2018 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Commonly Asked Questions

What is the BAA?

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal (BAA) is a primary source of funding to help sustain and expand ministries in the 96 parishes, 21 missions, 34 Catholic Schools, and agencies throughout

the diocese. Each parish and mission is asked to participate in this worthy appeal.

Why do we need these ministries and programs?

The Catholic Church serves the needs of many people in our local diocese and beyond. While some of these services are offered at the parish level, it is often more effective when many join together in ministry and service of the people of the diocese. Each diocesan ministry exists to support the work of our local parishes

How is each parish goal determined?

It is an objective formula based on a parish’s annual offertory: Each parish is assigned a percentage of the overall $4,000,000 goal as their BAA parish target. This percentage is the same percentage that their parish assessment represents compared to the overall diocesan assessment. For example, if a parish’s annual diocesan assessment represents 1% of the overall diocesan assessment amount, then their BAA target will represent 1% of the $4,000,000 overall goal.

What should I give?

A Gift of Prayer – Pray for the church, for our diocesan family, and for all people who support or are supported by the BAA. Time and Talent – Volunteer in your parish, school, community, and in diocesan ministries. A Sacrificial Gift – Consider making a pledge or onetime financial gift. Please continue working toward your Stewardship Commitment of 10%; designating 5% to your parish, 1% to the diocese, and 4% of annual income to other charities.

What type of gifts will the Diocese accept?

Cash, check, securities, credit card donations, and direct debit withdrawals. Donations can be made on-line by going to www.sccatholic.org. Registered households will be mailed their appeal packet outlining the funding for the 2018 BAA.

Can these funds be used for anything other than their stated purpose?

No, donations to the Bishop’s Annual Appeal are restricted. The diocese has designated these funds to be used only for the purposes in which the donations were intended. The diocese has an obligation to honor the wishes of the donors and use these funds for the purpose they were collected. For example, lawsuit settlements are paid from insurance, income from diocesan investments, and sale of property if necessary.

Welcome Rodney Ward, Director of Music Ministries!

R odney Ward, a recent graduate of Appalachian State University, has just completed a dual degree in both sacred music and organ performance. A native of Conway,

South Carolina, Rodney served as Organist for the Saturday Mass at St. James, his home parish, from age fourteen until he left for his studies at ASU.

At the age of fifteen, Rodney won First Prize in the Grand Strand Yamaha Piano Competition. Throughout junior high and high school, he accompanied numerous choirs and vocalists for local and regional performances. In the summer of 2006, Rodney visited the Washington, DC area where he performed on organs at St. Paul’s Episcopal – K Street, the Catholic Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul, and at the National Cathedral. In March 2007, he was a featured soloist on organ at the American Church in Paris, France while touring there with a chamber choir from Myrtle Beach, SC. In April of 2009, Rodney was chosen to present a recital on the famous Tannenberg organ in Old Salem, NC, and again in July of 2017. He has maintained an active recital career performing for such organizations as the Organ Historical Society and American Guild of Organists.

During his undergraduate and graduate years at Appalachian State, Rodney served as Organist for First Baptist Church of Lenoir, North Carolina. Most recently, he participated in an apprenticeship with C.W. Gibson, Inc. Pipe Organ Specialties in Monroeville, New Jersey while also serving as assistant organist at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Catholic Church in Atlantic City. Please take a moment to introduce yourself and welcome Rodney to the St. John the Beloved family!

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper February 13, 2018

6:00pm Shrove Tuesday is also known as Pancake Day. What is Shrove Tuesday? And why eat pancakes on this day? The word “shrove” comes from a word that means “to have your sins forgiven.” In

older times, people would celebrate the sacrament of reconciliation on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday), and also ask forgiveness from one another. Then for their penance, they would keep the Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In these older times, fasting laws were much stricter than they are now. No oil, fat, meat, dairy products, etc., were eaten at all during Lent. So what did you do with the eggs, oil, milk, etc., that you had at home? You made pancakes to eat before Lent began!

Even the ingredients in pancakes have a spiritual significance:

Eggs symbolize creation. Flour is the staff of life. Salt represents wholesomeness. Milk symbolizes purity.

Through the centuries, Christians all around the globe have celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday as Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day! This day is also called Mardi Gras, French for Fat Tuesday, because it is the last chance to eat up all the forbidden foods of Lent!

Join us for our Pancake Supper on February 13th at 6:00pm in Madden Hall!

All are Welcome!

Scripture Reflection The fact that today’s Gospel from Mark makes reference to Jesus curing Peter’s mother-in-law would seem to point to the fact that Peter was married. However, the majority of scholars are of the opinion that the wife may have died before Peter was called by Jesus as an Apostle. In fact, there are many misconceptions about St. Peter. For one, although often portrayed as much older, he was probably younger than Jesus. In fact all 12 Apostles were most likely younger than Jesus.

Also, Peter is often presented in paintings and movies and books as being a very old man, but historians have also concluded that Peter was martyred in Rome when he was about 66 years old. He was never the old, old man in his 80’s we see quite often.

All of that is secondary to a simple statement in today’s Gospel about the mother-in-law. Specifically, St. Mark writes, “He (Jesus) approached, grasped her hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her and she waited on them.” St. Matthew reveals this same fact in his Gospel (Matthew 8:15), and he writes, “He (Jesus) touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to serve him.”

The message for us is very basic. Peter’s mother-in-law responded to Jesus the same way we should when Jesus blesses us. She responded to the Lord and immediately served Him out of gratitude. That should be our motivation, and action, as well.
