    Functions of the blood

    Blood performs two major functions:1.Transport through the body of

    oxygen and carbon dioxide

    food molecules (glucose, lipids,amino acids)

    ions (e.g., Na+, Ca2+ , HCO3)

    wastes (e.g. : urea)

    hormones Heat ( maintain the body

    temperature at 37oC)

    Functions of the blood

    Blood performs two major functions:

    2. Defense of the body against infectionsand other foreign materials. All the White

    blood cells participate in these defenses.

    Plasma

    Liquid part of the blood

    A pale yellowish liquid

    90 % of it is water. The rest aredissolved subs. which include

    nutrients, Proteins & mineral salts

    Main function of plasma are :

    to transport nutrients to tissues

    to remove waste products from tissues

    to distribute hormones, enzymes , antibodiesetc

    to distribute heat energy to all parts of the

    body

    without nucleus Contain haemoglobin (a redpigment)

    produced in the bone marrow

    Lifespan :- 4 months

    Function :- to transport oxygen from the lungs to all partsof the body ( in the form of oxyhaemoglobin)

    cell fragments produced by large cells in thebone marrow (sum-sum tulang).

    No definite shape, without a nucleus

    Lifespan :- a few hrs to nine days

    Function : to clot blood in a wound to prevent the lossof an excessive amount of blood by releasing aclotting factors

    2. Must be tested to ensure that it is freefrom disease like HIV , Hepatitis B & C , STDsuch as syphilis

    4.Can be stored at 5oC for 10 days inrefrigerator (Blood bank)
