Remember: Communication can always be improved in teams, and as managers, don’t be afraid to reach out and be more transparent in your communication. Give feedback, be available and communicate what you expect from your employees. When communication is clear and eective, employees will feel more comfortable reaching out to you.

HAVE CLEAR WORK POLICIES.Along with communication, managers need to develop clear work policies for their employees to make sure the work still gets accomplished. Employees need to know what is expected of them.

Through meetings and one-on-one chats, learn what both you and your employee expect and desire from the remote work agreement. Then, plan a work policy that reflects your previous discussions to ensure engagement and results. By instilling a sense of trust and responsibility, employees will feel more loyal to managers and the work.

HIRE PEOPLE CAPABLE OF REMOTE WORK.Lastly, as a manager, it’s important to have people on your team capable of remote work. These applicants need to meet not only your company goals and mission, but be an active solution to your remote team.

When hiring, have a process that looks into applicants’

characteristics such as communication skills, independence,

self-awareness, values and training/education. Lori McLeese,

HR director for Automattic, explains:

If during the trial process a candidate needs a lot of

hand-holding and waits for specific instructions before

moving forward on work, they probably won’t be a good

fit [for remote work].
