2nd EARLI and JURE 2013 Conference Newsletter
Dear EARLI and JURE 2013 conference delegate,
In less than a month, you will pack your bags and travel to Munich for the EARLI and JURE
2013 conference! We as organisers look very much forward to meeting you in Munich and to
having a fantastic conference with you.
In this second conference newsletter, we want to give you
valuable and practical information on many aspects of the
EARLI and JURE 2013 conference organisation.
First, allow us to introduce you to somebody: Please meet
Jule and Earol, the two guys on the left! They are two young
researchers who will attend their first ever JURE and EARLI
conference in Munich. Throughout the conference
programme book, you will find ten illustrations which will
show you some of the funny, weird and happy moments
they are experiencing during their conference week in
Munich.
The illustrations featuring Jule and Earol have been created
by Julia Gruber, a local artist from Munich. They will be on
sale in the conference book exhibition as postcards and
prints. Besides, Mrs. Gruber will also be present at the book exhibition at certain times.
Welcome to Bavaria! Welcome to Munich!
Is it your first time in Munich? If yes, you have chosen a very good time to come! Fingers
crossed, the weather will hopefully be warm and dry, but not too hot anymore in the end of
August.
During your time in Munich, we recommend you rely on the public transportation system
(MVV) to take you around town swiftly and safely. As their pricing system is a bit
complicated, one option is to walk up to an MVV-information-booth in order to learn what is
the optimal ticket for your stay in Munich. Alternatively, check our practical travel information
page or follow this link to a pdf-file on what ticket is the right one for you.
2
As it might concern many of you, here is how to get from the airport to the city centre:
The easiest way is to take the “S-Bahn”. To get there, just follow the green “S”-
signs at the airport. Any train leaving from the airport goes to the centre. You can
e.g. purchase a single airport-centre-ticket which costs 10,40€ (To learn about
other day or partner ticket options, ask at the information booth of the local
transportation company MVV). The ride to the centre takes about 40 minutes.
For a plan of the whole Munich public transportation system, please also see our Practical
travel information webpage.
For many more practical tips on sightseeing, shopping and spending time in Munich, we
recommend our practical guide! It gathers many tips and recommendations, carefully
selected by the members of the EARLI 2013 local organising committee and will shortly be
available here.
The conference venue
As you will already know, the EARLI 2013 conference will be held at the main building of the
TUM in downtown Munich (Arcisstr. 21, 80333 München). All conference activities, including
the opening reception, will take place within an area of 200 times 250 meters side length. So,
short walking distances are guaranteed!
As our main campus buildings are a bit tricky to navigate at
some corners, we hope our conference wayfinding system helps
you find your ways through the conference (see image on the
left). Our system divides the conference venue into six color-
areas. These will correspond with the naming of the conference
rooms. E.g., all red rooms start with “r”, “g” stands for green, like
e.g. in g_1200. In this way, finding a specific room will be easy
as you don’t have to search the whole map for your room, but
only the relevant colour area.
An open WLAN network named “Con” will available on site at the
EARLI 2013. It will cover 99% of the conference area, some
bandwidth problems might be experienced in the following
conference rooms: y_1350, y_1355, y_2370, p_4170 and p_4170A. If your presentation is
scheduled in one of these rooms, please make sure to download online-content you want to
present during your talk beforehand!
The scientific conference programme
The EARLI 2013 conference programme book currently is in print. However, there are still
programme-changes occurring which consequentially will not be included in the printed
programme anymore. So, we recommend you do one of the following things to be up to
speed regarding the programme:
3
Firstly, use the EARLI2013-webpage to navigate the conference programme. All latest
changes are guaranteed to be implemented there. You can also download the conference
programme as pdf on the homepage. An updated version reflecting all changes will be re-
uploaded briefly before the conference.
Secondly, download the EARLI2013 smartphone-app which will be available for iPhone and
Android soon. If you download the app very briefly before the conference, you will get the
most current version of the programme.
Thirdly, take note of the leaflet inserted in your conference book as well as the boards
besides the conference information desk which will inform you about the latest changes.
Also, please check if you have been assigned as chairperson in some session! Just click
here and enter your last name or mail-address to find out.
For those of you who present a poster at the EARLI conference and look for some advice on
how to make it informative and good-looking, check out these guidelines our colleagues from
the JURE have put together.
Speaking of JURE: Don’t miss the best of JURE session in EARLI SESSION B0, Tuesday
27, 13:30-15:00h! It will showcase the best three papers from this year’s JURE pre-
conference.
Besides, there will soon be a document available from the EARLI 2013-webpage which
contains all abstracts. We hope to get it online soon. Until then, please be aware that you
can access all abstracts via our parallel sessions page (just click “view” besides the
contribution of interest).
The EARLI conference social programme
Maybe even more important than all the serious science stuff is the conference social
programme!
There are still Gala Dinner-dinner tickets available! If you want to experience an
unforgettable evening in a typical Bavarian atmosphere, we recommend you get yourself
one. Those of you who own a Dirndl or a Lederhosen (i.e., traditional Bavarian clothes), we
warmly invite you to wear these for the Gala Dinner! For everybody else, smart casual is the
way to dress. You can order your gala dinner tickets by mailing to [email protected].
Besides, there are still seats available for young researchers in the lunch with professors-
sessions. These sessions take place during lunchtime on 27 and 28 August. Click here to
learn more and join in.

Dear JURE conference delegate,
1. The conference venue
As we have announced in the last newsletter, the JURE 2013 pre-conference will be held in
the new TUM School of Education building in downtown Munich (Marsstraße. 20-22, 80335

http://www.earli2013.org/media/documents/Getting_there.pdf
All JURE presentations will take place in the first floor of this building (see image on the left).
Our system divides the presentation area into four colour-areas to give you a better
overview. Registration, coffee and lunch will take place in the sixth floor (see image on the
right). For your convenience, we have created a way-finding system to help you finding all
important spots (such as the registration and info desk, your rooms and the catering area).
You can either use the stairs or the elevators to commute between the two levels.
5
You can access the internet using our open WLAN network named “Con”. In case you don’t
have your own internet-compatible device with you, there will be computers available for you
at the info desk to do some last minute email checking.

pre-conference includes a poster audience award. This means, you as participants are asked
6
to act as a jury and cast your vote for the best poster during the conference. Please refer to
