Client NarrativesLend A Hand has been serving the Boulder City population for 28 years. Who is it we serve? Here are a few stories about the clients of Lend A Hand.

What Joe had to say . . . Joe lives alone, doesn’t drive because of impaired vision. I asked Joe how he came to use our services and think it is a story worth telling. Five years ago Joe attended a town meeting and was given a ride home by another attendee. The next day the director of Lend A Hand called Joe and said, “I think you could use our services”. Apparently, the ride home from the meeting was a Lend A Hand board member! Joe states that the help he receives from Lend A Hand allows him to maintain himself in his own home. Joe has contributed to Lend A Hand by being involved in our strategic planning process and has even orchestrated a seminar at Lend A Hand for the visually impaired.

From A Couple . . . A Boulder City couple has been receiving services from Lend A Hand for 5 plus years after the husband was the victim of a stroke. Their words about our organization are so heartfelt. Mrs. stated, “Lend A Hand has been our friend for a long time. It is a place I can call, they talk to me and give me encouragement”.

Donya’s story . . . Donya is a recent resident of Boulder City and was referred to us by Boulder City Emergency Aid. How great is that, Boulder City non- profits working together to get services to those in need. Donya says I am so blessed to be a client. She states, “Lend A Hand has taken me through several recent surgeries and medical conditions that I don’t know how I would have made it without their help. Every driver and the office staff are wonderful to me and I am so grateful.”

Some of our clients have enjoyed illustrious careers. Kae was a band leader who traveled the world and even played with the Beatles in 1963! His band was popular on the strip for many years but he raised his family in Boulder City. Now with several health impairments, Kae uses the services of Lend A Hand several times a week and is appreciative that Lend A Hand can get him to where he needs to go. Like so many people in Boulder City, he knew the name but didn’t know what services were offered.

Accomplishments Everything in life is better understood retrospectively and so it is with Lend A Hand. 2016-2017 has proven that Lend A Hand is a dynamic and growing organization adapting to the increasing needs of our target population. Let’s take a look at some facts. Our targeted population is Boulder City residents age 60 and over or the disabled of any age with the largest majority being seniors over 60. According to the 2015 report by the Nevada’s Commission on Aging Legislative Subcommittee Nevada’s aging population is one of the fastest growing in the nation. Today, 13% of the state’s population is over 65. The number for Boulder City is 27% over 65 or double the national statistic for the same age group. Our services provide increased access to medical care, respite care and basic transportation to shopping and personal needs. These sometimes-simple tasks not only provide improved quality of life but in many cases, allow the client to remain in their own homes. Another measure of our services is unit pricing. Lend A Hand serves an average of 347 clients annually with a cost per client (unit) of $166.67. Many clients are able to stay in their homes because we provide unduplicated services at no cost. If the client were to be admitted to a nursing home the cost would be between $72,000 to $85,000 annually paid for by families, insurance, Medicaid or other government programs.

The Future 2018 and Beyond It is the goal of Lend A Hand to continue to build a strong organization that will provide for the aging population of Boulder City for many years to come. The organization is ever mindful of the growing needs of both our current and future clients. That said: we will continue to recruit volunteers, partner with local agencies, raise money, and pursue grant opportunities. In 2017 we launched a 5-year strategic plan as a guide to meeting the above-mentioned needs. With the ongoing help of the community and grant options we will continue to provide our unduplicated services to our clients. Lend A Hand is grateful for the commitment of our volunteers, agencies and partner organizations in Boulder City, whose contributions are vital to the success of our organization. In June, the Board and staff of Lend A Hand participated in a strategic planning seminar with Scott Emerson from the Red Cross. Not only was this a “first” for Lend A Hand, it was agreed by all attendees to have been a valuable experience to move the organization forward. There is now a five-year plan in place and the process of addressing each strategic point is being tackled by specific task forces and will proceed to implementation. The strategic plan also indicated the need for a marketing person who would be the one to brand the organization, connect with the community and strengthen our volunteer numbers. This position is still in the planning stages but recognized as very important to our continued growth. Who are the staff of Lend A Hand? In February of 2017, Shannon Eckmann was hired as the Executive Director of Lend A Hand. The title of Executive Director was changed as part of our strategic planning to better describe this position. Shannon comes to us with a strong managerial background and has proven her expertise of managing under challenging conditions. Also, Maria Rondeau joined us as an administrative assistant. Nancy Lyytikainen continues in her role as Volunteer Coordinator. Currently, there is an open position for Transportation Coordinator. Those duties are being shared by the office staff. A new position, book keeper, has been added on the advice of our auditor and treasurer. This position works in our treasurer ’s office for approximately 10 hours per week. Also, we now contract with an organization called Professionals in Philanthropy, a grant writing company. Stacy Wedding and Lisa Sich have already proven to be an asset in not just grant writing but in many other aspects of running a non-profit organization. Lend A Hand already is a respected organization in the Boulder City community. The goal for this coming year is to “Brand” our name in the community, to make the organization known to all citizen, not just those who require our services. We plan to strengthen our relationships with community organizations, build our board of trustees and reach out to potential clients and volunteers. Finally, thanks to all those who have gone before me in this position. This unique group of dedicated people have been good stewards of this organization since 1988. And we thank our donors’ whose ongoing support of time and money allows us to grow and succeed. Georgia Wenzel, President, Board of Trustees
