Liturgy Corner

TODAY AT THE 10AM AND NOON MASSES

we welcome into our community the

NEOPHYTES (those who were baptized at the Easter Vigil)

CANDIDATES IN FULL COMMUNION (those previously baptized receiving the

sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist) Having completed the third step of Christian Initiation, the celebration of the sacraments, they are beginning the final period of the RCIA, the period of post baptismal catechesis or mystagogy. This is a time for the commu-nity and the neophytes and candidates together to grow deeper in their grasp of the paschal mystery and in making it part of their lives through meditation on the Gospel, sharing in the Eucharist, and doing works of charity. To strengthen the neophytes and candidates as they begin to walk in newness of life, the community of the faithful, their godparents and sponsors, and their parish priest should give them thoughtful and friendly help. The neophytes and candidates are, as the term mystagogy suggest, introduced into a fuller and more effective understanding of the mysteries through the Gospel message they have learned and above all through their experiences of the sacraments they have received. All Christians are called are called to mystagogy which is Greek meaning “entering more deeply into the mys-tery,” which means we are all to enter into “catechesis and theology drawn from and aimed at promoting a deeper experience of God.” (Source: Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults Study Edition) The Easter season is just beginning and we are all called to reflect on the spiritual growth we have experi-enced from our Lenten journey and challenge ourselves not to fall back into our old habits but to reflection on the mysteries God has revealed to us. Here are some questions that might help.

How am I deepening my understanding of the mys-

teries of the Gospels and teachings of the Church?

What do I need to make this happen?

How am I going to “enter more deeply into the mystery” of the up coming Sunday’s of the Easter season [no, Easter is not one day) and the Solemnity of Pentecost, Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity and the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ?

Adult Enrichment Happenings Please contact Pat at 503-654-5449 or [email protected] if you have ideas for

Adult Enrichment. Did you miss the Quick Journey Through the Bible: an 8 week bible study class? Those who attend the fall and winter class ex-pressed how helpful it was to their under-standing of the bible especially making the readings at Mass more meaningful. Would you like to attend? I would like to offer anoth-er session either in June and July. Parents, think about enriching your scriptural knowledge after the kids get out of school. I would love to hear from you. This class can be offered either day or evening.

I have calendared the 24 week session The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. It will begin September 11th and run through March 19th with breaks for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This session will be held on Thursday evenings. I will also offer the ses-sion during the day on Wednesday. Do not let the 24 weeks deter you from attending, as the sessions are easily to make up.

Low Gluten Host (0.01%) St. John’s has purchased a new low gluten host. If you need to receive the Blessed Eu-charist with this low gluten host please follow these procedures at Mass. At communion time arrange yourself to be the last person in the priest line. When it is your turn to receive tell the priest you need a low gluten host and he will go to the tabernacle to get you one and then give you communion. If you have ques-tions please call Pat at the parish office.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! We have some very wonderful morning Mass people who straighten the pews every Monday morn-ing and other days as needed. Could all of us help make our church look pre-sentable by straightening up the Mass books in your pew and throwing away any unneces-sary stray papers. Thanks you for helping take care of God's House.

Planting a Mary Garden A down-to-earth devotion!

Mary Gardens were a common sight for 15oo years (until the Reformation). Sim-ple devotion to Mary inspired monks, peasants and kings to grow gardens in Mary’s honor – and the custom lives on today, even in America. Come find out

how to be part of this down to earth devotion! When: May 14, 2014, at 7pm Where: Jordan Room in the Parish Center Extras: Door prizes: *Raffle (proceeds going to the Roof Fund) *Brightly colored child-size rake, shovel, gloves, and garden kneeler – a perfect gift for a young Mary gardener! Tickets will be $2 (or any generous donation)

CHURCH CANDLES! We are having a problem in the use & care of our votive candles. Par-ents if your child would like to light a candle we require they be assisted by an adult and taught the proper reason for lighting a candle and the proper way to light the candle. If the candles are not straight in the glass holder the glass breaks and this is unsafe for all besides being expensive. Share the following with your children so they will develop a very religious approach to the church candles and grow in their prayer life. Thank you for your help in support in caring for our parish church. Church Candles: As Catholic we have a beautiful tradition of lighting votive candles and vigil candles. Votive lights (Latin votum, “vow”) and

vigil lights (Latin vigilia, “waiting” or “watching”) are symbolic of two purposes of prayers. The former is associated with seeking some favor from the Lord, Mary, or a saint in return, usually, for some promise or vow. The candle is burned, as were sacrifices in ancient times. The latter, as its name “vigil” indicates, accompanies prayer of attention or waiting. (from Catholic Cus-toms and Traditions by Greg Dues

We are always in need of cooking oil, small containers of oatmeal/hot cereal, canned tomatoes, canned fruit, potatoes, peanut butter, commercial jellies & jam, jiffy muffin mixes and heart soups and Top Ramen. Our donation barrel is located in the back of church (NO CLOTHES PLEASE) and our boxes will be out on Saturday & Sunday ,May 34d & 4th. Thank you for your generous help to these families in need! My God bless you!

April 27, 2014 2nd Sunday of Easter Sunday

More from The Liturgy Corner Thanks for the good questions from the Easter Vigil. First question was “Why did the hosts that the RCIA candidates receive come from the back of Church carried by Deacon Jim with a candle?” Deacon Jim went to bring to the altar the remaining consecrated hosts from Holy Thursday.

Second question: “What was the symbolism of the different colors of linens that were used to dress the altar?” If you noticed the colors were green, purple, red and white— these are the liturgical colors of the Church. The Vigil Mass is considered the greatest of Christian feasts. Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the “Feast of Feasts, the Solemnity of Solemnities, just as the Eucharist is the “Sacrament of Sacraments’’ (1169, Catechism). “The Resurrection of Jesus is the crowning truth of our faith in Christ, a faith believed and lived as the central truth by the first Christian community; handed on as fundamental by tradition; established by the documents of the New Testament; and preached as an essential part of the Paschal mystery along with the Cross.(638b, Catechism)

………………… Invitation to All Parishioners

Reception for Newly Received RCIA Neophytes Sunday, April 27, 2014 Immediately after the 10:00am and 12:00 noon Masses

In the parish center

Your presence is requested at a welcoming reception for the neophytes, those who came into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil.

Please come and meet them in person. Refreshments (cake, coffee, and donuts) will be served.

Show them what a welcoming parish community St. John’s is!

When Catholics are baptized the Christian community welcomes them "with great joy." Today at the 10am English and the Noon Spanish Masses, we, the people of St. John's, welcome "with great joy" the following people into our parish family:

Kimberly Bailey, Aundrea Jacobs, Kylie Baker, Yobani Andrade Lopez, Abraham Vega, Ana Karen Perez Calderon, Sara Frazier, Tara Olsen. Ernesto Pacheco, Jon Tribbett, Jose Banjorquez, Richard Campos, Jesus Rodriguez Garcia, Montsenat Perez, Jessica Perez

~~~~~~~~~~~~
THANK YOU, to all who helped make the Triduum and Easter Celebrations so beautiful and meaningful. To our priests and deacons, the Art and Environment committee and the many who helped move rocks and hang butterflies and banners, the RCIA team and folks, ushers for helping with extra duties, Servers for their many hours of training and service, Lectors and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist and a special thanks to the choir and John Payne and the other music folks for the beautiful music, Randy and Patrick for physical labor or moving and setting up for the various celebrations, and the Audio/Visual team for helping us see it all. All was done for the glory of God!
As a faith community, we come together to honor and pray for our loved ones who left
their pilgrimage here on earth.
There will be a Mass of Remembrance on Saturday May 3rd 2014 at 8:30 am. The
Rite of Remembrance will begin before the final blessing.
There will be a reception in the Parish Center follow the Memorial Mass.
Please let us know if you will be joining us, or for any questions, please e-mail or call
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who
have died so that you may not grieve as others who have no hope. For since we
believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring
with him those who have died.
