The teachers are taking groups associated with the many cultures that make up our school, and are giving up their lunchtimes to ensure that the groups will be ready for the performance. William Uele is producing the Festival and is busy ensuring that each group has the necessary costumes. This is just one of the many activities teachers chose to do in their own time. It was a great success with many parents and Year 6 students attending. Our students and staff did a presentation on how the school functions and the opportunities that are available to them. A big thank you to Quinn Rm 12, Lily Rm 8, Isabel Rm 10, Hawaiki Rm 6, Lena Rm 4, Danii Rm 11, Scarlet Rm 10 and Brooke Rm 10 who did an amazing job . Well done also to the students who worked on the individual tables showing parents how the learning and specialist programmes function. They made us very proud, sharing not only information but their own experiences of their time at Pasadena.

PASADENA ECO-WARRIORS collaboration with the ecostore We’re teaming up with Ecostore’s Plastic Return Programme to help address the plastic problem. The waste system in New Zealand is overwhelmed and so much of our recycling is being sent overseas, ending up in landfill or even in the oceans. Let’s keep it in New Zealand and reuse it! Our school is being part of the solution by teaming up with ecostore. How you can help: bring in your empty ecostore bottles, pop them in the ecostore bottle drop bin at Pasadena Intermediate School and ecostore will collect, wash and remake them into new bottles. Collect enough bottles and our school could receive money to spend on sustainability initiatives. Our eco-warrior group have been learning about recycling and how to be leaders in the school. They have decided to place collection bags around the community to try and get the word out and help reduce plastic waste.

PASADENA ECO-WARRIORS learn something new We also had a very informative visit from Victoria Potter a parent and the Director of The Sustainable Cleaning Co. She told us about her company’s fantastic products that reduce plastic and chemicals.

Lateness We would like to emphasise the importance of being at school on time. School starts at 8.45 a.m. Monday to Thursday and 9am on Fridays. Children need to be in their class before the bell so that they can listen to the notices to know what events and meetings are occuring, such as Gifted & Talented and sporting and cultural groups. Children who arrive late are greatly disadvantaged because they miss starting the day with their peers and the beginning of lessons. It is essential that you ensure that your child arrives at school on time to prevent disruption to your child’s own learning and that of others. Punctuality is a life skill that we encourage students to develop. We understand that there may be rare occasions when you are unavoidably late due to unforeseen circumstances. On these occasions please make sure that you contact the school office to inform us when you will arrive.

Cultural Festival During recreation every day, our school is filled with the joyful sound of Pasadena students practising for our Cultural Festival. Whether it's the sound of the Pasifika drumming as our Tongan group practice their Lakalaka or the soothing symphonies that play as our contemporary group dance in synchronisation. Our students are both excited and nervous as they prepare for Cultural Week. Cultural Week 2019 will consist of two main events, our Cultural Festival Production " The world through our eyes, a journey of self-discovery" and our class country exhibition, "Around the world with Pasadena". We invite you as their parents and caregivers to come along and celebrate with us during this event. The Cultural Festival will take place on Thursday 26 September. Tickets will be on sale a few weeks before the event.

Our Yr 8s came in the middle of Yr 8 event; our Yr7s ran and answered questions frantically, with one of the teams managing a top 15 place. A fun evening was had by all students and thank you to the many parents who turned up to support.

Epro8 4 teams from Pasadena competed in the last round of the Epro8 competition last Monday at St Kents School. All the students worked well together and completed many challenges on the evening, while having fun. We are hosting the next round of the competition here at Pasadena on 17th, 18th and 19th of September where over 75 students will take part in this engineering and problem solving competition. If your child is taking part can you please return the permission slips and pay the $30 entrance fee as soon as possible. All parents are invited to attend the events that will take place during the school day and in the evenings on the above dates.

Quiz Night Pasadena Intermediate and the C@P committee recently held its annual quiz night fundraiser and from the feedback received it was a huge success. 18 teams participated and had a great night of trivia. All attendees helped raise money towards digital and sporting equipment for the school. The exact amount raised is still to be confirmed but will be released very soon. Thanks to members of the C@P committee for their hard work setting up the venue, acquiring prizes for the various auctions and for helping run the events of the night. Many weeks of organisation prior to the event from the C@P committee, ensured a safe and entertaining night for all teams. See you again next year.

Taekwondo Over last couple of weeks the students have been taking part in half an hour Taekwondo lessons once a week. Each

lesson consists of fitness at the beginning, this is usually done in the format of a relay and involves push ups, sit ups and squats. After that they get into line formation and learn how to clearly and safely use different types of kicks and punches. The kids are learning a lot and are enjoying the short mini lessons.

Student-Led Conferences/Report feedback Thank you to everyone who filled in the survey in regards to reporting and student-led conferences at Pasadena. Overall, 97% of parents surveyed stated that the information shared at student-led conferences was relevant and effective. Other key areas that parents identified as being enjoyable were:

· Students understand what they are learning and what their next steps are · Being able to meet with the teacher one on one, and having input from them · Seeing samples of work

In regards to the written report, 94% of parents surveyed identified that the report gave them a good understanding of how their child was achieving. Key areas identified as being strengths were:

· Knowing exactly how the student was doing across curriculum areas · The report being clear, concise and easy to read · Student ismart goals allowed for student ownership over learning · The reports felt personal and genuine

An area that was identified as needing to be changed was removing the ‘how you can help at home’ comment box as parents felt that ideas were covered during student-led conferences and they already knew how to support their child. Teachers are always available to meet with whanau at anytime to discuss student progress and wellbeing at any point during the year. If you would like to organise a time to do this, please email your child’s classroom teacher when needed.

Boys Basketball On the 7th of August, 10 boys travelled to the North Shore Event Centre to compete against our local schools in the Central Zone Basketball Tournament. The talent we have at Pasadena is amazing, and it showed on the day. Unfortunately, our first game came down to a close loss. We went on to win four out of six games and placed 5th out of the entire competition. The boys enjoyed every minute of it and played their hearts out. I was super impressed by them, and the way they carried themselves on the day. A huge thanks to all the parents who helped with transport as well as the support they provided. It was awesome having an audience cheer for us. Waterpolo The year 7 & 8 water polo season has come to a successful end. We had three teams at Pasadena this year and each of them had a great season. Pasadena A finished first in Division 1 with Zach Rm 1 winning Most Promising Goalie, Conal winning Most Promising Boy and Madi Rm 8 and Kenzie Rm 4 sharing Most Promising girl. Pasadena B finished fourth in Division 1 and Pasadena C won third in Division 2. Tournament season has now started and we participated in our first tournament a few weekends ago. Pasadena entered two teams into the Winterfest tournament, where both teams had a great weekend! Pasadena B played in the C grade and placed 5th. Pasadena A played in the C grade and placed 1st with Zach Rm 1 taking home MVP for goal keeper and Conal Rm 12 taking home MVP. We will be taking one team to The Tim Sonderer Memorial tournament this coming weekend, and in a few weeks the Pasadena A team will be heading off to AIMS games in Tauranga. This week the team that will be heading to AIMS games is holding another pizza fundraiser, which will help to cover the cost of our accomodation in Tauranga. We will be selling pizza on Thursday morning, which will be delivered during lunch eating. Hawaiian, cheese or pepperoni pizza will be available for $3 for 2 slices or $5 for 4 slices. It would be great if you could support our team!
