Budapest Klezmer BandThe Budapest Klezmer Band was founded in 1990 in the heart of Central Europe where the Jewish folk music Klezmer was born long ago. The orchestra plays phenomenal arrangements, which are the handwriting of the orchestra leader and pianist Ferenc Jávori. Jávori is one of Europe’s finest klezmer music connoisseurs, who learned this fascinating style of music as he grew up in Munkács, which cur-rently belongs to the Ukraine, together with some old musicians of the Jewish community. Most of the band’s musicians are graduates from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music of Budapest, and are the most skilled Hungarian masters of their own instruments. The Budapest Klezmer Band has played at more than a hundred Europeanmusic festivals. Wherever the band plays, it attracts attention and the listeners’ astonished admiration with their skill and the exciting sounds of Klezmer music. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences awarded the band in 2000 the prestigious Zoltán Kodály Cultural Prize for its work in conservation and development of the Jewish musical tradition.

Tango pour Claude– Duo Syrius

Julien Gonzales is one of the most charismatic repre-sentatives of the French young generation accordion. He won the Primus Ikaalinen in 2007, and a couple of years earlier he had already formed the duo together with the phenomenal clarinettist Cyril Carbonne at the Dijon music conservatory. Aged only a little over 20 years, the young musicians have created a great career in France in just a few years, and have performed on the in-ternational arena as well. In addition to Europe, they have played in e.g. Tunisia, Canada and Madagascar. Last year Duo Syrius won the group competition at the Coupe Mondiale with their incomparable performance.

The band’s home country is readily recognizable from the duo’s var-ied repertoire: the French charm is present all the time, the accor-dion and clarinet sounds merge together as one, and their virtuoso skills amaze time and time again. Their repertoire includes Mozart, Satien and Bartok’s music, for example, but at this concert they will play music from Richard Galliano and Django Reinhardt.

• Oma Tupa, Wed 29.6. at 22:00

Petar Maric, SerbiaSata-Häme Soi has, for years al-ready, invited young world-class accordion soloists to perform in Finland, and offered at the same time an opportunity for them to become known to the Finnish audiences. Petar Maric, from Serbia, is a phenomenal talent

and an accordion virtuoso, who in recent years has come to interna-tional attention in many competitions and festivals throughout Eu-rope and also the U.S. and China. In 2010, Petar Maric won both the classic and the virtuoso trophy at the Coupe Mondiale International Accordion Championship held in Croatia. Petar has studied at the Music Academy of Belgrade under prof. Alexander Nikolic. Only 21 years old, Maric plays in Ikaalinen a classical repertoire with music from J.S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, Frank Angelis and S. Prokofiev.

The International Primus Ikaalinen Accordion Competition is already known around the world, in its seventh year, through live TV broad-casts. It is a uniquely composed accordion show / competition, where young world class performers will become known to Finnish television viewers, and through YLE Areena and satellite channels, to the international audience. The First Primus in 2005 was won by the Spanish Idoia Laburu from the Basque Country. In the following years the winners’ list has been made by Dmitri Saussard, France, Julien Gonzales, France, Mario D’Amario, Italy, Grayson Masefield, New Zealand, and last summer, Pietro Adragna, Italy. Finnish musicians have also been quite successful, the most success-ful being Sami Hopponen, who came second with his memorable “duel” with the French Julien Gonzales in the summer of 2007. The Primus Ikaalinen contest has eight musicians from eight countries. The competitors are selected during the previous winter, from a number of other competitions and festivals, as well as an open enrolment basis. The players will bring to the Primus from their own country a dash of colour from their own national music, which makes the event even more interesting. Primus Ikaalinen is definitely one of the Sata-Häme Soi Festival highlights, with its warm and happy international atmosphere. At the Primus one can feel how the music connects all people and language barriers are non-existent.

Dallapé Orchestra

The renewed Dallapé, first founded 86 years ago, has returned to the dance halls and continues the tradition in the 1930´s style. The new director of Dallapé, Juha Hostikka, follows in the footsteps of Martin Jäppilä, Georg Malmsten and Bruno Laakko. Dallapé plays good old Finnish jazz, gorgeous old evergreens, which have new strength when played by a 12 musician group. The present day Dal-lape has the best musicians – just like in the golden years before the wars. The orchestra has received access to the old original Dallapé arrangements and the new material has also been made with re-spect to the legacy and the unique sound of the band. Sincere good mood grabs the listener forcibly.

Dallapé is an unparalleled phenomenon in the Finnish music scene. The name stems from an Italian accordion make, and has been etched in the Finnish mindscape, and it has almost become national property. The soloists for the new Dallapé are Sami Saari and Juha Hostikka.

Terem QuartetOne of Russia’s most famous bands is the Terem Quartet which celebrates its 25th anniversary, and makes a visit to Ikaalinen to mark the anniversary. The Domra accordion and the base balalaika are traditional Russian folk music instruments and Terem has been a pioneer in a new way to play these interpreters of Slavic moods. Breathtaking virtuosity, astounding arrangements and a phenom-enal ensemble have made this quartetone of the most sought after bands around the world. The Terem Quartet has performed in over 60 countries and played in almost 3000 concerts. The Quartet’s repertoire includes more than 500 breathtaking arrangements of their own, of classical pieces from different countries and well-known composers.

The Terem Quartet’s Ikaalinen concert has a guest soloist, ac-cordion player and singer Jonna Pirttijoki. This concert is one of the main events of the 2011 festival.

Terem Quartet players are: Andrei Konstantinov (soprano domra)Alexei Barshchev (alto domra), Andrei Smirnov (accordion)and Mikhail Dzyudze (base balalaika).

Lions of AfricaThe most exotic performer group will be the African dancers, per-cussionists and musicians of the “Lions of Africa” from Senegal. This amazing spectacle is based on an ancient African tradition in which dance, music and acrobat-ics have been used for controlling and taming even the forces of nature. The group’s show is full of momentum and energy, virtuosity and wild pageantry of colour, the kind of which the Ikaalinen Old Town Park has never seen before. African dance and the magic of exotic percussions open a whole new world to the Finnish audience used to more melancholy music.

The members of the Lions of the Africa are West African cultural ambassadors from Senegal. The Government of Senegal is support-ing the group’s visit to Ikaalinen.

• Central Park Stage, Fri at 20:30

Fabio Rossato & Ivan TibollaThe Italian duo, Fabio Rossato & Ivan Tibolla serves listeners tasty jazz moods at the Oma Tupa on Friday evening. When younger, Fabio Rossato won international accordion Competitions across Southern Europe, studied after his school years at the Pesaro Conservatory majoring in piano and composition, and graduated as a professional musician. Ros-sato is a talented and respected jazz accordionist, who works as a musician and a teacher at the Conservatory of Trento.

Ivan Tibolla studied classical organ and also jazz improvisation under the pianist Bruno Cesselli. Tibolla has played with dozens of prominent Italian musicians and has appeared in almost all the major jazz festivals in Italy.

The Duo was awarded the Italian record companies’ Orpheus Music Prize for their record released in 2009. At the concert in Ikaalinen, it will be easy to understand why the duo was awarded the prestig-ious distinctions.
