Edgefield TheftWe have a house in Plumstead and our gardener spoke to us on Tuesday to say he had two wheels stolen from his car. It was parked outside his house in Edgefield on Sunday night and he found the wheels gone on Monday morning. They had done something to his security light as that was broken and no one, including the dog, heard anything. We will now be locking our car with the alarm on when it is in the driveway at night. My dear friendsSummer at last!

I hope that you are all enjoying this hot weather. In the parishes we have most certainly been fortunate weather-wise for our special events. On St Peter’s Day eighty people came to Matlaske Barbecue in the Rectory garden – yes; we raised just over £500 for church funds. But, equally important, it was a real community event. Jo and I would like to thank all those who helped. It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves.

The annual Petertide Evensong at North Barningham was lovely. A special ‘thank you’ to the Benefice Choir who excelled themselves.

The Big Fête at Plumstead was a great success – but it really was hot – so much so that a certain cleric’s chocolate cake melted as he ate it! Thanks to Mary Lintott and her team.

Still to come are Matlaske Fête on 27 July and Hempstead Fête on 4 August. Let’s hope for a bumper turn out at both events. How fortunate we are that the church and the wider community work so well together.

and even better, given a glass of sherry which we supped on the balcony overlooking the tower itself. It was absolutely magical. Almost silent in the middle of the City of London. We would have been entirely on our own but for the two rather suspicious-looking ravens.

We then proceeded to the West End where, in those days, you could park you car (even for free!) and a very good shivoo was had in an extremely swish night club called the Blue Angel.

When we returned to the Tower, the guardsman did not have the nerve to delay Miss Brunt. I cannot blame him as she was a lovely girl but a bit bossy. My mother had nick-named her Queen Victoria for very good reasons!

Which left me to find my bed for the night or what was left of it in Esher, down the Portsmouth Road. At 3 o’clock in the morning there was no traffic so I had a lovely drive – all the traffic lights were at green except one. As I slowed a policeman stepped into the road and waved me through. I have a slight inkling that life was a bit more civilised in those days. Bertie   

Bertie’s Ramblings

You have had a couple of my ‘How not to’ stories and there do not seem to have been too many complaints - I am always interested in any feedback. So let’s go for another one which happened years ago in, I think, 1966.

This was the year when my cousin William was twenty-one years old. I was invited to his party in London. It just so happened that the girlfriend of a great pal of mine at Oxford was also invited; but not him. It seemed to be civil to say that I would take her. She was studying at London University and, during term time, she had ‘digs’ in the Tower of London – her cousin (or was it uncle) being Governor.

So on the appointed day I set off from Hempstead in my trusty Austin A40 pick-up – a word of advice here: never wash your car before going up to the smoke. I had a lot of fun driving up there, they always give way to a dirty truck! I even once turned right into Oxford Street from the left-hand lane! The plan was to pick up Miss Brunt at 8:15 pm from the Tower. I arrived at about 8:05 pm to be met by a barrier and a very smart guardsman wearing a gorgeous pink overcoat. ‘What are you doing here?’ ‘I have come to pick up Miss Brunt’ I replied. Complete impasse – no barrier raised. Was he mentally retarded, deaf, or what! So I turned on my well-known charm and tried to talk my way in; but still to no avail.

In desperation I reached into my pocket to find my 1260 which anyone who has ever served in the Forces will recognise as the identity card, when our dear guardsman said ‘You can go in now, sir.’ I suppose his orders were Harmer 2015 hrs and not a moment earlier. I drove and found my way to the Governor’s House where I was shown Nell Gwyn’s signature – supposedly carved on the fireplace before she was decapitated –

18 Aug Sun @ 10 am Wells Harbour DayWells Harbour Commissioners celebrate their 350 year anniversary – The fun-packed day will include live bands and entertainment – The Thames Barge Cambria will arrive in Wells for the day, built in 1906, she is famed as the last British-registered vessel to carry a commercial cargo under sail alone (until 1970) and as such forms a unique part of our industrial and maritime heritage. She also came to Wells when operational so we welcome her back to the Port – As well as the Cambria, the sailing barge Juno will return for a visit. Built at Charlie Ward’s boatyard in March 2000, her design was inspired by the Thames Barges that used to trade in and out of Wells Harbour – The day has something for everyone, so please come along and join in our celebrations.

Gordon LambertA service to celebrate the life of a true Baconsthorpe ‘boy’, Gordon Lambert, was held at St Mary’s Church on July 16th. Gordon was born in Dales Yard and began his working life on farms in the area. He was also a deep-sea diver and it was whilst diving off Cromer, that he met and later married, Lilian. After joining the Coldstream Guards, he travelled extensively and those years were still spoken of with great pride by Gordon. He and Lilian ran several successful businesses in the area.

Sadly, as time progressed, he became more and more restricted by ill health, but still remained the larger than life character he always was.

Two weeks before his death and although very poorly by this time, Gordon was able to celebrate his 80th birthday with his family and a few close friends. We send our condolences to Lilian, Ian, Joanne and Julie and their families. Ro

Village Hall NewsThe Quiz was a very successful event with over 40 people enjoying an evening of fun Quizzing and a Jacket-potato supper. £150 was made towards the upkeep of your Village Hall.

Don’t forget the 50/50 Auction on Saturday 10th August (see centre pages).

We did have a couple of new people attend our AGM with offers of help so for the time being we will continue to do some fund raising events so that we leave money available for the repairs and fuel, etc, for the future.

This committee will continue to look after your Village Hall to the best of their abilities so that it is up-to-date and clean for whoever chooses to hire it. Larger fund-raising events will have to be scaled down after Christmas but you will be notified of our events in the newsletter, posters and papers so you can come and support us.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 12th September at 7:30 pm. With a Jumble Sale on the 13th September at 7 pm. Any jumble can be left at the village hall at any time. JC

Moving HomeWe send our best wishes to George Grimwood who recently moved from his bungalow in The Pyghtle to Lloyd Court, High Kelling. We hope he will be very happy in his new surroundings. George often reminded me, with his usual sense of humour, that I had never ‘officially’ welcomed him and his late wife Marion, to the village. Dot SmithThe funeral service for Dot Smith was held at St Mary’s Church, Baconsthorpe on July 8th. Dot and her husband Jimmy had lived in the village for fifty years before moving to Cromer ten years ago. Having lost her sight and mobility in recent years, Dot was wonderfully cared for by Jimmy, until she had to move in to Benjamin Court in Cromer, where Jimmy faithfully visited her every day. They recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. A day thoroughly enjoyed in the company of their family. We send our condolences to Carolyn, Martin, Paul and their families. Ro

Leo Graves. Also present were Nick Thompson, Trustee of the Churches Conservation Trust, together with his wife and many members of the Palgrave Society who had come from far and wide to be present on this great occasion.

Much spit and polish had been expended on the interior of the church. Amelia Courtauld and Mary Pallister’s spring flowers in posies and bouquets filled the space with the promise of summer since fulfilled. The altar was decked with the magnificent red and gold cloth specially donated for the purpose by the late Lady Harrod.

The service was conducted by the Rev Michael Cartwright, our rector, who also directed the choir. Under his guidance there was some very fine singing which added to the glory of the occasion. Our visiting speaker, Canon the Rev Father Howard Stoker, spoke at length about the many qualities of our patron saint and the congregation sang the hymns with unusual gusto.

At the end of the service Catharine Graves, daughter of Mr and Mrs Palgrave, produced a magnificent commemorative cake which she had baked for the occasion. This was sliced up and enjoyed by the congregation.

Barningham NewsCelebrating Fortieth Anniversary at North BarninghamOn June 30th we at St Peter’s, North Barningham gathered together to give thanks to the Churches Conservation Trust for committing themselves to take on responsibility for our church after it fell into disuse. We also celebrated not only forty year’s devotion to the church on the part of Derek and Pamela Palgrave, but also the fact that it was they who took the initiative to do something about a building which they loved but which was rapidly falling into disrepair.

About sixty of us gathered together for evensong that day, which is very good going indeed when you take into account that it was practically the first weekend of the year on which it was warm and sunny enough to make being out-of-doors a welcome counter-attraction. Among those who attended the service were Derek and Pamela Palgrave, their son Christopher, their daughter Catharine and a grandson,

Back from the deadLast week was a traumatic time at Orchid Cottage. On consecutive nights my three chickens (Grace, Marigold and Shirley) disappeared; last to go was Shirley an aged six-year-old but champion egg-laying White Sussex. All that was left was a sad trail of feathers leading away in a northerly direction and reports from Lis next door of mayhem in the night. The guilty party is assumed to be a local vixen feeding cubs.

To my surprise the following day a very welcome message from Dave to say that there was a white hen roosting in his rose bush. It was indeed Shirley; looking well but missing tail and wing feathers. Suffice to say, she now roosts indoors. MT

Walter CallabyDeepest sympathy to Mary Callaby and her family on the death of her husband Walter on 16th June 2013.

On 5th July 2013 320 people attended a Service of Thanksgiving for the Life of Walter Callaby at St Mary’s Baconsthorpe. Walter was born in Bessingham on 3rd August 1923. When he was 11 his Father took over the tenancy of Gap Farm so the family moved to Matlaske. In 1948 he married Mary Smith, who lived in

’Drome MemoriesLast month’s cover story reminds me of the ’drome being bombed. I guess it would be in about 1943. We were living at Brownwood in Hempstead at the time and I clearly remember that the farm house seemed to move up the field and back again when the bombs fell in the middle of the night. Also, we were told by someone stationed there at the time that King George VI had visited. That would have been 1943 or 1944. Diana

FundraisingStaying Alive? Marion and Jim Shepherd are raising funds for a defibrillator. This will cover Matlaske, North Barningham, Plumstead and the local vicinity, within a short drive. Jim has been trained by the British Heart Foundation as a Heartstart course instructor and needs other volunteers to be prepared for ‘call out’. Please contact Jim on 577521. Once funds are raised, there will be an informal meeting to show all, including ‘non-volunteers’, interested in how defibrillators work and other useful tips on CPR, etc. Location, access and practical applications can then be organised. Kathy LawrenceBorn at Barningham 84 years ago, Kathy lived in Plumstead for over sixty years. She worked for Mr and Mrs Lawton at Plumstead House, and then at Plumstead Hall Farm. Following retirement, she helped Bert look after their garden which was the envy of many with lots of summer colour.

Kathy leaves her son Ian and four granddaughters. Her only surviving sister, Rose, lives in Yorkshire. Eileen Gibbons

Frank KerrellOriginally from Croydon in Surrey, Dad moved to Plumstead with my Mum from Hertfordshire in March 1999. He was shortly afterwards diagnosed as having Parkinsons Disease but bravely fought against its affects.

Dad became Clerk to the Parish Council in April 2001. P Lawton, chairman the Parish Council, reported in May 2004 in Plumstead Parish Council Minute Book: ‘The new Council also faced another change in that Frank Kerrell retired his voluntary role of Clerk to the Parish Council. Frank did an excellent job as Clerk and was often to be seen pounding the streets of Plumstead delivering documents to Parish Councillors and, particularly, harrying your Chairman into action. On behalf of the Parish Council, I would like to thank Frank for his time and service to the community.’

In May 2007 Dad became a member of the Parish Council. Dad resigned at the meeting held on 8th July 2010 with the following mention in the minutes: ‘The resignation of Frank Kerrell from the Parish Council was received, with much appreciation for many years of service as Clerk and Councillor.’

He moved from Ashley two years ago to live in an assisted-living flat in North

Walsham, near my sister. More recently he had suffered from ill health, mostly minor strokes. He spent about four months in the North Walsham Cottage Hospital and later transferred to Hickling House in early June. He was taken ill suddenly on 3rd July 2013 and died peacefully later that morning at James Paget Hospital. Mary Keasley

Plumstead Big FêteI know... I’m always going on about how amazing our events are – but hey, you have to tell it like it is! And – Plumstead Big Fête was an amazing success – well and truly demolishing the previously elusive £1000 barrier for Church Funds. Just to put you absentees in the picture – and what a picture it was!... Mat, Ruth and Benjy, in a tangle of trimmings, managed to dress the street in its best party frock for the day – and Church Farm House garden was a work of art fit for the proverbial Summer Show.

Awards for the occasion went as follows... As ever, the blot on the landscape was, of course, the Bric-a-brac stall which, as usual, won the Turner Prize for its customary eccentricity. The glamorous array of guest stalls were an Oscar-worthy display of colour and sparkle. The RHS award went jointly to the Lintott’s garden and the excellent home-grown plant stall. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were well deserved by the Games Makers in the top garden. The Book stall won the Booker Prize for avoiding melting in the sun and becoming Pulp Fiction. And the winner of the Great British Bake Off was the Walled Garden which had all its Tea patrons nicely browned and with a delicious filling from the scrumptious selection on offer. The Happy Shopper award went to the Bottle stall for its abundance of satisfied customers. And finally... A bowl of gruel to John Lintott on Donations for being the boy who dared to ask for more... The lime green flippers from the bric-a-brac to Fred to ensure that his feet are big enough to trip up absolutely everybody to buy a raffle ticket... and a Lego
