GAbout LERIG 2011…..

Marking the beginning of the“Leather Week” celebrations at Chennai,India, the stakeholders of the Indian leather sector organize theLeather Research Industry Get-together (LERIG) with the CentralLeather Research Institute (CLRI) taking the lead. Since 965, LERIGhas provided a platform for formal and informal discussions amongstthe researchers, academicians and industrial leaders, thus pavingway for concerted actions towards overall development of the sector.Inrecentyears, thematicdiscussionsincludedBiologicaloptionsforleatherprocessing,Challengesandopportunitiesforleathersector,DevelopmentInitiatives, Augmentation Measures, Opportunities and New Directionsetc.LERIGisawellattendedeventwithindustrialleaders,technicalandR&Dpersonnel,researchersandyoungresearchersparticipating.

Topics to be addressed

• Green chemistry initiatives in leatherchemicals.

• Chemicals for making eco benign (green)andnaturalleathers.

• Methodsforenhancinguptakeofchemicalsandmanagementofwastes.

In essence this session would address the need and methodology to be adopted to get a labeling system for Indian leather, which is synonymous to environmental benign character of the leather and the sector

Green MarkSaturday,9January0,9:5AMto:5AM,

TripleHelixAuditorium,CLRIBackgroundThe color green is a sign of prosperity. Green Mark is the figure of“agreenleaftowrapupacleanandunpollutedearth”.GreenMarkmeansthe product has been verified through certain certification to show thatit is qualified of recyclable, low pollution, and resource saving therebycontributingtotheenvironmentalprotection.GreenMarkopensanarrayof opportunities to encourage and step forward on the exciting path ofsuccess.Itisintendedtopromotesustainabilityintheprocessenvironmentandraiseenvironmentalawarenessamongthestakeholders.

Toreachsuchanobjectiveinleatherindustryoneneedtotargetontheuseofgreenerand/ornaturalleatherchemicalsforthegreenmarkinleathers.Single approach of using natural chemicals alone may not be adequateto obtain desired properties in leathers and hence there is also need forthedevelopmentofhighexhaustionmethodologytoattainzero leatherchemicalandpossiblyzeroliquiddischarge.

• Specialpropertiesfrominferiormaterial

• Roleofmaterialandtechnologyprowess

In essence this session would provide an insight into how value addition can be made in a manner that is preferred in the market place. Session would also address the raw material and skill requirements

MarketSunday,0January0,9:5AMto:5AM,

TripleHelixAuditorium,CLRIBackgroundCompliance calls for making leather chemicals andleathers in accordance with established guidelines, specifications, orlegislation.REACHnormsareevolvingand sceptism in the minds of the tanner needs tobe resolved by the chemical manufacturer and theresearchers.Testingnormsrelatingtofinishes, presenceof hazardous metal ions etc need to be explained in amanner in which the technical workforce can easilyidentifythepotentialsourcesforsuchbannedchemicalsand avoid them in leather processing.
