School Support Staff Recognition Week This week is School Support Staff Recognition Week. It is a time where we celebrate all our support staff for their contributions to the smooth running of our Queensland schools. There are more than 35,000 school support staff working across 1241 Queensland State Schools. We would like to thank all our Support Staff for the important work they do at Coolum State School. We would not be able to achieve the great outcomes we do for Coolum students without their tireless efforts each and every day. Thank you again for your invaluable contributions to Coolum State School. (Pat Cavanagh)

Japanese Speech Contest Last weekend students from Years 4-6 represented our school in the Sunshine Coast Japanese Speech Contest held at the Sunshine Coast University. This event provided an opportunity for our students to showcase their language skills against students from state and private schools from across the coast. Congratulations to all members of the
Coolum team for their stellar efforts as
they demonstrated their appreciation of
Japanese language and culture.

Tournament of the Minds Well done to the two groups who performed on Sunday in the Regional Tournament of the Minds Competition. The Scribbler team and The GLEMMO team competed against 15 other schools, at the Sunshine Coast University - a total of 47 teams. Parents and Grandparents were all amazed at the level of responsibility, commitment and enthusiasm of the students. The performances were a delight to watch and very entertaining. Tournament of the Minds is a great opportunity for students to develop confidence in public speaking, develop creative thinking skills and teamwork. Hope to see you there next year. News from 5P Last week 5P had the opportunity to visit the Gympie Gold mine,
as part of our History unit on the Gold Rush Era. While no
students struck it big when panning for gold, we did gain a
wealth of knowledge about the history of gold mining and gained
an insight to what life was like during colonial times. So far this
term we have broadened our understanding of the impact of the
Gold Rush on Australia and learnt what life was like in this time.
We as a class could not help but reflect on how great
life is today compared to colonial times. This
prompted us to share some of the things we are
thankful for that early settlers did not have the luxury
of owning or experiencing:
Technology because you can text your friends
now but back then if your friend lived in
another country you couldn’t talk to them - Rylee
A scooter to do tricks and ride on it- Joel
Technology so I can keep in contact with family very far away -Tilly
A working and stable economy - Elliott
Access to food and clean water - Leilani
Technology so I can tell the time and keep in contact with friends and family ,modern
medicine and fair treatment of animals- Edie
My dog Green Bean and my 7 cats, because without them I would be lonely and
depressed- Olive
Technology so that I can keep in touch with my family- Coco
Internet, diversity, transport and food- Hallam
Technology so I can be satisfied when bored and so I can keep in contact with friends and
family - Lara
We don’t have to hunt for gold, we work for it- Keelan
I am thankful to own a my cat -Jake
I am thankful that we have food, internet, housing and Five nights at Freddies- Taj
Pets- Matilda
Modern Medicine and modern day transport - Mya
Pets and having a car – Amelie

Sports Update
Soccer News Last Friday 23 August, our Junior Boys Soccer team travelled to Brisbane to compete in the finals of the 2019 South East Queensland Primary Schools Championship. The boys had a very narrow loss to Albany Creek SS in their first game, before going down to a very strong Toowoomba Grammar School in their other match. The team played with great spirit and were well supported by a large group of parents and families who made the trip down. I would like to commend the boys on their behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the whole competition; they can certainly hold their heads high as the Sunshine Coast Champions for 2019! (Jason Quinn)
Cricket Last Friday, students from Coolum State School had the opportunity to participate in the Cricket Blast School Cup at Tewantin Noosa Cricket Club. We had two teams participate in the Pool A & B competitions on the day. Our pool B team had a tough day of competition, with most of our players only picking up a cricket bat for the first time. The inexperience of our Pool B team did not dampen their spirits; they had a great day of cricket against some tough competition. The exuberant Coolum B came away with a convincing win scoring over 170 runs and taking five wickets in their innings. Unfortunately, they lost their next two matches but placed 4th overall for the day. Our pool A team put on an entertaining display of cricket, racking up an average of 200 runs per innings by taking full advantage of the double runs rule for playing the ball straight. Our bowlers left most teams scoreless during their spell and our fielding display was nothing short of world class. Our Pool A team won all their games for the day but unfortunately came second as it came down to a runs scored decision. Overall, it was a superb day of cricket with our Coolum Students having a positive attitude and displaying great sportsmanship. (Paul Prokopuk)
Hockey
Harvey (6A) has just returned with a bronze medal from the National 12
Years Schoolboys Hockey Championships in Bendigo. As part of the 12
Years Qld Schoolboys Hockey Team, Harvey played against all states and
territories over five days in freezing conditions - on the last day he woke up
to -1 degrees and frost all over the field. It was an incredible experience
and not only has Harvey learnt a lot about Hockey but also had a great
time making many new friends. Harvey sends a big thank you to the P&C
for providing financial support. (Provided by Tracey Jackson)
Karate What a great effort from Liam (5S) who attended the 2019 Karate accomplishments last weekend in Tokyo. This photo shows him receiving his Silver Medal for sparring against Japan; he also won Bronze in Team Sparring for Australia. (Contributed on behalf of parent) Athletics Carnival

From the Guidance Officer
NAPCAN’s Child Protection Week theme is that children thrive when their parents are supported
This theme is based on evidence
from the Frameworks Institute
research commissioned by the
Parenting Research Centre, which
shows us the most effective way to
talk about parenting and child
wellbeing is with a ‘child
development’ frame that:
Focuses on children and what they need to thrive, rather than blaming or evaluating parenting
Establishes the importance of interaction with parents and caregivers to child development, rather than assuming that young children simply grow.
Helps people see that circumstances shape options, rather than assuming that good parenting comes naturally to individuals.
Uses a ‘navigating waters’ metaphor where boats represent families/parenting, weather/hazards represents the circumstances that can affect us all, and lighthouses and safe harbours represent the support that we all need.
NAPCAN’s strategy is to support and encourage changes in individual and community behaviour
to stop child abuse and neglect before it starts by:
Promoting quality research so the causes and impact of child abuse and neglect can be better understood and effective ways to prevent it can be developed and measured.
Coordinating National Child Protection Week and promoting the Play Your Part strategy to invite all Australians to play their part to promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. “Protecting children is everyone’s business.”
Providing resources and training to support the safety and wellbeing of children and young people ranging from role based factsheets and brochures to child centered training, programs and initiatives such as the Aboriginal Girls Circle.
Advocating for changes in policies and strategies that place the wellbeing and safety of children and young people first.
Developing and promoting community led prevention programs and initiatives, which are evidenced based and effective in reducing the risks of abuse and neglect for children and young people, through our own programs such as Love Bites, All Children Being Safe, #Friends and promoting others through the Play Your Part Awards. (Annette Te Aho)

Every donation you make contributes to the overall success of our event. As a way of showing our
appreciation, everyone who brings in Carnival donations will go in the draw for Carnival Rewards,
drawn weekly on parade, from 15 September. The
more you contribute, the more chances you have to
win Carnival Rewards. Donations can be dropped off
at the P&C room or the library and weekly draw
