50. Briefly highlight the contributions of the department in generating new knowledge, basic
or applied. The Department has been able to generate some novel strains of microorganisms having
22
potential applications in industry. Department has also isolated more than 50 Quinolone drug resistance bacteria, the 16S-rRNA gene sequences for them have been successfully submitted to NCBI Gene bank. The study would pave a way for understanding the drug resistance patterns among population of this region. Another study on breast cancer biomarkers has yielded some interesting leads and six 18S-rRNA gene sequences have been successfully submitted to NCBI. Following gene sequences have been assigned gene accession numbers: S. No.

51. Detail five major Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Challenges (SWOC) of the
department. Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Threats • Wide scope of
Biotechnology in Industries and Academics.
• High quality education system with latest equipments and effective mode of teaching including PPT presentations, guest lectures, animations etc.
• Wide link with other disciplines i.e. Interdisciplinary.
• Eminent faculty members with good
• Lack of public awareness about the value of the subject.
• The department
has not been able to receive any grant from UGC/AICTE for the projects due to non deceleration of NAAC result of the University.
• Role of biotechnology discipline with the increase in the number of diseases and antimicrobial resistance among antibiotics (Super bug), environmental degradation, depletion of fossil fuels and food insecurity.
• Great potential for research and innovation for the welfare of mankind.
• Improving social impact i.e. use of probiotics, neutraceutical, recombinant proteins, antioxidants,
• Declining trends of students opting for biology in 11th and 12th standard.
• Less number of R&D centres in India.
• Expensive chemicals and instruments.
• Lack of proper research funding to the institutes.
25
research profile and publications. Department has a research Journal “Current Trends in Biotechnology and Chemical Research which is currently into its 4th Volume with indexing in many reputed data bases.
• MOUs with recognized institutes to promote research i.e. National Dairy Research Institute Karnal; Directorate of wheat research (ICAR) Karnal, Central Soil Salinity Research institute, Karnal (Haryana), Bhopal Memorial Hospital & Research Centre (BMHRC) Bhopal, India.
biofuels, edible vaccines, hybrid varieties of plants and animals etc
• Scope of self employment in various fields i.e. Mushroom cultivation, organic farming, vermicomposting, silage production, SCP, Tissue culturing, biogas production etc.
• Great scope in different industries i.e. Dairy industry, Pharmaceutical industry, Alcoholic and Non- alcoholic beverages industry,Agriculture, Hospitals, Research and Development centres.
• Mushrooming of different research institutes or universities in nearby areas.
• Less faith on private institutes as compared to government institutions for higher studies.
52. Future plans of the department
• Research projects pertaining to the thrust areas of research in the department will be submitted for financial support from various funding agencies such as DBT, DST, DAE and DRDO.
• Proposal to start new courses such as M.Sc. Medical Biotechnology and Agriculture Biotechnology.
• To organize National/International conferences for which proposal will be submitted to Department of Science & Technology, UGC and other funding agencies for financial support.
• For developing the infrastructure for research in the department, proposals will be submitted to funding agencies under various programmes including FIST.
• Departmental library would be strengthened with the availability of more number of books relevant to Biotechnology and its allied subjects.
• Biotechnology graduates (UG & PG) will be adequately trained for their soft skills
26
relevant to Biotechnology and Bioinformatics so that more and more companies visit the campus.
• To specifically enhance the output based learning for the maximal benefit of the students.
• To include a variety of learning resources including workshops, e-learning, learning from mentors and coaches and learning from experiences.
• The department would like to propose for a School of Biological Sciences in the near future.
• Need for multidisciplinary R& D Cell. • Expert lectures by industrialists and more industrial visits of students to enhance
their knowledge regarding employment in industry.
