After four consecutive sessions, the Granfondo International Cycling Festival has become a highly influential sports event in Yunnan Province. Photo by Zhang Cheng As pointed out by President Xi Jin- ping in his report to the 19 th CPC Nation- al Congress, the era of Socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new phase at this new and historic junc- ture in China’s development. Standing on a new historical horizon, how will the Chinese nation, which has stood up and grown rich, become strong and influence the world in the future? In August this year, Ipsos, the French market advisory body, conducted a survey among people in 26 countries, including China, the United States, the United Kingdom and Japan. The survey showed that 87 percent of Chinese people are optimistic about their country’s development future, ranking first among the countries surveyed. This is interpreted by many foreign media outlets as a type of “positive energy” for the development of a rapidly changing world. The China model and experience is also reflected in its anti-corruption cam- paign. This effort has deeply impressed Simon Khaya Moyo, National Chair- man of the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) Zimbabwe’s ruling party. He is also Zimbawe’s Minister of Media, Infor- mation and Broadcasting. “ We admire the CPC’s anti-corruption campaign, because we are also combating cor- ruption in Zimbabwe. It is not an easy task. We should learn from China’s anti-corruption experience. In partic- ular, our anti-corruption officials have a lot to learn. ” he said. The report to the 19 th CPC National Congress stressed that the CPC is a political party seeking happiness for all people while struggling to promote the overall progress of mankind. Vandee Boutthasavong, Laotian Ambassador to China, expressed her approval, saying, “The CPC loves peace, pays great attention to development issues and advocates for win-win cooperative efforts. The country pursues an inde- pendent foreign policy of peace and has made contributions to the peace- ful development of the world. The CPC stressess that China’s develop- ment is inseparable from regional and global peace, development and stabil- ity. The CPC’s path of development has provided beneficial experience for the development of Laos and other countries across the world.” In response to the challenges posed by trade protectionism, anti-globalisation and rising populist thought in today’s world, the CPC reiterated the concept of global governance through common development. Additionally, the CPC promotes growth through joint consul- tation and has proposed a foreign policy of opening up to the outside world in terms of economic development, active- ly developing global partnerships and promoting the building of a community of shared future for all of mankind. Laurie Pearcey, assistant president of the University of New South Wales in Aus- tralia, believes that China will propel all countries toward a participatory process of global integration. (Staff Reporters) . Recently, the 5 th Asia Micro Film Festival and the 7 th Lincang Border Trade Fair opened in the city of Lin- cang in Yunnan Province. The 5 th Asia Micro Film Festival had two themes, “Integrating into the Belt and Road Initiative, opening up for win-win cooperation” and “Asia Wind, China Dream and Lincang Love”. In addition to the opening ceremonies, a summit forum, a news conference and the Golden Begonia awards party, hosts staged the Five Years of Forging Ahead - Lincang Development Achievements Exhibition, the First Lincang Concert and joint China-Myanmar Art Perfor- mances. The 7 th Lincang Border Trade Fair attracted a total of 300 enterprises from 11 countries and regions, includ- ing Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam and Laos. China to make greater contributions to the new world era Micro Film Festival and Lincang Border Trade Fair held BY ZHANG YUNBI CHINA STORY The second volume of the book Xi Jin- ping: The Governance of China has been published in both Chinese and English language editions. The new publication brings together 99 of Xi’s speeches, conversations, instruc- tions and letters between Aug 18, 2014, and Sept 29 of this year, Xinhua News Agency said a few days ago. The first volume, published in September 2014, has had a total circulation of 6.5 million copies in 23 languages in more than 160 countries and regions as of September , according to the Beijing-based Foreign Languages Press, the book’s publisher. Since the publication of the first volume, Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has put forward a range of groundbreaking new concepts, thoughts and strategies that enrich the Party’s theories. In the second volume, the articles included are categorized into 17 topics. The use of 29 photos of Xi as well as some annotations make it more reader friendly. The new volume shows the development and main concepts of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. It also highlights the wisdom and solutions offered by the Party for developing a community with a shared future for mankind and for promoting peace and development, according to Xinhua. Chen Mingming, former Chinese ambassador to Sweden, said the simultaneous publication of Chinese and English language editions of the second volume is a key gesture of China for boosting communication with the outside world and sharing its recipes for success. Also, the thematic arrangement of the articles is inviting and could better attract readers as it helps them find topics they are interested in, Chen said. Dong Guanpeng, dean of the Academy of Media and Public Affairs at Communication University of China, said the latest publication “marks the confidence of both the country and the Party as well as their strong sense of duty for boosting global peace and development”. The two volumes of Xi’s book offer a summary of China’s evolving, unique model for a developing economy, and officials in many countries have said they expect to learn from China and use China’s lessons as a reference, Dong said. The second volume “shows the consistent efforts of China in translating theories into practice, provides a new calling card for China and offers a new introductory manual for foreigners”, Dong said. Other ideas include the historic changes and undertakings of the Party and the state since the 18 th CPC National Congress, the entry of Socialism with Chi- nese characteristics into a New Era, and the principal contradictions facing Chinese society today. “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era”: The report to the 19 th CPC National Congress makes clear the main ideas through eight major points while vowing to faithfully implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era in fourteen ways. “Remarkable five years”: The report to the 19 th CPC National Congress points out that the five years since the 18 th Nation- al Congress have been truly remarkable in terms of the development of the Party and the country. The achievements of the past five years have touched every area and broken new ground, and the changes in China have been profound and funda- mental. These historic changes have had wide-ranging effects and far-reaching im- pact on the development of the Party and the country. “Principal contradiction”: The report to the 19 th CPC National Congress pointed out that Socialism with Chinese charac- teristics has entered a new era, and the principal contradiction now facing Chinese society is the contradiction between unbal- anced and inadequate development and the people’s ever-growing need for better lives.
