Sklar is proud to present its new line ofarthroscopy instruments, featuring dual safety pinsand an innovative spring system that prevents tipbreakage even during the most intricate procedures.

The knurled screw at the junction of the instru-ment’s shaft and handle, contains the innovativespring system. Pressure applied to the handleadvances a wire within the instrument shaft, pushingthe top jaw down. As the jaws bite into meniscus, they meet resistancefrom the wire. When this pressure becomes toogreat, the spring mechanism allows the handle toclose, but not the jaws. When the pressure decreases, function returns to normal.

Trouble shooting

Corrosion

Problem: Debris and residue in box locks, serrations and ratchets.

Solution: Serrations, box locks and ratchetsshould be carefully cleaned andrinsed. A soft bristle brush iseffective in these difficult areas.

Problem: Moisture remaining on the instru-ments within the sterile wrappedpacks; excessive moisture in auto-clave during sterilization and ter-mination of cycle.

Solution: Preheat autoclave, drying timecannot be accelerated, open auto-clave door slightly. Routinelyinspect valves.Malfunctioningvalves can precipitate corrosion.

Problem: Some local water supplies containexcessive quantities of alkali. Thiscan manifest itself by depositingcorrosive matter on the instru-ments.

Solution: It is generally accepted that colddistilled or demineralized water beused during sterilization. An alter-native is to use the local watersupply, while instituting a programof preventive maintenance.Carefully clean surfaces withSKLAR KLEEN™, using SKLARPOLISH™ to remove difficult stainsand SKLAR LUBE™ forproper lubrication.

Pitting

Problem: Instruments are inevitably exposed to chemical com-pounds that initiate pitting. The most common are salinesolutions and blood.

Solution: It is essential that instruments be rinsed with distilled ordemineralized water and then cleaned routinely.

Problem: Some Non-Sklar detergents contain a chloride or have anacid base. If rinsing is not thorough, the residual deter-gent can precipitate pitting. Hydrochloric acid can beformed by the combination of chloride in the cleaner andsteam, causing the instrument to pit.

Solution: Evaluate detergents without a chloride base. SKLARKLEEN is recommended.

Problem: Instruments may be pitted when the detergent used hasan excessively high pH. If instruments are not rinsedthoroughly, and then autoclaved, the heat increases theeffect of the solution on the instruments.

Solution: Use only detergents specifically developed for instrumentcleaning. Sklar Kleen products are pH balanced.

Brownish Stain

Problem: This stain is more obvious on dull finish instruments. Most likely, it is a deposit of chromium oxide. The thinhard layer protects stainless steel from corrosion precipi-tated by the atmosphere. The brownish film (sometimesdull blue) occurs naturally when stainless is heated.Occasionally this stain can be traced to the sterilizer.Improper cleaning compounds could contain polyphos-phates that cause the copper components in the sterilizerto be deposited by electrolytic action on the stainlesssteel instruments.

Solution: Water supply to autoclave should be cold and demineral-ized. Use the correct amount of SKLAR KLEEN as recom-mended for best results.

Bluish Gray StainsProblem: Cold sterilizing solutions.

Solution: In the preparation of the solution make certain the manu-facturer’s directions are followed accurately. To minimizediscoloration use distilled water and add a rust inhibitor.Using the solution beyond recommended time limitationswill cause the solution to become corrosive.

Trouble shooting

Rust DepositProblem: Sterilizing instruments of different metals in the

same cycle will cause rusting. An electrolytic actioncarries the carbon particles from the exposed metaland deposits them on the stainless steel instruments.

The rapid oxidation of molecules results in a surfacefilm of rust.

Solution: The ideal technique would be to sterilize the twotypes of instruments separately. It is recommendedthat chrome plated instruments that indicate signs of peeling or flaking be replaced with stainless steelinstruments.

Problem: The rust film on the surface of stainless steel instru-ments can be caused by chemicals in the detergent.Excess amounts of iron or other minerals from thelocal water supply may cause the rust deposits.

Solution: It is recommended that instruments be rinsed withdistilled or demineralized water. Surface rust can beremoved by light buffing or an application of SKLARPOLISH™.

Light and Dark Colored SpotsProblem: Spotting caused by slow evaporation of water drops

identified with the mineral content of the water.

Solution: Eliminate water droplets by adhering to autoclavemanufacturer’s operating instructions. Autoclavedoor should not be opened until steam has beencompletely vented.

No Steel is Truly “Stainless”It’s a fact that so-called stainless

steel is subject to both water-spottingand staining. However what manypeople identify as a “rust” problemusually turns out to be something else.

Most often the problem is actuallya stain caused by a surface deposit. These deposits appear in a variety ofcolors depending upon the type ofdeposit involved. Once the cause isfound and eliminated, most of the timethe problem quickly diminishes ordisappears completely.

As you probably know, stainlesssteel is ideally suited for the surgicalsuite because it is rust resistant, it can behoned to an extremely sharp edge orfine point, and it can be hardened tomaintain the delicate, yet precise, requirements of the surgeon. But it isthis hardenable quality – the amount ofcarbon used during the manufacturingprocess – coupled with harsh chemicalsand improper care that renders stainlesssteel susceptible to corrosion.
