BY: DR. R. PLETSCH

Parents are the firstand most importantteachers of their children, this is a statement oftenheard, but seldom livedup to. If the governmentreally believed this, whydo they constantly makemoves that call for lessparent involvement andmore government inter-ference. Examples includegiving all free lunch andbreakfast and then tellingthe schools what they canserve and even what stu-dents who bring their ownlunch can bring; extend-ing the school year tomandate Kindergartenand offer free education tothree and four year olds. Some say Pre-K is nowneeded because of all thesingle parents and fami-lies that have two work-ers, they need the free daycare. However, when ap-plying, the parent thatworks are often not eligi-ble for the program. Thenthey added hours but thehours go to longer recess, longer lunch. There aredozens other such activi-ties that have been man-dated that I and many ofyou did as a parent. Weare letting our childrenthink they need the gov-ernment and can't be self-sufficient. Thegovernment must givethem a raise. Most of usearned our own raises. During the Christmasseason, you as a parentshould look at what youare losing culturally andreligiously during thisseason. We must be PC,and say Seasons Greet-ings, instead of MerryChristmas, or even usethe X to cross out Christ. It has gone unnoticed bymany that they havechanged BC, which meansBefore Christ, to BCE,meaning Before the Com-mon Era and don't use ADat all, which meant theyear of the Lord, Anno Do-mini. Things like thisslowly erode your familytraditions. We begin thinking thatthis is normal and acceptit, but go visit a "Redstate", the stores stillhave Merry Christmas, sodo the museums and pub-lic buildings. Teachers

have a lot of leeway inteaching customs thistime of the year becausecourts have always ruledyou can teach about cul-tures, those in and not inyour school. There aremany public schools inthis area who have LosPosadas, which strictlyspeaking is a religious cel-ebration, but is consideredcultural. If your familycelebrates the Epiphanyor the Feast of the ThreeKings on January 6th, itcan be talked about inschool, but some staffmembers are not thatbrave. Make sure youteach it if it is part of yourcustoms. As part of the Christ-mas season, when Itaught in the elementaryschools, we went to seethe trees at The Museumof Science and Industry, which is still a great fam-ily or school activity, showing cultures of manycountries. We also wouldgo to the Planetarium tosee the scientific explana-tion of the Star of Bethle-hem. This show is nolonger part of the pro-gramming at the Plane-tarium. When I askedthem why, they simplysaid people over us madethat decision, and, ofcourse, I got no reply fromthose over their heads.Parents and educatorsplease think about thesesituations. ___________________
