Nothing but Live your Faith Dear brothers and sisters, Many years ago a small Jewish boy asked his father, "Why must we surrender our Jewish faith and start to attend Lutheran services here in Germany'? The father replied, "Son, we must abandon our faith so that people will accept us and support our business adventures!"

The young lad never got over his disappointment and bitterness. His faith in his father and in his religion were crushed. When the lad left Germany he went to England to study at the British Museum, where he formed his philosophies for life; he wrote a book that changed the world called, "The Communist Manifesto.” The name of that little boy was Karl Marx. He influenced billions into a stream that for 70 years ruined, imprisoned and confused many lives. Today, that system of thinking is crumbling, but only after people got a good look at its tragic consequences. The influence of this father's hypocrisy multiplied in infamy. Without godly faith, all of us are subject to distortions in our perspectives. Abraham lived his faith and showed it to his son Isaac that “God will provide our needs.” He went all they way even to sacrifice his only son. Jesus showed on Mount Tabor while conversing with Moses, the law-giver and Elijah, the great prophet, that the faith in Him fulfills every need of men. We see the principle of faith perfectly portrayed in Jesus. He is the supreme example of faith. Hebrews 12:2 tells us that we are to “fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith,” which pleases God. All we need is ‘nothing but teaching the faith to our children while living it’; never try to abandon and look for acceptance and support from other friends which would destroy your family and our society. It happened to Karl Marx. It should not happen to you. Protect your family! Wishing you a fruitful Lenten season! Msgr. Xavier

Fasting & Abstinence • Fasting is defined as having one full meal a day, and

is required only on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This requirement is for ages 18 to 59, but younger and older may participate.

• During Lent abstinence from meat on Friday’s is obligatory in the United States, as elsewhere, for all Catholics age 14 until death.

Getting caught up in the rubrical requirements, however, misses the point. Fasting is meaningless unless our hearts fast from obstacles blocking our way to true discipleship.

This Lent, with our fast and abstinence, we include “Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil, do no evil and post no evil.”

Stations of the Cross on Fridays at 6:30 pm

followed by The Holy Mass The following groups will lead the Stations: Mar. 02: Society of St. Vincent de Paul Mar. 09: Lectors Mar. 16: EM of Holy Communion Mar. 23: Faith Formation Please try to have a minimum of 7 participants and a maximum of 14. Please arrive 15 minutes early to prepare.

During Lent, we do not have the 12:05 pm Mass on Fridays. Masses on Fridays will be at 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.

ENCOUNTER Cesia We encounter Cesia in Nicaragua, where, despite a lack of economic opportunity, young people pursue their dreams by building businesses to better their lives. How can you work to improve the lives of others this Lent? How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Bishop’s Annual Appeal: “Make all things new.’” This weekend is the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Commitment Weekend throughout the diocese. Last year, Bishop Strickland announced his vision to make the Diocese of Tyler a teaching diocese in the Constitution on Teaching the Catholic Faith. This vision involves teaching the Faith anew to every member of our diocese: priests, seminarians, deacons, lay

people, and even fallen away Catholics and non-Catholics. The Bishop’s Appeal provides for the many ministries that make this vision a reality. Prayerfully consider supporting the 2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal with a pledge. Pledge cards can be found in your pews, and online gifts can be made at www.dioceseoftyler.org/appeal. Thank you for your continued generosity.
