27th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Year B)
(Mark 10:9)
27th Sunday of the Year
Marriages are made in heaven The readings this Sunday speak to us about the creation of man and woman and their union with one another in marriage. Are we becoming more like Adam before the creation of Eve and “alone” because we have the smartphones constantly in our hand? How much has the smartphone interfered with the relationship we have with our spouse? Or, to the extreme, has the smartphone superseded the importance of being with our spouse?
Perhaps if couples spent more time conversing with each other and listening to what their spouse was concerned about or was feeling, the rate of divorce would not continue to climb. Don’t let your spouse live alone, right next to you in the same home, and don’t let God live alone either. Talk to them. They are there ready to listen. For Jesus, marriage is clearly a gift from God.
Story of “I” Once a lover came to his girlfriend’s house and knocked at the door. She asked from inside, “Who is that?” He said, “Honey, it is I.” She said, “There is no place here for you and me.” He again said, “Dear, it is I, open the door.” But, she said the same, “There is no place here for you and me; please go away.” Though he insisted, she repeated the same words and did not open the door. The man went away sad and depressed. He lost all his happiness and felt lonely. Her words always haunted him: “There is no place here for you and me.” Slowly, he began to think about these words and went into deep reflection. Then, he understood what she really meant.
He became enthusiastic and returned to her house and knocked at the door. She asked from within, “Who are you?” He said, “It's you.” The door was opened, and they became one. What she was telling was that there was no place here for “you” and “me”, i.e., “if you feel that you are separate from me, go away.”
Success of married life is in unity, experience of togetherness. There should not be “you and me” between husband and wife. Marriage is the partnership of whole of life. Marriage becomes a failure when husbands and wives think and talk and act like “you and me.” When husband and wife stop saying “this is my house,” “this is my car,” this is my money,” etc., marriage life becomes successful and meaningful.
Plenary Council Assembly This Sunday October 2021, the Catholic Church in Australia will gather for the first Assembly of the Plenary Council to be held since the second Vatican Council. In 2018, when the decision to hold a Plenary Council was announced, the entire People of God in Australia began preparing for this historic moment by listening to God and by listening to one another’s stories of faith. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the first Assembly will be a mix of in-person and online delivery. We are all called to continue our own journey of prayer and discernment as we look forward in hope to the renewal of the Catholic Church in Australia. Have a beautiful week end,
Fr. Johny Arattukulam, O.C.D.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 127 R. May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives. O blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways! by the labour of your hands you shall eat. You will be happy and prosper. R. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in the heart of your house; your children like shoots of the olive, around your table. R. Indeed thus shall be blessed the man who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion in a happy Jerusalem all the days of your life! May you see your children's children. On Israel, peace! R.
First Reading
A reading from the book of Genesis 2:18–24 The Lord God said, 'It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmate.' So from the soil the Lord God fashioned all the wild beasts and all the birds of heaven. These he brought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it. The man gave names to all the cattle, all the birds of heaven and all the wild beasts. But no helpmate suitable for man was found for him. So the Lord God made the man fall into a deep sleep. And while he slept, he took one of his ribs and enclosed it in flesh. The Lord God built the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. The man exclaimed: 'This at last is bone from my bones and flesh from my flesh! This is to be called woman, for this was taken from man.' This is why a man leaves his father and mother and joins himself to his wife, and they become one body. The word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
SECOND READING
A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 2:9–11 We see in Jesus one who was for a short while made lower than the angels and is now crowned with glory and splendour because he submitted to death; by God's grace he had to experience death for all mankind. As it was his purpose to bring a great many of his sons into glory, it was appropriate that God, for whom everything exists and through whom everything exists, should make perfect, through suffering, the leader who would take them to their salvation. For the one who sanctifies, and the ones who are sanctified, are of the same stock; that is why he openly calls them brothers. The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God.
Gospel acclamation
Alleluia, alleluia! If we love one another, God will live in us in perfect love. Alleluia!
GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 10:2–16 Some Pharisees approached Jesus and asked, 'Is it against the law for a man to divorce his wife?' They were testing him. He answered them, 'What did Moses command you?' 'Moses allowed us' they said 'to draw up a writ of dismissal and so to divorce.' Then Jesus said to them, 'It was because you were so unteachable that he wrote this commandment for you. But from the beginning of creation God made them male and female. This is why a man must leave father and mother, and the two become one body.
They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has united, man must not divide.' Back in the house the disciples questioned him again about this, and he said to them. 'The man who divorces his wife and marries another is guilty of adultery against her. And if a woman divorces her husband and marries another she is guilty of adultery too.'
People were bringing little children to him, for him to touch them. The disciples turned them away, but when Jesus saw this he was indignant and said to them, 'Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you solemnly, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.' Then he put his arms round them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing.
The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
"Can you help us?" Singers and Musicians required "
On every First Friday of the Month, our evening mass at 5:00pm, is celebrated in Latin, one of the very few parishes who do so. We currently need someone who can read the mass in Latin. It will be a bonus if you are a musician too, but you do not have to be both. Please leave your name at the Parish Office if you are interested and I will get in contact with you with more details. It is only once a month and your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for sharing your talent with us. Deo Gratias!

Congratulations to the students of Assumption Catholic Primary School who received their First Holy Communion on 19th September. The children were all excited to receive communion for the first time. It was nice to see the girls in their beautiful white dresses and the boys in their stunning suits. Congratulations to each and every one of them. We are grateful for the hardworking teachers and parish community who supported these students and made this day possible.
Preparing to hear God’s word Jesus always welcomed children and blessed them. You can talk to Jesus whenever you like and know that he will be delighted to spend time with you.
The Gospel story When people brought their children to Jesus so he could bless them, the disciples tried to give Jesus some peace and quiet and told the people to stop bothering him. But Jesus wanted the children to come to him. He told the people that those who were like little children belong to the kingdom of God. Jesus blessed the children. Imagine what it would have been like to be blessed by Jesus!
Reflection
Why do you think children were so important to Jesus? What is it about children that is similar to the kingdom? Children are innocent, trusting and accepting. Jesus wanted all people to be like children in these ways, and to trust in him with a natural sense of awe and wonder. What do you think the kingdom of heaven is like?

Our Lady of the Rosary The Catholic Church celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary on 7th October. It was known for several centuries by the alternate title of “Our Lady of Victory.” The feast of Our Lady of the Rosary was instituted to honour Mary for the Christian victory over the Turks at Lepanto on 7th October, 1571. Pope St. Pius V attributed the victory to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who was invoked on the day of the battle through a campaign to pray the Rosary throughout Europe. Three Catholic powers on the continent – Genoa, Spain, and the Papal States - formed an alliance called the Holy League, to defend their Christian civilization against Turkish invasion. Its fleets sailed to confront the Turks near the west coast of Greece on October 7, 1571.Crew members on more than 200 ships prayed the Rosary in preparation for the battle - as did Christians throughout Europe, encouraged by the Pope to gather in their churches to invoke the Virgin Mary against the daunting Turkish forces. Some accounts say that Pope Pius V was granted a miraculous vision of the Holy League's stunning victory. Without a doubt, the Pope understood the significance of the day's events, when he was eventually informed that all but 13 of the nearly 300 Turkish ships had been captured or sunk. He was moved to institute the feast now celebrated universally as Our Lady of the Rosary.
St. Francis of Assisi- 4th October Saint Francis was born on an uncertain date in the early 1180s, one of the several children born to the wealthy merchant Pietro Bernardone and his wife Pica. He originally received the name Giovanni (or John), but became known as Francesco (or Francis) by his father's choice. Unlike many medieval saints, St. Francis was neither studious nor pious in his youth. His father's wealth gave him access to a lively social life among the upper classes, where he was known for his flashy clothes and his readiness to burst into song. Later a patron of peacemakers, he aspired to great military feats in his youth and fought in a war with a rival Italian city-state. A period of imprisonment during that conflict turned his mind toward more serious thoughts, as did a
recurring dream that suggested his true “army” was not of this world. He returned to Assisi due to illness in 1205, and there began considering a life of voluntary poverty. Three major incidents confirmed Francis in this path. In Assisi, he overcame his fear of disease to kiss the hand of a leper. Afterward, he made a pilgrimage to Rome, where he deposited his money at Saint Peter's tomb and exchanged clothes with a beggar. Soon after he returned home, Francis heard Christ tell him in a vision: “Go, Francis, and repair my house, which as you see is falling into ruin.” Francis began to use his father's wealth to restore churches. This led to a public quarrel in which the cloth-merchant's son removed his clothing and declared that he had no father except God. He regarded himself as the husband of “Lady Poverty,” and resolved to serve Christ as “a herald of the Great King.” During the year 1208, the “herald” received the inspiration that would give rise to the Franciscan movement. At Mass one morning, he heard the Gospel reading in which Christ instructed the apostles to go forth without money, shoes, or extra clothing. This way of life soon became a papally-approved rule, which would attract huge number of followers within Francis' own lifetime. Through his imitation of Christ, Francis also shared in the Lord's sufferings. He miraculously received Christ's wounds, the stigmata, in his own flesh during September of 1224. His health collapsed over the next two years, a “living sacrifice” made during two decades of missionary preaching and penance. St. Francis of Assisi died on Oct. 3, 1226. Pope Gregory IX, his friend and devotee, canonized him in 1228.

1. The church was badly in need of a coat of paint. So the pastor decided he'd do the job himself. But all he had was one bucket of paint. So, he got a bunch of buckets and some water, and he thinned the paint enough to cover the entire church. Then he spent all day painting. That night it rained—very hard—and washed all the paint off. The pastor was quite discouraged and asked God, 'Why...why God, did you let it rain and wash off all my hard work?' To which God thundered his reply, 'Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!'
2. Teacher: If you had just one day to live, where would you go? Student: I would spend my last day in school, in this classroom. Teacher: Oh! How touching! Such an eager student! Student: Because time in this class goes so slowly, one day feels like a year!
3. Thanks for explaining the word “many” to me, it means a lot. 4. Yesterday I accidentally swallowed some food colouring. The doctor says I’m OK, but I feel like I’ve dyed a little inside. 5.eBay is so useless. I tried to look up lighters and it gave me 13,749 matches. 6. My cross-eyed wife and I just got a divorce. I found out she was seeing someone on the side. 7. My ex used to hit me with stringed instruments. She had a history of violins.
