Billets for Filipino Students—8-14th of April
We have been invited to host a group of students from the Philippines.
The group are coming from Ateneo Grade School (one of the most exclusive schools in the Philippines) and consists of 17 young boys aged 10-11 years old and 3 teacher chaperones. These children have travelled internationally before, are fluent in English and come from very good families.
We are wanting to billet the students out to families from the 8th of April - 14th of April. A total of 6 nights. Due to their age, two stu-dents need to go to one home, they can't go alone. Therefore we need 8-9 families. The students will come to school during the day and participate in classes.
If you are interested in billeting two students please contact the school or the classroom teacher. This is a great opportunity to further develop our students as global citizens through understanding and awareness of different cultures.
Athletics
Thank you to all of the parents, caregivers and whanau who helped out on sports day and supported the students throughout the day. Well done to all of the students who gave their best, displayed fair play and made us proud. The champions for each group will be announced next week. Students will find out next Tuesday if they qualified for Eastern Sports.

Oreti River Field Trip
On Tuesday, a note went home about this trip to the Oreti River. This is an opportunity for the students to learn how to test water. We do require a large amount of parent help for this to go ahead and we are holding an information afternoon from 3pm until 4pm with Pat Hoffmann from Environment Southland, who will go through what is happening. It is fine if you are unable to make it, as we can send home information if needed along with a map of where we will be. If we do not have sufficient parent helpers by Monday we may need to cancel this trip.

Caregivers needed for Gore and
surrounding districts
We are looking for people to provide chil-dren and young people in need, a safe, caring and stable home life when they are unable to live with their families. Infor-mation, preparation and ongoing support for this important role is provided. If you are at all interested, or know someone who might be, please call Diane White for a chat on 03 9020312, or toll free on 0508 FAMILY (0508 326 459).
An information evening will be held on Monday 13th March at 5.30pm at Child Youth and Family Office, 24 Traford St, Gore.
Deep Cove Next Thursday there will be infor-mation being sent home about Deep
Cove. This will include information about the gear required (including a list), the raffle fundraiser and also a date for a parent evening. We have
done this successfully over the past few years and this is an informal way to come and ask questions about Deep Cove for parents that are at-
tending. We will also discuss parent roles at camp. If you are interested in coming along as a parent help, you
are more than welcome to attend to listen and see if you are wanting to do this. We are after confirmed num-bers for parents by the end of the
term.
Thank you to those wonderful par-ents who have emailed and/or passed their details on their child’s
teacher. We really appreciate the support, as this is such a special
place to go for our Year 8’s.

The gun goes off…
We were at the line, my face looking to the front. “Ready… Set… Go!” The pistol goes off and we run. I smelled the sweat pouring off my body. I heard the boys cheering us on. I tast-ed the sweetness of my lips clamping together. I saw the finish line only metres away. I pour all my strength in to the last few centimetres. My toe went over the finish line tie last with Alisha; a feeling of disappointment surged through my body. My heart is drumming in my ribcage demand-ing to be let out. I gulped as tears sprung to my eyes, I feel the lump in my throat. Surely I could have done better, I thought no, it wasn’t a mis-take. I shut my eyes and let all my emotions go over me. I opened them and I gave everyone a great big smile because that’s life and stuff happens.

PRIDE Cup—Elis McKenzie
I am proud to be standing here being able to give Elis the Pride Cup. He is the epitome of a role model student at Longford Inter-mediate and I have been lucky enough to teach him for his time here. Elis consistently demonstrates perseverance in all areas of his learning. He is a more than capable aca-demic student as well as a sportsman and he always pushes himself further and further. He will willingly take on feedback to im-prove. He is incredibly resilient and this was evident when even with a fractured wrist, Elis still wanted to make the most of sport and continue to play, even when he knew for a fact he shouldn’t be doing this. Elis is very respectful in the way that he communicates with staff and students alike and is incredibly polite and always opts to do the right thing at the right time. He has a quiet manner about him and now that he feels comfortable within the classroom, he is able to easily voice his ideas politely. Elis is willing to work with any student in the classroom whether it be in a group within the class or with students from other classes. He is support-ive and inclusive and consistently makes sure that no one feels left out. He can always be relied on to make the right decisions at the right time and is always honest in his dealings with others. Elis strives for excellence in all he does on the sports field or in the classroom and this has shown when he has taken part in the Taieri exchange for football, cricket for the school. You are an asset to teach Elis and I look forward to seeing your continue on your learning journey at Longford this year. Keep up the excellent work and you are definitely a deserving recipient of the PRIDE cup this week.Mrs Mitcheson
PRIDE Cup—Jess Horne
It is my absolute pleasure to present the PRIDE cup to Jess Horne. Jess’s honest, reliable and kind nature makes her a valuable member of 16 Kiwi. I had Jess in my class last year, which was an absolute delight. She is a bubbly, positive young lady who goes out of her way to help others. Jess is respectful toward not only teachers and other staff but her peers across the school too. She accepts everyone for who they are and treats them with respect no matter what. She listens to the opinion of others and is willing to accept that each person has a different
viewpoint. When new students start at Longford, Jess does her best to make them feel welcome. Jess always strives for excellence in everything she does. This was evident last year when she worked hard to produce a convincing speech that not only won her the year 7 title but convinced many of us that messy rooms are in fact a good thing. Jess’s work ethic aides in her ability to complete set work within a given time frame consistently and to a high stand-ard she can be proud of. Time and time again Jess has persevered to juggle out of school commit-ments, school work and extra- curricular activities. Jess likes to push herself to be the very best she can be. This is evident in her taking on librarian duties as well as being an active member of the enviro group in school last year. With each of these activi-ties, she prioritised their importance and met the requirements with diligence. Jess has a fabulous sense of humour which is appreciated by both teachers and her peers. She is always seen with a Smile on her face and a witty joke to tell. enjoys a challenge and can work with anyone to solve prob-lems. She definitely isn’t one to give up easily, even if she doesn’t succeed the first time she will contin-ue until she does. Jess, you are a fine young lady who has grown so much since your first day at Longford last year. As you grow older you will undoubtedly exceed all of your expectations and goals you set for yourself. You always strive to be the very best you can be and your work ethic, along with your positive attitude is something others should aspire to obtain. You are without a doubt a worthy recipient for the PRIDE cup award. Con-gratulations. Miss Campbell
Mufti Day—On Friday the 10th of March the School Council have or-ganised a Mufti Day to support the Breakfast Club. There is no theme for this Mufti Day. Students are asked to please bring a gold coin donation. Any donations would be greatly appreciated by the Breakfast Club.
