Conference Synopsis

Junior doctors and medical students receive little

formal training on how to choose a career pathway.

A career in surgery is attractive to many, making

surgery one of the most competitive specialties.

However, there are a number of basic questions that are

never really fully answered for most junior trainees.

For example:

• What factors should a junior trainee consider when deciding if

a surgical career is the correct choice for them?

• What assumptions about the life as a surgeon are actually true?

• What makes a successful and fulfilled surgical career?

• What if the surgical career turns out to be different to what

was hoped?

A ‘Career in Surgery’ conference brings together higher surgical

trainees from the different surgical specialties to share insights

of realities of a surgical career in the modern NHS. The objectives

of the conference are to help delegates make more informed

decisions about their future careers an optimise their preparations

for application for surgery.

The application for surgery is like a campaign. The key to success is

preparation and planning, which should ideally start early. The CiS

conference has allocated a significant proportion of time towards

discussions on selection process for surgery and how to be

equipped for it. The day comprises of talks, small group sessions

and Q&A sessions.

The conference is awarded 6 CPD points by The Royal College of

Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The conference fees includes lunch and refreshments throughout

the day and a certificate.
