While the search for a new Zoo Administrator is underway, I am stepping in to deliver this quick message to make sure you know that our exciting and rewarding work of running a Zoo continues. We don’t want you to think progress has slowed down at Reid Park Zoo!

In this publication you will read about new exhibit renovations and the plans to welcome new species to the Zoo. Although we do not yet know who will fill the office left empty when Susan Basford retired, we do know what will fill one empty space in the Zoo - brown bears! In this publication you can read more about how we are working with wildlife experts who rescue and place wild bears in need of a home.

The other animals coming soon are black and white ruffed lemurs, a guanaco, and black-neck swans. The lemurs will come to us as part of a breeding recommendation through a Species Survival Plan® (SSP), in partnership with other AZA accredited institutions. We

look forward to working with this critically endangered species. The guanaco will be a companion for the llama currently on exhibit, and black-necked swans will join them – making for a dynamic and active exhibit in South America.

We can report another change related to a Species Survival Plan® breeding recommendation - the female tapir is pregnant! Recently confirmed by ultrasound, this is an exciting and welcome pregnancy!

For updates on these exciting changes, visit our newly refreshed website. The site now features a blog for up to date information, a new page for the live elephant web cams, and fabulous features and resources just for teachers.

So although one office at the Zoo is temporarily dark, know that Zoo staff members are still hard at work to bring you, our members, wonderful Zoo exhibits and experiences.

This March, Reid Park Zoological Society participated in the first Arizona Gives Day, a day Arizonans came together to make donations to their local nonprofits. On March 20th, Reid Park Zoo supporters went online, connected with a cause they cared about, and made tax-deductible donations to help bring Brown Bears to their Zoo. We thank you for every $5, $10, and $100 donation you gave that day!

Playful Sundzu, the Zoo’s 2-year-old elephant, cracked his left tusk -- most likely while wrestling with his older brother. While he was not in any pain, the Keepers and vets wanted to address this issue sooner rather than later, so bigger problems didn’t develop. Elephant experts from across the country came to help Sundzu in March. After examining an x-ray, they removed a small piece of tusk, inserted a plug, and sealed the the end with resin to prevent infection.

Santiago the tamandua demonstrates how handy his prehensile tail is during a training presentation. ‘Prehensile’ means that their tails are capable of grasping, which is important for tamanduas who spend the majority of their days high in the treetops of South America.

Meet the Zoo’s two new capybara! This 3-year-old brother and sister pair made their debut on exhibit this spring, and have been delighting visitors by swimming right up to the viewing window. The capybara, native to South America, is the world’s largest rodent.

Last fall, some Zoo and Society staff and board members spent time on an African safari with Conservationist/Naturalist Isaac Lazuro Muro, seen here with Yebonga the rhino. He visited Reid Park Zoo as part of the Conservation Lecture Series.

Male Malayan tiger “Baheem” got a clean bill of health on his recent medical exam, and a Zoo Keeper got a rare chance to safely measure her hand next to his paw.

Punga, one of five elephants living at the Zoo, got a surprise on Saturday, March 16th when Zoo Keepers presented him with cardboard “piñatas” to break open and play with.

Flowing Wells Zoo Club volunteers assembled these piñatas for the elephants under the supervision of Zoo Keepers, filling plain cardboard boxes with enriching toys and tasty treats, then wrapping the boxes in paper.

The Zoo will join forces with local micro brewers from Craft Tucson to bring you the very first ever Brew at the Zoo on Saturday, June 15th, 2013 from 6-9pm. Enjoy samples of craft beer, listen to great music, and participate in some fun competitive activities—all while surrounded by exotic animals.

When you arrive, you’ll receive a commemorative glass to sample IPAs, seasonal brews, lagers, stouts, and more from some of the finest craft beer brewers in Arizona. The Zoofari Café will feature pub fare from around the world at reasonable prices, Zoo educators will introduce you to live demonstration animals, and local band Cooper Meza will round out the party with a performance on the main stage.

For the best deal, purchase your tickets in advance. Zoo members pay $30 and non-members pay $40. Prices increase $10 at the door. Cabs will be available, or bring your designated driver for just $20. This is a 21 and over event--IDs will be checked at the entrance.

And what’s better than drinking beer for a good cause? Funds raised at this year’s event will help support the Zoo’s campaign to bring rescued brown bears to Tucson.

Discover what’s sure to become one of Tucson’s most popular parties! Visit reidparkzoo.org or call 520-881-4753 for more information and to purchase tickets.

A special thank you goes to Craft Tucson for helping coordinate the brewers for this event!

It is always hard to say goodbye to a species we have supported through care and conservation for many years. Recently the Zoo’s polar bear passed away. Although we miss her, this

is also an exciting time to consider important ways we can contribute to meaningful breeding efforts and holding needs for new species. Soon,

renovations will begin to welcome a new species - brown bears!

We have become aware of an annual need to relocate wild brown bears to reliable animal care facilities.

When conflict between humans and wild bears becomes a safety issue, the bears must sometimes be removed from parks

or other populated areas. On other occasions, young cubs are orphaned and unable to survive on their own. We have decided to move

forward with renovating the polar bear habitat to participate in a brown bear rescue program.

We have looked carefully at the existing habitat and spoken with our colleagues at other accredited institutions that house brown bears. The new exhibit will include a stream and new shallow water areas. The current wall dividing the two halves of the exhibit will be opened up - connecting the space into one large brown bear habitat.

Reid Park Zoo will not solve the bear problem by accepting 2-3 bears from the wild. Brown bears typically live to be over 20 years old, so these will likely be the only wild bears the Zoo will accept for a long time. However, bears housed in Tucson and at other accredited zoos can provide an opportunity for us to share their story and inform guests about how we can all help future generations of bears, with the goal of reducing bear-human conflicts in the future.

DID YOU KNOW...... Brown Bears can weigh up to 1,500 pounds, stand ten feet tall, and run more than 30 miles an hour?
