What is the simplest definition of prayer? It is - simply having a conversation with God. Why should we

want to pray to God? Well, just as in a normal relationship with another person, having a conversation

with that person is the way we keep in contact with that person. This is how that person gets to know us

better and likewise, we get to know him/her better. Accordingly, the purpose of prayer is to get to know

God better and He gets to know us better. As you know, in the Catholic Tradition of Prayer we have four

types of prayer: adoration, contrition, petition, and thanksgiving. Let us look at each one separately.

ADORATION: In this form of prayer we are praising

God for being God as Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

CONTRITION: In this form of prayer we are asking for forgiveness. Just as we

do on the human realm when we have done something that we should not

have done, we ask for forgiveness. We do the same with our God. Just as in

the human relationship, our friendship is restored; so too in our relationship

with God. This can be done two ways: simply asking forgiveness or

celebrating forgiveness in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession).

PETITION: This takes the form of asking for something that we want. At times this may seem to be the more favorable type of

prayer. Just as we may ask our parents for something, we also ask God for things. Just as our parents may say yes or no, so

too does God. When the answer is no, we may feel that He has not heard our prayer, but like a good parent who would never

give us anything bad; so too God. Instead, He will always give us what we truly need in any particular situation. He knows

what we may be praying for would bring us harm rather than good and so the answer becomes NO.

THANKSGIVING: Just as we say thanks when we have received a gift or a compliment; we say thanks to our God for the

favors that we have received from Him.

If you look closely each of these prayers are simply reflections of what we do for one another on a daily basis.

Let us see how these prayer forms are reflected in two of the readings in today’s Mass. From the Book of Exodus we see

Moses with his hands held high (a symbol of prayer). As long as his hands were held high the Israelites were winning and

soon as they began to droop, the Israelites lost. So Aaron and Hur held his hands upright. Sometimes our prayers don’t get

answered in the time frame that we want but they always are answered. Then in the Gospel story of the woman and the

crooked judge, one can see the persistence of prayer and also see the petition aspect. Let us continue to see the importance

of prayer in our life and continue to use it to get to know God on a daily basis. God Bless, Fr. Ray

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

St. Bernard/ St. Francis are now collecting non-perishable food in support of the Brad-ford Salvation Army Holiday food boxes!

They make boxes for distribution before Thanksgiving and then also supply food boxes and meals for the Christmas holiday. They are counting on your generosity to help again. Items such as boxed or instant potatoes, canned or readymade gravy, cranberry sauce, boxed stuffing and no-bake style desserts are always needed. Any non-perishable canned or boxed ready-to make meal type items are appreciated. Cash donations welcome! Checks should be made out to the Salvation Army.

Argument Tip #2: Don't get unduly "historical" in a marital argument. Child Protection and Creating Safe Environ-ments- Bullying Prevention Month: Relational bul-lying is unwarranted, persistent, unwelcome behavior in the form of criticism, isolation, or fabricated allegations that can damage relationships. Examples include social exclusion (“You can’t be with us”), spreading rumors (“Did you hear…?”), and withholding friendship (“I won’t be your friend if you…”). Though relational bullying can often seem ambig-uous to outside observers and often garners less attention than physical bullying or verbal bullying, it should not be discounted simply as normal, adolescent behavior. In fact, several recent studies suggest relational bullying is more strongly related to emotional distress and teen depression than any other form of bullying. CONFESSIONS: St. Bernard — Saturdays from 4:30 to 5 pm before 5:15 mass, Thursday before First Friday from 4:30 to 5 pm. St. Francis — After 9 am mass on Saturdays. Private appointments may be made by calling the Parish Office (362-6825).

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM (REP) Students not attending Catholic school should be enrolled in REP programs. St. Bernard, St. Francis and OMPH Religious Education programs are combined. Grades 1 through 7 meet on Sunday mornings at 9 am at St. Bernard in Fr. Gallina Social Center and grades 8, 9, 10 & 11(Confirmation) meet at St. Francis in G. Carlton Ritchie Hall at 5:15 pm on Sunday. Both programs begin in September.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA): We welcome all inquiries about the Catholic faith. This process begins in the fall of the year. Please call the Parish Office for further information.

MEMBERSHIP: All Baptized Catholics should be registered, practicing and supporting members of a Parish. Only properly registered members appear on our parish list and are eligible to receive the benefits of parish membership for sacraments, and educational opportunities (including tuition assistance) at our Catholic School. Each parishioner is called upon to practice good stewardship of time, talent and treasure. If you are not currently receiving envelopes, you may not be registered. Call the Parish Office - we would love to meet you!

MARRIAGE: Couples need to contact a priest at least six months before their wedding. Registered and active participation needs to be considered before marriage.

PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK: Please call the Parish Office to request the Sacrament of the Sick for family members who are seriously ill. Communion for the sick is taken to the hospital, nursing homes, and the home-bound on a regular basis.

BAPTISM: Both parents must attend the Pre-Baptism Preparation Program. Please call the St. Bernard Parish Office for dates and times of upcoming class. Baptisms are scheduled after completing the program. Call the Parish Office to schedule the class and baptism. Godparents must be at least 16, confirmed and active, registered members of their parish.
