Thrace;

All outbreaks are located nearby or within forests (possible contact between domestic livestock and wildlife);

Analysis of isolates from the Kirovo outbreak (4) made in the EU Reference Laboratory for FMD in Pirbright show that there is no link between the current outbreak in March and the previous outbreaks in January 2011;

Outbreaks 4-8 detected under clinical signs; confirmed PCR positive and NSP negative;

Epidemiological considerations

Implementation of measures for control and eradication of FMD according to Council Directive 2003/85/EC. All susceptible animals (outbreaks 4-8) killed and buried;Killing and burrial of all susceptible animals in Bliznak (9);Control in the 3 km protection and 10 km surveillance zones around the outbreaks pursuant to the Directive.Clinical and epidemiological examinations as well as blood sampling of susceptible animals in the risk villages located in Burgas and the neighbouring to the west Yambol region.Surveillance in wild life (next steps)
