Dear Sisters in Christ,

Greetings to all who are gathered in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ Are the heartbeat of our organization and I thank God for each of you and your faithful service to God in Christ through Women of the ELCA. We are woven together in our faith, service and sisterhood. As you gather in community at your synodical convention, you might remember that after my election in July; I asked you to consider what it means to raise up the foundations of Women of the ELCA, and how we might live into God’s plan through our faith, our stories and our organization. Almost every day God offers us an opportunity to make a difference, and I believe we have been called to raise the foundations by lifting up women of faith who have led the way. We have been called to repair the breach by reconciling division and restoring broken relationships. We have been called to restore the streets to dwell in by working to break the violence in schools and to put an end to human trafficking of women and children through these memorials. As you work together, fellowship together and pray together, remember as Christian women we have an opportunity to stand up for women and children everywhere. My representative who is attending your convention is excited and looks forward to speaking with each of you. She would love to hear about your joys and your concerns, especially about all the wonderful things going on in your units, as you continue to live out God’s call as Women of the ELCA. Please know if there is anything we can do to assist you in your ministry, the Executive board and our staff in Chicago would like to hear from you. God Bless Each of You,

Patti Austin

Greetings to Eastern North Dakota Women of the ELCA,

At the mid-point of my term as your President, I am grateful for the many kindnesses you have

shown to each other and those in the world outside your local congregations.

You have made quilts to cover the homeless, the grief-stricken, the lonely, and hurting. You

have given quilts to your congregations’ confirmands and graduates. You have provided prayer shawls

as a ministry to the ill and elderly. You have done much for education, health, and sharing the Good

News of Jesus Christ in our nation and throughout the world. You have been God’s Hands in our

world.

As we gather for this 28th

annual convention of Eastern North Dakota Synodical Women’s

Organization, I am reminded that our greatest needs are coming closer to home. We have women and

children in crisis—The Oil Boom has brought economic growth to our state, as well as a darker side,

that of increased crime. We can turn our heads, saying, “It’s OVER THERE, in the Western part of

North Dakota, it isn’t any big deal. They can deal with it.” OR we can say, “This affects every one of

us and we must get involved!”

Our call is to make God’s love known by our actions and words. We must become

knowledgeable as to what we need to do to help those affected by human trafficking. We are called to

be aware of what is going on, not only in the western part of our state, but also in our own

communities. I hope that each one of you will take this message back to your congregations, use the

information you have learned today to make a difference locally and globally.

Our theme verse, Jeremiah 29:11, sums up God’s plan—“For surely I know the plans I have for

you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” We

want to ensure that each one of us has hope for our future, to know that, no matter what is going on in

our lives, God has a plan for good, not harm, and we can focus on that hope for the future. That hope

is our promise from God—let us remember His Words for us!

Thank you for being with us today. Thank you for being the instruments of hope to each other

and the world around us.

May God continue to bless you and your work in His name!

Kevin Wallevand has been a Reporter at WDAY-TV since 1983. He is a native of Vining, Minnesota in Otter Tail County. His series and documentary work have brought him to Africa, Vietnam, Haiti, Kosovo, South American, Mongolia and the Middle East. Kevin is an Emmy and Edward R. Murrow award recipient.

Ely Smith was elected treasurer of the church wide executive board in July 2014. This is her second term on the church wide board. She serves on the finance committee and as chair of the development committee. Ely was previously on the board of the Southwestern Washington Synodical Women’s Organization. She served as treasurer for two terms. She was president of her local unit at Trinity Lutheran Church in Tacoma, Wash. During her term, she led the board in developing new programs and encouraged “out-of-the-box” thinking to encourage new participation. Ely has also served as treasurer of her congregation’s church council.

Ely enjoys travel with purpose. In 2001, she went to Romania on the NW Medical Teams’ Gifts of Hope mission, distributing small gifts, bread, and warm clothing to hundreds of children displaced during the Ceausescu regime. Upon return, she became a founding board member of World Change for Children, an organization dedicated to addressing the needs of children in poverty, particularly in Romania. In 2005, Ely participated in the summer English-language program with China Service Ventures. She also volunteered in Reynosa, Mexico, at Children’s Haven International. Ely resides in Fircrest, Wash., a small city on the edge of Tacoma. She has two sons, six grandchildren, a dog, and a cat. Educated at Pacific Lutheran University, Ely worked as an accountant for non-profit organizations for many years. Her love of the unique has led to an unusual acquisition: a caboose. Ely feels extremely privileged to serve on the executive board. She embraces the opportunity to share the women’s organization with women all over the world, helping to promote peace and justice, and helping women live out our mission statement, with God’s help.

Pastor Kara Wiechmann currently serves as the associate pastor with Tri-County Ministry (TCM), an

ecumenical, multipoint parish in rural North Dakota. TCM is composed of 7 congregations (6 ELCA, 1

Presbyterian) that share a pastoral staff.

about characters. She enjoys walking her dog Ziggy in nice weather, and Ziggy seems to enjoy being

out and meeting people while walking. Her other big interest is traveling in the United States and in

Europe where she reconnects with family and friends but also gains new experiences.

REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT 2015

The 28th

annual Convention of the Eastern North Dakota 3-B Synodical Women of the ELCA is

underway. It is hard to believe that our organization has been in existence for over 28 years. Yet when

one counts the years of the predecessor women’s groups—ALCW, LCW, and numerous others, we

move into hundreds of years. How many gallons of coffee, how many dinners, how many quilts, how

many dollars have been made through the efforts of women? Only God knows how the world has

benefitted from all these efforts!

Each one of you has made a difference, be it with a hot dish brought to a neighbor, a day spent

quilting, a check written as a donation for World Hunger, prayer for a wayward child, a letter

petitioning for a better world. Our actions, small or large, made to ease suffering and celebrate joys

show God’s love for all.

This past year has been an adventure in learning and growth for me as president. As with all things

new, there is a learning curve. At the first meeting of the board (a Transition Meeting), former and

incoming members gathered to plan for this year. A newly elected board member, Jan Maurstad,

resigned due to health issues—Marlene Arneson was appointed to serve as Grafton Cluster

representative. We have kept Jan in our prayers and encouraged Marlene as she fulfills the term. God

is good and gives us who we need at all times.

As the New Year came, I attended the SWO Presidents’ Conference in Chicago. It was the coldest part

of February (-200

F) when I packed my carry-on suitcase for a three day stay in the “Windy City”. Not

only did I have clothing to pack, but I also had to bring two 60” x 80” pieces of fleece to make a tie-

blanket. I used a “space bag” to flatten the fleece (the resulting package could have been used as a

weapon!!!) I managed to get everything packed and to Chicago—on a delayed flight that made me

miss the first evening of the conference. I arrived in Grand Forks on Sunday night at 11:30 with the

temperature hovering at -24F and prayed my car would start—it did, reluctantly, and I drove home on

a COLD clear night!

While at the Conference, I learned more about the workings of the Women of the ELCA on the

national level. There is a wealth of programming available for our units. We truly need to use more of

the information and educational offerings. The website www.womenoftheelca.org has a wealth of

resources that can be downloaded free of charge. Ask the church secretary or one of your members to

download a copy if you don’t have a computer yourself.

As we planned for this convention, more and more information came to our attention concerning the

trafficking problem in the Oil Patch of ND. We had already learned of human trafficking at the

Triennial Convention where a resolution concerning human trafficking had been passed as a focus for

this Triennium. As a SWO board, we chose to make this a focus of our convention. We invited Kevin

Wallevand to be our keynote speaker since he produced a documentary on this topic this past year. I

hope that each one of you feels called to help the victims of this crime and that we can work together

to bring it to an end.

Our Clusters have held Spring Gatherings and, thanks to the representatives and WELCA Units, have

been successful in sharing stories of hope and faith in action. I was able to attend five of the eight

gatherings and was encouraged to grow in faith and action at each one. I marvel at the strength of

those who shared stories of mission trips to places where hope is nearly gone and yet faith continues to

flourish and grow! May we all be touched by that strong faith and hope!

As your President, I am a non-voting member of the Synod Council. It is much like your church

council, but is comprised of voting members from each conference in EaND Synod. It is an interesting

group of lay and clergy members who meet regularly to deal with the business of our Synod.

One of the duties of which I was part was the dispersing of the Resource Center because there was no

space available nor a person to be in charge of maintaining it. It is difficult for a librarian to dispose of

materials, however a space was set aside at the Synod Assembly to do just that. Pastors and lay

persons were given the opportunity to choose and take away materials for personal use. Red Willow

Bible Camp, Park River Bible Camp, Lutheran Student Center at NDSU, Christus Rex at UND, and

many individuals were able to use over 5000 items.

I also took a number of DVDs and videos to make available for our WELCA units for programs.

These may be borrowed and returned by you for the cost of postage. See your packet for information

about how to do this.

Our annual Women’s Retreat at Maryvale was an opportunity to grow as we learned what it meant to

follow in Christ’s footsteps. Our Outreach Committee did a great job in setting up the program and the

Sisters at Maryvale were gracious hosts in providing for all our needs—from an inviting place to

lovely luncheon to a place of contemplation in a walking tour of the grounds. We were welcomed in

Christ’s name.

Next year we will elect voting members to the 10th

Triennial convention in Minneapolis, MN. Please

consider placing your name in nomination. It is a marvelous opportunity to learn more about our

organization and its work. Consider going to the Triennial Gathering as a participant, plans are already

underway to encourage as many as possible to attend!

If you haven’t already been to our website, please check it out. www.eandsynodwelca.org is a source

for you to find out more about what’s happening in Eastern North Dakota.

I look forward to an exciting year of growth and renewal because I know God has a plan for me and

you!

Yours in Christ,

Karen Retzlaff, EaND SWO President ~ 9 ~

of sex trafficking and exploitation in North Dakota.

4her North Dakota takes a holistic approach to the issue of sex trafficking. Founder, Windie Lazenko is part of

the National Survivor Network working to educate, advocate and eradicate modern slavery in the form of sex

trafficking here in America.

Our Services: Housing, Aid & Mentoring, Response & Intervention, and Education & Training.

OUR GOAL is to open a 30 day crisis shelter in each North Dakota city experiencing Sex Trafficking starting

with Williston. We have a goal of raising $10,000 a month to run the first and only crisis center in ND… It will

be H.E.R. House! We will help stabilize these precious young women, build trusting relationships and refer

them to specialized programs throughout the United States.

We aid survivors by providing tangible needs such as clothing, toiletries and shelter. We have partnered with

professionals who are willing to provide medical, mental health and dental care at low cost or free of charge. We

believe mentoring is necessary for success at every stage of recovery.

We respond to sex trafficking and exploitation by offering crisis intervention and care.

Education is key to an effective fight against sex trafficking and exploitation. Attend one of our education or

Mission Action, Growth, Community, Prison Ministry, and Young Women’s Outreach

This report continues the tradition of sharing what has been happening in Eastern North Dakota as a result of

WELCA activities. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of quilts made for Lutheran World Relief by local

units every year. Sewing kits, personal care kits, school kits, and other LWR projects are continued by local

units. Only they know how much has been given to help those across the street and around the world.

(Wouldn’t it be fun to know the numbers???)

Units have sponsored mission trips to various places in the world. They have helped with Global Mission

projects in the Central African Republic as our companion synod faces the chaos of civil war. One

congregational unit hosts a pancake breakfast every year to raise money to send women to the Triennial

Convention. This past year, there was about $800.00 left over, so the women voted to give it to Global Mission

for the Central African Republic for whatever needs the Lutheran church might have.

Units go to a variety of locations to serve meals for the homeless in shelters across our Synod. They offer

clothing, bedding, and kitchen supplies for refugees who hope to resettle in North Dakota. Lutheran Social

Services has provided the means for giving assistance to new Americans.

Our third annual Women’s Retreat was held in August—with great success. These retreats provide a chance for

women to “check out” of their daily lives to be renewed, refreshed, and ready to take on the challenges of life.

The site at Maryvale offers a quiet, restful atmosphere for those who attend for a day.

The bassinette bedding is an on-going project for Sanford Hospital and hospitals that care for NICU infants.

Julie Garrett began this project and continues to encourage women to help whenever possible. Baby quilts and

children’s quilts are always appreciated by emergency rooms in hospitals. Check with your local hospitals to

see if there is a current need. If there is, please consider donating smaller quilts to those places.

With the increase of trafficking in our state, we also need to become involved in helping victims of trafficking as

they are located and brought to recovery programs. Our women can help in many ways. Victims of domestic

abuse also need our help. Community intervention centers are always in need of personal care items, pajamas,

clothing, blankets, etc. Check with your local centers for a needs list. Often women (and children) who leave

an abusive situation, have nothing but the clothes on their backs as they arrive at a shelter. It is a horrific time

and the comfort of a blanket or stuffed animal may make the difference in the life of a child who has seen what

no child should ever see!

Our prison ministry is still accepting yarn for the Jamestown Correctional Center. The inmates are still

crocheting and knitting caps, sweaters, mittens, afghans, and scarves for those in need in this country and look

beyond themselves. They make a difference and feel better about themselves—lives are changed! Contact

Chaplain Mark Haines at the Jamestown Correctional facility for more information.

As the apostle Paul once said, “Never cease in doing good!”

May God Bless all your efforts!

Report of the Editor of CONNECTIONS:

Newsletter of Eastern North Dakota Synodical Women’s Organization

September 26, 2015

The newsletter of the Eastern North Dakota Synodical Women’s Organization is currently in its

18th

year of publication with Karen Retzlaff as editor. A variety of previous newsletters were

composed by others intermittently for various purposes. At one time, only the SWO Board received

regular updates of events in the Synod. This was expanded to newsletters for church units and later

subscriptions for individuals were added. The publication is usually 4 pages long with the larger

edition following the Synodical convention. The larger edition includes photos and information about

the convention held in September every year.

This past year has been sporadic in production with only two newsletters being printed instead

of four, as the plan states. While the time line has varied, the newsletter is continuing publication with

two issues completed, a third & fourth are in the works.

The editor uses Microsoft Publisher to prepare the issue prior to printing. The copy is

converted to PDF and sent to Ness Press of Fordville, ND, for printing and distribution. The editor

maintains the mailing list and continues to update it regularly. Subscriptions are sent to the editor and

money transferred to the Treasurer. There is often a time lag, since the money is often held until a

SWO Board meeting when it is turned over to the treasurer. (That may be the reason for checks not

clearing on a monthly basis. Do not worry—it will be deposited!)

Your subscription label includes a “code” to let you know when your subscription expires. It looks

like this: “Jane Lutheran JL/13”; this means “Your Name” “month/ year of expiration of the

subscription.”

The editor is often looking for news from Congregational units, or WELCAs, to include in the

issues. It is suggested that a listing of the number of quilts created by the women for distribution could

be of interest to others—perhaps creating a “Quilt Challenge”. A “Yarn Challenge” for prison

ministries could also be a Mission Action Project.

Another possibility could be a story about programs held by the WELCAs. So often program

chairmen are at a loss when Cluster Gatherings are planned. If we share information, many more can

benefit from successful programs held in Eastern North Dakota’s congregational units.

We are more than Bible Studies, Church Dinners, Quilters, and so on—Let us share our BOLD

WOMEN’s activities and efforts. Send an email to the editor at [email protected] or send

your story by “snail-mail” to:

Today’s Dream, Tomorrow’s Reality

Racial Justice Team Report

2015

“Today’s Dream, Tomorrow’s Reality” (TD-TR) is the title used for the anti-racism program of

the Women of the ELCA. With the 2011-2014 Triennial Convention action, the focus has changed to

Racial Justice Advocacy. The goals are still the same, but the title has changed. The portfolio of Inez

Torres Davis was expanded to include justice advocacy as well as anti-racism when the staff of the

Church wide Office was reduced during the Triennium.

The program materials have been revised to reflect some of the changes from the first programs

of the group with a focus on advocacy for justice for all people. While program materials have been

used with great effectiveness, there is always room for improvement.

Inez Torres-Davis has the TD-TR portfolio with the Women of the ELCA. She is currently

using Sabbatical time (one month at a time) to rewrite and update TD-TR materials. A team of women

from the network are assisting with editorial suggestions as materials are completed. Karen Retzlaff is

one of those team members.

The in-depth trainings give participants the opportunity to study God’s Word to discern His

Will in the work of racial justice. Karen Retzlaff, one of the Racial Justice team members from

Eastern North Dakota, has taken part in these trainings and is available to speak to groups about this

important program.

The Ninth Triennial Convention delegates passed a resolution to advocate for children in crisis

who are coming to the United States by the hundreds for safety from the violence in their home

countries. This is a justice issue for the children who need to escape the murder and violence in

Central America. Members of TD-TR formulated and introduced the resolution to the convention

delegates. It was passed by a vote of 318 ayes to 30 nays for a total of 348 votes cast.

Please consider prayerfully, hosting a program in your congregational unit or congregation to

learn more about Racial Justice.

Your TD-TR trainers,

Karen Retzlaff & Darla Thiele

SYNODICAL WOMEN’S RETREAT Saturday, August 1, 2015

On August 1, 2015, the END Synodical Women hosted its 4th Annual Women’s Retreat at Maryvale Provincial Center in Valley City, North Dakota. The theme for this year’s retreat was “ Walking In My Footsteps” with a second feature of “Walking the Talk”. With a total attendance of 106, including the speakers, this was the largest attendance to date for the retreat. The Young Women’s Retreat Committee members were Starr Braaten, Nadine Olson, Kathy Johnson and Jeanne Wobbema. Planning started in October 2014 by first coming up with a theme. Thanks to a suggestion by Bernell Bachmeier regarding something to the effect of wouldn’t it be fascinating to teach young mothers and even older ladies, that by just paying attention to persons who have gone before us and who have had good faith lives we could learn so much. Speakers for the retreat were Pastor Stephanie Tollefson, Freemont, Nebraska with “ Following in My Footsteps” and Casey Baardson, West Fargo, North Dakota, with “ Walking the Talk”. The devotional leader for the retreat was Pastor Kara Wiechmann from McVille, North Dakota. It was amazing to find God at work in these women, who each had their own agenda, none had talked to the others and yet their sessions intertwined like braided hair. God indeed had His hand in guiding the outcome of this day. The ladies attending the retreat were offered golf cart tours of the Maryvale grounds, during a 90 minutes break at lunchtime. Drivers of the carts were volunteers from the Valley City area. By a show of hands I would venture that 75% of the ladies took advantage of this feature. The retreat committee decided to use a “ flip-flop” theme for marketing the event and that showed up in decorating, prizes and printed material. The committee invited four vendors to have displays at the retreat for some fun shopping for participants, if they chose. The vendors this year were: Olive Wood, Martha & Mary, Paparazzi, and Young Living Essential Oils. Each vendor reported they had a good day with customers and each vendor gave away a door prize from registration at their booths. The Maryvale Provincial Center kitchen staff fed the retreat attendees. We enjoyed a wonderful meal of meat and egg salad sandwiches, chips, fresh vegetables, and a fruit cup dessert. Refreshments in the auditorium were supplied by SWO and a few SWO board members who brought bars. Registration was as follows: Early registration was $35 before July 15 and $45 dollars at the door. Registration fees covered all cost associated with the retreat including but not limited to: speaker, volunteer and thank you gratuities, Maryvale rentals, food for event including lunch and breaks, advertising, postage, mileage for the retreat committee, decorations, registrations gifts, and door prizes. . Our next retreat will be August 13, 2016 at Maryvale once again. Sincerely Jeanne Wobbema Credentials: Number in Attendance: 101 participants + 3 speakers + 4 vendors = 108 total Registration: $3707.00 Speaker Gratuities: $1200.00 Volunteer Gratuities: $65.00 Total set up expenses: $604.17 Total Maryvale bill: $884.00 Net Profit $953.83

Prairie Rose Cluster Report McVille Lutheran Church – McVille, ND

April 25, 2015 Prairie Rose Cluster has had its first cluster gathering… well sort of. Formerly known as the Carrington Cluster, the 2015 cluster gathering took place on April 25, 2015 at McVille Lutheran in McVille, North Dakota. Fifty 53 women from throughout the Eastern North Dakota Women of the ELCA gathered to celebrate the “Gifts of the Spirit”.

Rev. Kara Wiechmann, Pastor of McVille Lutheran led the ladies in a bible study about the gifts of the spirit. She took the ladies on a journey of first what the gifts of the spirit are, to which gifts each of do or do not feel we have. Pastor kept her audience alert and active in participation and in the end showed us that we might not each hold each gift personally, but in the group each shared most of them when teamed together. We are not expected to be stewards of all things, but are encouraged to share the ones we do have.

Pastor also led us in table grace and later in the afternoon held a meaningful communion service. It was wonderful that she stayed with us for the day.

Kelli Schmitt, representing McVille Lutheran, kept our day moving with opening remarks, scheduled music, introductions and even added a joke or two.

Red Willow Bible Camp had greetings for us and many thanks for what the WELCA groups of eastern North Dakota do to support the camp.

Karen Retzlaff, president of the END Synod Women’s Organization, attended and brought greeting from the Synod. Karen shared what her position includes and stayed the day to answer questions that many of us would have.

Jeanne Wobbema, Prairie Rose Cluster Representative, greeted the ladies with information on the new way of supporting the SWO. Jeanne also handed out the packets for the 2015 year to each congregational unit. She thanked people who took packets for the churches that could not attend. With that help, not one single packet has to be mailed this year. The packets contain information that each unit may find helpful in the life of WELCA during this 2015 year. Each unit was encouraged to take them back to their parishes and put them where they would not be forgotten.

Desiree Bouvette, Devils Lake and a member of a Venezuelan Mission Team from her home church, was present and was the guest speaker to share her story of what team encountered during the past year after her team was apprehended by the Venezuelan government. Her story was one of not only the chances the team had to share faith, but also of what the team had to endure with the action of the government. Her journey showed not only her faith but also the strength and courage these four people had to live out during the ordeal. There were times that were frightening but they found occasions to laugh also. Desiree let it be known that the team was very aware of God’s presence through the whole journey.

As for offerings, McVille offered an opportunity to bring in-kind gifts of paper products for Red Willow. The monetary offering collected during the bible study was split half and half between the END Synod and Red Willow Bible Camp. The ladies also provided a free will offering for the Mission Team that Desiree represented.

The ladies of McVille served muffins, coffee and tea upon our arrival. For lunch they served assorted croissants, mixed fruit and cheesecake. Before leaving for the day, they once again treated everyone to assorted bars and coffee.

Attendance: 53 Monetary Offering: $246.45 (Red Willow = $123.45 END Synod - $123.00 Free Will Offering for Mission Team: $59.00 Total Fees to be reimbursed by SWO: $354.05 Includes: Mileage - $62.70 Gratuities - $175.00 Printing, postage & supplies - $79.50

Fargo Cluster Report

St. Peter’s Lutheran Church – Rural Leonard, ND May 2, 2015

The Fargo Cluster gathered at St. Peter Lutheran in rural Leonard on Saturday, May 2, 2015. After registration and coffee, we gathered in the sanctuary to participate in our theme of “The Lord’s Prayer”. We opened with a presentation from Stephanie Meyers of Faith Communities Alive, followed by devotions with Pastor Flaa. We were entertained by a skit of the Lord’s Prayer. We also had presentations by Megan Bjone from PATH and a representative from Community of Cares. We were presented an act from the congregations play “Come Follow Me”, which was wonderful. Following the introduction and a few words from the Synodical Vice President, Sharon Rostad, and a quick go through of the packet, we sang grace and had an absolutely delicious lunch and fellowship. We had a surprise visit from the Synodical President, Karen Retzlaff, during lunch.

The in-kind offering was nonperishable items for the Casselton Food Pantry, which the director said were perfect items and things they totally needed and could use. We had displays, including Melberg’s Christian & Books and PATH. There were 60 people in attendance. The offering was $150 and was split 50/50 between the Casselton Food Pantry and the EaND Synodical Women’s Board. One request to women’s groups from congregations who did not have a representative at this event is to contact Pam Neumiller, 701-282-7058, and give me a contact name and address/phone number ASAP as churchwide is requesting this information from the synodical board. Thank you. Pam Neumiller, Fargo Cluster Representative

Leah Skjerven, Zion WELCA president gave a welcome followed by Marion Hurtt having devotions. Marlene Arneson Cluster Representative gave a report on some extra things she had added to the packet. This included a pattern for pipe cleaner mosquitoes. This is the last year for the campaign to make Malaria history in Africa. EaND is way behind on their pledges. Also included was a well done brochure on things we do for our companionship in C.A.R. Karen Retzlaff explained the remainder of the packet. Marlene thanked Karen for coming as she felt it was an honor to have the board president at her Cluster Gathering. Marlene asked for a WELA to host the spring gathering for 2016. As of yet, no one has volunteered. The key note speaker was Pastor Karl Bredden from United Lutheran in Langdon. He shared slides and personal experiences from his trip to Haiti in the past. Grand Forks Cluster Report University Lutheran Church – Grand Forks, ND

April 25, 2015

On April 28, 2015, forty eight members were spellbound by the program presenters. First, Pres. Evelyn Clark set the mood for “Sharing Our Burdens”, with a story. A child watched his mother ‘put together’ a truck driver that struck a little boy on a bike. Her invitation to ‘come, have some coffee’ and with her soothing voice informed him the little boy suffered only a broken arm and bruises, so he would be o.k., the driver was able to control his emotions and could drive away. That welcome speech was followed by Pastor Tom Colenso, who began the communion worship sermon with “Humpty Dumpty, sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had great fall. All the kings horses and all the kings men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty together again. Shaking a box of puzzle pieces, he asked are we to let the pieces stay broken or can we help by putting them together. Finally he picked up a quilt explaining that the pieces are sewn together to make the quilt whole. Dark floral quilt pieces were distributed to attendees. We were asked to write a private secret sin on the back side. The pieces were collected and during the rest of the day a quilter put the pieces together in the shape of a cross and outlined with white quilting pieces. At the closing of the day’s program the quilt (not quite completed) was displayed showing our sins were covered by the cross. Penny Millspaugh, told about the infant bereavement program at Altru Hospital. They work with the parents from the time of knowing the stillborn baby died until discharge. They include educating the entire staff from janitor, maids. Dietary, therapists, nursing and medical staff that, in this mother’s room is a special needs room and the door is marked with a tear drop on a leaf. The EGF community college has a class that makes small boxes for these tiny premature babies. University Lutheran women cushion these boxes with satin padding to resemble a coffin so these babies can be buried. They also can arrange for cremation and have tiny urns for transient families so they can be buried in a permanent place. This is especially important for our military families. After a delicious lunch, Pastor Kristen Schmidt-Larson, used the parable of the friends, Luke 5:17-26, who brought the lame man and lowered him through the roof to Jesus. Jesus’ response was because of their faith, their friend was made whole. She used a printed study guide handout for the attendees to participate in the discussion and closed with the hymn ‘Blest Be the Tie that Binds‘. The final presenter, Stephanie Bono, Community Violence Intervention Center, presented state wide facts. A few of the facts presented were as follows; 4,816 new calls in 2014 were received, abused victims - 1 in 4 were women and 1 in 7 were men. Abuses were both physical and psychological. Total victims served were 1,336 adults, 1,600 children, and 330 homeless. CVIC provides safe places for victims and helps them get help, also provides safe supervised places for abusers to visit their children without the abused parent present.

gathering.

The theme of the morning was “What Does Homeless Mean”.

shelter can handle 65 to 112 people. They could accommodate 134 if they had one more bathroom.

Right now they are housing 36 children and 14 – 16 families. The mission statement is to offer shelter

and support in a spiritual setting using Love, Grace, Hospitality and Service.

Starr Braaten, Mayville Cluster Rep, went over the contents of the packets handed out to each church.

She also introduced the Eastern North Dakota SWO President, Karen Retzlaff and the Secretary,

Women of the ELCA Policy of Electioneering

There are a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit AND

there are a variety of services, but the same Lord AND there are a variety of activities, but the same God

who activates them in everyone.

Women of the ELCA affirms and believes all women should have equal opportunity

for involvement and leadership in the organization.

Women of the ELCA further believes that the Spirit that binds all through baptism is the guiding factor for each delegate

prayerfully to review and consider each nominee’s biographical information

prior to the synodical women’s convention.

Each participant further understands that promoting one candidate over another through campaigning

is in fact interfering with God’s plan and actions for participants of the Women of the

Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

I strive to be a Christian witness to my family and through service to my church and community. Two favorite hymns are “I Love to Tell the Story” and “On Our Way Rejoicing. A promise I cling to is Rev. 2:10, “Be faithful until death, and I will give you the Crown of Life”.
