I find it hard to believe half of 2019 is now history. Someone once said, “Time flies by when you’re having fun.” I can attest to that based on the events we’ve already enjoyed this year, and I hope that’s been true for you, as well. April brought an annual favorite, Festival d’Avion, followed by our May business meeting in Pinehurst in preparation for the Sandhills Motoring Festival over Memorial Day weekend. Most recently, Triangle members participated in Rally for the Rescue Mission. You will find details of these events in this newsletter. Moving ahead, I’m looking forward to our Members Appreciation Luncheon July 20 at Maggiano’s “Little Italy” at the Streets of Southpoint (mall) in Durham. We will be honoring members who have reached five-year membership milestones of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, etcetera, in the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. If you are one of our members who has reached one of these milestones, I hope that you will join us. The weekend of August 23-25 brings the annual Shelton Vineyard’s Mercedes Car Show. This event, held on the vineyards’ shaded lawns, is very laid back and relaxing. Amenities include a restaurant, wine showroom, and discount rate at the nearby Hampton Inn for event goers. Group dinners and a leisurely drive along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway have become traditional favorites for Triangle members attending this event with the car show taking top billing on Saturday. Memorial Day weekend brought hundreds of car owners and enthusiasts to the heart of Village of Pinehurst to enjoy a spectacular array of 125 European and exotic cars on display. From Friday’s opening informal car show to Sunday’s concours there were multiple-choice events including a road rally, leisurely backroads drive, historic village tour, restoration shop tour, tapas and wine walk, and group dinners. The Sunday awards dinner was attended by 159 people who, in addition to enjoying the first-class buffet, were entertained by Sotheby’s Ramsey Potts who had worked tirelessly throughout the concours interviewing classic cars buffs. Sandhills Motoring Festival (SMF), in only its second year, is cosponsored by MBCA Triangle Section and Sandhills Porsche Club, and by any measure 2019’s event was a huge success. !

By Chris Smith Hagerty Youth Judging was on hand for the second Annual Sandhills Motoring Festival. There were nine youth judges with four returning from 2018. After gathering at the MBCA tent to go over the rules of judging

and passing out their official Hagerty gear, they judged five cars in all: a 1994 Ferrari 348TS, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL, a 2000 Porsche Boxster Clubsport, a 1964 Porsche 356C, and a 1957 Jaguar D Type. The cars were judged in five different categories on a scale of 1 to 5, and each youth judge also asked engaging questions of the car owners. The youth judges did an excellent job in calculating their scores and with their keen eye came up with the final placing. They were also interviewed by Master of Ceremonies Ramsey Potts from RM Sotheby's on their favorite cars. The award for 1st place went to the 2000 Porsche Boxster Clubsport owned by Marvin Waters, 2nd place to the 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL owned by John Byrne, and 3rd place to the 1964 Porsche 356C owned by Steve Gaddy. We look forward to having the youth judges return for SMF 2020.!

Tom Holderfield, (second from left) owner of Mercedes-Benz of Fayetteville which is a sponsor of Triangle Section and Sandhills Motoring Festival, asked to become a MBCA Triangle member during Sandhills Motoring Festival. A delighted Steve Redwine, Triangle past president, congratulates Tom along with Triangle President Bill Faison, left. MBCA National President Gene Jurick, who traveled from Texas to attend SMF, also was on hand to congratulate the new member.

A Visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame Museum in Charlotte By Rob VanDewoestine

The NASCAR Museum is in a very modern building in downtown Charlotte and the weather on Saturday, Logistics were pretty simple with a large parking garage right next to the museum. Triangle President Bill Faison had arranged for museum entry and a guide to take us to the various displays. The main hall provides a visual history of the evolution of cars and the increase of banking on tracks to allow higher speeds through corners.

There are two places on the ramp where one can step up onto the track. It was very difficult to just stand there without holding onto the railings for support when the banking gets to be over 30 degrees.

There are many displays showing the people and vehicles who started and grew this class of racing over the decades. There are extensive video displays of races from the past and the trophies associated with them. If you go through each display in detail, it would be easy to spend a day at the museum.

For information about tours: nascarhall.com

The highlight of the tour is the opportunity to “drive” a race car on a virtual track. Our tour guide knew enough to take us there first before the area became crowded. Eight race cars are set up as though racing. Each car has two positions equipped with a video display and steering wheel along with brake and accelerator pedals. The wheel also has paddle shifters with 4 gears and a reset button for when you crash (a frequent event) that puts the driver back in the pit in a replacement car. The racing computer in each car is linked to the other cars so that you are actually racing against the people in your group and can see their cars on your screen. Speeds and lap times are posted on another display at the end of the race. This is the same system that is used to train people who would like to race professionally. Triangle’s Alan Goodman achieved the fastest lap time in the virtual race and was awarded “The Mercedes (coffee) Cup.” !

The central room upstairs is the Hall of Fame itself. Cars associated with the last 5 inductees are in the hall along with biographical information on the owners or drivers. Past inductees have a position around the walls with pictures, videos and material on their careers.

CAROLINA EXOTIC CAR CLUB Unique by any measure By Rob VanDewoestine

Members of the Triangle Section joined car owners from other clubs for a Cars and Coffee event at the Carolina Exotic Car Club May 11. The club, located in a facility on Glen Royal Road in Raleigh, combines the functions of a social club with vehicle storage and maintenance. There are two climate-controlled main buildings as well as a row of garage bays in a third building at the rear. There is a lounge just inside the entrance door with the first car storage area to the right. Many of the cars at the facility are exotic European models but also there are some VWs and a scattering of American cars. It is not often that you see cars displayed on Persian rugs. This area held about 40 cars. Décor is “industrial chic” as evidenced by the unique coffee maker (below) sliding door leading into the shop area. The second building held about 40 more cars. Carolina Exotic Car Club is a great place to see a wide variety of vehicles or to store a car under well controlled conditions.!

Note the impressive number of interesting vehicles driven to the Cars and Coffee event.

Visitors were surprised to see this vintage bi-wing suspended overhead in the main building.
