With the month of March just around the corner, it’s time to finalize plans for the club’s 2nd Annual Cheetah Run held in honor of a long-term member who made a difference in the lives of oth-ers. Norbert Korzeniewski joined Longview Running Club in the late 1980’s. After join-ing, he began training regu-larly and accumulated some impressive race times. The President’s Paragraph Enough about me…With the month of March quickly approach-ing I would like each of you to reflect back on the memories you have of our dear friend Norbert “Cheetah” Korzeniewski. Chee-tah was a very special runner to the members of the club and I’d like you to consider what you can do to help make our run an even bigger success than last year. We had over 150 participants and expect an even larger turnout this year! To date we only have 3 sponsors! We can use anyone and everyone’s help! My thanks to everyone that has already stepped up and volunteered for this wonderful event!!

I also want you to know our officers are hard at work! Sandy Maddox (VP) is interested in any suggestions you have about club organization and is hard at work keeping the website up-to-date.

Steve Sansom (Club Run Dir.) is busy taking the clock to various races, keeping it charged, and keeping plenty of club ribbons on hand. David Weaver (Treas.) can answer any questions you have regarding finances; Melanie Hum-phrey (Sec.) is building a data-base for our membership as well as putting together this wonderful newsletter!! Thank You to all officers for doing such an out-standing job as our club grows and communication between members is becoming more and more important!!

This is the perfect time of year to think about and set those fitness goals you have been putting off! So take some time and set some goals that can help you achieve a better 2009! I am looking forward to seeing what this year brings us here at the Longview Running Club!!!

Leslie Stelpflug

Well I hope everyone is hav-ing a fine 2009 so far!! I hope you can tell by this, our second club newsletter, that your officers are working together to make this club year one that leaves you inspired, encouraged, and reaching new levels in your running. As far as reaching a new level in running, I have reached an all new level in my running…For you that do not know…I am expecting!! I’m now 12 weeks into my pregnancy, with my due date coming late this summer on August 8th!!! I do hope to be like fellow member Eloise Lambright who ran a 5K the week prior to giving birth to Millie…I do plan on attending and running all club runs but ,do to my competitive nature, will give up on extracurricular running till after the baby is born…My ultimate goal is to run the Houston Marathon in 2010, which is six months after the baby is born!!

The heart of the runner has been a keen interest of scientists for over a century. One great question has been whether run-ning guaranteed cardiovascular health and protection from heart attacks and death. This series of articles will present some evidence for and against this notion. In 1992, Dr. Haskell studied the coronary arteries of middle-age runners vs. sedentary indi-viduals. The coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle itself. In healthy people the coro-nary arteries are capable of sup-plying several times as much blood as the heart requires. If they are not able to supply this blood the result is chest pain (angina), reduced exercise ca-pacity, and possibly a heart at-tack (MI).

Dr. Haskell compared the inside diameter of coronary ar-teries of runners vs. sedentary individuals at rest and found no differences. But Dr. Haskell knew that arteries are not static, they dilate and constrict in re-sponse to blood flow demands. When the heart rate increases, coronary arteries dilate, allowing more blood to reach the heart muscle (myocardium). So he administered nitroglycerine to these individuals and repeated his measurements. Nitroglycer-ine causes the smooth muscle around the coronary arteries to relax thus allowing more blood flow, and it is used to relieve chest pain. Under the influence of nitroglycerine, big differences were seen between runners and sedentary people. The coronary arteries of the runners dilated to

about twice the cross sectional area, allowing about eight times the blood flow! The take home message here is that runners (and proba-bly anyone who does regular aerobic training) is much less likely to suffer shortages of coro-nary blood flow in times of stress, and is much less likely to suffer heart attacks as a result. You are doing the right thing by continu-ing to run! Keep running. Matt Owings, M.S. Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist

attempt, I didn’t expect to have a strong run. But with all the train-ing behind me, advice from veter-ans, prayer and encouragement; I did, however, expect to feel confident. Instead, my stomach was a ball of nerves, my legs were achy and weak and in the face of a brutal and relentless wind I could only cling to an in-tense determination to finish what I’d started. I knew that finish line was out there some-where and if I just kept moving forward, I would get there! And get there I did with a smile at the finish in 4:59:37. In spite of how miserable I felt during the race – it was an awesome experience. Just get-ting to the starting line injury free was a small miracle and four months of training taught me a lot about myself. I appreciate the USAFITLongview group for all their encouragement! They were my partners in craziness!! Surely, sane people do not head out Saturday after Saturday at 4am for 12, 14, 16, 19 and 21 mile long runs! I do enjoy run-ning early but have to admit at times Saturdays were a test for

me AND a testament to the level of commitment necessary for such a distance. I had the help and support of my husband and children during training and on race day! And I cannot forget to mention the countless spectators in Dallas who shouted my name and encouraged me as I ran - sometimes shuffled - by them. Total strangers did that for me…..unforgettable. And when my husband, Lex, wrapped his arms around me at the finish line, we both had tears in our eyes. That’s a memory I’ll treasure forever! Another marathon is on the horizon for me, Lord willing! For now I am taking some time to bask in this great sense of ac-complishment and thankfulness I feel! I also have a deep respect for all you runners out there who have run and keep on running with such passion! Melanie Humphrey

I ran a marathon on Decem-ber 14, 2008. Even though I have a medal (and pictures) to prove it, I still can’t believe I actu-ally did that. It was the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life and a great personal victory! I started running simply be-cause I needed to lose weight in 2000. I joined the running club five years later with hopes of taking my running to the next level: average 10-15 miles per week. A 5K was the longest distance I’d ever run. Marathon was not even a word in my vo-cabulary! Now, it can be said that running has most definitely gotten into my blood and 2008 was THE “year of running” for me. In February, I ran my first Half Marathon (Austin). In Au-gust, I decided to go for the gusto and run a December Marathon! So in November, I squeezed in another Half (San Antonio) with my twin; and one month later toed the line in Dallas on Decem-ber 14th! I don’t feel that I ran as well as I should have. For my first

I live at Lake Cherokee with my husband Jamie and two sons, Nate (12) and Zach (4). I really enjoy working out and keeping fit. One of my favorite fitness activities is the “Boot Camp” experience. But, I dis-covered my love for running a couple of years ago when I took part in the LRC/ParkeWay 5K Fun Run held in 2007. Since then, I have been hooked! Currently, my short term goals include increasing dis-tance, endurance and shortening my finish time. For the long term, I have a desire to run a

Half Marathon, complete a Tri-athlon and eventually run a Full Marathon. I’ll up tempo on my training as summer approaches in order to be ready to compete this next fall!!!! I have been a member of the LRC for a year and have truly enjoyed the new friendships and camaraderie. I am excited about assisting Leslie and Melanie with the website and the running club as a whole. My priorities as an officer include boosting member-ship and making this next Chee-tah Run even bigger than last year! I look forward to serving

as your Vice President and I am always open to new ideas! Thank you for allowing me the privilege! And just keep running! Sandy Maddox
